  1. It wasn't a great performance but QBs practically never look good in their first games as rookies. Watson in game 1 came in the 2nd half and had a 60.4 passer rating. Game 2 he was 75.9. Game 3 he was 90.6. Pat Mahomes got his first start in the last game of his rookie season against a bad Denver defense with nothing to play for and had a passer rating of 76.4. All I want to see from Allen is steady progress.

  2. Mahomes has been very impressive with his pre and post snap reads. He throws to a lot of wide open receivers but part of that is him diagnosing the defense. It isn't like Watson last year who literally was just throwing jump balls to Hopkins and Fuller and converting through pure luck. Unlike Watson last year I don't have anything bad to say about Mahomes's success so far. I mean he isn't going to throw 6 TDs each week but he's shown a lot.

It reinforces my belief that QBs are better off sitting on the bench for a year and I am back to worrying that Allen shouldn't be starting right now.

I waited until I could watch this video to give my opinion because being at the game it was hard to see where every ball was located, and the video reinforces what I felt in person, that Allen was bad. Allen is missing RBs on wheel routes or in the flat by three feet, and underthrowing deep balls despite the big arm. I fully understand the context of being in his first start, and I'll give him credit for being poised, but this is exactly what Allen was in Wyoming...inaccurate, with no touch.

I hope he improves and look forward to seeing if he can fix his accuracy, but as we have seen in the past, fixing inaccuracy is a tall order.

I rewatched it and accuracy isn't my main concern. I only counted 3 passes that were too inaccurate by NFL standards - the miss to Murphy, the 2nd interception, and the Dimarco catch. I'm much more concerned about his pre-snap and post-snap recognition. He is slow to read the field IMO. That will hopefully improve with time. Like on the deep completion to Zay he was open long before Allen threw him the ball. The pass protection wasn't that bad in this game - I would only put 2 or 3 sacks on the OL. He held the ball a little too long and sometimes stares down his reads. He needs to recognize blitzes better too. Not trying to nitpick, that's just what I saw in his first ever start.

I don't know if McBeane are the guys to build a winner, but the Bills have their qb.

Unfortunately we won't really know until next season. I do think McDermott is a good coach in the sense that he makes good halftime adjustments. You saw that more than a few times last year and again this past Sunday. I am not sold on his game planning in general just yet. But this season we have over $50 million in dead cap so it's just hard to say. They've set themselves up beautifully for next year with $80 million in cap space and 10 draft picks, 3 of which should be quite high. They have to deliver though.

At this point it looks like a throwaway season. It's going to be hard to create a winning environment for Josh Allen like this. A QB's confidence is a fragile thing. We need to become the kind of organization he will want to stay with at the end of his rookie contract.

I don't think Allen is like that at all. Hes already been through the ringer at Wyoming. Some people are mentally fragile but not all, it's probably a genetic thing. You don't shrug off sacks from Terrell Suggs and Melvin Ingram without some kind of mental toughness. I don't know why I just have a hunch Allen will improve with each mistake. He just has the right make up.

previously i was critical of Josh's second interception. after watching all the throws, i may be off in that estimation. while his footwork was not perfect, it may have been more of a miscommunication with the receiver. you can see Josh throws it where had the receiver broke out instead of up, he would have probably hit the receiver.

Josh owned the 2nd pick at his presser. Said it was just a bad ball. That one and the miss to Murphy in the flat were the most frustrating. Those are the throws he will need to make consistently to succeed in this league.

Allen caused a couple of those sacks himself, not that I expect him to be a savvy veteran at this point. I'm not saying it's great blocking, we clearly need to upgrade every position to the right of Dawkins. But it is sufficient enough to let Allen develop and evaluate him. The much bigger concern IMO is the receiving corps. Allen needs receivers that can win contested catches and I'm not sure we have a single one.

Just to underscore what I'm saying here this tweet from Mike Rodak is interesting:

I take that to mean QB mistakes and coverage sacks.

Not good enough for the Bills according to some of our fans, but he'll go to New England and now we'll fail to cover him for 2 games this year.

You could have copied and pasted this from a thread about Corey Coleman or Brandon Reilly and it wouldn't surprise me if you actually did.

I said it would take a 5th to get the trade done. What did it take again??

Did anyone argue with you? I'm surprised in the opposite direction. I would have thought a 6th rounder would get it done.

They also traded a third (Cleveland's) to move up to draft Edmunds.  So to move up in the first to draft Allen and Edmunds, it cost them both seconds and and the first pick in the third.

If they drafted their QB in '17 at #10, with every other trade being the same (Watkins, Darby, Taylor), they would have have ended up with 1 first round pick, 2 second round picks and 2 third round picks in '18.

If they still traded up to get Edmunds, it still costs them the first pick in the 3rd round, but they still have the 2 second round picks.

Not saying that either Allen or Edmunds aren't worth it, what I am pointing out is that the Bills paid a heavy price for them.

There are a lot of holes in the current roster that those traded picks could have filled.

