  1. McDermott would bring Mike McCoy as OC if rumors are true (and if Vance Joseph doesn't grab him first). He has a good reputation for getting a lot out of QBs (Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow).

I'm not saying I'm for or against him. You can't really get an feel for someone's potential until you speak with him. As fas as I know, no one here has done that.

By the way, Mike McCarthy was OC of the last ranked offense in the NFL right before becoming head coach of the Packers. Just saying. Ranking doesn't mean everything because these guys aren't interviewing for a coordinator position.

  2. As fans, I think we all need to understand that there is a whole hell of a lot that we don't know. I don't know if anyone on this board knows Anthony Lynn personally, but a lot of NFL people do. The NFL is a small circle, relatively speaking, and if Anthony Lynn is getting this many interviews, it's because he is respected in the community as a smart football guy, and a leader.

Does this mean he'll be successful? I don't know. But I don't understand why people are confused by the amount of love he's getting around the league.

  3. I always appreciate the effort that goes into posts like this. I too think we need to learn from the past in drafting a QB.

Every great QB must have two fundamental qualities. Accuracy and football smarts. This has to be the foundation in finding a QB. Yes you want leadership, strong arm, poise, etc. But those qualities fluctuate in the good quarterbacks. Brady didn't have the strongest arm. Big Ben was immature. Accuracy and football IQ are more important.

It's easy to see why the Bills front office liked EJ. Great character. Great size. Strong arm. Bright kid. But his accuracy was a problem at Florida State. Dak Prescott's scouting reports all mentioned that he had smarts and accuracy (67% completion rate in college).

Is it possible to have a smart, accurate QB fail? Yes, Trent Edwards. But these two traits will always give you better odds finding that franchise guy. From the scouting reports, it seems that Trubisky is accurate. I don't know what he has between the ears.

BTW, every scouting report mentions that Chad Kelly's accuracy is streaky. Ignoring his attitude issues, he's an automatic, "no" in my book just based on accuracy (if I'm GM).

  4. I'm not quite sure which people commenting here you're referring to, because your scenario is so hyperbolic it makes almost no sense.

Are you saying "of course Doug's gonna lie, so the media shouldn't even bother trying to do their jobs"? Honest question I have no idea what point you have, if any.

I'm referring to the people criticizing Whaley for not being forthcoming. How do they expect Whaley to respond to these Rex questions? Is Whaley supposed to throw Pegula under the bus?

It's my opinion that these fans, and the media, are just bitter because they want complete transparency. Now they're throwing a tantrum by calling for everyone to be fired.

  5. Apparently this is the conversation with which some on this board would have been satisfied.

Reporter: Doug, why was Rex fired?

Doug: Well, Pegs the boss, the billionaire who owns the company, f%*$ed up. He called me after the phone call with Rex and said, "Dougie, I f#$%ed up bro. You were right. I was wrong. But if you tell anyone in the media, your ass is grass." But you know what guys? I believe in honesty more than my high paying job running one of only 32 NFL teams in the world. And I don't care if I never work in this business again. Rex was Terry's guy. Blame his ass.

I think the logic of a person not wanting to blame his boss in public is just too much for some people to handle.

  6. The Bills didn't have to give Tyrod that contract, they had all the leverage. Last year Taylor still left a lot of questions unanswered. It seemed to me that the Bills did him a solid with that contract by paying him more than they were contractually obligated to pay him (his salary was peanuts by starting QB standards). That's why an end of year parameter was added in my opinion. The Bills were likely hoping Tyrod would sink or swim. Unfortunately, he just floated along doing neither.

To the people saying that players won't want to come here because of the Taylor contract, I see it the opposite way.

  7. I truly feel that some "fans" just love when the Bills are unsuccessful. Like they revel in Bills complaints. Then they can just pull out their annual, "burn it all down," comments. This simplistic view allows one to let out their anger without actually being analytical.

Our team is more talented than at any other time this century. The GM is getting the types of players that his coach is asking for. If our defensive coach could have provided some semblance of a defense, we would've been in the playoffs the last 2 years. If the last offensive coach could have provided some semblance of an offense, we would have made the playoffs the 2 previous years.

