  1. Let's not pretend that Toronto's approach was a one year plan. They've been in rebuild practically since the 2006 lockout. This will be only the second time they've made the playoffs during that time. There's been a couple different resets during that time, but they've definitely been acquiring this current group of players for several years now. The main difference between their tank and Buffalo's is that it came at the end of their retooling. Ours was the start.

Agreed. I've been saying this for a while now. People like to say that this is only Toronto's 2nd (or 3rd) year rebuilding, and I just don't see it that way at all.

Look at all the players they have from previous rebuilds - Rielly, Kadri, Bozak, Gardiner, JVR, Connor Brown. Those are all guys that are big contributors to the Leafs current success, and all of them have been with the Leafs longer than a couple/few years. Kadri was drafted in 2009... The Leafs just didn't tear it down the same way the Sabres did. Sabres went scorched earth, total rebuild. The

Leafs current rebuild is more of a re-tool of previous rebuilds. They kept a lot of talent from previous teams. Buffalo didn't do that.

The other MAJOR difference is coaching (and probably management IMO). Babcock blows Bylsma out of the water. It's not even close IMO. And Shanahan is proving to be a top, top end NHL exec. I am very impressed with him. He's done a fantastic job in Toronto. The book is still, out on Tim Murray, but I think he may have screwed up by trying to speed hints up so much and trading away so many assets. Thinking about what could have been from just that 2015 draft alone really bugs me some days.

Toronto definitely went flying by us in their rebuild. But I also think maybe people thought Toronto was going to continue tearing down the team this year. I kept reading how JVR, Bozak and more would be traded away. But they kept them instead and they've been contributing more than anyone thought.

Their rookies have been very surprising as well. Auston Matthews is about to hit 40 goals! Who would have ever thought that?! Man that's nuts! Marner and Nylander have also been fantastic. Nobody thought they'd come in and contribute so much.

I get it. It's hard not to be jealous of Toronto. I know I am at times. They still have some nice talent in the pipeline too, and their rookies look miles ahead of some of ours. But I am willing to be patient with the Sabres. Our rebuild was just different than theirs, and their coaching is far superior.

I do like what Toronto is doing though. They are drafting for speed and skill. Talent is their #1 priority. Buffalo is drafting for size and toughness, along with speed and skill. I feel like Tim Murray is building a team more in the Western conference mold and Toronto is building a team that seems to fit the direction the East is currently going (but NHL trends are constantly changing). We will see which works out better. Ultimately, you have to beat a western conference team to win a Cup. But you have to go through multiple eastern conference teams to get there...

  2. Well this is different than previously reported

    @profootballtalk

How does ESPN justify adding Rex Ryan when it's shedding millions? Per source, he's getting $300,000 per year. Buffalo pays another $5.2M.

    @profootballtalk

I hope I'm wrong, but I think TV Rex Ryan will be not nearly as entertaining as Head Coach Rex Ryan.

    Not surprising.

I bet he will get a huge raise in a few years when the Pegula money dries up... (assuming he lasts that long).

  3. I'm really taking a liking to McD and he hasn't even been on the sidelines yet...he is making a hell of an impression so far.

Me too. But he was the guy I wanted from day 1. I've been a fan of his for years now. So I was thrilled when I seen him on the Bills coaching interview list, and even more thrilled when I heard he was the leading candidate.

I think McDermott is exactly what this team needs. I don't expect that everything will be perfect. There will definitely be rookie mistakes, and it'll take some time to reverse this losing Bills culture that's been so ingrained here. But I really think we got the right coach for once. I honestly haven't been this excited about a Bills coach in a very, very long time (I was never on the Rex hype train) and I also really like the coaching staff he's put together (I especially like that he hired 2 of the best line coaches in the NFL IMO (Waufle & Castillo)).

Can't wait to see what this guy can do. I just hope he is given time. The Bills can't keep changing coaches.

  4. No, I'm not nervous. I am actually hopeful, more than anything.

We've seen Brady pick apart the Bills D on many occasions. Brady put up what, like 5 or 600 passing yards(?) in a single game on Rex Ryan's defensive scheme. I figure it can't get all that much worse than that, right...? (knock on wood).

Hopefully McDermott will be able to do better, even if it doesn't happen immediately. I know he will put everything he has into getting it figured out, and I can't ask for much more than that at this point. I also think/hope that he's the type of coach who will learn from his mistakes and adjust. So I'm willing to give him some time to get it figured out.

