Lets clear up some minsconceptions about this offense
Nihilarian replied to bobobonators's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is exactly right and really can't be said any better. This is a one-dimensional offense that only works if the run game is working well. In the four games won the Bills ran very well and in the three loses they didn't run well. The defense can't win games on its own as we have seen against the Jets and Dolphins as the longer they are on the field the more big plays they give up. This kind of supports the idea of switching from Schwartz's 4-3 to Ryan's 3-4 was a waste of time, energy and draft picks. Especially considering the offense could have used a boost in the WR, the RB and right side of the O-line dept this year. This team can win a bunch of games each if everyone can stay healthy! The problem is this franchise hasn't been able to stay healthy at so many positions over the last decade and it certainly doesn't help that the team keeps obtaining players with injury issues. -

Against the 49ers, "The Bills ran the ball 44 times for 312 yards, which was 12 more yards than the defense allowed the 49ers to gain in a 45-16 victory." “Obviously, I’d prefer to run. There’s no question about that. Maybe that’s the old school in me, but I still think you run the ball to win games. We know we need to do a better job of passing it and I thought we did today. The main thing is being efficient.” http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/10/17/rex-ryan-its-boring-football-but-were-winning/ Against Miami, the Bills rushed 22 times for 67 yards and without McCoy the offense looked so limited in not running the ball like they had done in their last four wins. Those rushing numbers are what lost the first two games and got Greg Roman fired!! Against the Ravens, 24 rushes for 65 yards! Against the NY Jets, 19 rushes for 86 yards! -
Fitz was a gunslinger that never realized his full potential in Buffalo for various reasons. 4-9, 6-10, 6-10. Jauron won more games with Edwards and JP! I realize this will draw the ire of many posters, but nevertheless, I think Kyle Orton was probably the best QB this team has seen since Drew Bledsoe mostly because he played behind the very worst ranked O-line the franchise has ever seen in that 2014 season. He also managed to go 7-5 with literally no rushing attack most games! Spiller had 300 yards for the entire year and Freddy had 500 while both players had the lowest rushing averages for their careers that season. Plus, both players were injured quite a bit that year. Orton was forced to win games with his arm and he pretty much did that with an oft-injured Watkins who the coaches wanted to use as a decoy for Robert Woods and Scott "fall down at the sight of a tackler & can't block" Chandler. Anyway, unfortunately, Tyrod isn't at that stage in his career where he has developed into a comeback type QB who can win games with just his arm. Not to mention that the three starting receivers are currently all injured and so are the two starting RB's. Then the right side of that line started to look really bad in allowing some big plays. I honestly don't understand how anyone can expect the young man to continue to develop under these circumstances. This is a big reason as to why I think Doug Whaley hasn't had a clue on how to build an offense to support a young, inexperienced QB.
-
Fixed! How much can anyone expect more from a young QB still learning and developing with no 1st and 2nd string WR and the 3rd string WR went down with a concussion later in the game. No starting RB that makes the entire offense go and helps the entire team win games. The right side of the O-line giving up big plays to the opposing D-line. To me, it's kinda surprising that Taylor didn't turn the ball over like most second-year starters would!!
-
If there was ever a year to take the division it was 2008 with Brady going on IR after the first game. The Bills went 5-1 to start that season but that one loss was the killer with Trent Edwards suffering a concussion and he should have been benched for the next five or six games. Anyway, this year the Bills were paper thin at so many positions and it was talked about all offseason by many of us Bills fans. Apparently, the Bills FO didn't think this was the case though and I wonder what they think now scrambling to find a decent WR, a decent replacement RB for Shady. That right side of the line was in question, the WR corps and RB depth were also questioned. Last week the Dolphins made the Bills RT, RG look bad and allowed some big plays. No Sammy, no Shady, and the latter is what helps the entire team win games. Until those two return, I can see the Bills dropping like a stone in power rankings. Unless Whaley can make a trade for a WR or RB!

