First, I didn't say he was de facto elite; I said that when he's on the field he performs at an elite clip on a per-target basis.

I've said repeatedly that the largest impediment to his success on the field is lack of targets, followed pretty closely by availability issues.

As to the 70% number, well, it's higher than the percent of games played by Julio Jones and Antonio Brown through their first 3 seasons, so perhaps we can hold off on that talk for a second.

I would hope Dennison structures his passing offense around Sammy. If Sammy is healthy then, he will have a great year, he'll love that he's the guy in the offense, we give him a big deal, he signs it, and move on from there.

  2. I like the direction McDermott is taking the team but if elite CB play is not crucial for his scheme and this was a deep DB draft, why not take a QB at 1 and a DB at 2? There's nothing a great CB can do for us that approaches what a great QB can do for us. Our defense is talented and simply needed better coaching than the Ryans provided. If any of this year's QB crop comes in and lights us up they'd better hand out motion sickness bags at the Ralph. This year is already starting to feel like a tank.

Would you and others like this just stop with the tanking stuff. I wish the mods would ban that word.

The reason they did not take a "great" QB in the draft is they did not think any of the ones drafted early were "great". I can just as easily say that if none of these QBs pan out (which is more common than having them become "great") and White turns into an All Pro teams like KC will kick themselves for giving up so much instead of identifying a good CB.

  3. The kid had no serious character concerns.......we should have picked him at 27 cleaned his shoulder up and have a beast at linebacker for the next 4 years . I rather have him then pick a DB in a DB rich draft. This is when you need a GM who can look at long term as oppose to a first year coach trying to get team ready this year......good thing I gave up my club seats Sec 231 row1 seats 5-10. I can watch this tire fire free on TV. My 12K can go towards something else

First, what this shows is that NFL front offices have a lot more information on players than we do. Second, I'd like someone to explain to me why some feel the compulsion to announce they are not going to renew, or they say they are done with the team, etc, etc. Do what you want, no reason to announce it to the world.

  4. It will prove that this was a GIGANTIC failure of a move. In a draft where CB was one of the deepest positions, the Bills had a chance to land the BEST of the bunch. Then, at 27, the Bills also decided that picking the 6th or 7th best CB was better than fixing the right side of the line for good.

The Bills organization has failed to make the right decisions for so long that it is tough to put any faith that they will turn that extra first rounder into the franchise QB that has been lacking for so many years. If they pull it off next year, this will be the best move ever. Until that actually happens and they get their guy, I have a hard time believing that this trade down will pay off.

What I don't understand is that by making that move last night, it clearly states that this is a rebuilding year (as if we didn't already know that). If that truly is the case, why the hell is Kyle Williams (and to a lesser extent Shady) still here. Why not make THIS year the one where they go all in to fix the problem? As it stands right now, Browns Jets and and Bills will all be looking to get their guy in 2018. If the Bills miss out by overachieving to that 7-9 record again, they will most assuredly look like they messed up yet another draft in a long line of them.

And when the supposed great QBs in the 2018 draft turn out to be not so good, what then?

  5.

    But who is advising now?

With Pegula's flat structure, when there is a healthy disagreement between the HC and GM peers, who settles it? Who is making that ultimate decision so you can go forward even if you have to "disagree and commit"?

You have your GM and HC work it out like adults.

I confess I do not understand how adding yet another management layer helps in terms of a "czar". To me it seems like the GM and HC would never truly have responsibility and would be looking over their shoulder all the time. I think the owner did the right thing by using the league committe as a guide for a HC. Now get the GM, get out of the way, and let them do their jobs.

  6.

Except that the fingermarks of that have been all over the draft choices made - big hulking behemoth OL like Kouandjio, Cyrus Richardson when Marrone was here and that's what he wanted, DB like Russ Cockrell when Schwartz was here and that's what he wanted. Now Ryan is here and Cockrell doesn't fit, let him go play for playoff contender Pittsburgh, bring in smaller OL like Miller, a NT type, different profile of LB. The problem hasn't been that Whaley hasn't tried to bring in players that fit what the coach is trying to achieve; the problem is that Whaley has had to switch gears on what that is, every 2 years.

Something else. It's a mistake to characterize Belichick as having a "type" of player he needs. The only type of player Belichick needs is someone who will unswervingly "do your job" and do what is asked of them day in day out.

This can be seen by the way his D and his O both evolve to maximize the talent of the players they have. Example: look at 2011 when Brady had Welker, Gronkowski, Hernandez, and Branch as targets and passed for >5200 yds.

Now look at 2013, Hernandez in the pokey, Gronkowski in the trainer's room only starts 6 games, Amendola is not proving the Welker replacement they'd hoped for, Edelman does step up. Brady passes for 1000 less yards, they make up the difference with the rushing game, and the SOBs still win.

Bear this in mind, because if McWrestler truly needs a "type" of player to win we're not going forward much. I go with Wade Phillips who said if you can't fit good players and use them to good effect in your scheme, maybe you should look at whether your scheme is a problem.

That's what I meant when referring to Belichick, and wasn't clear enough. Belichick wants a certain type of mentality would have been a better way of describing what I meant. You see hints of that in McD with the past draft. Rather than take the LB out of Bama, they chose the DB out of LSU with a solid four year record, valedictorian, good citizen, etc.

I have no idea how McD will do in the league as a HC. Look around the league and the vast majority of HCs are guys that were coordinators who then got their shot as HC. Some work out , some don't. I will say I like the approach thus far, and I am sure whomever comes in as GM will have a tightly shared visions of how to build a winning team and organization.

