I don’t think Oliver is the slam dunk that a lot of people think. Wilkins has much less upside but is a safer pick. Will probably be a top 15 DT for the next decade. Oliver has the upside though.

At 9, I'd go with the upside.  That's why I'm a big Metcalf advocate at 9. Go with the upside.

Ed Oliver or Wilkins are who I'm hoping we draft.  Oliver offers more explosive upside while Wilkins has shown he can be a pretty good playmaker who can get to the QB himself.   Sweat is intriguing but I believe Oliver and Wilkins are the better prospects.

I think Jerry Tillery, who can be had a little later has more upside than Oliver.  With Tillery is about length.  They both can push the pocket, but Tillery's frame offers a lot more.  We'll see what happens, but I've read several reports that a lot of teams really like Tillery.

  3. At 9 I it would look like this for me:

    1.  DK Metcalf

    2.  Greedy Williams

    3.  Ed Oliver/Christian Wilkins

    4.  Surprise pick in a trade back - DT Jerry Tillery

    5.  Montez Sweat

Beyond 15 I'd take a TE but I wouldn't take one before then.

Why Metcalf could still be a possibility at 9.  First, John Brown's contract is essentially a 1 year deal.  They could cut bait with him next year.  In that time it could give Metcalf or some other rookie WR a chance to learn the offense, refine their routes so on and so forth.  It wouldn't put a lot of pressure on the rookie to come in right away.  So my thinking is because Brown's contract is structured the way it is, we are drafting a WR, whether that be rd 1 or somewhere else.  We are going to draft a WR.

Why Greedy Williams could be a possibility.  Levi played great down the stretch last year but this would be about can the position be upgraded substantially and you do that with talent.  This is an issue of talent vs technique.  Levi played well and did a good job because of technique.  And there is nothing wrong with that.  Williams however, is a guy that possess both talent and technique.  He's a superior talent and his technique may already be equivalent or beyond Levi's.  I don't know.  But what I would say is if you have an opportunity to substantially increase your talent at a position, DO IT.

Why Ed Oliver, Christian Wilkins at 9 and or Jerry Tillery in the early teens.  Right now the team has 3 DT's on the roster, one of which is a depth player.  Phillips is an unknown at this point so you need a high level of competition in this area.  Let two unknowns battle it out for the starting spot.  I do think they like Wilkins and Tillery over Oliver because of length and they were both just as productive on the interior in terms of sacks and QB pressures.  I wouldn't be surprised if Tillery was their top guy here.  Not only can he push the pocket and get pressures and sacks, but his length allows him to swat a lot of footballs.  From what I've read, a lot of teams love Tillery.  I think the Bills are one of them.  He's just scratching the surface and with his frame he brings a lot.

Why Montez Sweat could be a possibility.  The Bills need to get to the QB.  It doesn't matter if it is from the interior or the edge, they need to get to the QB.  So you bring in the best talent available on the board.  I'm not saying Sweat will be available.  But if he is, take him.  Honestly, I could see Gruden being star struck and the Raiders take Sweat at 4 and that pushes Josh Allen down the board.  Allen could be a  guy available that people thought would be gone.

This is all I would be thinking at 9 unless guys like Allen and Williams somehow fall to that spot.  Otherwise, I would try to leverage someone and move out of the spot.

Zay gotta step up.  He's way down on the depth chart now.  We may not be done either getting new WRs.

    Brown, Beasley, Duke, Foster.

Once we draft DK or Hakeem, he'll drop further.  How many we gonna keep?

Beane is doing to our WR corps like he did our DB corps when he got here.  run 'em all off and start with new (and better).

What does this say for Ray Ray?

I doubt we keep more than 6 and even if we do keep that many one or more will be required to provide some special teams contributions.

As for Ray Ray, he's most likely gone.  He'll be a camp body MAYBE.

Hey, we very well may be incorrect.  This was never some arrogant guarantee, just my gut feeling based on what McD and Beane have consistently said and based on how many new WR's I expected them to bring in.  So far, they have brought in 3 and are very likely to bring in at least one prominent rookie.

And now, looking at the WR room, I would put Zay already 4th on the depth chart today behind Foster, Brown, and Cole.  Not to mention Duke can still challenge to start or at least for relevant playing time too.  Then you still have McKenzie.

Now add a rookie into the mix, and where does Zay fit so "easily"?  Cole Beasley just took his slot job.  That means Zay now has to complete to start as WR1 or WR2 or he will be a bench and rotational guy.  Brown wasn't signed to sit behind everyone, so he is at least penciled into one of those 2 spots.  Foster already passed Zay in most peoples eyes, and then you will have Duke and a rookie pushing those guys too.

Zay may end up on this roster, but its FAR from a lock.  Slot is gone, Cole is the 100% for sure slot WR this year.  He we have 4 WRs who will challenge for the top 2 WR spots already...Foster, Brown, Zay, Duke plus a 5th one likely to get into the mix from the draft.  Not sure why anyone has great optimism that Zay will beat 3 or 4 other WR's to secure a starting spot.

