  1. The Chip Kelly situation is different from the McDermott or Carroll approach in a major way that really makes it a bad comparison. Kelly brought in his revolutionary approach that he used in the college ranks and tried to apply it without much alteration to the pro ranks. That was the major flaw with his approach. The college and pro games are much different and the approach that is successful in one environment wasn't necessarily going to be the magical solution in another environment.

Without a doubt McDermott has his own favored football philosophy with respect to the roster and organizational structure. For the most part they fall within being considered conventional approaches. His challenge is going to be upgrading the talent to fit the schemes he favors. That's the same challenges that all teams and organizations have to face.

Chip Kelly stripped his own roster of talent once he had control of the roster. That is the danger and it would play out differently in Buffalo. If Sean decided to be King and not listen to anyone else I would expect another coach draft and sticking with a veteran QB over drafting and developing one to be his downfall.

  2.

why do that. seems dirt throwing from both sides is real heavy now as it is. no, I have been really turned off by this board the last couple days and as much as I don't want it to look like I've been run off, I'm stepping away for a while. no need to be subject to the negativity that lingers heavy around here. I thought off seasons were bad enough on past boards but this place is no different.

    enjoy the off season

When I have confidence in a player or sports team it bothers me not at all if others don't agree. If the Bills are really on the verge of turning it around and YOU know that and others don't, shouldn't that make you happy? You know more than these jaded fans and soon Sean will be winning games like clockwork. Don't get why anyone would be upset if they thought their team was on the right track. All the skepticism will be gone soon if you are correct.

  3. Whenever there is a press conference introducing a new HC, GM or player in any sport there is little to be gleaned from it. The standard comments from the new employee are cliche and platitude riddled. It really isn't worth dissecting because there is little substance to evaluate.

You are treating this as a press conference for a President or Governor where answering questions might prove useful and shed some light. This is not the situation here. This GM introductory press conference is a situation where saying little of substance is said because there is actually little to say.

Correct. But there is always a chance that a nugget slips out. Low probability but I still watch anyway.

The Sabres GM had a press conference and I think I learned a bit. He was focused on pipeline between Rochester and Buffalo and player development. He also made an offhand remark about stacking assistant coaches to offset weaknesses of the head coach and I thought that sounded very smart.

  4. Guys, can we all just take it down a notch? I realize billsareback is not happy but someday the Bills could cause you to snap. If you don't care about Mahomes or Peterman comparisons there are other threads to discuss football in.

We're all Bills fans. Play nice.

Falk's mechanics are superior to Mahomes. That was why people were scared of him more than anything.

No, the Air Raid was a major question mark. As it will be for Falk. I haven't watched enough tape on Falk. We shall see.

  5.

Quote me on this. I think Luke Falk is gonna be great. Hes got the size, hes a pocket passer, and hes staying at Washington State one more year to keep working on his skills, even though he could have come out this year. If he keeps things up, he could be a top-five all time college passer.

Also you can't bash Sal as a "propaganda" carrier for the Bills; I think he does a great job covering all the facts. Someone like Chris Brown is the water carrier. Not Sal.

Its reasonable to assume that we will be taking a QB next year, based off of Beane's and McD's statements on how you have to throw the ball as much as run it.

Maybe we need a bottom-3 finish once and for all to get our man and look to the future. I am not advocating for this, however.

Ok. But he plays in the Air Raid system and that was one of the main question marks people came up with for Mahomes.

  6.

give it a season at least before making the conclusion as the whether they are a proper hc/gm combo. hell, you never know, you're just making speculation that fit your agenda.

You are welcome to do so. 17 years of no playoffs and the same mistakes over and over and I no longer blindly believe. The real games will start soon and if they make the playoffs you can throw all my skepticism back in my face.

  7.

neither of those two have even seen a regular season game yet and you're crying until they get a real gm/coach you wont have hope again?

are you going to cry the blues for the next 4 or 5 years? LOL

this where I stand although had the option been there I would of chose "cautiously optimistic" simply based on the unknown but I too see all these changes leading to a possible good future for the buffalo bills.