    In essence we used:

    2 1st round picks

    1 2nd round pick

    Sammy Watkins

    Ronald Darby

    In exchange for:

    Tre'Davious White

    Josh Allen

    Tremaine Edmunds

We only used 3 of our original draft picks to get those 3 talents on the team. Watkins and Darby weren't going to be part of the long term plan either way. This entire plan will depend on Allen being good. If he's a top 10 QB within 2 years no one will ever say the Bills paid too much for him regardless of any other QB we passed on.

This regime has very aggressively placed their future in the hands of a potential franchise QB and I don't understand how anyone can be disappointed about that at this point.

When you have huge immediate needs on the OL, you can use that $7.6 million in dead cap space to sign a better FA than Russell Bodine or Marshall Newhouse.  They could have tried to sign Mike Pouncey, former Pro Bowl center, for $5 million.   Too.Stupid.To.Be.True.

But then we wouldn't have been able to get Edmunds which would have left a hole at MLB. You're playing whack a mole. They were never going to fill every spot in one offseason once 2 starters on the line retired. They're rebuilding. They didn't want to spend too much money in free agency. Next year they can afford a couple impact players.

  11. 2 hours ago, Perry Turtle said:

Both of these guys fell to the Bills in the '17 draft. McDermott, for some reason, decided to delay selecting a QB, and it cost the team several more assets to draft Allen, which could have been used to speed the rebuild.

But he also picked up an extra 1st round pick. He didn't just give up assets. You can think of it as we traded 2 2nd round picks to get Tremaine Edmunds and still got our franchise QB and a #1 CB. The only thing that matters is Allen. If he turns out good Beane will be here a long time, if not he'll be gone in 2 years.

some of these younger guys need time to progress. I thought the second half of the charger game we started to see a little life in the team and more of what they wanted for this year. A competitive team. Low on talent but hard working

Right. I can root for the 2nd half team even if we lose a lot of games. That team gives me hope for the future. The team that showed up against the Ravens and the 1st half yesterday was bad enough to make you question the whole staff. McDermott needs to retain play calling responsibilities moving forward. If he does that and Allen shows progress we can all enjoy this year for what it is.

If not then why pass on Mahomes and Watson.  Those two will always be tied to A McD decision

If you've watched Watson this year you would know he wouldn't add anything to our team. We won't regret passing on him. Mahomes we might want to wait a few more games at least. He's in a great position, similar to what Watson had last year. Although I will say his lack of turnovers has surprised me and his long term prospects are better than I had Watson last year. If Allen turns out to be good it won't matter though. This regime goes as he goes. If he busts we will be really terrible for a couple years until the next HC and GM are brought in to try again.

after the 3rd TD the Chargers went into Prevent Laughing Garbagetime easy road win mode

Still it was nice the BIlls had some fight in them for the second half

When Ivory scored a TD to put us within 2 scores 4 minutes into the 3rd quarter, and the Chargers next drive was a 3 and out, they were not laughing or thinking of playing prevent defense.

He’s never going to be the “quick throw” guy. That’s Peterman. Allen is going to play like Ben or Stafford. He’s going to hang as long as he can and try to push the ball down the field. He’s never going to be the 90% completion guy. He’s going to make big plays.

He has to be able to do both. Big plays aren't going to open up on blitzes. He has to learn to find the safe read and throw them the ball before the pressure gets there. If he's doing that more as the season goes on that will show progress. Teams will blitz him like crazy until he shows he can beat it.

Where has anyone (ownership,Bean McDermott) come out and said they expected this or are that it's all part of their "process"?

McDermott says it all the time without directly saying it. After one of the blowouts last year he said at his presser something to the effect of you need to lose before you can win. They are going to try and be competitive but they are not going to sell out to win until next year.

He avoided more than he caused.

That was a seven or eight sack game for most QBs.

That's a fair point. But there were plays where he had time and still didn't throw the ball, because the receivers weren't getting open even with time. It's mind numbing to tune to the Red Zone channel and see a bunch of circus catches all across the league, and in this game I think our most impressive catch was the fullback. Just about every throw in our offense is a tight window throw.

  18. 2 minutes ago, Kelly the Dog said:

I think you're missing the point. We should be better this year if the process was in normal order. Last year should have been the bad year and next year should be year two of the rebuild. Now next year is going to be year one of the rebuild. The "process" is tear down year one, build year two, and go for it year three. We tried to go on the fly year one, tore down year two, and now year three is what year two should have been.

Year one was the evaluation. We didn't start jettisoning the last regime's players until the offseason was almost over. Dareus took until mid-season to find someone willing to take his contract. This year we lost Incognito and Wood through no fault of our own, and we replaced our starting but mediocre QB and MLB with raw rookies. Most rebuilding regimes take their QB in year one but our regime showed up late. Firing Whaley was a last minute decision. Everything was delayed an extra year but it worked out because we have a ton of dead cap off the books at the end of this season.
