The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

Here's why the coronavirus may be killing more men than women. The US should take note By Katie Polglase, Gianluca Mezzofiore and Max Foster, CNN Updated 5:32 PM ET, Tue March 24, 2020 (CNN)Smoking, drinking, general poor health: Researchers say these are some of the factors that could explain why more men seem to be dying from coronavirus than women. In countries such as Italy, men represent nearly 60% of people who tested positive for the virus and more than 70% of those who have died, according to the country's National Health Institute (ISS). Even in countries like South Korea, where the proportion of women who have tested positive for the virus is higher than that of men, about 54% of the reported deaths are among men. But while health officials are starting to take note of these staggering numbers, the United States is not releasing the basic nationwide data that is crucial to understanding who is most vulnerable to the virus, according to a CNN analysis. Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House's coronavirus response coordinator, said at a White House press briefing on Friday: "From Italy we're seeing another concerning trend. That the mortality in males seems to be twice in every age group of females." Every hotspot has 'its own curve': How coronavirus cases are growing around the United States Regarding this data on Italy, Birx said in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer: "Just having the knowledge of that helps us in the United States so we can be very specific in talking to the American people about who to protect and how to protect them." close dialog Get coronavirus updates delivered to your inbox daily. When CNN asked the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for data split by sex for US cases of coronavirus and deaths by coronavirus, known as sex-disaggregated data, the CDC did not respond. Comprehensive data about those who have gotten sick could help inform more effective responses to the crisis. But public health researchers say that when governments such as the United States either don't collect, or don't publish their data, it's impossible for experts to gain an accurate sense of what's going on. Data divided by sex In collaboration with Global Health 50/50, a research institute examining gender inequality in global health, CNN analyzed the publicly available data from 20 countries with the highest number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 at the time of data collection -- March 20. The aim was to see why men seem to be dying more than women. But across the countries for which we have data - spanning nearly a quarter of the world's population - we found that men were 50% more likely than women to die after being diagnosed with Covid-19. "When we look at the data what we're seeing is that in every country with sex-disaggregated data ... there is between a 10% and 90% higher rate of mortality amongst people diagnosed with Covid if they are men compared to if they are women," says Sarah Hawkes, professor of global public health at University College London (UCL) and co-director of Global Health 50/50. Just sharing more info. But wouldn't count out risk to girls or for them being safe. More great info in article. But don't take this for sure. https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/24/health/coronavirus-gender-mortality-intl/index.html -

The results were reported at 6 p.m. Friday. “He had traveled up to the Buffalo area,” Watkins said of the man, who has been placed under mandatory quarantine for two weeks at home with his family. “We will continue to watch him very closely for symptoms” that could require hospital treatment, Watkins said. That resident had recently visited New York City and the Buffalo area, according to local health officials. At last report, there are 38 residents in mandatory quarantine in their homes and 13 in precautionary quarantines in their homes. That number has grown since Saturday’s report. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8177201/China-COVERING-extent-coronavirus-numbers-FAKE-spies-tell-White-House.html?ito=push-notification&ci=12068&si=4621469 China's reporting on coronavirus is intentionally incomplete, three U.S. officials revealed in a Wednesday report, adding its government is underreporting statistics on both the death toll and number of cases. The intelligence community handed over a classified report to the White House last week, one of the officials told Bloomberg News, and the report concluded that China's numbers are fake. The coronavirus outbreak originated from Wuhan in the Hubei province of China at the end of 2019 – but China has only publicly reported 82,361 cases and 3,293 deaths as of Wednesday. This would mean China is less impacted by coronavirus than the U.S., Italy and Spain. So far, according to a Johns Hopkins University of Medicine world tracker of the virus' impact, there are more than 190,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the U.S. and more than 4,000 people have died. The U.S. has the largest publicly reported outbreak of coronavirus in the world – skyrocketing this week starting over the weekend when deaths doubled from 1,000 to 2,000 in just one day. 'The reality is that we could have been better off if China had been more forthcoming,' Vice President Mike Pence said during an interview with CNN Wednesday afternoon, conceding that the nation has been more honest regarding coronavirus than other diseases over the years. 'I mean the reality is that China's been more transparent with regard to the coronavirus than certainly they were for other infectious diseases over the last 15 years,' Pence, who is heading the White House coronavirus task force, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. 'But what appears evident now is that long before the world learned in December that China was dealing with this, and maybe as much as a month earlier than that, that the outbreak was real in China.' Ambassador Deborah Birx, the State Department immunologist advising the White House on its response to the outbreak as part of the task force, said that China's public reporting influenced how other countries responded to the outbreak. 'The medical community made -- interpreted the Chinese data as: This was serious, but smaller than anyone expected,' she said at the daily coronavirus press briefing Tuesday evening. 'Because I think probably we were missing a significant amount of the data, now that what we see happened to Italy and see what happened to Spain.' -

Lol right. Just disagreeing only thing with others on testing. It is really important. Unsure how true this is but something to share. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8176707/Florida-governor-Ron-DeSantis-says-coronavirus-started-circulating-Super-Bowl.html?ito=push-notification&ci=12055&si=4621469 Florida governor Ron DeSantis issued a statewide lockdown Wednesday after revealing coronavirus first started circulating in Miami during the Super Bowl in early February. The Republican had so far refused to initiate a statewide lockdown despite cases of coronavirus there surging to nearly 7,000, with 857 people hospitalized and 85 dead. The order will go into effect Thursday at midnight and will last 30 days. But under increasing pressure DeSantis announced Wednesday: 'I'm going to be doing an executive order today directing all Floridians to limit movements and personal interactions outside the home to only those necessary to obtain or provide essential services or conduct essential activities.' The governor said officials cannot 'hamfist everyone into their bedroom' but urged people to act responsibly. He said he had consulted the White House of his decision. More than 30 others states had already issued such orders a week or more ago. -

GG testing does help to isolation the people that get the virus. Without testing the speed of it would be quicker. Testing people put them in isolation if positive. Hell people are being under quarantine if they don't get it mandatory quaratine.. Easier to put people in quarantine. -