The word I used was a proper coach and GM search. They have not had a proper GM search in my lifetime. Can Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane work out? I have already laid out that possibility. But the process of falling in love with Sean was the same flawed process that gave us Rex Ryan.

  8.

we have a QB that has been shown to make plays. It simply was not viable to spend a 1st or 2nd on one of this year's QBs because they all had major question marks (yes, though I loved Mahomes, he had some issues). The FO is saving their chips to spend on next year's class, which is looking to have 5-6 great options.

How do you know that the plan is to draft a QB when you just stated that they passed on QB's because they had question marks. Every QB other than Elway, Luck, or Manning had question marks! These 5-6 great options, name them. Bills will not get the first QB off the board. So now who do you want?

Josh Rosen? You think he has no question marks?

Josh Allen? Even more question marks.

This idea that the Bills got an extra first to get a QB has NEVER been confirmed by the Bills organization or Sean McDermott. It was started by Sal C, #1 water carrier for Bills propaganda who came up with this idea after the draft to sell the WGR hosts who questioned the trade. They asked Sean if the trade would help get a QB and he just gave the standard, sure always nice to have more options answer.

So maybe this is the plan. It is also a secret as well as crappy plan. You don't know who will be available to you by any standard unless the plan is a bottom 3 finish.

  9. The actual GM at the time did make the call: It was McDermott. Pegula has bought into the McDermott vision and blueprint. McDermott is unquestionably running the football operation. As soon as McDermott was hired he was elevated to the top of the football operation while the then GM publicly lost his authority. The owner would not have fired the entire scouting staff unless it was what the empowered coach wanted to happen.

I'm not arguing whether it was a wise or unwise approach to take because we simply won't know right away. The front office is now staffed and structured the way McDermott wanted. The Beane hiring certainly was mostly influenced by the HC.

Structurally, before the McDermott hire there was a glaring disjointedness between the front office and the coaching staff. Whaley can't be fully blamed for that lack of cohesiveness because too often he didn't have a meaningful say in the hiring of coaches. The incompatibility within the organization was caused by the owner's HCing hires.

The advantage to this unified organizational structure is that there is more clarity and less confusion in communication between the front office and coaching staff. The scouts, front office, which includes managing the cap, and the coaching staff are all tied together. Under this system there is more cohesion. There are also risks in such a tightly knitted system. The risk of group think instead of creative tension and challenging opinions is something to be aware of.

Great post. There are certainly ways this can work well but it comes down one man. Sean McDermott. If he wants to be a Chip Kelly coach/GM the Pegulas handed him the keys to his own destruction. If he wants to be a Pete Carroll and let his GM get the players with mild input that road is open as well. Time will tell.

  10. So you watch media interviews for an assessment of strengths and weaknesses? Wow just wow.......your bias is clouding any objectivity my friend. Need to reevaluate yourself.

No, I watch press conferences to gather information. There was no vision shared with the fans. I looked at his background and he is admin guy with limited experience in scouting.

If the Bills want to sell us on Beane that's on them. I need more than commercials with a Bills fan hitting the back of a pickup truck. If you require less good for you.

You don't watch many press conferences from sports organizations, do you?

Doh! Forgot your agenda. Please carry on with the wailing and gnashing of teeth. Continue on with your crusade.

If asking questions is a crusade then I suggest you familiarize yourself more with the English language and what words actually mean.

  11. If Russ Brandon gets fired and we conduct a real GM and coaching search I will have hope again. Right now I see an aging and deteriorating roster. The defense peaked in 2014 and the offense peaked in 2015 and the talent for both has declined steadily since those peak years.

