  1. Fine, you win. EJ is the 4th best QB in the last 44 years.

I noticed that you gave EJ credit for scoring on a drive where Spiller took the ball 50 yards, EJ threw a 1 yard dump, and an incompletion. What a master!

Show me where I said he was the 4th best QB. As far as the one drive, I see you didn't mention the other three drives.1. EJ 6-9 76 yards, CJ 3 for -7, 2. EJ 3-3 64 yards, two point conv., CJ 2 for 6 yards, Fred 1 for 4 yards TD, 3. EJ 6-8 51 yards TD, CJ and Fred 0 for 0. Those three drives EJ 15-20 191 yards TD, two point conv., CJ 5 for -1 yards, Fred 1 for 4 yards TD. He accounted for all but 3 yards.
  2. To answer your question, nope. Read the thread.

My apologies. Your statements about EJ not being super or great in the Carolina game isn't supported in the stats or history. EJ was 27 for 39 296 yards 69.2 % 1 TD & 1 INT. That's damn good for your second game in the NFL against the #2 Defense. The Bills scored on 4 of 6 second half drives. Those drives netted 78, 80, 50, and 80 yards. The GW drive was 80 yards in 1:36 he must have done something right. He was only the fifth QB to engineer a fourth quarter drive in his first or second game since 1960.

  3. Of course he gets credit! You're misunderstanding.

The only thing I said was that while the Carolina game was good for EJ, we shouldn't bandy it about like he dominated, or looked great. He got the job done and that's awesome. But it wasn't a super performance.

I think it's because an excellent game for EJ is 200 yards and 2 TD's, while an excellent game for some of the superstars is 350 yards, 3-4 TD's.

I mean EJ threw 11 TD's this year in 10 games. Manning threw like 55 in 16. That's an apples to apples comparison, not a Sportscenter highlight.

Did you just try to compare one of the best QBs ever with 15 years experience and better supporting cast with a rookie? That's like comparing LeBron James with Cody Zeller ( Cody was actually picked #4 ).Very weak argument.
  4. Speaking for myself:

    1) Because if the Bills played any one of their up-coming regular season match-ups today, they would be considered underdogs in all but four of them.Underdogs win all the time

Actually, underdogs win some of the time. It's not an enviable position.

    2) EJ did not show me nearly enough to think he could be successful, if he stays healthy. For a rookie he showed enough

Enough? What he showed was inconsistency- when he was on the field.

    3) Our weakest position was at QB, and we have not improved that position. Wrong it was LG then RT.

Our QB situation last season was horrific! How could anyone say differently?

    4) One knee injury could, perhaps, be bad luck. It's hard to look at three knee injuries as bad luck. One year out of all the years he's played, I'd call it a fluke not a trend.

One year out of... ONE YEAR. Fluke?

    5) The best thing about our team last season was our defense. Then we lost our DC, and our pro-bowl safety. Wrong #2 rushing offense, both RBs are back.

I will agree that our rushing offense was the best thing about our offense!

    6) I haven't seen enough improvements in the offseason to warrant that large of a shift in our record. Plenty of talent added this offseason.

Plenty? As another poster pointed out, the acceptance of mediocrity by Bills fans is disturbing. Some good talent, sure. Plenty? How much is plenty? Enough to bring us back to the playoffs and out from under the bottom of our division?

I appreciate the optimism. But, I'll stick with pessimism and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

ALL ROOKIE QBs ARE INCONSISTENT.Besides Marino please name me which ones that were not. You said QB was the weakest position, LG was easily the weakest position with RT coming in second, I don't know what you were watching if you don't agree with this. I said out of all the years he played football one years a fluke, in which you replied ONE YEARS A FLUKE. Funny I didn't know EJ got drafted in the first round without ever playing, GOOD FOR HIM. Stat wise rushing offense beat out passing offense, rushing defense, passing defense, and special teams, so it was the best part of our team. As far as player additions being good enough we will have to wait and see. Last year looked very underwhelming, but turned out very good, I'll trust Whaley he's earned it. I'll always be optimistic, it beats everything else.

  6. For those speculating: Aaron Donald's NFL position would be nearly identical to that played by Geno Atkins of Cincinnati--he'll play inside as either a 3T or a 4i.

He doesn't really have the arm length or hip torque to play as a DE, which is fine. He'll likely be extremely effective as an interior defender.

I reiterate that he may be BPA at 9, and I'd be more than fine with the pick...although I have a hunch that Buffalo doesn't pick at 9.

