    The whole thing about "we lost x games by less than x points" is a red herring. It's just the bell curve in action. Most NFL games are won or lost by seven or less points. It's not a point of honor to lose by relatively little. It just means you lost. That's all. You can go to nearly every team in the league nearly every year and they can say the same thing.

    Cleveland Browns lost a lot of close games last year. The NFL has a lot of games that get decided in the final few minutes. Buffalo still does not have a QB that can throw when they have to throw during this critical time so I expect similar losses late.

  2. yeah it was nice to hear...i think he will still be rooting for buffalo...he was a pegula family friend, and even terry said there were tears at the firing

    From someone I know that works there Whaley actually worked really hard and was one of the people who cared the most. We can certainly say the results weren't good but working for the Pegulas isn't easy.

  3. lol He wanted full control because Whaley was not good at his job.

    Whaley may well have not been good at his job but it is irrelevant. You stated Mcdermott started working with Whaley and then thought, "Oh, time for a change."

    McDermott claimed Pegulas came to the realization it was time for a change AFTER the draft!

    The Buffalo News spells out the facts, Mcdermott was getting his people in. If you like that, great. But don't change the facts or the timeline.

  4. "It was notable that, the day before the "formal" interview that would include Whaley and former director of player personnel Jim Monos, the Pegulas invited McDermott to join them for dinner on their yacht in Boca Raton, Fla.

    He had the Pegulas at "hello." He impressed them so much, that as Kim drove McDermott to the airport after the next day's six-hour session, she was already telling him to have his wife (who had been invited to Boca Raton as well, but couldn't make the trip) call her for information about housing and other essentials in Western New York.

    Whaley's virtual disappearance from public view after McDermott's arrival wasn't a coincidence. It was a fulfillment of a condition of McDermott's employment."

    Interesting! Thanks for the info!

    So, by your standard, isn't it a new idea to reboot a franchise by hiring a "wrestling coach", and to completely remake the talent acqiuisition of a team? That's a new idea, and a totally un-Billsy one. Let's see how it goes. I'm 50/50 as to its success, TBH, but I love the concept of what is happening now, JBC, or not.

    You brought up two different points, the coaching and the GM/personnel department.

    Sean McDermott doesn't look like a really new idea at all. Most NFL teams cycle through personalities. You have a players' coach, next guy is a disciplinarian. Remember when we went with Gregg Williams after Wade? He is another defensive coach who will be playing a scheme based on zone defense where the front 4 attack the line of scrimmage. We had that in Jauron/Fewell. I don't think he is a top end X's and O's guy. He seems to want to be an admin/CEO. As does his GM who came with him.

    The guys we hire are just names. Until they start drafting top talent it means nothing.

  6.

    I don't know how your argument holds true when the Bills rebuilt the talent acquisition part of their FO, and also hired a new HC. JBC could be good, but who knows? He wasn't hired in a league that's starving of HC and QB talent. Time will tell.

    Because most NFL teams are not run very well. They call on guys like Casserly and Polian. Sure, these guys were good but new ideas are in short supply. It's an old boys network.

  7.

    Didn't #BADOL start TBD? I remember checking out the missive, maybe their's, before I had joined. Anybody who starts a board like this, for talking about the game, talking about our favorite team, is super awesome in the Book of NeckBeard. :-)

    Neither Kyle or JBC were those guys. I'm sorry, but I just don't think that they are / were. There were rumors of Kyle being "done" last year, and it was shocked that a resurgent Falcons squad caused his ascent. JBC, I don't know, but it's not like people fell all over themselves to hire JBC as HC either.

    Because most NFL teams are run the same way. There is a lot of group think which is why the Patriots roll over the rest of the NFL. Jim Bob Cooter will be a head coach and a very good one. His skills are in short supply.

  8. Disagree. He thought EJ had the "it" factor and pushed him right to the end. EJ had to be one of the reasons for his not getting along with the head coaches. Neither coaching staff saw EJ as a starter.