  5. I'd agree with all of that personally, except for one thing.

He was a very good deep ball thrower. He regressed a lot in that area last year. Which is the real Tyrod, the 2016 model or the 2015? But yeah, I admire his hard work and serious attitude. I like that he negotiated so he could come back to Buffalo rather than hit the open market. I like the guy. But we need a franchise QB. Soon.

The absolute best thing to happen would be if he somehow had his light come on and took a huge leap upwards. Man, I hope that happens, but I don't like the odds at all. And we need someone (as does every team that doesn't already have a franchise guy or one one the making.

I'd be very curious to know what caused his accuracy issues in 2016. He was so good with his deep ball in 2015, and he was pretty damn accurate on the short/mid throws too.

Then in 2016 he seemed to struggle with his accuracy in general. He wasn't terrible or anything, but he did struggle at times and there was definitely a noticeable difference in his accuracy from 2015 to 2016.

Was 2015 just an anomaly and 2016 the real Tyrod? Or did something happen? Like David Lee messing with his mechanics/footwork/throwing motion (etc) too much for example. Or was it as simple as not getting to play in preseason (doubt it) and/or all the injuries to his receiving corps? Maybe it was something else completely, or a combination of things. I don't know.

This year should hopefully give us all some answers. It'll be everyone's first year in the system, so I expect some hiccups. But I think this season will give us a better idea of whether or not Tyrod has any type of future with his team. I'm not ready to give up on him yet, as he still is the best the Bills have had in quite a long time. But I also don't really expect him to be any type of long term solution either. I'd be very happy if he somehow turned out to be a franchise type guy. But I think the odds are pretty slim on that. I haven't completely ruled it out though, like some have.

I also agree that the Bills still have to address the QB position either this year or next. I'm not too high on this draft that I'd take any of these QBs at #10, but I think there's some worth taking a shot on in the 2nd or later. But I also won't be mad if McDermott isn't in any rush to draft a QB in the first few rounds (or at all) in his first year as a new HC and wants to get to know his roster/team/coaches (etc) better first.

  6. https://mobile.twitter.com/SabresProspects/status/848569350974058497/video/1

Alex Nylander with an absolutely amazing assist the other night. Check it out.

Also, I heard he is supposed to be getting called up for tomorrow's game against Toronto. I haven't seen it confirmed yet, but that would be nice to get a look at him in the NHL. Pretty cool for Alex to get his first game against his brother's team too (if true).

  7. Bills Nation lost one of their biggest fans...

I'm with you...I lost my Dad yesterday. One of the biggest Bills fans since 1960.

His name was Bill, my grandpa's name was Bill and they were both from Buffalo. They were my Buffalo Bills...Too bad we never saw them win it all together.

    RIP Dad.....

So sorry to hear this. My condolences to you and your family.

  8. as I recall, it was reported that Marrone wanted to make changes to the S&C staff but he didn't have the power over that at the time, it went through the GM.

Yeah I remember hearing something like that too, now that you mention it.

So I did a quick Google search and found this -

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/02/24/report-bills-coaches-want-changes-to-the-training-staff/

    It appears you were right.

  9. I'm not the type that usually likes to see anyone lose their jobs, but I am all for whatever changes McDermott wants to make.

Some of these guys were Ralph Wilson era Bills lifers - Berchtold. McMillen (21 years). Lancaster (16yrs).

We are not in the building. We have no idea how these people play into the culture there. If our coach felt a change is needed, I support it. I am all for getting rid of Ralph Wilson lifers anyway...

Some of these guys have lasted through multiple coaches and general managers. I find it very hard to believe that none of those coaches/GMs wanted to get rid of any of them and/or bring in their own people.

So if we finally have a coach who can help bring some real change to OBD, I am all for it.

  10. sign me and my terminal degree up as a *****. I mean, overpaying for bad products is always a good idea, signed JP Losman and EJ Manual. This is the worst argument ever made about drafting a QB, that you have to take one with a first round pick in any year regardless of the quality of the players. Just horrible. In a supply (quality starting quarterbacks) and demand (about 22 less than needed) imbalance, prices go up but quality does not. You can overpay for all the garbage you want, it's still garbage. Your current need does not guarantee increased supply, and that is the problem with the argument, which is built on one major flawed assumption, that it's just a matter of picking a player high enough and that draft slot alone is the key predictor of success. Just writing that annoys me to no end.