He will likely be given the chance to, but he hasn't done well in pressure situations prior to this.  And if he doesn't beat out those guys for a starting spot, I think he will be traded for something like a 5th round pick to get some value before spending a season on the bench diminishes all trade value.

To add, the way I see it, Beasley and Brown are starters.  They did not sign them both this early and at those prices to be backups.  So that leaves it at a dog fight between nearly 4 guys.  I doubt we carry more than 6 WR's.  So, I see it the way you do.  Zay Jones, barring some miracle turnaround is in trouble.  As we have said time and time again:

    1.  He struggles to win on the perimeter.

    2.  He's not going to outrun anyone on the perimeter

    3.  He's been inconsistent with his hands.

With Beasley taking the slot role he's going to have to play outside which to me gives Foster the upper hand.  Foster needs to work on his route running but the one thing he can do that Zay cannot is run past someone.  He's worked on his hands and gotten better.  So even if we just went with our current group Jones may have already dropped to #4.  In any case if he's on this roster, then he's earned the hell out of it because these acquisitions have almost sealed that last nail in the coffin.  Let's say Zay is already #4 behind Brown, Beasley, and Foster.  What does Duke Williams provide?  Finally, if they bring in a high or mid round pick, what will they provide?  Zay is indeed in trouble.  I didn't see it before, but I do now.

  6. I'd still take Metcalf at 9 even with today.  Jones and Foster would have to battle it out for the 4th spot.  Beasley gets the slot and Brown is one of the outside guys.  I'd force Jones and Foster to fight for the #4 spot.  Jones, as we have seen, struggles on the perimeter.  Foster can get open on the perimeter but can he win consistently?  I'd still take Metcalf at 9.  Much more talented than both Zay and Foster.

Buffalo has to spend like 65 plus mil to reach its 3 year minimum for the cap.  So they probably have 1 big contract left.

I would take a look at Shane Ray.  He had 8 sacks in 2016 but completely fell of the last two seasons.  Give him a 1 year prove it deal.

Here is what spotrac had to say about Daryl Williams in the FA tracker.  Hope it happens.

The advanced metrics aren't too kind to Williams, but he's arguably the best available Right Tackle on the market. Because the Bills need one, and appear to be OK signing every Panthers' cast-off, this seems like a done deal.

I actually like Ja'Wuan James.  But it's looking like Denver and Minny likes him a lot too.

I hear what you are saying, I just think they are give Teller the inside edge to win the spot but if he cannot, that's where guys like Long come in.  I'm just saying right now until something else happens I think Long is the RG and Teller is the LG.  It might not stay that way.  But if it did and we just drafted one interior lineman I would not be upset so long as we have James or Williams added to the group.

  10. 4 minutes ago, H2o said:

Long is going to play one of the Guard spots now I would guess?

Yep and be the rotational guy at C.  So the way I see it, we need to get JuJwan James or Daryl Williams in here to solidify the OL.  I think right now we are looking at:

    LT - Dawkins

    LG - Teller

    C - Morse

    RG - Long

    RT - ????

Now I would like a better prospect at RG.  I think you have Long provide competition for Teller at LG and a Rookie at RG.  And he can serve as the swing interior lineman.  But if we do not take an interior lineman early I will not be upset by it so long as we can get James or Williams at RT.  We will have improved the OL talent wise by a ton.

If Jesse James contract is 6m+ a year then just find a way to draft Hockenson, Fant or Irv Smith.

I wouldn't be opposed to JJ at 6 mil.  I'd actually be happy to pay him that.  He is more than just a blocker.  Boyle's role is primarily a blocker and to me 6 mil per for just a guy that's a blocker is what's scary.

I think the creative approach is what we saw at the end of last year.

I believe we sign either Barr or Za'darious Smith. They play the LB spot and Zo slides to DE which slides Lawson to DT on passing downs. Lawson had some really nice success inside late last year.

Smith would be better here as a DE, which is what he played at UK.  I don't see him as a 4-3 outside linebacker.

Moss produced the same numbers in his agility drills.  Large wrs dont do as well in those drills.  By the looks of if it his training was concentrated on explosive moves.  That's why he did so well in the 40, vertical, and broad jump.

In terms of Wr.  What I think Buffalo needs most is an elite deep threat to pair with Allen's arm.  In Fa you have Jon Brown, Jj Nelson, breshad Perriman, and possibly Desaun Jackson or John Ross.  I would not call any of them elite, and Jackson isnt due to his age.  In the draft the only other guy besides Metcalf with similar deep threat potential is Brown.  For me his size is a concern but I do like him alot.

The reason I come back to Metcalf is he is significantly bigger than most of the other guys.  The height speed combo is rare, paired with his ability to track the deep ball.  I'm not saying he will be the next great Wr, but paired with Allen he could be.

