  1. I mentioned in another thread that they should put him in a behind the scenes talent evaluator/draft role like Scott Pioli in Atlanta. He can do what he does best, but behind the scenes due to his issues. Beane would be the GM who is the face of the FO.

I be fine with that role but not sure Beane is the best option as GM.

  2. I'm curious on Russ Brandon's role?

I think this might have had more to do with the ousting than McDermott. I doubt Russ made the decision but I think he had some involvement. Whaley was on the way out before McDermott was hired imo. There were rumblings about Whaley having little to no say in the new coaching search. I think this thorough restructuring of personnel is Pegula's doing as opposed to McDerm.

  3. These aren't complex dots to connect. I know a little bit about how things operate over there and within that organization. All signs point to that being the case. What are you seeing that says otherwise? You keensaying "conjecture" but you are doing the same thing but without evidence to dispute the perception. The guy CLEARLY ran the draft. That means he's already done something most head coaches never do. His power isn't going to be diminished from there. He won't let it happen.

So he clearly ran the draft by himself without the scouting department? How was that possible in 3 months when most scouting staffs put together their draft board in a year. Sure he had a say in it but not possible to run a draft for the first time when you have three months to prepare for it. His time has been spent evaluating his own team. Despite you knowing "how things operate" you haven't given any evidence other than saying you are connecting the dots. You can keep saying that but there is nothing public known that shows McDermott was or will be the main person in charge. Even if he was involved heavily in the draft which my guess is you can't prove there is no way you can tell who will be in charge going forward unless you are Terry Pegula.

  4. Every single action that's happened since he got here? He was handed the draft, they relieved all of football ops. What are you seeing that indicates he won't? Clearly, Pegula trusts him and his vision. No guy in sports has ever brought someone in to sacrifice their own power. If you are reading anything out there the consensus is that it is his show. He's not going to say, "you know what I don't want to decide the roster anymore." Guys naturally trust themselves to sink or swim with their decisions. Guys don't often get the luxury to do that but he has it already. The next guy will have a similar vision as McDermott, I will bet anything on that. I will be shocked too if the guy doesn't have previous ties to him. He is the most powerful and most qualified football mind in the building at the moment. Who else at OBD is qualified to hire the guy?

This is still conjecture. You don't know if he was running the draft. You are assuming based on how you see the facts. You don't know what is going on in OBD or what Pegula's thinking is. You don't know why Whaley was fired. All you can say is what the media has been feeding you and all that is conjecture. Give facts and not opinions. I am not ruling out Beane as GM but I know there is more to it than McDermott being the strong voice in the building. No business man, especially one as successful as Pegula gives complete control to someone he has been employing for 3 months. There are things happening that we don't know. Most on here were convinced Anthony Lynn would be the next coach based on media and how did that turn out?

  5. If it's one thing I am sure of the names public don't include the whole list. I think it won't be limited to candidates McDerm will know. Everyone was sure that Lynn was the next coach of the Bills because he had the inside track and Whaley wanted him and he ended up in a different city. Sometimes the media doesn't have the whole story.

  6. He is in charge of it and has been. He made the draft decisions. That isn't going backwards. Someone else will be in title and work with him closely but the situation will be more similar to the Patriots than the Jags. Someone with ties to him will be hired to run the personnel department and McDermott isn't going to bring someone in that takes away from what he already has. They will work together for sure but at the end of the day he will be the most powerful guy in football ops.

    Again based on what?

  7. Wolfe and DeCosta, as much as I like them, are probably not realistic options. Both seem to have hand-shake deals in place to replace the current, getting-up-there-in-age GMs of their respective teams.

Except Wolf interviewed for two jobs just a few months ago....

He has that power already. It's been pretty well documented. That's the point. They think so highly of him that they are clearing everyone else out and he will be VERY involved in the GM hire. It will be his guy and that guy isn't coming here to be more powerful than him. McDermott has the power now and he isn't conceding it.

Where is the documentation? It just seems to be conjecture of what is going on. If he truly had the power why wouldn't he be in charge of the personnel department. He isn't as powerful as you think.

  8. Really? You don't think that they would have cleared out all of football ops without him agreeing? He is the guy with the power there. That's not changing anytime soon. That's why they aren't getting some big name GM. The best case scenario is a young guy, with a good working relationship with McDermott and a similar vision. I'm not saying that it is a problem but you aren't getting a Coughlin type of guy in here now. The power will be coming from the HC's office in Buffalo.

No I honestly believe the complete football ops wipeout is a Pegula reset. If it weren't I believe McDerm would wait for the new GM especially if it was someone he trusted. I seriously doubt McDerm has been given that much power in 3 months. He might have made picks for the draft but honestly who else was going to do it?

  9. For those of us who love the CFB season... here is the first mock of the "new year." It's fun to look back at these a year from now. Btw he has the Bills passing on Sam Darnold at 7 and taking a Bama DL. Draft order is based on SB odds.

    @nfldraftscout

    Early 2018 thoughts:

    - Good QB potential

    - Ohio State is loaded

    - Strong LB, CB, OT class

    - WR, DL, TE look iffy

After Cyrus, Dareus and Ragland I doubt we pick from Bama for a while.

  10. Not at all, that's why Whaley and the entire scouting staff are gone. They are remaking football ops to match his vision.

Not sure I buy that. I think McDermott had a little to do with the firing but ultimately Whaley was never in line with the coaches from Marrone to Ryan to McDermott and it finally caught up with him.

  11. This is a really good post and along the lines of what I am thinking. The guys that have options aren't going to pick a spot where they are below the HC. For all intents and purposes that's the case here as McDermott will have a large say in their hiring. He has the power in the organization now.