We hired a defensive coach from the Ron Rivera/Leslie Frazier Tree. That coach ran the last draft from a board created by scouts that were then fired. The GM search ended with Sean's wrestling buddy from Carolina who doesn't have a scouting background but is more of an admin guy. They say they share a vision but that vision looks like getting players for the next year to help out the coach. The future has been not attended to again

And how will Sean the Wrestler and Brandon Beane settle disputes? Let's say Brandon wants a QB and Sean wants a LB next year in the first round. Sean McDermott, "We'll probably get that wrestling mat out." (9 minutes into video)

    http://www.buffalobills.com/video/videos/McDermott-on-Beane-First-Rookie-Minicamp/7b10fe63-9217-4da9-baa7-102207d2fd24

  12. Jeff already knows that McDermott will fail, before he's coached his first game; Jeff says he missed on a quarterback. Jeff also knows that Tyrod is no good and can never improve, and that Peterman and Cardale Jones suck. We might as well not even watch the Bills this year.

He has a chance to succeed. He needs to get a QB. He needs to let Beane provide input and not be a McDictator. He needs to get a QB scout in here to start getting ready for 2018 draft. If he does these things I think he can make it.

If he rides Tyrod for 2 years he will suffer the same fate as Rex.

  13. EJ Manuel is gonna end up costing this team a handful of franchise guys before all is said and done.

The problem the Bills have now is they empowered a defensive coach as GM. Who is going to tell Sean no when he wants to fill needs again next year because he is on the hot seat and needs to keep his job? Bills always in win now mode which is why our future never arrived.

  14. Mahomes didn't create a trick shot video. ESPN asked him to throw a football out the window while he was there.

This is a trick shot video. If Mahomes ever makes something like this then you will have a point.

Reid is the best coach in the league IMO. But he's not known for talent evalation any more than Belicheat or McDermott are.

Who would you have evaluate a QB? Brandon Beane or Sean The Wrestler?

Bills need to get a QB czar hired so they are not taken advantage of next draft.

  15. I liked him more then any other QB in this years draft , and If he works out and become a franchise QB this will look a brilliant move by the Chiefs , but what if Peterman turns out to be a great QB for the Bills ? And a steal in the 5th round I guess will find out in few years from now ,

I stated Peterman would go in the 5th round before the draft. I don't think he slipped. He went where he should have. Of course I hope he does something but that's all it is. Hope. As a prospect I see Peterman as a coach pick. Kind of like Savage in Houston. He actually made me think of a younger version of T.J. Yates. That's who I think we drafted.

  16. I watch a couple of his games , what impressed the most was his arm strength , he did made some great throws ,

But for every good throw there's 3 that just makes you scratch your head and wonder what the hell was he thinking , now not an expert by any means but IMO his mechanics and decision making is what scares me about him , maybe all that could be fixed by a great QB coach I don't know , if yes he looks like a B Fabre type ,

IMO the most impressive thing about Mahomes is his arm strength ,

Again this is just my opinion about the kid , and if Bills were going to draft a QB in the first round I was hopping it would be him , but I'm not upset at all that we didn't take him , and I'm pretty happy about having 2 first round picks for next year

He's not an easy prospect to evaluate because he is unique. What I noticed was the lightning release. That ball just comes out real fast. Very good accuracy in the pocket or on the move. And the rocket on his arm just creates a lot of stress on defenders. His pocket presence is great, he has that it quality there for me.

I think Derek Carr was a good comparable. Carr had the best arm in his class but got attacked for playing in a gimmicky, spread offense with poor mechanics. I think the mechanics is way overblown. If a QB can get the ball where he wants it to go that's the important thing. Mahomes' ability to throw off platform is a huge+ to me as NFL defenses are on you quick and you don't always have a clean pocket.

One person I talked to before the draft said he believes Mahomes will be better than Dak Prescott and Derek Carr.

In the NFL draft, you never get to draft perfect prospects. Waiting for the perfect QB is a bad idea because Elways come along once a generation. If you have a very good NFL prospect that you think can be a top ten NFL player you run to the podium. I hope the Bills change their ways with regards to QB play. Time to start valuing the position.