Bill Polian stated if he didn't play the three technique he would be nearly as effective. But if he did he would be a perennial pro bowler.
  7. I didn't think I needed to rewrite the list of numbers. I quoted it. You wrote it. It's plenty obvious it is not a clustered distribution. I was merely trying to frame the distribution and assert that it was a scattershot of performance -- from very bad to pretty good. But, no, it was never my intention to try and say QBs don't have good games and bad games. That is absurd, obviously incorrect, and doesn't really need to be argued.

All's good. Must have mistaken what you were implying. I'm an EJ fan, but of course he need to improve if the Bills are going to make the playoffs. Which every Bills fan, those who think EJ has what it takes, those who don't, and those undecided, desperately wants, at this point in time.
  8. You also are looking for synergy. Look last year on the Patriots how even Tom Brady struggled with timing with his new WR. Now look what he did with them by the end of the year of a bunch of mediocre WR. He really is one of the best of all time. No one hates the Patriots more than me, just like the Dolphins of old, but I respect the skills of Brady and Marino.

If he can do more of this one off training just to get timing down to a science, maybe we don't see as many poor throws. Teams win, not individuals so I like they as a group worked on their timing and built teamwork. That's great.

Absolutely, timing of routes, where and when the WR wants, especially with Stevie with the unorthodox way he runs routes(does what he has to not picking on him). Even strategy, as far as, if a CB does this, I'm going to break off the route and do that. All in all just get a better feel for each other, can't hurt the comradery amongst them either.
  9. No you used the range in the rating " Thanks for proving my point. Ratings ranging from 48 to 121 are not "consistent"., I was just showing other good QBs have the same. As far as EJ needing to be more consistent on the high end, how many rookies, going into his 2nd year, at any position, ever, don't need to be more consistent. Maybe a handful ? I was assuming that was a given.

  10. That's great, but he needs to perform on the field. We have had perceived leaders, we need performance. Winning on the field is all that matters in the NFL.

It's not all that matters on this team at this time IMO . This is an important step for him and the team. Not only did he partake in the offseason offensive workouts, he set it up and ran the show(he showed veteran leadership). There needs to be one voice in the huddle and the guys in the huddle be receptive to said voice. I believe this takes a big step towards that. It also can't hurt with timing of routes etc.
  11. I would be happy with either Robinson or Matthews with the 9th pick but I'm not sold on Lewan & I expect both Robinson & Matthews will be gone by the time we pick. That is why I think we will end up going with LB at 9, either Barr or Mosely.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do not happen. I really think the defense has gotten a lot of attention over the last few years, hopefully they use the 1st rounder and most of the picks, for that matter, on upgrading the offense(especially the o-line)
  12. The #BillsMafia@TheBillsMafia 16m

    From @DanBegnoche / @AFCEastDaily: According to @TonyMoeaki81, the @EJManuel3-led workouts out in CA are “EJ’s show.” http://ow.ly/3js0NW

    Moeaki on "Camp Manuel"

Nice find Yolo, thanks for posting. Good to hear. Sounds like this year EJ is already taking more of a leadership role, now he's not a rook. I'm really pulling for him, he has so many good qualities you want in a QB and seems more mature than his years . I'm sure all this extra work with the WRs, TEs, and RBs will payoff come Sept. Good news !!!
  13. 1st things first: We Bills fans are a very spoiled lot when it comes to RBs. Therefore, we can have very real debate about who is a better RB, moreso than ANY other team, ever. We've had 27 RBs produce 1000 yrd rushing seasons. Far and away the very best in League history. This gets lost in the quagmire that is our overall W/L record. Fred's 1-1K season brings him into the fold along with Greg Bell, Cookie, Terry Miller, Antoine Smith and CJ*. All the others are multiple 1K rushers: Travis Henry -2, Lynch -2, McGahee -2, Joe Cribbs -3, OJ -5 & Thurman -8. (all seasons with the Bills solely. CJ* obviously could add to his total) This makes Fred rather pedestrian when compared to the rest of our historic RBs. I loved Mini-Max too and it's hard to believe -looking at his very average career stats -that I thought he was great.. HA!

IMO, Freddie gets such undying love and admiration from us these days because the teams that have been around him for 7+ seasons are among our worst ever. And THAT is really saying something.. Yes, he's a hard worker, respectful of the League and team who gave him a chance to perform and he's been virtually the sole shining light of a dismal franchise since he arrived. But in context of the teams' history, he fits somewhere in the Robb Riddick, Roland Hooks, Kenny Davis, Ronnie Harmon group -an effective RB over approximately 5 seasons. Certainly, he'll be remembered fondly for his play and character. Best Ever? Not on this franchise.

