Lol, its really not.  He's tiny and constantly injured.  He is a JAG in a league full of these guys.

A guy like Justin Shorter was excellent on special teams and its something Beane mentioned last year when they drafted him.

Unless Hamler can play special teams, he won't be the 6th WR.

I am under the assumption the Bills are adding another body to this group after June 1st.

Just on a quick check, he's 10 lbs. heavier than Worthy.

I agree that they like their ST guys - but we really need that speedster to stretch the field, too.  I'm hoping this guy can fulfill the potential Denver must have seen to draft him in the 2nd.

  2. After watching some of his interviews - I like the guy as a person more than any of the other dudes picked ahead of him.

He doesn't seem to have any diva in him, which is rare w/ top receivers - but he also seems to have a ton of confidence.

I'm really excited about this pick.  Not the best WR in the draft by any means - but he may be the best for the Bills, and Allen.

Nothing changes with expectations. I expect the Bills to compete for and win the AFCE. I expect them to be one of the final 4 teams in the AFC competing for the Super Bowl. What happens after this season into next off-season depends on the results of this year.

I kinda feel bad for some of the fans who gave negative emojis to this.

This is 100% my expectation.  It likely will be as long as Allen is QB for the Bills - I would expect fans of KC and Cincy to feel the same.  Not really anyone else on a year-by-year - maybe Houston if Stroud doesn't have a sophomore slump.

  4. It's a futile obsession.

I want a #1 offense - not a #1 receiver.  We have 2 position units that have complimentary players to give even the best DC's nightmares - Tight End and Running Back.  And we have a solid O-line, and a very CAPABLE receiver corps, that has speed, good hands and versatility. And we still have a top 2 QB in the league.

This offense will be top 3-4 in the league.  I'm tired of the hand-wringing about the WR position, and not having a "true #1."  We almost beat the SB champs with our "true #1" barely showing up & dropping a game-changing pass.

  5. Not to disparage anyone here - but I always crack a smile when I see someone complain about a pick because of where they had that player on "their board."

I'm always kind of curious, too:  how did they put their board together?  Did they scour film of a huge # of collegiate players, all day, every day of the year?  Did they go to games and workouts?  Did they rigorously compare players at various positions with others who spent as much time as them watching and evaluating?

Because those are the things Beane & our scouts do.  I have a hunch that most here look at mocks for a few months, and check some youtube on only the top players - and that's about it.

  6. We always complained we didn't have a running game - w/ Davis & Cook, it could be our best year at that position in a long time.

We have 2 really good TE's - one of whom could be near the top in the league in the upcoming years.

Our O-line is young & deep.

Our WR corps is meh right now until they prove themselves - but there are loads of ways to score points in this offense without top-end WR talent.

Even if this does end up being a solid draft answer this question, DID WE INVEST IN HELPING THE MOST IMPORTANT AND ONLY PART OF ROSTER THAT WILL WIN US A SUPER BOWL? The answer is no.

While other teams with young franchise QB drafted multiple WRs in what was known throughout the league to be the best and deepest WR class in years, the bills took ONE. We have 11 picks and we took ONE. We traded back multiple times and even out of the draft completely because our FO and Coach think were “fine” at WR. We have one of the 2 best QBs in the entire league and lost our #1 and #2 WR this offseason and we took ONE WR.

    - Chargers HC, Jim Harbaugh, known for building through the lines before taking “luxury” picks like WR even took 3 WRs for his new franchise QB.

    - The NE Patriots, who are known to be historically awful at helping out their QB, gave their new franchise QB 2 new WRs in the first 4 rounds.

    - The Cincinnati Bengals have 2 top 15 WRs in the league and already have multiple solid #3 WRs from the last couple drafts on their roster, they took a high upside WR for Burrow in the 3rd round

    - Our rival Miami dolphins already flush with speed added 2 more vertical threats in the Washington boys in the 6th and 7th round.

Even if Beane and company were content with our WR room it’s not ok. Being content is a failure when you have Josh Allen as your QB. We should not be trying to prove he can do it on his own with limited options. Who’s our deep threat? Shakir and Samuel are going over the middle, coleman has great hands outside, Kincaid will eat and be the safety net but who is keeping the defense honest deep and why don’t we have multiple guys that can take the top off like KC (worthy and Hollywood) and Miami when we have the guy with the strongest arm in the league behind center? We should be overflowing his cupboard with riches and riches of WR talent so we can win a damn Super Bowl.

Finally, will a lot of these drafted players work out, yes. But now I’ll ask a different version of my initial question. GAME ON THE LINE, AFC CHAMPIONSHIP, NO MAJOR INJURIES, DID WE GIVE JOSH ALLEN EVERYTHING HE NEEDS TO BEAT THE CHIEFS?