Well said. I agree. There was a small group at BB!B that would constantly argue this, and I'd always say the same thing you are saying.

Reaching for a 1st round QB just to say you took a 1st round QB gets you players like EJ Manuel. That does the Bills no good. Actually, IMO it probably harms them more than it helps them, because then you live or die by that 1st round QB for years, while potentially passing up on actual franchise QBs in the following drafts like what happened with EJ.

I absolutely do not want to reach for another 1st round QB, especially in the top 10. You can not reach for a QB with a top 10 pick. That is just insane IMO. That seems like a great way to get fired to me...

If the Bills are sure that a QB is truly a franchise type guy, then by all means draft him at #10. But if they're not sure or there's too many question marks, then you go BPA and take a shot at a QB in a different round.

  11. Should Jets take a QB in first round, it'll be HUGE. Means more likely they won't pick QB in first round in 2018. But again they got pressing needs in corner, and that's literally a "cornerstone" of their coach's D so this is probably all smoke and mirrors.

    http://nypost.com/2017/03/29/jets-have-private-workout-with-mitchell-trubisky-qb-homework-gets-serious/

I really hope they do draft a QB at #6 this year. I know the Jets seem to draft a QB every year, but even them I can't see spending a high 1st round pick on a QB 2 years in a row. If they actually did use two 1st round picks on a QB in consecutive years (this year and next), they'd be the first team that I'm aware of that's done that. Has any team ever used 2 1st round picks in a row on a QB? (let alone 2 high 1st round picks?).

So Hopefully that'd take them out of the running for one of the top QBs next year, if they do draft one this year...

  12. No. I think they think they misjudged them.

If I recall correctly, last year towards the end of the season there was a rumor that the Jet's front office was entirely unhappy about any of their potential quarterbacks. If that is true, they probably draft one this year. Maybe first maybe not.

Would be okay with me if we traded our 10 pick to them and got their 1 and 2 next year. Then they can draft someone else with their first pick and still take a qb in the first. D Watson perhaps. - Sounds good to me.

I'd do that in a heart beat... But it'd probably have to be their 2nd this year and a 1st next year. I don't see any way Whaley doesn't get a pick back for this draft.

I think the Jets will be picking top 3 next year though. That'd set the Bills up perfectly to draft a top QB in 2018.

I don't see the Jets actually doing this. I'm sure they know they will likely suck this year. If they really want a QB, they will just take him at #6 IMO.

  13. I don't give a damn what Terry and Kim say. I guess some of you still believe the media and in Santa and the easter bunny. Buffalo aka WNY, can NOT afford a new stadium, sorry no. Fans in WNY can't afford PSL's and jacked up ticket prices, parking prices etc.

Now all of a sudden the NFL dude says its right for the Pegulas to back off working on a new stadium for awhile? Sorry folks am an old realist and right now, in light of THREE Teams moving, I say the plan is to move to Toronto.

The NFL wants a team there badly, they can support the new stadium, will pay to get the Bills there and it makes the NFL more money. If you buy this Bull crap of "oh they have the greatest fans, they have history there blah blah blah" I don't know what to tell you.

The NFL does not give one S#@! about us the fans, they don't care about the history of Buffalo. They care about money, and if they get a new stadium in a big new market by moving the Bills, the Bills are gonna move no matter what the Pegulas say publicly.

No go ahead and rant and whatnot on this thread, it won't matter in the long run if you do or don't. I am just looking at a financial reality with the NFL, and the WNY market.

Where do you get that from? What makes you think the NFL badly wants a team in Toronto?

It was Russ Brandon and Ralph Wilson who set up the Toronto series, not the NFL. And the NFL had zero problem with the Bills abandoning that series. Even when the Bills played there, it wasn't very successful.

I don't see the NFL making any other teams play in Toronto, like they do London and possibly Mexico City. I don't even hear any rumors of games being played in Toronto.

So I guess I just don't get why you say "the NFL wants a team there badly".

If you have some proof I am overlooking, feel free to share it!

Also, you may not care what the Pegula's say, but look at what they are doing - how much the Pegula's have invested in the city of Buffalo. They spent millions upon millions building the HarborCenter and restaurants and a hotel. They just bought another multi million dollar building down there. They bought land around New Era Field and are building a new practice facility there. They've sunk millions into New Era Field already too.

