  1. This is the deepest draft at WR in some time, there is no need to move up imo. Identify your guy which Beane already said would be versatile and not necessarily be an x, o or slot WR but can play him anywhere. So who are some WR in this draft who are fast, can separate and who have played both outside and inside and those are the players we should be looking at.

Here is Steve Smith Sr. take on the WR class.

His view of WR Xavier Leggette is interesting to me, because that was who I thought I was seeing when I watched him but to hear it from a legit boss at the position makes me like him even more imo.

While I agree with your thrust, Diggs tied for 8th in TDs, not 4th. And he was 7th in the league in receptions, not 6th.

When 7 guys got more TDs than you did, you are either 8th or tied for 8th. Not 4th.

I understand what you're doing there. But it's not just misleading but invalid.

By that logic, you could say that Quinton Morris was tied for 11th in receiving touchdowns in the league, and that linebacker Terrel Bernard was tied for 12th with his total of zero behind only 11 other totals. Not 11 other players. 11 other totals.

That is not how rankings work. If 200 guys got more TDs than  you, than you are 201st.

If you're desperate, you could say that Quinton Morris had the 11th highest total number of touchdowns. But even that is wildly misleading. The way to say it is that he was tied for 159th in TDs with his total of one TD. More specifically you could say that he's in a 90-way tie for 159th in receiving TDs.

I don't believe it's invalid but to each their own. Regardless of the rankings he was top 10 in all accept yards.

WR1 is absolutely a dire need.

WR2 has been a dire need for years and ignored.

Now Diggs is approaching WR2 status and the WR room is still lacking a true WR1.

I like Beane … but his refusal to address the WR position has been painfully consistent.

Diggs was 6th in the league in receptions, 13th in the league in yards and tied for 4th in the league in TD, I don't think it's time to panick just yet. He needs some help for sure but with Kincaid, Samuel, Cook, Knox, Shakir and hopefully a 1st round rookie it appears Diggs will finally get some much needed help.

As we get ready for the draft, and I get ready for the TSW Mock Draft staring next weekend, there's been a lot of conversation about needing to draft a wide receiver early.  While I don't disagree with this, I do wonder what type of receiver we are looking for and what impact will they make on the offense.  Before I can make that decision, there's a few things that need to be considered

    • Diggs is under contract with a sizeable hit for this year and next.  We could release him next season, but it would incur a 22 mil dead cap hit and only save us 5 million.  Diggs has also gone on record saying that he will not restructure his contract to help the Bills cap space.
    • If we bring in a capable number one receiver, how does Diggs handle being the number 2 guy?  Emotional support isn't high on his capacities.
    • We are stacked at inside receivers.  Between Shakir, Knox, Kincaid, and Samuel, the slot position is locked up and deep.
    • How do we even utilize a receiver that's not Diggs or a slot?  My biggest criticism of Brady is that I don't feel like he really took advantage of the mismatches we could have created with two Tight Ends and doesn't scheme players open very well.  McVay is a great example of a coach who gets people like Kupp wide open.  Brady doesn't seem to be able to do that
    • Was Davis' decline due to his ability or playcalling?  To me, it's a little of both.  Davis had some mental blunders in both routes and drops, but he was a big body speed guy, that on paper, most of us would clamor to draft again.  So even if we get another player like Gabe, will we be able to utilize him?
    • Free Agent Wide Receivers in 2025 look rough.  There's isn't a #1 guy that will be available
    • Some mock drafts only have 5 wide receivers going in the first round.  If that's the case, there will be some great talent available in round 2 that is more than capable of becoming WR1

With all that being said, do we need to prioritize a receiver that can become out WR 1, knowing Diggs is here for the next two years, or do we just need another weapon that can compliment what we have?  Even with Davis being MIA in most games, Josh put up good numbers with who we had.

To me, the secret answer is what Beane did with Samuel.  Samuel is documented to have the 3rd best separation in the NFL on cut routes, something badly needed on this team.  Beane also wanted to bring in Harty for a similar goal.  I think Beane wants quick guys that can create space, that Brandy can use wherever he wants on the field.

So what receiver, if any, needs to be a priority?  A 6'+ receiver who can eventually take over for Diggs in 2 years?  A burner, like Hill, who we can move around in motion a lot to create mismatches from motion?

My answer, and I vomit saying this, is best player available.  If that happens to be a receiver that can lineup outside, then okay.  But if there is a difference maker at another position available or a receiver that is only going to be lumped into our slot guys, then I go with the difference maker at another position.  If this draft is so deep at receiver, I might wait and get someone in the mid rounds with the potential of a #1 guy, and if it doesn't work out, we have two more years to draft the right person.