As for Whaley, I have commented before that he reminds me of the old company man of business back in the day. Do what the boss wants, don't make trouble, keep your head down and do your job. I wonder if Doug ever truly thought his job as GM was to articulate what he saw as a successful winning model that he'd fight for. Or did he view his job as the company man who does the bosses' bidding or HC in this case) and just get what the HC of the day wanted. I don't suppose we'll ever know, but I am sad it ended the way it did and I hoe he winds up running the personnel department for another team, because it may be a better fit for him.

  7.

Yes. Moreover, any credible assessment of the players Whaley drafted, must take into account that Whaley has had to try to build 3 teams for 3 head coaches with different offensive and defensive schemes.

I don't get the "drafting players, not building a team" line.

I understand where he's coming from there. Look at the Pats. Belichick has a definite type of player he needs to play the way he wants his team to play. So when drafting you need to have that paramount in your scouting, etc. sometimes a player with lesser apparent talent is the guy you want to draft because he's a better fit for what you want to achieve.

  8. Interesting article. I will say I've never been that impressed with Lombardi, did a pretty bad job in Cleveland and I think he writes this kind of stuff just to keep his name out there as some sort of expert. But the underlying theme of a scout vs.GM is intriguing.

Much is being made of the Pegulas giving too much power to a new HC. But there's a couple things to consider. One is that the model works in places like Atlanta and Seattle. Whether McD is that caliber of HC remains an open question of course. But second, while I used to think you need to get the GM and have him pick his HC, that model may be antiquated. What is the most important thing is to have a GM and HC in complete synchrony over what kind of team to have and how to put that together. In that regard, McD will be sure to have a GM come n that he has that synchrony with, that he completely trusts with personnel, scouting, cap issues, etc. And regardless him coming first vs. the GM, that is what you need for sustained success.

  9. You make solid points and trust me, I want for you to be right. But it does seem like the Pegulas don't know how to run a NFL team. They basically Gave no power to their GM. They hire a guy as a first time coach, who was a D.C. For a defensive coach.

SM seems like a really smart guy. But this seems like the exact opposite way to build a team. Is our puppet GM going to have control over the roster? Can he fire the coach?

I don't disagree with you. But the one time he was a GM, he literally had one of the drafts you could imagine.

The majority of HCs in the league were coordinators before taking their HC spot.

  10.

Lombardi sets up a straw man. Would your rather have your team built by a scout or a team builder?

But what evidence do we have that Sean McDermott has a great vision for building the Bills? None. He was a defensive coordinator running a bland scheme in Carolina. Pegulas bet the farm on a guy BEFORE they even formally interviewed him or asked him football questions!

You have absolutely no idea this is valid. Posts like this should not be allowed.

  11.

Yes and no. You are correct that what other teams do doesn't force a decision to the Bills specifically. But the data illustrates that very few players who don't get the 5th year option remain with their original team.

Ultimately, it depends on the real reason the Bills are doing this. If this is caution over an injury that they are not certain of, that does not bode well.

If this is just bravado and Sean McDermott "making a statement" then perhaps this is much concern over nothing.

We do know he has an injury and has not been cleared to pratice yet. And I think we all know that your latter scenario has no basis in fact and is your attempt to spew more negativity.

  12. Montana couldn't play in bad weather.

I think every QB who has ever played would love to play in this era and would rack up ridiculous numbers. It's impossible to compare across eras because the game changes so dramatically.

Mark Twain once said the worst winter he ever experienced was a summer in San Francisco. I thinkMontana did just find in thewind whipping in off the Bay..

Are some of you guys kidding? Winning is great, but it is not always the most important thing.

I'd rather root for a team led by Jim Kelly every time! I would hate rooting for that whiner Brady. No question Brady has a ton of mental toughness,

but he wouldn't have lasted one season back in the day with the way QBs got plastered back then. Kelly was tough as nails both mentally and physically

and I think his game was more fun/interesting to watch than Brady's.

And as crazy as it may sound, I'd take those 4 SB losses over 4 SB wins with Brady any day because of everything else it meant. The comradeship and family atmosphere of that team, the perseverance and resiliency (great life lessons for us all). It was special to root for that team. The players, the cities (I include Rochester in that), the coaches, heck even the media, we all bonded together. As fans you felt like those guys were part of your family. (I hope some of you younger fans get to eventually experience that.) And Jim was a huge part of that happening. The team parties at his house after each game, etc., etc. I don't think New England has anything like that despite multiple SB wins and a lot of that has to do with the personalities of the Hoodie and Tom (as opposed to Marv and Jim)---and of course Boston fans compared to Buffalo fans.

So, no question, I'm taking Kelly over Brady every time!

I admire your loyalty. But Brady won championships.

  13.

That's fine, OMF, problem is, every team thinks they're scouting the heck out of their pick, and yet busts happen.

There is too much uncertainty in the whole draft evaluation process to wash it out by scouting.

The 'other plan' is essentially what we did with Tyrod Taylor.

I agree with you too much reaching, but it's I think the inevitable result of supply/demand. More demand for promising QB than there is supply, especially college QB who play in a pro-style offense and make reads.

Finding a great QB is one of the hardest things to do in sports. It's why there's only around 30 modern era QBs in the Hall.

  14. That's the only thing that would make sense. That the recovery is not going as hoped or expected. But everything reported so far by everyone, even as late as yesterday, has been he's right on schedule and will be ready for camp.

Hopefully he stays on track. If I were OBD and he lights up training camp I either extend him a year for the 13 nil or do a new multiyear deal.

Wanting to be sure he's OK is not a bad thing.