But some people will just ignore all of this because, "I'm mad so fire everyone!"

You want a dumpster fire? Look at the fans.

  8. What makes sense to me is that we stop focusing on the hot mastermind coordinator of the season. In my opinion the head coach is not supposed to be a hot coordinator. The HC needs to be able to lead, communicate, motivate, direct, and delegate. A good coordinator doesn't necessarily make a good head coach. Just like a great salesman/woman doesn't necessarily make a great manager. The job duties are different.

Mike McCarthy was the OC for the 49ers for one year before becoming the head coach. His offense finished dead last in the NFL before becoming the Packers' coach. Andy Reid was the QB coach before becoming a head coach.

On the other side, think of excellent coordinators like Dick LeBeau, Norv Turner, Mike Martz, Steve Spagnuolo. They were all terrible as the head guy.

This article has an interesting take.

  9. http://www.espn.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/21796/two-truths-and-a-lie-make-sean-mcdermott-a-great-defensive-coordinator

Here are a few interesting quotes from the article:

"Coach McDermott's strength as a coach right now, without a doubt, is his ability to motivate guys and keep guys tuned into what we're trying to do as a football team and as a defense," Davis said.

McDermott's strength also is getting the most out of what some might consider second-tier players. He's done it time and time again, particularly in a secondary that has been a revolving door the past four seasons.

"What I look for are guys that work hard, have a great work ethic and embrace that underdog mentality a little bit. And certainly there is no substitute for toughness."

McDermott calls his defense player friendly. He builds around the strengths of players and finds ways to cover up weaknesses. He doesn't try to turn a 3-4 end into a 4-3 end.

"That's important, rather than tying them up with intricate schemes and things," McDermott said. "We can certainly do that. It's like the game of chess. But at the same time a player has to be able to execute and play fast and be fundamentally sound."

  10. An NFL developmental league would not be a money making endeavor. It's all about viewers and advertising dollars. How many people watch NBA summer leagues, or MLB minor league games? Hell, how many casual fans watch preseason NFL games?

The reason college football works is that there are so many people emotionally involved. These schools have more than 20,000 students at any one time. Then you have alumni, students' families, local population, state pride, etc. This means a lot of viewers.

An NFL developmental league would have none of this.

  11. This goes to show that you don't hire, as a head coach, an offensive coordinator to fix your offense, and you don't hire a defensive coordinator to fix your defense. You hire a leader with vision and communication skills (much like a good CEO). Let the head coach hire the right guys to fix the team. This is why the hot coordinators don't always succeed as head coaches.

And stay away from the head coaches who act as a de facto coordinator. That's not the head coaches responsibility.

  12. Success as a coordinator does not mean success as a head coach. Just because someone can put together a great offensive or defensive gameplan doesn't mean they can communicate or provide direction for a team.

A successful coach must be a CEO type who can direct a team, communicate, and delegate.

The Bills need to evolve from the traditional NFL mentality of just hiring a hot new coordinator. Coaches need great intangibles just like great QBs do.

  13. Mic drop. Thank you. Whaley keeps finding contributors. His hiring of Monos was a very underrated move.

Yes, he needs to find a QB, but how many teams in the league actually have that elite quarterback? They don't grow on trees. And how many GMs in the NFL are batting 1.000 in the draft. This team has talent with no coaching direction.

Just imagine Matt Ryan throwing to Watkins, Shady, Woods, and Clay (and a defense that isn't schemed for 2001). Let Whaley try to build this team. We've come a long way, talent wise, from the Marv Levy years. The guy who builds a team is the GM. We need some continuity there, especially when we're seeing growth.

  14. I know stats aren't everything (or rather, wins are the only stat that matters). But the Chiefs are 23rd in total offense, and 28th in total defense. How the hell are they 10 - 4 right now. They were a last second field goal away from being 11 - 3.

By contrast, the Bills are 18th and 15th respectively. Based on these rankings, you'd expect the Bills to be right around the middle of the pack as far as overall record.
