It wasn't just McKenzie. Daboll didn't use any trick plays or gadgets plays in the playoffs. We ran a bunch of them to great success in the regular season so I don't know what changed. The statue of liberty would have been a good one to call close to the goal line against KC at the end of the 1st half. Instead we ran that play while up multiple scores against the Broncos. Daboll has a habit of calling games scared when it really matters. I think that's why our offense looked so tight for much of the playoffs. It's like he gets worried that teams will be prepared for the gadget plays so he doesn't bother trying them.

Keeping Poyer and Hyde locked up for the next couple years is really important. On their own neither of them are elite but together they make one of the best safety tandems in the league.

Then why hold onto a guy who's 34 pm the opposite side and not as effective a player....
Well I'm assuming both would be cut if Hughes is cut. If it's a matter of holding onto one of then, Hughes is a no brainer since he's a year younger and slightly smaller cap hit. But if we want to sign a difference maker at the position Hughes could end up being a casualty of that.

If Jerry gets cut or traded, be on the lookout for a splashy move at DE. No way you get rid of your best pass rusher when thats the teams biggest weakness
Yep if we do cut him it's because they have an upgrade planned. I expect us to make one relatively big free agency move for a pass rusher. Cutting Hughes would be one avenue to making sure we can afford it. And I'm not gonna complain if Beane has finally realized 32 year old edge rushers aren't sufficient.

That was nice but how many long balls (40 + yards) did Allen complete last year?
Throwing a deep ball doesn't require elite arm strength. It's the tight windows where that makes a difference. I can't believe there are still any Bills fans that don't understand that by now.

He's left footed which is unusual for a punter. It seemed to cause a number of misfields from returners.
Bojorquez is also left footed.

The nice thing about all the players being cut this offseason is we could conceivably fill our needs in free agency without going against the comp pick formua. Assuming Milano and a couple other free Bills free agents get re-signed elsewhere, maybe Williams too, this should be the first offseason in a while that we actually earn comp picks.

My weird idea for overtime is you're not allowed to punt. First team to score wins. But you can't kick a field goal until your 3rd possession. So now the playing field is a bit more even because even if you get the ball first there's a risk you'll give the ball to the other team on a short field.

The NFL Players Association signed a very generous contract, making the salary cap dependent on revenue around the league. If the owners are taking a hit from the lack of attendance, then the players take a hit too. End of story.
I completely disagree. The NFL isn't a profit sharing organization. The owners make the profit and the players are their employees. The coaches and executives and other employees won't be impacted, just the players. More to the point if teams have to release quality players it means the product will be worse and there will be a bunch of 1-year deals which will hinder long term development. It isn't a good look for the NFL no matter how you cut it.

Crazy that the NFL allowed this to happen. Some of the richest people in the world cant handle a single year with no attendance without cutting the salary cap. And now the product will suffer because of it.

I am petrified he is going to show up out of shape and 400 pounds
I've seen this sentiment a few times but Star is known as a first in, last out kind of guy at the workout room. It's one of the reasons the Bills signed him. The notion that he is lazy or out of shape is a total myth and I don't know where it started.

Beane should be very interested in this trade. Cut Butler, trade for Brown. Save cap and get better. Probably a. Late round pick gets it done.
If Star comes back, do we need another NT? I'm fine with Star and Zimmer and Phillips at that position next year. I'd rather not trade for someone in the last year of his deal, even a late round pick. JMO

FWIW Dolphins fans are surprised and unhappy with him being cut. He could play the Lorenzo Alexander role, or I could see him and Klein plus a rookie splitting duty as the Will. He's a versatile LB.

Sounds like someone that could use 2 games a year to exact his revenge.

he’ll be back in NEMaybe. Seems pretty rare that players go back to the team they left in the first place but it's certainly possible since they have a ton of cap space.

I would be VERY interested in Van Noy if this comes to pass. In fact I'll be surprised if we don't sign him. Fills a need and fits everything McDermott looks for with character and leadership and versatility.

They were a serious option ... regardless of the money
The Athletic article directly contradicts that:
QuoteBy last week, Watt had offers in the neighborhood of $20 million guaranteed. The Bills didn’t offer that much and weren’t compelled to do so when they weren’t the highest offer. Those offers helped Watt get an even better contract from the Cardinals that is reportedly worth $23 million guaranteed and $31 million total over two years. That was a price the Bills weren’t going to to touch.
Sounds like there were multiple teams that guaranteed $20 million and the Bills weren't one of them. Doesn't seem like Matthew Fairburn is just speculating. I think this information comes directly from the Bills.

According to this the Bills weren't even in the ballpark of the highest offer. So they were never a serious option to get him, turns out he was just chasing the money.

Call the Cardinals. See if JJ Watt is available.

If the Bills were 2nd in the running that means Beane made a serious offer. So even though this didn't work out I'm positive we'll sign an upper tier pass rusher this offseason. Like how after trying to trade for Antonio Brown he turned around and traded for Diggs. The best Bills pass rusher of 2021 is not on the team yet IMO.

I wonder that too, but from everything I’ve seen it looks like we’re down within the 2-3 million range of varience. At very least it seems sure to be between 180-185. I would think teams could use that as a baseline at least to act, if they were so wanting to.
Yeah but there's no reason for teams to rush into it. It makes no difference if he signs now or he signs one day before free agency. For teams like us and the Packers and the Titans a $2 million difference is meaningful.
Unless I've missed something I haven't seen any team re-sign a player or pick up a 5th year option yet. The only moves I've seen so far are teams releasing players. That tells me teams are being extra cautious right now and no new player contracts will be inked until the NFL finalizes the cap number. Once that happens I bet Watt is signed somewhere within a couple days.

I have to admit I'm getting lukewarm about Watt. I used to be excited about him coming to Buffalo, but if Buffalo isn't his clear choice, and it seems it isn't, then I'm less interested.
Beane is, so far as I can tell, very clear about how much he's willing to play. Beane doesn't spend a lot of time negotiating the money. If Buffalo were Watt's #1 choice, then he would either have taken Beane's best offer or crossed Buffalo off the list.
I just don't think any team will sign him until the final salary cap number is decided. A team like the Jaguars can offer him whatever they want to right now, but the contending teams all have a tight budget and they can't structure the deal without knowing what they're working with. Supposedly the NFL is waiting until their new TV contracts are negotiated and signed before finalizing the salary cap. Disney was the first domino to fall so hopefully we're close to finding out for sure.
But even if we don't sign Watt we know that Beane is making pass rusher a priority in free agency this year. IMO the best Bills edge rusher of 2021 isn't on the team yet. If it isn't Watt, someone else in that 2nd or 3rd tier will be a Bill this season.
