One of the worst teachers I ever had taught me a simple lesson on economics I never forgot. He just drew on the board what it would cost over the course of a lifetime to buy a pack of cigarettes a day. This was like 7th grade and it blew my mind. Later I started figuring things like that using the power of compounding gains, interest, etc. Of course I was open to that idea. Teaching a person that is bad at managing their money to do better is not easy, telling them they have to give up wasteful and expensive habits they are use to doesn't really work unless they are forced to make changes. But ya, schools should be teaching better economic habits, pay off your credit card every month! But with so much disinformation out there (Buy Gold!) people are still going to do dumb things with their money.
