They have more at WR than people think.

We have like 5 guys that could be solid backups on any other team, the problem is Kelvin Benjamin is our only WR that would start on any other team.

Right now it looks like Benjamin, Jones, and Kerley are locks. Kerley has been starting in the slot in practice. I think Coleman has to make the team too because no one else has his skill set. Personally I'd give the other 2 spots to McCloud and Streater. More likely Holmes will take one of those spots though.

Remember when EJ Manuel lit it up

No, I don't remember this. Apparently everyone else does. I remember EJ looking mostly competent in preseason. I don't remember him making any wow plays like the two TD passes Allen has thrown. I see a pocket presence that EJ never showed.

I have no interest in cheering for 60 yard out of bounds passes

But you cheer for dropped pick sixes and blown coverages? This is definitely the weirdest set of opinions I've seen this year. The number of times you've brought up Josh Allen's first ever pass in a preseason game is very odd.

.the scouting report so far has been right...he looks great in practice

There were zero scouting reports that mentioned how he looked in practice. What does this even mean? I was as skeptical as anyone about Josh Allen but he looks like a totally different QB right now. His footwork is night and day and he isn't making the stupid mistakes he made in college.

I like McDermott,  but you don't need to be a rocket scientist to come up with a strategy of starting with the 3's, then the 2's, and finally the first team.

    Hue Jackson, rocket scientist.

No one is game planning against him.  He is known to have a hard time with making reads.  He is known to struggle under pressure.

The kid has a great arm...everyone knew it from the beginning.  He can really sling that ball...and there will be some times when that arm overcomes a bad read etc...

Hey dude there's a Mahomes thread somewhere else on this board

AS of right now Peterman with his insane 85% completion rate is winning the battle in my eyes.

The preseason completion percentage leaders are Jameis Winston, Cody Kessler, Colt McCoy, Sam Darnold, Jake Rudock, Ryan Griffin, Chad Kelly, Joshua Dobbs, Cooper Rush, and Jeff Driskel.

Allen made more than Peterman.... and?

This is wrong. And without counting the number of individual mistakes they each had, one of Peterman's was effectively a pick six and one effectively prevented a TD on a blown coverage. I say effectively because he played against future insurance salesmen.

It’s unlikely he would have avoided that hit from Garrett. It was a poor play by both Lee and Dawkins.

It's even more unlikely that McCarron would have scored a TD on the play where Murphy whiffed on his block, or that he would have made the throws to get the offense into the red zone in the first place. We don't have to overthink it. Allen will take sacks, same as any other NFL QB, but his arm strength and pocket movement give him a huge advantage.

I see a lot of people here saying, JA needs to play with the 1’s. If he were out there behind that oline he would have gotten killed too...

I have a different perspective. I think that if McCarron was the 2nd team QB they wouldn't have had 3 scoring drives. Certainly no TDs. Allen makes the offensive line look better.

JMO but I have concerns about JA starting at this time in the regular season. I have a hard time believing that he has cleaned up the problems that were so evident in his college tape in the few months since he was drafted. It took AR three years to work out the kinks in his game - and they were fewer and less serious than Allen's. More recently a more accurate passer (under the tutelage of Andy Reid no less), P. Mahomes, was given a year to straighten out his footwork.

I would have said exactly this one month ago. But he is way ahead of where I thought he would be based on how he played at Wyoming. His footwork is so much more consistent than it was in college. On the TD to Streater he did everything exactly right, like a savvy veteran. He doesn't make a lot of mistakes and the few he makes don't kill the team (unlike Peterman mistakes which usually turn the ball over).

I wasn't a fan of Allen before we drafted him, but one of the things that helped me like the pick is his background. He hasn't been playing football for most of his life. He played multiple sports in high school and never received any real professional QB coaching. He looked better at the Senior Bowl after working with Palmer, and seemingly has worked out a lot of his flaws in the few months since. He's ready. Not saying he'll be flawless as a rookie, but he's good enough to take his lumps on the field and improve with experience.

people try to make statistics mean more than they actually mean. if it were only for football that would be good. fact is, stats are used incorrectly in much more important areas of life...there is a lot of terrible medical research done by doctors who think they know something about the scientific method.

once again: statistics say very little about the future of a specific player. PFF makes me laugh, it is impossible to take them seriously.

This is so true. As an example the Football Outsiders guys laugh at Josh Allen's chances to become a franchise QB, but their own QBASE statistic gave him a 37.3% chance of being at least an adequate starter.

    https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2018/qbase-2018

They supposedly are a statistics based website, but they laugh at someone with over a 1 in 3 chance of becoming an NFL starter. Anyone who knows probability knows that 37.3% is not that low.

So they knew a full year in advance that Allen would be a good player, and be available to them at their pick, so they could throw away what was in their lap? Complete nonsense.

They knew Allen and Darnold were top prospects before the 2017 season started. They probably thought they would have a pretty high pick in 2018. It is not far fetched that their plan was to try and get one of them in a QB class that everyone knew would be loaded. Front offices plan ahead 2 or 3 years.

No way do you throw Allen in there behind that OL.

I think people overstate this argument. First of all there are very very few good offensive lines in the NFL. If we're waiting for a great offensive line before we start Allen, we'll be waiting years. More importantly the 2nd team offensive line wasn't any better. It LOOKED better because Allen is so quick with the ball and he's athletic. He can make throws under pressure that McCarron doesn't have a prayer of completing. And he can escape the pocket a lot better than McCarron and Peterman. Put him with the 1s and suddenly the offensive line will look decent. Like the TD he threw, that was poor pass protection. If McCarron is in on that play he would take that sack and you would be saying "can we trust Allen with the 2nd team o-line?"

Allen is superior to Peterman.  There is no doubt.  That’s being said, the Ravens, Chargers and Vikings are games 1-3. Does Josh Allen survive vs those 3 defenses with this OL?  Bad things man.

THIS is the case for Peterman. He's a punching bag for the first few games against tough defenses. There is no case for Peterman that involves his talent level.

He might not have a cannon, but there is more to winning football games than just deep WR routes.

When will this myth die? There is a lot more to arm strength than throwing the ball deep. A good example is the pick six Peterman threw that the defender dropped. If Allen throws that ball it is a completion. Peterman can't throw those short outside hitches, Allen can hit then easily.
