That's not the point. It's not fair to them. And if either of them thought that was the case they would demand to be traded (Shady) or retire immediately (Kyle)

The Browns went 0-16 last year. Did anyone of note request a trade when they started Deshone Kizer for most of the year? How about the Colts when they started Curtis Painter for 16 games in a deliberate effort to get Andrew Luck? Kyle Williams has been with some truly terrible teams in his career. Sorry if it isn't fair. I'm sure Shady didn't think it was fair that his team won the Super Bowl two years after he got traded. That's life in the NFL. You don't always choose where you go

You don't convince Kyle to come back and waste one of Shady's last prime years if you're tanking.

Harrison Phillips will learn a lot from Kyle. He and Shady are leaders. They've been around a long time. McDermott values that a ton. Tanking doesn't mean you have to field a team of replacement players only. And honestly if both Kyle and Shady got season ending injuries our final record wouldn't be any different. Their being on the team has no impact on our draft position.

If I HAD to bet I would say Nate starts because McD is stubborn. I don't even think NP should be in the league.

It won't be because he's stubborn. It's because he knows what this season is. I suspect if you could get an honest answer from McDermott he'd tell you last year was supposed to be the same way. They didn't trade Watkins and Darby in preseason and Dareus midseason because they were trying to win a lot of games in year 1.

The fans will turn on everyone including McD if they start Peterman and he stinks up the joint again.

It doesn't matter what the fans think. I have a feeling that when McDermott interviewed for the job he told Pegula that he needed 3 years to get the team in shape and the first couple years would be difficult and potentially disappointing to the fans. And Pegula gave him the green light.

I fully expect Peterman to start again next Sunday.

They don't want to ruin Allen around these trash players and they know that as soon as they start him, there's no turning back.

Not saying I agree with it.

It almost certainly won't be Peterman but I could see them signing a veteran who hasn't been signed (like Matt Moore) to take over for a few weeks. McDermott talked to Joe Buscaglia after the game and he said when deciding who the QB will be he has to look at "the people around the QB." Interview here:

That makes me think they know the offense is crap and they might not want to subject Allen to that. If they really want to embrace the tank they will just stick with Peterman. Nothing would surprise me at this point.

In mop up performances you cannot really say with any certainty whatsoever that a QB, any QB, would have been able to do that earlier in the game. It's possible he could but also just as likely or more that he couldn't. It's an unknowable no matter how much you know or don't about football.

What you CAN see however are skills. Josh showed a lot of skills in his less than a half that Nate cannot do and it wasn't just arm strength. And yeah, perhaps he wouldn't have done that same thing against starters but arm strength, accuracy, poise or lack thereof in pocket, awareness, ability to throw on run, looking to second and third options are all skills that can be known in mop up duty whether that exact same performance would have happened against starters or when the game was still close or not.

It's the same as in preseason. You can't pay attention to the stat line but you can watch the individual performances and make judgments. He played a glorified preseason game against 1st stringers and he played very well.

You were all over the gameday thread saying dont put him in until after week 4. Thank you for being man enough to change your position.??

The big thing that changed for me is my opinion of the pass blocking. It looked much better. Not great but serviceable which is mostly all you get in the NFL these days. Allen looked quite good. So I'm at the point where I think he might as well get some experience. We'll still end up with a high draft pick.

But Allen has done nothing to contradict that feeling that we DID screw up...yet. Let’s all hope you’re right, for our collective sanity’s sake.

People said the same thing about Watson, that we made a mistake not drafting him. But he didn't look good at all today and it's not like the Patriots defense is elite. It's going to take a lot more than one game for Mahomes to prove anything. I mean I get it, he's making good reads and getting the ball to his playmakers. That's all you can do as a QB. But he hasn't done anything to make me think he could play with our roster and be successful. Every one of his completions have been routine throws. One thing I'll give him credit for is no interceptions. I expected some turnovers.

Cheetah has me 30 fantasy points ?

He's an outstanding receiver. He is definitely top 10 and if he keeps up this kind of performance he'll be top 5 before long. The one TD pass was a standard short pass over the middle and he just put on the burners to take it 50+ yards. Another pass Mahomes threw too high in double coverage but Hill jumped up and brought it down with perfect timing for a 30 yard gain. Our receivers can't even catch a ball that hits them in the numbers.

He didn’t sign Poyer and Hyde.  He has signed ZERO free agents of quality in two offseasons.  His plans at G, WR and CB have crashed and burned.

Beane and McDermott are tied at the hip. I don't separate their decisions at all. Everything we did last offseason belongs to them, good or bad. The weak point I agree is WR. Benjamin isn't good enough to be a #1 receiver. They have to address that next year. I don't blame him for the offensive line. We lost 2 starters to retirement and no one in the NFL is able to find quality players.

This team is on the same trajectory as the Sabres, using the same logic that they used about cleaning house and rebuilding. See how that worked out for them?

Really, so using 1st round picks on Reinhart and Lehner is the same as the players Beane has drafted? And Murray didn't blow up the salary cap, he filled it with underperforming players. The proper comparison to Murray is Whaley. I'm not a huge Sabres fan but even I understand that.

Sammy was 3 first round picks, so it was 5.

Oh man my favorite argument of all time... I also just remembered we got an extra 1st round pick and still got White. So we used 2 drafts worth of 1st rounders on 3 franchise players. Whaley used 4 and got nothing. I can't believe he still has his fans around here.

Beane will be fired after the 2019 season but probably not sooner.

We've nailed our early draft picks so far, albeit it is very early. White, Dawkins, Allen, Edmunds, and Phillips look like franchise players at this point. Again it is still early but our only outright bust so far is Zay Jones. We did all this while trading down for another 1st round pick. Free agency hasn't been as consistent but Poyer and Hyde were home runs, Marcus Murphy looks good, and I don't know why everyone is complaining about Lotulelei because our run defense looked much improved today.

I really don't know what people expected this year. All our holes filled with experienced players in 2 offseasons?? When is the last time we had consecutive good drafts?

  13. 3 minutes ago, vincec said:

    ?

Yeah, Beane's doing great. By next season after they dump McCoy and clay they won't even be able to beat the top college team.

Whaley left them with a huge mess. It's taking them 2 seasons just to clean it up, and next they have to restock the shelves. Anyone who thought this team was close was kidding themselves. We had very little talent and a salary cap filled with underperforming players. So far it looks like we have a franchise CB, QB, LT, and MLB. We didn't have a single franchise player when they took over other than Kyle Williams on his last legs. This year we lost Wood and Incognito to retirement. What did you honestly expect?

Anyone miss Whaley yet? Or are we good with the personnel direction of the team.

    4 1st round picks on:

    EJ Manuel

    Sammy Watkins

    Shaq Lawson

    vs

    3 1st round picks on:

    Tre'Davious White

    Josh Allen

    Tremaine Edmunds

Nope I don't miss Whaley at all. There is a reason he doesn't even work for an NFL front office anymore.