This is what I've been saying all along.  When you factor in the strength of our QB, namely throwing the ball down the field, then you find a WR that fits what your QB does well and Metcalf is that guy in this draft on the perimeter.  If we had Brady at QB, I would be shouting for Isabella, Brown or some other quick twitch guy that's is an A+ route runner.  But that's not who we have at QB.  We have a guy with a superior arm, that likes to throw the football down the field.  We need to accentuate that.   The neck is certainly a concern and I would be asking around about his timetable for playing.  If he cannot play in July/August then yes, you pass on him at 9.  If he can, to me you take him IF he's there.

    BUYER  BEWARE !!

just watched film of Metcalf vs LSU Greedy Williams

greedy dominated him. Metcalf can't cut or get separation. only straight ahead over the top speed. unwilling blocker.

     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ta9jNtHxYM

How do you draw, 1) unwilling blocker; 2) can't cut; 3) can't get separation from that?  The majority of what he ran are go routes.  Name me one WR this year that got separation from Greedy Williams.  That's why he's the #1 CB in the draft.  Just because he couldn't outrun Greedy he can't get separation?  All that means is he couldn't get separation from Greedy but that doesn't mean he can't make plays.  He did have a couple of good catches with Greedy having superb coverage.

The pass at 00:16 shouldn't have been thrown to Metcalf.  That's a bad read by the QB

At 00:39 this is a fantastic match up.  Metcalf gets Greedy to commit pass interference here.

    1:05 quick hitch

1:14 Comeback route.  I would have liked to see him catch this one.

1:31 Did a good job of getting in the way as a blocker on the screen

    1:50 another quick hitch

2:30 Great 1 v 1 coverage the QB decides to go opposite of Greedy.  Looks like the Safety may have been cheating over to that side as he did at 00:16.  Whoever #5 is has to hold on to this one.

    3:00 another quick hitch

3:17 Comeback route vs off coverage.  LSU is giving them this to get off the field so to me this is not a grade play.

3:34 Stop and go.  QB is pressured.

4:27 that's just on DK there.  Gotta be more careful with his hands.

5:03, I would have liked to see the QB throw that one to Metcalf's outside shoulder.  Greedy made a great play there.

    5:52 - good block

6:04 catch on the comeback route.  Looked like it could have been a nasty leg injury on the fall but he wasn't injured.

    6:11 whiff block

6:17 blocks but it's insignificant since the play is going the other way

6:23 quick stop route vs off coverage

6:36/37 DB did a fantastic job of using the sideline.  Pass was overthrown anyway.

7:26 Too high from the QB

7:33 Slant route, QB read the right side.  Metcalf is open on the backside slant.  The coverage is good but he has the inside leverage.  QB scrambled once everything on the right was muddied.

    8:22 - tipped pass - curl route

    On these plays

00:24 RPO, I'm not sure I would say he's an unwilling blocker here.

Notice on every play what Greedy Williams is NOT doing.  He's not trying to press Metcalf, he's just running with him.  The Bama game showed what happens when guys try to press and run with him.  All in all, as an individual performance, not a bad game.  The bulk of LSU pass snaps were quick game concepts with Metcalf running Go routes.  However, they did have him run quick hitches, slants, comebacks, hitch and go.  So I  don't see why people keep spitting out the narrative of a 1 route WR.  Does he run the entire route tree, NOPE.  Does he get pressed?  No.  Did he dictate coverage?  To some degree.  00:16 the Safety is cheating over which results in an INT by the safety; 2:30 the safety is cheating over which results in a 1 v 1 where #5 just has to hold on to that pass.  So I don't see a bad game and I don't see him getting dominated in this game as you say.  He made some plays against the best CB in the country.  He had 1 offensive pass INT and he had 1 drop.  Otherwise looking at the tape and what Ole Miss was running vs what LSU was doing I thought he had a decent game.  The unwillingness of the best CB in the country to try and press him shows a great deal of respect for his ability at the line.

Why would you want someone at #9 with aimited route tree?

I don't know what else he can do I just know that's what he can do based on the tape.  Secondly, why wouldn't I want someone at 9 that fits my QB.  People are not looking at who we have at QB and what his strengths are.  Allen is a down the field thrower.  So why not get him a down the field WR.  To me Metcalf fits perfectly with our QB's strengths.  Highlight our players strengths and do the best to hide their weaknesses.

He's a top 5 off ball backer in the NFL isn't he? Definitely unexpected that he would hit the open market. Are they in trouble financially?

Not really, but I think it boils down to who they want to keep.  Do you keep your trench guys, Michael Pierce, Za'Darius Smith, Suggs or do you keep the off the ball linebacker who will be asking for a contract to cover all of what those guys will be getting?  They drafted Kenny Young last year and Peanut Onswar proved he can play in the league.  If anything I'd probably let him walk too and if I need to draft a rookie backer in rd 2-4 after adding a WR in rd 1.