It's not just a maybe no Shady, no AW, no Watkins, no Robert Woods. It's Marquise Goodwin is questionable in that he suffered a concussion against the Dolphins and although the team has yet to release info on his availability, I fear the worst. Yeah, that's right, Justin Hunter, Walter Powell,Brandon Tate and Ed Eagan just up from the PS are the WR's for this weeks game -
Marquise Goodwin and Aaron William Update Thread
Nihilarian replied to Bills Fan888's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Any new update from the team? Bills WR Marquise Goodwin suffered a concussion Week 7 against the Dolphins. Goodwin's head slammed on the turf after he went up high for an off-target throw in the fourth quarter. With Robert Woods (foot) looking unlikely to play this week, the Bills are ridiculously thin at receiver. Justin Hunter played the most snaps against the Dolphins. Biggest Surprise and Biggest Disappointment
Nihilarian replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Lorax has taken the entire league by surprise. If I'm not mistaken doesn't Thurman's coverages ask the CB's to be in more man coverage than they are used to being in? The second disappointment is Dareus not being smart enough and being so selfish that he couldn't stop with the weed. If I'm Whaley I find a way to trade him before he is gone for a year. The recklessness with the cars should have given someone in the FO some insight into his maturity. Rex Ryan has shown he can find really good DT's in the draft so find a way to dump this selfish bum before it's too late. Josh Gordon, what another waste of talent and the Browns lost their chance to obtain anything for him. -
I for one don't trust Whaley to find that elusive franchise QB for Buffalo. He has had so many chances the last few years and yet all he did was keep attempting to band-aid the team enough to get EJ to workout okay. Enough about his inability to find a quality QB though. "If" the Bills had a better O-line! A better receiving corps! A healthy RB they would be able to win games just like the Dallas Cowboys are winning and be 5-1 like Dallas is right now. They are using that same Rex Ryan philosophy in building a run first team with a good defense. Rayne Dakota Prescott is averaging 212 passing yards a game with 7 TD's, 1 INT- Tyrod Taylor 185 yards a game with 9 TD's, 2 INTs. The run vs pass stats are so very similar between the two teams. Is Tyrod Taylor somewhat currently limited in his NFL passing ability? I'd say yes to that and think there is still time and room for development. The guy can win games when you give him a solid run game to support his efforts! Take away that solid run game from Dak Prescott and I doubt he wins many games with just his arm.

Matt Stafford showing sometimes QBs can take a while...
Nihilarian replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Really the wrong QB to compare Tyrod Taylor against. Joe Flacco might be more of a match in only the way he was developed from a run first offense into a pass first offense. Still, the two QB's are totally different as one is a pure pocket passer like Stafford and Taylor is a running QB more like Cam Newton, Russell Wilson. RG3, Colin Kaepernick. With Tyrod Taylor's stature, I think about the only QB he compares to is Wilson and that guy is in a class by himself. Russell Wilson also has had a great coaching staff, supporting cast around him his entire time in Seattle. Looking at those four running QB's only two have had continued success. -
This 2016 team is predicated on being able to run the ball to win games, per Rex Ryan. Which was a big reason why he fired Greg Roman! This helps keep the defense fresh and on the bench and also allows a young, inexperienced QB to develop properly. Needless to say that Tyrod Taylor was the Buffalo Bills leading rusher against Miami with 7 carries for 35 yards and one TD! Gillislee had only 5 carries for 20 yards all game which was a 4.0 YPC AVG. Why the team didn't run him more often is a big question. #9) The Buffalo run defense was pathetic from the start to the finish and really stunk it up in the fourth quarter in giving up a 53-yard run to Ajayi and a 66-yard pass to Stills. #10) this could be the end for Buffalo because if they don't even attempt to the run the ball with Gillislee it allows the defense on the field all game and wears them down. Plus, Taylor hasn't been able to win games with his arm so it's like the first two weeks of the season for the rest of the year!