    There is no basis for this theory but I have no interest in debating it. EJ's contract ran out and he was not resigned. EJ only played in the last game because of Tyrod's contract situation, it was not a showcase game.

  9. He did try. He thought EJ was a franchise guy.

    Who care about EJ? Teams draft QB's high all the time and miss. The point is you can't just sit back and cry about the miss. You need to go do it until you get the guy. Knowing what I know about how Whaley was ready to move heaven and earth to get a QB for Buffalo it does make me a bit sad that just as the light comes on they take away the keys. Here's to hoping the new guys don't think they have forever to improve the position.

    Ozzie Newsome missed on Kyle Boller. He went and got Flacco and won a Superbowl. Bills miss on EJ and since then no 1st or 2nd round pick on a QB in the last 4 drafts.

  10.

    @SiriusXMNFL

    Doug Whaley: One of the guys we took a lot of pride in, when we didnt have a 1st round pick was Ronald Darby. #Bills

    Doug Whaley: This is a production based business and bottom line is we didn't produce enough wins.

    "If I get a shot again to be a GM in this league I would make sure I secured a franchise QB, quickly" Doug Whaley

    Doug Whaley on Pegulas: "Great owners, great people & great owners. There's nothing that we asked as personnel dept that they said no to."

    @mikerodak

    Doug Whaley on draft room: “It wasn’t uncomfortable at all. We worked well together. It was a great working relationship [with Sean McD]."

    Doug Whaley: “As a parting gift, we left them with two [first-round picks] next year.”

    Doug Whaley on @SiriusXMNFL that the Pegulas are “great people and great owners. … We did not produce. I take full responsibility."

    @TyDunne

    Hearing how Brandon Beane breaks down the QB position compared to how Doug Whaley did should give all Bills fans hope for better days.

    @SiriusXMNFL

    Whaley: "It was business as usual in that draft room and we all worked well together and the draft the #Bills had was reflective of that".

    @viccarucci

    Whaley: "Right now I'm reconnecting w the family. I'm just going to take a deep breath, sit back & relax & listen to things coming my way."

    Whaley said that he got a note from Jim Tressel after he was fired by #Bills that said: "Next chapter will be the best chapter."

    @mikerodak

    Doug Whaley has been “reconnecting with his family” since being fired by the Bills. He says he is considering opportunities outside football

    @SiriusXMNF

    Whaley on Sean McDermott: He will have them in position to win a lot of football games. The Buffalo #Bills wont be beating themselves.

    Lesson learned.

  11. With respect to the highlighted segment one side was going down and the other side was not moving up. It was repeatedly reported that TT had to accept a lower deal in order to remain with the team. If Whaley had the authority and he didn't, he would have simply cut him.

    As far as dismissing the reality of the business world where agents (technically illegal but tacitly accepted practice) make inquiries into what the market has to offer I say this respectfully that you are being naive. His agents knew what his value was and was not in the market. And they knew which teams were interested or not for his services before his contract expired.

    Do you really believe that there was a team or teams interested in him as a starter and willing to abide by his original contract he would have stayed?

    John, this won't work. The true believers now take it as an article of faith that Tyrod took less money because he believed in Buffalo. Of course this would sound ridiculous if a Bear fan made the same case for Mike Glennon but here we are.

  12. I'm mostly in agreement. I'm willing to wait and see.

    For those who were/are opposed to the McDermott hire, who would you have gone with instead?

    I wanted a top X's and O's coach who could install a modern NFL offense and also was a QB guru (so that we could land our franchise QB). Kyle Shanahan and Jim Bob Cooter were the top guys for me.

    I see McDermott as a Marrone/Jauron hybrid. Marrone made the trains run on time and I expect Mcdermott will do the same. This sort of coach can work but he will need to get a very good QB. Since McDermott decided to go with Tyrod this year he is putting his entire coaching career on the line next draft in 2018. If McD and Beane do not acquire a credible QB prospect who can be a franchise guy I expect their stay in Buffalo to be very short.
