In a televised speech from the White House, Mr. Biden embraced the proposal crafted by senators from both parties, calling it “a win for America” because it combines the “most fair, humane” changes to immigration law and “the strongest border bill this country has ever seen” at a time of record migration at the southwestern border.
“Now all indications are this won’t even make it to the Senate floor,” Mr. Biden said. “Why? A simple reason. Donald Trump. Because Donald Trump thinks this is bad for him politically.” The president added: “He’d rather weaponize the issue rather than solve it” and has leaned on Republicans to block it. “It looks like they’re caving. Frankly, they owe it to the American people to show some spine and do what they know to be right.”
