One, my "casual fan" statement is not an insult to people who like him, I myself am also a casual fan of College Football where I won't know every prospect from every school.
Two, its ok to appreciate what Mel does, just like its ok for me to not like him. I have friends who enjoy Stephen A. Smith while myself and plenty others cant stand him. People dont have to take it so personal that others dislike the guy. He is a putz in my book, thats just my opinion.
Three, why does everyone keep talking about the top 10? I mean who cares, everyone gets most of the top 10 right in terms of what players are chosen. Thats NOT a hard thing to do, there is ALWAYS a clear picture of who the most likely first 10 players are going to be. Its not like someone projected to go 25th suddenly gets taken 3rd overall very often unless you are the Raiders drafting.
This "top ten picks" keeps getting bought up as some kind of "validation" of Kiper, yet I beat him last year as a casual fan as I had 9 of the 10 players right. The only person I had in top 10 that didn't go was Minkah and he went 11th, the guy I had not mocked top 10 was McGlitchey even though I had him top 15. So I guess that makes me better than Kiper. So no disrespect, but I could care less if he got 8 out of 10 right, just about everyone did the same thing or better. Kiper also got most the teams wrong in the top 10, I beat him there too decisively...and I am no one special nor am I paid to do this for a living.
Since you're a self proclaimed casual fan .. and you beat Mel head to head .. still waiting to hear the other resources you referenced in your post that you use for your pre draft intel as its obviously good given your draft picking acumen.

Yes he is an entertainer like Skip Bayless or Stephen A. Smith...not a guy with a track record of accuracy. If you find entertainment value in him, great, thats his job. If you look to him for more accurate projections and insight, he's not very good at that compared to others even though he has a god complex about his own opinions like Stephen A. Smith.
And you dont have to tell me the bolded, I proclaim that all the time. GMs are wrong more than they are right...thats because its impossible to accurately predict the future at a high rate of success. However, Kiper is no where near the realm of accuracy of successful GM's, yet he blasts them and blasts them hard when they pick a player Kiper doesn't agree with despite the fact those GM's know a massive amount more than Kiper does about Football, player projections and the players themselves. Kiper has to review the entire college football program...GMs and Scouts spend substantial amounts of more time analyzing specific players they believe will specifically fit into that teams plans, schemes, and philosophy. So they have a lot more insight when they pick a specific player than Kiper.
So once again, the reason Kiper gets so much flack is that he projects this god complex about his opinion over those who are paid a lot of money to know more than him about football, the draft, and the players. He never accepts any accountability for how wrong he is so frequently, never apologizes to any teams he blasted that prove their pick was the right choice over his. He just keeps going like he's never been wrong.
Kipers only value is to help casual fans know some names they wouldnt really know if not for people like him. However, there are more likable and more accurate sources for the same information out there. Just like sports show hosts Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith...they are entertainment value for those who find their schtick entertaining...but if you want more accurate assessments, more grounded opinions (not rooted in click bait antics), and a deeper discussion of sports there are better choices out there than those two buffoons.
In today's ESPN quick hit society ... please share your other sources for us "casual fans" who actually appreciate Mel and what he does. You say above he is not a guy with a track record of accuracy. He hit 8 of the top 10 picks last year (granted not by right team) .. the drop outs were Rosen and Edmunds. You may not like his personality, but you have to respect the niche he created.

Well, he got ONE out of 32 correct (saquon to the Gmen)
Interesting that he had Josh going first to the Browns and Tremaine going to daBears at 8.
I posted this because I forgot how ridiculously off the mark every mock is, every year without fail. I think the only time I ever guessed right on the Bills was Dareus, and a lot of people saw that happening.
Kiper may be a blowhard, but he's well connected and he has a 97% fail rate.
Right in the meaty part of the curve....
https://www.espnsa.com/2018-nfl-mock-draft-2-0-mel-kipers-picks-1-32/
I totally disagree with this take ... he maybe doesn't get the right team .. but he had 80% of the top 10 picks .. (8 for 10) he called Edmunds and Rosen that dropped to picks 11-20 ... my point is ... he's the original ... he created a bunch of cash flow in an industry that now has a bunch of copy cats (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery) ... mad props to Mel ... he provides insight to players I don't see often .. I'll take Mel and mocks any day in February when there is no football (all due respect to the new league on CBS).