Most fans have only one focal point for losses and that is the QB position. However, jr1 is correct when he states that TT isn't the problem. It isn't Tyrod Taylor's fault that he was the leading rusher against the Dolphins with 7 carries for 35 yards and one TD!! Looking for real blame? The problem is that either the team didn't attempt to run the ball enough against Miami or didn't have the talent on the roster to get it done. One falls on Lynn the Bills OC and the other falls on the Bills GM. Then there is the defense that stunk up the field with an inability to stop the run all game long!! C'mon guys Bills fans are smarter than this!! Look at the entire team to determine what went wrong against Miami! The Bills had the lead in the game up until the fourth quarter and it wasn't Taylor who allowed a 53-yard run from the 2-yard line in the fourth!! It wasn't Taylor who allowed 214 yards rushing to some unknown RB!! It wasn't Taylor who allowed 454 yards of offense to the smelly fish!! The Bills showed that right side of the line with RT Mills and RG Miller is very suspect as both players gave up big plays!! The Bills receiver corps is ridiculously thin with made of glass Marquise Goodwin the #1 WR!! ...WTF!! The Bills don't have a replacement for LeSean McCoy so now all of a sudden Taylor isn't good enough because he didn't win the game after the Bills defense gave up a 66 yard TD to Kenny Stills and a 12 yard TD to the smelly fish in the fourth quarter!! Far, far too much blame to go around to factors other than the Bills QB in this one. Taylor out-performed Tallywhacker stat wise and a big reason why Miami's offense was the better offense was because they could run the ball this week and Buffalo couldn't!
-
Taylor is 4-3 this year with 9 passing TD's, 2 INT's and 2 rushing TD's with 869 yards of offense this year after 7 games. What's more important than winning the game with his arm is not losing the game with turnovers. The young man is doing exactly what's asked of him and his HC has even stated that the team needs to run the ball for the team to win games. It sure isn't Taylor's fault if he is the team's leading rusher with 7 attempts for 35 yards.
-
So what? We all know he isn't at an elite level just yet. The time to revisit this thread is at the end of the season to see if the kid has further developed. No QB's in the league would play well with a suspect right side of the line, without his two best WR's and without their elite RB. Take away Julio Jones, Devonte Freeman along with a weak right side of the line and see how Matt Ryan plays. EDIT: OH WAIT! That happened to the Falcons in 2013 when they went 4-12!
-
Belichick will watch the film on what Jay Ajayi did to that Bills D-line and just pound the rock with Blount to the tune of about 130 yards. Meanwhile, Hogan, Gronk, and Edelman will all probably have 100 yards each receiving. If those craptastic Dolphins lines can bully the Bills lines like they did against Buffalo then I think the Bills are in serious trouble. No McCoy and the team falls on its face again this week. Hey, on any given Sunday...except against the devil himself!!
-
For the love of god, it's been so long since the team had a QB who could throw for 225 yards one TD passing, one TD rushing and managed to do this with NO TURNOVERS!! He is not a Geno, not a Fitz but a guy who has had exactly 20 game starts and is still learning, developing as he goes. I might add it's nearly impossible to properly develop a young QB with no ground game and no solid receivers besides a decent, but not great TE. Tyrod needs a better offense around him besides two injured starting WR's, and elite RB that is injured and the right side of his line that plays like a sieve at times. There is a real reason why Dak Prescott looks so good as he is playing behind the league's best O-line with the league's best RB to help support the offense. It's going to be difficult for the Bills FO to determine if TT is worth the extra money if the supporting cast doesn't get healthy to help him improve.
-
I happen to love Tyrod Taylor even with his limited ability to "want" to make every throw. Considering just how crappy the wide receiver corps is at this point and also taking into consideration that the 2016 Bills are a run-first team. A run-first team that is predicated on being able to effectively move the ball on the ground and currently the Bills have only one single RB that can make that happen... is currently injured. The defense works well with a run first team that helps keep them fresh and on the sidelines while limiting their time on the field. Too much time on the field and the defense has a meltdown like we saw with the Jets and the 4th quarter of the Miami game. Still, Tyrod outplayed a supposed Miami franchise QB in tallywhacker in yards throwing, rushing and in TD's! We know that the current Bills QB is limited and the coaching staff and GM should be able to find quality talent at RB other than just one guy! Last year the Bills had Karlos Williams who filled in admirably and this offseason turned himself into a bloated loser who is now on the Steelers P.S. The Bills can win games even against good teams with a 100% healthy Shady McCoy and it might just be easier to find another top elite RB over an elite franchise QB.