I think this line of thinking is flawed. If McDermott had all the power he would be picking the GM, he has little say in it at this point.

  12. He would be a good choice but its going to be a guy McDermott has a connection with.

Whaley wasn't fired because of McDermott not being able to work with him so I believe that won't have much to do with who the GM is. We needed a GM that had total control of his scouting department and instilled confidence, that is why he was let go. Excellent scout but didn't command respect.

  13.

Eliot Wolf was just promoted to Director of Football Ops at Green Bay last year. Why would he want to come here?

If McD can't work with him, McD should GTFO. But I think the fix is in and Whaley was fired because McWrestler already has someone lined up he thinks is better

Because he wants to be a GM. He has been sought after for the Colts and 49ers job but they ultimately went with someone else. Buffalo is a similar town imo to Green Bay, cold small market and rabid fanbase. I think if we offered the job to Wolf he would see the symmetry.

Many good GM candidates will not accept the flat structure the Pegulas want, its just not how its done in the NFL. So here is to hoping someone is ok with it that is worth a damn.

I think Pegula has been open to the structure based on the candidates. Pegula is a business man and a successful one at that. He will do his best to get the right man. I also don't think it will be the KC guy or Panthers guy simply because they know how to work with McDerm but maybe those two would take a job like this because they know he is the head coach.

  14.

I'd ask "what is your evidence" but from the past, I know: "because you believe it"

What Whaley has said in the past is "It was a Bills pick" so he owns it - which is the company man speak.

There is no direct evidence but it was known he was taking over that offseason similar to Whaley having nothing to do with the picks this year. Also his ideal mold of QB is the athletic style as he has shown with Taylor and Cardale as well as Thad Lewis. Look at the QB room and that should show you all you need to know about style of QB, none could throw but all could run.

  15. I like what's happening so far but fear things are happening in the wrong order.

Generally, you hire a GM and that person hires a coach that aligns with the teams approach and philosophy. But we already have a HC and are looking for a GM who aligns with the HC. Will that work? It might but this could also limit the number of potential candidates willing to come into this situation. On the other hand you can always fall back on the there's only 32 jobs like this out there.

Yesterday Pegula's said Whaley was being relieved of his duties but the fact is DW was relieved of those responsibilities long before being fired. McDermott has been running the FO and called the shots in the draft. So specifically what are the duties of the GM in this situation and who will be making the final decision on the 53 man roster? Please don't let me hear them say it will be a 'team' effort. If I'm a veteran GM or a high-potential candidate I would think twice on what I could be getting into here.

Other than the move up for Dawkins, which might have been unnecessary, the draft was good. NE took an OT who rates well with the 21st pick and it's not clear if anybody else was thinking OT in front of the Bills in the 3rd. Not much help for the defense as those extra picks traded away could have helped.

Love the extra 1st they got from KC and this season my second favorite team will be whoever the Chiefs are playing that week.

I think McDermott's hiring is consistent with what they will look at from a GM. The only downside would be if the GM states he doesn't want McDerm but not sure if that will surface as an issue. McDermott looks like probably the best option out there this year. Hiring a GM with Rex still here would have been a bigger issue.

  16. Russ Brandon will be involved in GM search...checkmate.

Yet he will be part of hiring new GM...per Terry Pegula

Not part of hiring but be there to answer questions. Pegula hasn't been in the hiring phase of a GM, Brandon has. Pegula is making this decision because he doesn't want to spend tons of money again by having to fire someone early. Brandon has no final say like people keep thinking.

  17. I would personally like to see us go after Eliot Wolf for GM. There are some very good options with Veach from KC, Beane from Carolina and DeCosta from Baltimore but I could see Wolf as a superstar GM. First he has a wealth of talent as well as good family lines with his dad Ron, which I am sure could help in running an organization. Eliot comes from a solidly run organization that understands how to draft and develop a good consistent football team. He has also been involved in scouting players since he was 14 and watched scouting videos at the young of 10 with his dad. Who else would you want to learn player scouting from than Ron Wolf? He also doesn't freak out at press conferences...

  18. I think they had every intention of keeping Whaley but they probably saw the discord between Whaley and the newest coach as with Whaley in the past and decided it was too toxic to keep Whaley. Also Pegula probably realized that from McDermott that roster construction was majorly flawed. Ryan lost out temporarily but when Whaley had the same issues with McDerm Whaley had to go.

  19.

I looked at the number of players we drafted from 2013-2016, how many remained with the team, and how many are still in NFL. The latter is very important because that is an indicator of your "ability" to spot talent in the drafts. I then compared your performance to that of our esteemed rivals, New England Patriots. And the results are interesting:

    gXIOLGP.png

In those 4 years we drafted 28 players to Pats' 36. Of the 28, 15 still remain with the team as of today. That's 54%. Looking at the pats, of the 36, 18 players are still on their roster as of today. So we have exceeded Pats' team retention by 4%. Nice.

Now let's look at over-all talent evaluation. How many of our players are still on NFL rosters, vs. those who are no longer NFL players. Of the 28 players we drafted, 24 are still in the league, or 86%. Of the 36 players the esteemed Pats drafted, only 27 remain in the NFL. That's 75%. Here, Bills and Whaley have outperformed World Champions by 11% points.

Doug, it is clear now. it's not your fault this team hasn't won. You can only bring them in. You aren't the one coaching them.

The Pats always draft at the bottom of each round we draft near the top. They trade down and gain more picks, we trade up to get higher picks. They trade a lot of picks to get proven players we don't. Whaley overall may make better picks but he certainly didn't have a pulse on the team and how to construct one.
