  14. I posted this over the Sabres board but a bunch of you dont post there much so here it is..... He has hinted a couple of times about handing up the mic.... Im not folding no chairs here guys..... We will win! But... If the NHL screws us over again...... This could be the last time we hear Rick guys.... Sabres hockey and all us fans will miss this guy! Rick Jeanneret (born in Switzerland and raised in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada) is the television and radio play-by-play announcer for the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres. Having started with the team on radio during the 1971-72 season, he is the longest-tenured announcer in the NHL. He began television duties during the 1995-96 season. Jeanneret, a Canadian of Swiss descent who bears an uncanny resemblance to the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield, is known for his self-deprecating humor, energetic delivery, colorful player nicknames and passionate goal calls. In 1963, Jeanneret took over the play-by-play of a Niagara Falls Flyers Junior A hockey game for the regular announcer, who had become sick. Jeanneret became the color analyst the following season before assuming full-time play by play radio duties in 1965. In 1971, Jeanneret had a trial run doing the call for the Cincinnati Swords, the Sabres' top minor league affiliate. When the Sabres took the ice for their second season, for a game with the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Aud on October 10, 1971, Jeanneret was in the radio booth high above the ice surface. From 1984 until 1992, he did the Sabres' play-by-play in addition to being a popular early-morning disc jockey at CJRN-AM in Niagara Falls, Ontario. In 1992, he chose to retire from CJRN and concentrate solely on the Sabres. "I had enough of two jobs. I finished the game, came home and had to be up by 4 a.m.," he said. Jeanneret, whose own nickname is RJ, helped close the Aud on the final night of the regular season in 1996 with an emotional tribute to his colleague Ted Darling, who was the voice of the Sabres from 1970 until worsening of his Pick's Disease forced him to retire in the midst of the 1991-92 season. "I wish that standing next to me right now was Ted Darling," said Jeanneret from the ice surface in a postgame ceremony. "See you in September, one block in that direction," said Jeanneret, pointing toward the new arena, then dubbed the Crossroads Arena and now called HSBC Arena after a stint as Marine Midland Arena. In 2005, Jeanneret and the Sabres released a CD that collected some of his most memorable calls. Proceeds from the CD, which was titled Roll the Highlight Film, went to charity. Some of Jeanneret's most memorable calls: :AND THIS SERIES IS GOING BACK TO WHERE JIMMY HOFFA IS! BACK TO THE MEADOWLANDS IN NEW JERSEY!" After Dave Hannan's goal in game 6 of the 1994 Eastern Confernce Quarterfinals against the New Jersey Devils. "Oh Now Do You Believe, Now Do You Believe, These Guys Are Good, Scarrrrry Good!" ...after Jason Pominville's series-winning goal in the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Ottawa Senators. "LA LA LA LA LA LA LAFONTAINE!" ...after each goal scored by Hall of Fame center Pat LaFontaine in the early to mid 90s. "MAY DAY! MAY DAY! MAY DAY! MAY DAY! MAY DAY!" ...after winger Brad May's spectacular series-clinching overtime goal at Memorial Auditorium, or the Aud, against Boston's Andy Moog in game four of the first round of the playoffs in the 1992-93 season. Of the call, Jeanneret would later say, "It just happened and I came out with the remark. All I can say is it was spontaneous. The words just came up. People ask, 'Did you plan to use that call?' How could I do that? That man (May) hadn't scored a goal in 29 or 30 games. If I were going to plan ahead, I'd start with No. 16 (Pat LaFontaine), No. 89 (Alexander Mogilny) or No. 10 (Dale Hawerchuk)." Despite his insistence that the call was spontaneous, Jeanneret had used "May Day!" at least once before, when May scored an overtime goal to beat the Blues at the Aud in January 1993. "TOP SHELF WHERE MAMA HIDES THE COOKIES!" ...after a goal is scored into the top part of the net. (Jeanneret has admitted he heard this catchphrase years ago but could not remember who the announcer was.) "STUUUUUUUUUUUU BARNES" .... after a goal by Stu Branes was scored "CALL A COP! CALL A COP! HE ROBBED HIM BLIND!" ...after a Sabre goaltender makes a spectacular save. "ARE YOU READY LEGION OF DOOM? HERE COME THE BUFFALO SABRES!" ...after Derek Plante's game 7 overtime winner in the 1st round of the 1997 playoffs against the Ottawa Senators. Some of Jeanneret's nicknames for Sabres players over the years include... The French Gorilla (Donald Audette) The Little Devil (Miroslav Satan) The Sandman (Geoff Sanderson) Bobby O (Bob Sauve) Captain Crunch (Michael Peca) Alexander the Great (Alexander Mogilny) The Boogeyman (Bob Boughner) Wow-ie Hous-ley (Phil Housley) Oo-la-la Pierre (Pierre Turgeon) Matt the Rat (Matt Barnaby) The Rayzor (Rob Ray)