I think tight ends are really difficult to project. The way tight ends are used in college is a little different these days as a lot of them really can't block. Why is it that Zach Ertz is so amazing but guys like Gavin Escobar or Troy Niklas flame out?
It really is about fit in a system and how the tight end is going to be used. And talent of course. So I think a tight end in the top ten is a very risky proposition, because it really is a boom or bust pick, like Eric Ebron. However, there is a ton of value that can be found late first round, early second.
With all of that said, TJ Hockenson is the real deal. Would I take him at 9? Not sure yet, but if we are going to make him a focal point of our offense, then I'd be all for it. I think you have to find the right fit and then make a concentrated effort to make the guy a main part of your offense, like KC and Philly have done with Kelce and Ertz.
And BTW, the history of top ten offensive lineman over the past few years is way worse than the history of tight ends on the first two days of the draft. People continue to reach on mediocre offensive linemen, passing on elite talent. Don't do it. No elite offensive lineman in this draft.
Admittedly I have not done a hard look at TJ .. just was referring to past top TE picks . but your comments intrigue me so will look .. that said .. guess my take comes from the fact that we have admittedly 3 maybe 4 (depending on thoughts on Teller) holes on our OL ... granted many OL draft busts like you indicate over the years ... but at the end of the day the TE is only one position and frankly needs more time than a WR on a slant pattern to get open .. so if no OL talent .. the TE may struggle to produce

I hear all this love from some for drafting TE's high in the draft .. and maybe that's years of the Gronk effect ... but I don't really see "game changers" at that position lately in the draft .. I just think we can wait till rounds 3-5 to address that position
http://www.drafthistory.com/index.php/positions/te
For example the link above shows all the TE's drafted in the last few years .. George Kittle at SF was a 5th rounder and in my opinion he's the best of the bunch going back to 2015 ..my point is .. ... but there aren't a lot of studs coming off their rookie pick .. hence we looking at say a Maxx Williams in FA. But I don't really think OJ Howard, aforementoined Maxx Williams, Hayden Hurst, Mike Gisecki, Dallas Goedert, Austin Saferian Jenkins .. all early picks have been game changes ... maybe Engram . .maybe Njoku ... maybe Hunter Henry .. but look at the carnage for those few nuggets. Stick with OL early please.

I’ll go with three WRs:
1. Deebo Samuel
2. Tyre Brady
3. Stanley Morgan
Sounds like the Matt Millen strategy in drafting .. we need OL so those WR's have time to get open

Not really. I get the idea behind but I’m speaking in realistic terms. It’s been established by several people already, “best player available” can be someone different in actuality. You are really drafting the best player available in your area of news
I haven't read the whole thread .. but my take is ... in especially in round 1 and 2 .. you draft for need .... in later rounds you go for BPA .. meaning if you have a 2nd round grade on a player and its the 4th round .. pull the damn trigger.

I get that, but Kiper is also especially bad at that and even worse this early in the process. He’s a blow hard who pushes his ideas that are almost always wrong.
Case in point, two guys he had is taking went 30th and 5th round. And while Hurst going 5th round due to a medical issue discovered during combine is a rare occurrence that made the discrepancy so big, it’s also evidence of why pre combine mocks have little reliable info.
I will also admit I find anything from Kiper as worthless, so I have a negative biased about anything he says out the gate. He’s a blow hard who is wrong like 95% of the time on everyone and everything but gets paid a ton to keep blowing, hard. Lol
I hear you ... but you have to give credit where credit is due .. he carved out a niche and has made a ton of money off it .. so regardless .. he's the "draft guru" whether we agree or not ... he does however spout decent info on players he's picking .. again you can agree or disagree .. he at least provides detail on certain players .. that I know nothing about ... Long Live Mel .. though his hair is struggling of late.

I know this is a top heavy defensive player draft and best player available mindsets ... but our defense was #2 in YPG allowed with for the year. Now I love Kyle W and he will be missed ... but the needs are on offense .. so if can't trade down .. then overspend the pick on OL player ... where we did good in not allowing yards ..we we're 3rd from the bottom in total yards offensively .... attack the need please in 2019 draft and free agency ... help our QB

Well .. at least he didn't forget his coffee cup in Miami