Well said, funny thing is, if I could get Freddie at the same starting age of all those RBs, I'd only take Thurman and OJ ahead of him. In all fairness, that excludes Cookie, I never saw him play.
  14.

I have said this before.....if the Bills were all in on EJ last season, they would not have traded back. I really believe this, and think that they had another QB that they rated equal or close to him.

Listening to an interview with Buddy the consensus of the draft room was they, with confidence, could trade down to the middle of the 1st and still get EJ. He said he they were talking the possibility of a trade with St Louis a couple of days before the draft. Hard for you to make the statement you made without all the inside knowledge. So, if you can get another second rounder and get the QB you want, that means your not all in ? Low risk/High reward. He also said they had a couple more trade offers for the 16th pick, but no longer had the confidence they would still land EJ. To me it sounds smart/ to you it sounds like they were not all in on EJ.
  15. I feel like I am taking crazy pills reading this thread.

You bring up last year's draft as if it were somehow relevant to this year's draft and the talent on the Bills. Matthews played Rt every year before this so that projection that you are so sure of is based off of him playing rt.

Bloodline means nothing. How are Michael Jordan's kids doing in the NBA? Oh yeah they don't play in it.

As for where they were drafted by that logic Ryan Mallet should be starting for the Pats*. He was drafted in the 3rd round and that Brady guy was drafted in the 6th.

Glenn has been a stud in the NFL. If by some crazy happenstance Matthews beats him out sure you start Matthews at LT. Except there won't be a competiiton. They will work with him at RT to give him as many reps and as much practice as possible. The whole losing Glenn idea is ridiculous to me as Glenn will be here for at least 2 more years. If he proves to be great probably much longer than that. Drafting Matthews does't ruin the chances of anything. The whole you can get a serviceable rt later is true. However he is projecting to be a great one and that is why he is talked about in the top 10.

I feel very strongly that Matthews will be the pick if he is available. Reading the OBD tea leave, Matthews has been in a for a visit, there was just an article about how good Marrone thinks Glenn is, and RT is the reamining position to be addressed of the original offseason list (run stuffing lb - Spikes, Te- Chandler resigned, maybe Kaufmann, OG - Williams, WR - Williams.). If he isn't available I'm thinking trade down but that is a different thought for a different thread.

Very well said. I still want to know how the OP definitely knows Mathews is better, and good RTs are not a dime a dozen, that thinking needs to be and is being updated.
  16. Obviously it's not a given that the Bills will select LT/RT J. Mathews or that he will even last until the #9 pick overall, but for the sake of argument let's assume that he does make it to #9 and the Bills smartly select him.

Would it be a given that he would play RT?? Not necessarily.

Glenn has proven to be a very capable LT, there's no doubt about that, but if Mathews proves to be even better, and by my estimation he is definitely a better LT than Glenn, then I think the Bills would play Mathews at LT and Glenn at RT. That would certainly make us very strong at the OT position for many years to come.

When you consider that aspect of it, Mathews becomes very highly coveted.

For the most part, RTs are a dime a dozen. LTs are not. Because LTs have to protect the QB's blind side (considering that most NFL QBs are right-handed) and go up against the opposition's best, most athletic pass rusher for the most part, they are much more in demand and well worth a top ten selection.

Considering that Mathews would have been the #1 selection overall last year had he opted for the draft as a Junior and that the three top OTs in this year's draft (Mathews/Robinson/Lewan) are all considered to be better than the top two OTs that were drafted last year in the top 5, that should really tell you the kind of player that Mathews is and the great value that the Bills would be getting at #9 overall.

For my money, being able to select J. Mathews at #9 overall would be a God-send for EJ Manuel and the Bills. He is my pick for the Bills in R1.

For the most part the OP's statement are/were true regarding LT/RT. Unfortunately, it should have been written 8-10 years ago, maybe it could have coincided with the release of the movie Blind Side ? More recent thinking has defenses getting a 2nd top notch DE or switching a dominant DE around to attack weaker RTs. 4 tackles went in the top 11 last year and though some will be making a switch to LT in the future (Eric Fisher is this year) they all played RT last year. The thinking in the NFL is going in the direction that teams need a top notch LT and RT.