Record prediction after 2 games
Nihilarian replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
As LeSean McCoy goes, so do the Buffalo Bills it seems. If Shady isn't 100% and can't bring his "A" game than the Bills have a very difficult time getting the run game going and thus the defense is out on the field for far too long. Last year McCoy missed four games with a hamstring problem and it looks like it could be worse this year. I can see the Bills losing to the Patriots and Seattle to go 4-5 at the bye week and it's going to really depend on if McCoy is 100% after that bye. The Bills have some very winnable games after the bye week and it all comes down to being able to run the ball effectively. @Cincy Jacksonville @Oakland Pittsburgh Cleveland Maimi @NY Jets However, considering the entire team's ability to win games is predicated on having a strong rushing attack, with little or no run game... the Bills might not win another game this year. -
The system didn't fail him the Buffalo defense did!!! Tyrod had better stats than Tallywhacker!! In that game, Tyrod had one TD passing one TD rushing! Dunno how much more he can do as he can't pass the ball and catch it at the same time! The biggest difference in the game was the Bills defense allowing Ajayi 214 yards rushing. It's like the Bills defenders forgot how to tackle in the fourth quarter!

Bills Defense vs. franchise/starting QB
Nihilarian replied to Mr. WEO's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bills fans have a perfect right to complain about the defense this week as it was supposed to improve with Lawson and Dareus playing. Instead, it was embarrassingly bad in allowing some scrub RB to rush for 214 yards along with a 53-yard run because Bills players couldn't make a tackle. It wasn't like they hadn't ever seen this before as all they needed to do was watch the game tape from last week between Pitt and Mia and yet it looked like nobody on the Bills coaching staff watched that game film. Buffalo was leading this game all the way up until the fourth quarter when the Bills defense melted down. Buffalo 267 yards of offense vs Miami 454 yards of offense and most of that came on the ground. Tyrod Taylor (14 of 28 for 221 with one TD passing, one TD rushing) actually outplayed Talleywhacker (15 of 25 for 204 yards, one TD) Buffalo with 22 rushing attempts for 67 yards was abysmal without McCoy. It is over if the defense keeps playing like it did against a 2-4 team that was #21 in offense and #26 in defense previous to playing Buffalo. This was a big complaint last year that at times the defense looked very unprepared to play in some games. -
If I'm not mistaken McCoy missed four games last year because of a bad hammy. He makes that offense go! Still, the Bills were leading for most of that game and the Bills defense just melted at the end.
-
To me, the Buffalo defense giving up 214 rushing yards to Ajayi is by far the biggest issue I have with today's game. Most of the fan base knew the Bills QB is limited and without his two best WR's and the team's star RB injured it would be a tough game. The Bills were ahead in the game until the 4th quarter and the run defense just melted.

Should Landry Get Suspended? Update: Fined 24k
Nihilarian replied to fridge's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If I'm not mistaken the league outlawed that shoulder hit to the head back in the 50's when a Cardinals player was knocking players out with vicious hits. Can't recall the name. That hit is a fine or suspension IMO. -
The "Rex ruined Mario Williams" crowd looks pretty silly...
Nihilarian replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Miami HC admitted he had Mario in there for far too many plays and teams were mostly running on them. They finally realized that he will do much better as a 3rd down pass rusher. The right side of that line really stunk it up quite a bit as both Miller and Mills gave up some big plays! That is the difference between a high talent early round pick and a mid-round pick who will never be more than an average player.