  15. Sabres chat link SDS has a great chat up now and we need some support over there guys! Come on over!
  16. 5-0 now guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. SDS has a great chat set up for us over the Sabres board and more people are needed! Come on over guys and cheer on Buffalo's Cup RUN!!!
  18. I guess thats why I put "looking Deeper" in the title... Might be too much reading for you, ill add a picture the next time....
  19. 1000000000 % correct. The Colts are built just like the Buffalo Bills of the early 90's. Colts are not as firm on the D as we were. Polian is a more focused O man. Marv is looking for the balance here. I still think JP is on probation here this season. I think Buffalo may just draft another QB next year IF we have the hight pick. Back on the Colts though...... What got Buffalo into those Super Bowls were the 12th man and weather! Buffalo's fans are a billion times louder and the weather is a wonderful thing in the winter!!!! We did win some huge road games though those years.
  20. Taking the first 5 rounds of the draft. Both 1st may have been a reach but I dont think the trade was there. Take the first round.... Nate may be finished in Buffalo. He has NOT signed his tag contract (yet) and wants a long term deal. I dont think Marv is going to do that for Nate. Nate's play was not up to snuff for top pay..... If possible, trade him for next years draft... Houston and Oakland will jump on Nate for a 3rd or more..... Whitner will be a starter from game one on. Simpson and Youboty were STEALS for the Bills. This also shores up Nates goodbye. Simpson will grow faster that Youboty as a player but I give the talent to Youboty in the end. Both these guys will be top secondary guys in 2-3 years. McCargo - Its not about when a person is drafted, its comes down to what he is drafted for. Williams has some nice size and better speed than the 2 other DT taken before him hands down. HE IS ALSO SMARTER... Marv is going to a faster front which will open the door for our LB's. Rememeber Paup? He went nuts (17 sack season) due to Buffalo's speedy line. Only question now with the LB's is the health of Spikes when he returns. Williams (DT 5th round) Will be a starter. Growing pains for DT are easy to solve and I think both these guys will be starters, side by side... Butler- Will start but struggle against top linemen in his first season. Will be the anchor in 2 years on this team.... Pennington- Very smart and good feet. Will fill in on the line as a backup and may start in 3-5 years Merz- Big work in progress but talent is there.... Now comes the facts of this season for us guys. Is it a write-off? Sure is and we should all be happy about it. We will go into next years draft with the high 1st-5th pick. I got a feeling you will see Buffalo take another QB and see Marv push to build this team in the draft and bring in some good (not superstars) supporting and starting players. I dont think Marv is looking for the best player for each position but more of the smartest player with the most talent for the position. I will support my Bills and B word about losing but I know this team will get better in the next couple of years. Go Bills and COME ON OVER TO THE SABRES CHAT TONIGHT AND HELP US CHEER FOR OUR BUFFALO SABRES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. If anyone missed it, PTI on ESPN backed up Marv and Buffalo's first 3 round picks.
  22. and you are?????? will we all see you this september?
  23. Mccargo is a good pic, im not crying there, its just the position of the pick. I think we jumped a tad too high for him. Also, no doubt we could of traded down for Whitner, if the trade down was even there...
  24. This sums it up.... How in the hell does this team market itself now? Reading through the posts, Its a mixed crowd and none of us can judge a this team until week 4-5. But on that note... How does this team sell tickets with this lineup? This is NOT a good draft for Buffalo. Our O line still sucks, our D line is going to suck..... Marv on a jello break during our picks? I hope im wrong but we are now going to over pay for 2 players that would of went far later in the first and mid second rounds. Marv is looking for that magic he had back in 1987 and 88 but just chewed a fart.... 4-12 season heading our way?