Last year's SB champs had a worse WR room.

Tom Brady had a worse room for 6 titles.

It isn't just his words. It's his actions more than anything. Trading down whenever possible. Trading a pick this year for a pick next year. Cutting a bunch of veterans. Trading Diggs for a future pick and taking on a larger cap hit this year. When he says it's a "transition year" it's pretty easy to read into what that means.

By the way I have zero issue with the moves we made to trim the fat and prepare the team for the 2nd window of Allen's career. All of that I thought was necessary, and I appreciate that Beane didn't half ass it. My issue is that in a rebuild year his draft picks mostly represented short term thinking. A safety, a backup DT, and a backup RB end up being the middle of our draft. None of those picks are going to be difference makers in 2025, I'm sorry they just won't be. Carter is the only one that has a snowball's chance in hell. But they're all great guys with great back stories and they fill immediate needs, so Beane did the usual thing and stayed in his comfort zone.

Just once I would love for these guys to go outside their comfort zone. Instead of taking the team captain with a high motor (but no athletic upside for the motor to unlock), take the physical specimen that shows up late to meetings and talks back to his coaches. Instead of taking a safety or a low upside pass rusher in the 2nd round because they think he can start from day one, take a guy that is all boom or bust. Really go for it. They haven't half assed the tear down but they're half assing the rebuild, and you can already sense the excuses and low expectations they are trying to set ahead of time.

That's a pretty rough assessment.  I respect where you're coming from, but view it differently.  Bishop is going to start, imo - and be an upgrade over an aging, oft-injured Poyer.  And I think Davis could be big for us - most teams have 2 complimentary backs, and he brings something to the table that Cook doesn't really have.  We have needed that, and have generally looked to aging vets for it.

I don't think we sacrificed talent for high character, either.  There were no reaches in this draft for the Bills.  They took needs, good value, and leaders.  Leaders are awesome to have.  A very solid argument could be made that we have had very few over the years JA has been at the helm. Diggs was kind of the guy you're describing above - incredibly talented, but disruptive & a distraction.  He led by example, but not by strength of character.

Obviously, we won't know a thing until we're well into the season.  But think a lot of the guys we picked could make significant contributions this season, and that we could be surprised by how good the team is at the end.  Key word being "could."  I really don't know, but I think there is as much chance that we improve as there is we slide back.

I agree w the overall point that the team could surprise (personally not seeing a deep postseason run but it could happen) but the whole 'took KC to the wire last season' narrative is a red herring imo...an objective watch of that game would see a Bills team dominated and fortunate to be within a score at the end

I kind of know what you're saying here - but the results are the results.  Our biggest problem in that game was defense - we simply couldn't stop KC.  And that was kind of expected, with so many of our good & great players on D out, or playing hurt.  We didn't have our starting LB's, were missing 2 starting CB's, and 1 CB was playing pretty hurt.

And we could have stolen that game if our best WR could have hung onto a pass that - if caught - would have gone down as one of the most memorable in playoff history.

We beat KC in the regular.  We were as close as any team to their level in '23.

  10. Some fans are reading too much into the wording here.

We lost a bunch of guys.  Of course we're in transition.  If all we lost was the iconic duo of Poyer/Hyde, we'd be transitioning.  But we lost quite a few other guys who overall contributed to who this team WAS.

This by no means translates into "rebuilding," or not contending.  It's a wait & see, but this team could actually be better than the banged-up team that took the eventual SB champs to the wire in the divisional.

And we have neither of those things. And they didn’t lose the Super Bowl to the Giants because they traded a 4th for Randy Moss. And, in summation, your point is really bad

Sure.  We can just pretend that Josh Allen isn't a generational, HOF QB so you can take your cheap shot.

    What are you talking about?

Patriot's had two of the best slot WRs of all time at a time they had arguably the best TE in the history of the NFL.  When they did further address the WR spot, they went undefeated.

Tom Brady made them 2 of the "best slot WRs of all time."  They were both LATE rounders, and one was a QB.

  13. I enjoyed this write-up.  Thanks for posting.

I think many of us are a little colored by the expectation coming in that we'd trade up in the 1st - either for Thomas, or even Odunze/Nabers.

We didn't.  Had I known that coming in, I'd be absolutely happy w/ this draft.  This is the kind of draft a team that's going into the era of paying their top QB has.  It's all about filling in positions of need w/ solid players, some of whom might excel and become standouts.

There was some mockery of the fact that we got character/leadership guys, but man do I love that.  And hard workers.  I'm a Knicks fan, and the picks remind me of the kind of guys Thibodeau would want - scrappy, gritty, tough.

I think we got 3 starters, and at least 6 guys who make the roster & contribute.  I'm happy today.