  17. we're discussing the Bills and 17 years of losing. if you can't handle go some where else

I think the next draft could be where other Bills fans break. Let's say the Bills win 5-7 games this year which is what Vegas is saying. Then the Bills have two 1st round picks. If Beane and McDermott don't secure a credible QB prospect that fans could get behind let's just say things could get VERY ugly. I know we have lost patience but this entire city could turn on the Pegulas, Russ Brandon, and McBeane.

  18. The bottom line is no one in there right mind thinks Peterman will have a better career then Mahomes. Some of us feel that Mahomes is the next great QB that will be a game changer. It's fine that you don't want to believe that. But many smart minds like Andy Reid, Sean Payton the NYG brass and many others feel this way about him. They feel he's got Brett Farve talent. What me and Jeff are saying is that it is so foolish to keep passing on QB's in the first 3 rounds of the NFL draft so we can keep drafting corners and running backs and other position players. None of what we just did in this draft will get us to a Super Bowl victory. We need a QB and the Bills traded out of the 10 spot and passed. Me and Jeff feel this is a monumental mistake. Time will tell but for those who keep gushing over what corner back or wide receiver we just drafted make me sick. Because I know none of these players will get us to a Super Bowl victory. It just keeps delaying are chance to get the franchise QB. So me and Jeff magic will be calling anyone out who supports this kind of thinking of drafting only position players during the first 3 rounds of the NFL draft.

Here is an excerpt from the letter Patrick Mahomes wrote to NFL teams. This kid eats, breathes, and sleeps football. He is a football junkie. Andy Reid has already stated Mahomes is getting better every practice. A scary thought!

In three years at Texas Tech, I learned a lot about leading an offense. So much of that has to do with earning respect in the locker room. Leaders set an example for others. I don’t expect to walk in and know everything on the first day of training camp, but I am ready to get started on that process. Right away you’ll see the type of player I am and, more important, the type of player I want to be in the huddle.

I hope the main thing you noticed when you were looking at my college stats was that I improved in every major category each season. That’s what I’m most proud of. I won’t try to predict the future, but I guarantee you that if there’s one thing I do know, it’s how to get better.

And I know that if I want to walk in and make an immediate impact, my mindset has to be that I have to continue to improve every day, every practice, every snap. I’m determined to do that.

I will not whine or complain during the process. I won’t be a distraction, on or off the field.

I will put in the hours to master your playbook. I won’t stop until I get everything right, down to the smallest detail.

I may make mistakes along the way. And I won’t win every single game I play during my career. I won’t retire with a perfect passer rating or zero career interceptions. But I’ll try as hard as anybody.

I’m ready to start the journey to a championship. And, more than anything else in the world, I’m ready to suit up and play some football. The sooner we can get to it, the better.

Just wait until you see me in the huddle. PATRICK MAHOMES II

Not sure it's a huge strength, but doesn't seem like a weakness either.

"Four years later, Beane took over as interim GM for the final 10 games after Hurney resigned. The Panthers went 6-4 while Beane held the post. More important than the record, Beane showed a knack for evaluating talent by plucking edge rusher Mario Addison from Washington’s practice squad and signing kicker Graham Gano."

"Beane had experience managing the salary cap, but hadn’t done a ton of scouting early in his career. But he started going on the road to scout college games when he was interim GM, a practice he continued after Gettleman was hired (Beane was the only in-house candidate to interview).

Beane further honed his scouting chops under Gettleman, whose affinity for film-study is as well known as his love of minivans and bagels.

Gettleman and Beane would watch video of every play from every Panthers game, as well as most of the plays of free agents Carolina was considering. Gettleman says Beane was an eager film critic.”

Also, in one of the articles after Beane was hired (can't find it now), it said that filling out his scouting staff was going to be an easy task, FWIW. But hey, I know at TBD we like to stay worried!

A kicker and Addison? I don't think Beane was brought in to be the main talent scout. His competency seems to revolve around administration. Which is fine but Beane needs to bring in top talent scouts because I don't see him that way.

He also needs to create a vision for how the team will look. So far that is a big mystery but I haven't had time to listen to every Beane interview yet.