The Pegula's have said how they didn't just buy sports teams, they also invested in Buffalo and want to help its resurgence, and they've backed that up with actions.

  14. 1996-2016

    Cardale Jones, Rd 4 2016

    EJ Manuel, Rd 1 2013

    Levi Brown, Rd 7 2010

    Trent Edwards, Rd 3 2007

    JP Losman, Rd 1 2001

How pathetic, if you don't try you will never find a QB.

Only 2 in the first round.

That's crazy... Definitely not enough focus put on the QB position.

But, just looking at the last few years with our current GM - 2 of these drafted since Whaley took over.

2 in 4 years seems about average, no? What's the average around the NFL for a GM? I doubt it's realistic to draft one ever year. Teams seem to like giving their drafted QBs a chance before drafting another (except for the Jets maybe).

  15. How much would it actually raise taxes? A few $ per person? Or are we talking $100's? My guess would be it's closer to a few dollars per person. Maybe $20 a year at most. I doubt Pegula will be overly greedy about it IMO.

If that's the case, we can afford that.

Reality is that eventually Buffalo will have to build a new stadium if we want the Bills here long term. NFL owners have zero problem moving a team.

Look at the Oakland vote today. 31 for (including Pegula, again). 1 against (Miami). 2 teams moved recently because of stadiums - San Diego, Oakland. Had nothing to do with fan support. The fans always showed up. Even St. Louis was partially moved because of the stadium. There was obviously more to it in St. Louis though.

But chances are we either help the team build a new stadium or eventually lose our beloved Bills. As much as it may be BS that we have to help these rich NFL a holes, it's probably the reality of the situation. If we want the luxury of having an NFL team, we will likely have to help build a new stadium.

  16. I'm glad to hear he might get a second chance. It'd be great for him to learn from Payton and Brees.

But I'd be worried for the kid's sobriety if he were living in New Orleans. Part of being and staying sober is "people, places, things". You really need to avoid temptation, especially for the first couple of years sober, and NO is a big drinking and drug town. They have a huge drinking scene and a huge drug scene. It's very hard for a newly sober person to avoid that much temptation. Hopefully the team has a plan for him if he does sign there. He would absolutely have to keep his head down and stay the **** away from that whole scene. Maybe even having some type of team chaperone might not be a bad idea...

Wish him the best though. Just not sure NO is the best place for him. But it may be the only place willing to give him a chance, so...

  17. Whaley literally cannot afford to not take one if available at 10. If he passes on Watson or Mahomes and they turn out good... It's over for him as it should be

I agree with that statement totally

I completely disagree. When has a GM ever been fired for passing on a QB in the 1st round that is seen as a project/gamble?

It's not like any of these QBs are seen as sure things. Every one is seen as a project. GM's pass on project QBs every year, some that end up being good, and I have never heard of one of those GMs getting fired for it. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.

On the other hand, how many times has a GM been fired for whiffing on a 1st round QB pick?

IMO I feel like it's almost a guarantee that if Whaley whiffs on (another) 1st round QB he will lose his job. I don't know how many GMs are given more than 2 opportunities to draft a 1st round QB, but I bet the list is extremely small (if there's even a list at all).

Whaley himself said he expected to be fired if EJ Manuel didn't pan out... It's on video.

GM's usually don't expect to survive missing on a 1st round QB. Especially a top 10 draft pick. If he misses on a top 10 picked QB, how can Pegula Not fire him?

  18. If you don't have HBO, do yourself a favor and borrow or steal someone's HBO Go login and go watch The Wire. It might be a tad outdated with the pagers and old flip phones, but it doesn't matter. It's an incredible journey through various aspects of crime/police/politics/school in Baltimore with some of the best characters in television.

The pagers were outdated even when the show was on air. That was part of the plot - Drug dealers being disciplined enough to still use pagers and pay phones.

And as for the flip phones, I actually just upgraded from my flip phone a few monyhs ago, so I resent that flip phone comment! lol j/k I know they're outdated. but I really did just upgrade cause my flip phone finally took a crap on me. It was going to be th same price to get a new flip phone as it was for a smart phone, so I finally got one, but I avoided those smart phones as long as I could...

Did you ever watch the HBO mini series "The Corner"? It's set in Baltimore and was written by one of the guys who helped with The Wire. Well worth watching. I think you can find it on YouTube.