Here are ESPN's rankings of WR's with a grade of 80 or higher.  Only one player is shorter than 6'.  Quite a few of these guys could easily be there in the second round:

    • Marvin Harrison - 94 - 6'3"
    • Malik Nabers - 93 - 6'
    • Rome Odunze - 92 - 6'3"
    • Adonai Mitchell - 90 - 6'2"
    • Brian Thomas Jr - 90 - 6'3"
    • Xavier Legette - 89 - 6'1"
    • Ladd McConkey - 88 - 6'
    • Xavier Worth - 87 - 5'11"
    • Keon Coleman - 87 - 6'3"
    • Troy Franklin - 85 - 6'2"
    • Devontez Walker - 84 - 6'2"
    • Jermaine Burton - 82 - 6'
    • Ricky Pearsall - 6'1"

I don't think just clarifying a WR as "Diggs replacement" is a fair assesment, how about more weapons at Josh disposal? It's been Diggs or bust pretty much since we traded for him and it's obviously taken it's toll. Now add Kincaid, Knox back, Diggs, emergence of Shakir, Samuel and now a rookie to take the top off of defenses. We aso all know too well that injuries can easily derail everything, if our offense gets hit with injuries or our defense again maybe we'll need to rely heavily on the offense which we should anyways. I don't think it's wise to think any of these players will be there for us at 60 but these are just my opinions. We've already invested heavily on our DL and I think it's backfired on us... a 1st for groot, 1.9 for Oliver, 2nd round picks on Basham/Epenesa, all these are solid player but so far none have been difference makers especially when we need them in the playoffs. Get Josh as many weapons he needs along the OL and at WR/TE so we just need Josh to outscore opponents. I'm not saying never draft  DL because it hasn't really worked out but I wouldn't this season, this year needs to be soley focused on Allen.

Let me start by saying I come in peace! Just having a conversation here. I know this is kind of a negative Josh post.

What do you think? Does it matter to you if he doesn’t train or work on his game as much as he use to?

How could you, I or any non Bill possibly know what he's doing in the offseason? Just curious.

  6. I doubt a single thing changes, they still need a future replacement for Diggs and if I know this, you guys know this, then all of the Bills staff knows this as well. This is 1 of the best classes in quite awhile for the WR position and it wouldn't make much sense not to address it this year. Now I'm not saying it has to be round 1, maybe they like Ladd McKonkey, Keon Coleman or Ja'Lynn Polk who arent viewed as 1st round talents but might be in a different draft class since this one is pretty stacked.

Why would this signing preclude them from taking Mike Williams out of curiosity? Brown costs 7 mill vs this year's cap. After the Mahomes restructure, KC had about 15-16 mill in cap space for 2024. If they trade Sneed as expected, that will clear another 20 mill. So KC would have about 28 mill in cap space with no obvious holes anywhere on the roster other than a likely desire to add another receiver and someone to compete for the job at left tackle.

It might not but until they actually make the trade, I don't think Mike Williams will accept a contract less than Marquise Browns (again i could be wrong) , which would make their cap pretty tight but as we definitely know the cap can easily be manipulated.

  8. This is way better news then adding Mike Williams imo. Brown has always (at least to me) been a 1 trick pony. He'll be an upgrade over MVS and should obviously do well with mahomes throwing to him but I would have hated to see Mike Williams end up there.

Lol.  He’s a slot receiver.  He had 7 carries last year. 7!

I’d love this signing if we didn’t have a better player already in slot.  Had Beane signed someone like Samuel when Beasley left I’d be happy as anyone else here, but Shakir has developed into a very good player, who was one our best offensive players down the stretch last season.  To me this is just over priced depth with money that would be better spent elsewhere.

He played outside WR (And had his best stats that season) at Carolina with Joe Brady at OC. I don't think it's fair to say he is a slot WR only imo.

  10. Great signing, he should be a solid contributor, solid route runner and at some point ran a 4.31 40 but he is older now so maybe a 4.35 40? :D Solid hands also, seriously I think this a much better pickup than Hollywood Brown, I have no idea why people were wanting that guy, talk about a 1 trick pony with injuries no less!

Yes, prior to injury. And now he's 32 playing one of the most physically taxing positions. Are we going to be able to count on him in January?

I don't mean to criticize every signing but I was really hoping the Bills would use this offseason to get younger at every position, and cheaper at less important positions. I thought after all the cuts last week that this was the plan and I was elated. But here we are signing a 32 year old nose tackle.

Ed oliver is only 26, paired with Jones that is a formidable duo imo. We re-signed AJ Epenesa who is 25 years old, 26 year old Conner McGovern is the new center, re-signed S Cam Lewis whos 26, OG David Edwards has been promoted to G an he's 26. It seems like Jones is the only older dude we re-signed. I think we'll definitely add a DT in the draft, maybe 2.

They were a playoff team last year. They should just go 5-12 with Pickett and try to find an answer at QB.

    Tomlin gonna Tomlin.

They just went to the playoffs with Pickett and Trubisky, Tomlin has never had a season below .500 so how are they going 5-12?

  13. I think we could replace AJ Epenesa with Dorance Armstrong, I don't think Armstrong will command huge money since he has limited snaps but in those snaps he had 7.5 sacks. Also if we don't re-sign DT Daquan Jones then Justin Jones of the Chicago Bears would be a decent pickup imo. Probably re-sign CB Dane jackson also.

Just curious if those in the know, know if Buffalo is changing anything about their conditioning program.  Yes, every team has injuries, but Buffalo was absolutely crippled by them, both in number and the quality of player taken down.  And it's been two seasons in a row now.

To be clear, I'm asking seriously.  I'm no doc, or that knowledgable about the specifics of the different injuries or how teams handle this kind of stuff.  I know it's been bad luck, and I honestly don't know if there is anything we could change/improve to try and help cut down on them.

I think this team can go all the way, and would hate to see a third straight season sniped by yet another epidemic of injuries.

I hope we're not playing overseas this year.  And I'm not thrilled we're at Detroit again.  Hope their turf doesn't claim more victims. >.>

My source said these will be under the Bills uniforms...
