  1. I somewhat disagree. I'm not worried because I don't envision Mahomes becoming a franchise QB. If he does become a franchise QB it's a blunder this team might not live down. If TT becomes our solution at QB he will be 32 or 33 years of age when Mahomes rookie contract runs out. With TT's style of play I believe his career could be towards the end at that point. Regardless of what TT does for us the next four or five years we might need someone soon after. If Mahomes is a franchise QB at that point we will be regretting that selection. On the other hand if Peterson becomes our franchise QB it doesn't really matter what Mahomes does. I just can't see Peterson becoming that guy. I think his ceiling is being a good backup.

I think it's a little overstated. We and every other team who passed on Mahomes will survive if he does well and KC will survive if he doesn't become a star

  2. I dont know if anyone seen this:

Per reporter Vic Carucci, Whaley's firing was "fulfillment of a condition of McDermott's employment." This had been the rumor for months. It's a little surprising the Bills were willing to go through the public motions for weeks on end, but then again, they're not a good franchise. They're hoping McDermott will change that. So Vic has a copy of McD's contract?

  3. Is it? If they knew SW was going to have a healthy and productive season in 2017, would the Bills pick up the option? Yes, they would. So how will SW think about this decision ? Not like a fan, he's going to think " all the work I've done and gotten injured and rehabbed and you don't want to risk paying me? " That's what he gets for his efforts. No doubt he will use that as a motivating factor if he is healthy , to play his way out of here. If he has that good season in 2017 , he will let them know he's not signing the tag.

You are not reading correctly. If they knew he was going to be healthy in 2017 this would be a non-issue

  4. Bringing in an active alcoholic, which is apparently the case (based on a basic web search it at least appears that way) is a mistake for both the team and the person. Assuming this is the case he needs to get his life together before taking on another high pressure job and this is exactly the sort of anarchy Pegula should be avoiding.

    Precisely

  5. Right. The concern has to be what would Watkins want to do. If he blows up and stays healthy all 16 games then suddenly he has all the levarage over a coach/GM who just refused to offer him the 5th year.

Sammy was irked by fans comments on social media, how is he going to react to the team pulling his option which protects him against injury, all while he is rehabbing a foot. The same broken foot he played with for the same team...

No loyalty in this buisness, I get that. I just think it's a little early for this coach and organization to start playing hard ball with one of its more talented players. It won't be long until coach needs a player like Sammy on his side in that locker room.

If you're saying Sammy wants a guaranteed 13 million even if he's hurt, then it's easier to understand the team's reluctance.

I hope two things: that McD is correct that they had a good conversation and by extension a good relationship, and that Dennison will actually use him the right way and get the ball in his hands on bubble screens etc and let him be the guy he should be.

  6. I understand "trying to protect yourself" as a franchise, but I also understand that your most talented players help you to win games. Dez, Julio, Edelman, they have all returned to form after surgeries as such. It is stupid not to pick up the 5th year because A) He is one of our most talented players. B) He is only 24 years old. C) The 5th year option is cheaper than the Franchise Tag. D) It gives us another year of control at reasonable value for a top tier WR talent. Sammy will walk, get paid, and put up huge numbers with a better QB getting him the ball.

All the above are contingent on his health.

McDermott indicated he had a good conversation with him. One hopes it was to the effect of saying we just want to be sure your foot is set to go and when you play great this year we'll write a new contract.

  7. I don't take Reid's assessment as infallible or even especially acute. Mainly I reference his evaluation as a sign that a legitimate coach who was not dealing out of desperation chose to draft Mahomes top ten. It is not ridiculous to argue that Mahomes is a potential franchise qb, though individuals are free to judge differently, of course.

I agree . Any QB picked is potentially a franchise QB or a failure. More fit the latter category of course.

I attribute Reid picking him early to the seeming inability for teams to realize that when you reach way up for a QB it rarely succeeds. Mahomes is athletic with a big arm, but has never taken a snap under center and comes from a team and offense that has seem little if any success sending QBs to the NFL. If this kid actually turns into something Reid will earn his QB guru rep.

  8. F Tag is the average of the top 5 contracts for the position. That's my understanding anyways.

That's my understanding and that would be similar to the amount they would have paid picking up the option at current salaries. Assuming the tag number goes up next year it would cost the Bills a few million more if the tag him for 18. But they'd be happy to do so I would think if he has a good year with no injuries.

  9. People don't seem to understand how good he is and what he is thought of around the league.

I think he's one of the best in the league when he's on the field. The data no one has here is the medical data.

Again a very tough call but it seems that McD was honest with Sammy. Sammy is on record saying he wants that kind of structure and accountability.

He plays this year and comes out the first few games blazing the Bills should make him a big offer and lock him up. If he comes out and shows effects from injury then it was the right call to not pay a lot.

  10. That's baloney. For what the Bills gave up and the talent Watkins has shown while healthy it's an easy decision. There is some risk to guaranteeing money to an athlete and this is part of it. You don't play hardball with your most talented guy because he has a reoccurring injury.

Jones fractures have always caused extended problems in athletes and led to second surgeries. This is not Byrd telling people his feet are sore. This is well documented.

Losing a year of leverage for what? If Sammy has a slow start due to the foot do you think he is signing here for less than that tag? No.

It is sensible for both sides. Let's see how he plays. If as hoped for his foot does well and he tears it up, we have a ton of cap space next year to make him a big offer. Sounds like McD has had good conversations with him so no bridges are burned.

  11. This is by far the dumbest move made in a long time. Dumb. Dumb. Just dumb.

No it's not. I'm a big Sammy fan but it's a very tough call. He's injured still so it's good for both parties. If he can't recover the Bills don't overinvest and if he does they can tag him and/or offer him a big long term deal before he hits free agency. For Sammy he can prove he's healthy enough for the big deal.

  12. Well, I take it that Darnold, Rosen, and Allen are also assumptions. Andy Reid thinks Mahomes has the potential to be a franchise qb or he wouldn't have paid the price to go up and get him. Naturally, and I did not think it needed to be stated, when I say franchise qb, I mean a prospect with fairly good potential to be a franchise qb. Isn't that inherent in the draft when one is not selecting proven NFL commodities? Teams have missed on qbs taken at the top before. Let's see how certain the 2018 class looks a year from now and whether or not we are in a position to grab one. We know for sure we could have drafted Mahomes or Watson or Kizer for that matter.

Agree. No one knows for sure what will happen. One thing I would ask is where Reid got the reputation as some QB guru. He was handed Favre when he coached in GB and other than McNabb (who I'd argue was good but not great) who are the other QBs he's mentored?
