I think Byrd makes too much sense if you can get him for cheap.
He should hold no grudge since the GM and coach who let him go are gone, and his dad is here. Maybe he can turn it around.
Not a huge fan of Byrd. I think he was an average safety the capitalized at the right time. Not sure with age and injury history he has much left to give.. Theres a reason hes still unsigned.

Lets not forget it was only TT 2nd year playing really. He sat for all those years in Baltimore. This is the big year for him. I don't feel much judgement can be made until after this year. Unfortunately for him hes on his 3rd OC in 3 years. Luckily he worked his Dennison in Baltimore.
-
Yes because we knkw what TT is. Watson could be a franchise guy and im willing to gamble on that
lets just keep changing coaches and QBs every 2-3 years, that seems to work.
-
I dont get the hate for TT. He has done enough with the offense the last 2 years for them to be good enough to make the playoffs. The sole reason the Bills didnt make it is because of the defense, not because of TT.

Using your paradigm of McDermott as a power hungry, win-now coach with no vision for the future, explain trading back for a future 1st round pick.
He was comfortable moving down and setting himself up to make a big splash next year. Hes not getting fired after this year so why not stock up for the draft next year.... Its pretty simple this structure in an organization does not overwhemingly work

Coaches draft to fill immediate needs. GM's draft to create the best team using short, medium, and longer term horizons with the belief that the draft is to bring in elite talent and a patient belief in fixing weaknesses over time.
I want a GM drafting players, no more coach drafts.
Agreed, GM has a vision for Today and the future. Coach only cares about Today, and the guys that fit his skeme. GM wants football players, coach wants guys that fit. GM spend their life learning to scout and evaluate. Just like a coach spends his life drawing up plays, and coming up with the best skeme. The 2 should not be mixed/

I doubt Gase is acting as dictator down there. Thanks for the response.
Sean wants the power of a Belichick.
yea and the problem is Belichick is the exception to the rule.
-
We have seen first time head coaches like Gase and Quinn get full control over their roster.
I can't get enough of the fans acting like mcdermott is the only one who wants control of the roster that makes up the team.
Furthermore, the same people who have been complaining about the status quo around here are the ones now nervous about how mcdermott came in and DRAINED THE SWAMP
Its total control of the 53 man roster. Meaning Gase and quinn have final say over who makes the roster. The GM has say as to who he brings in, and constructs the the 90man.
-
Coaches likely don't care about players fitting a different system after they are fired.
Thats my point. The GM should be in total control of rosters, but work well with the head coach. you shouldnt draft players to fit a system. Just draft good quality football players.
-
I can tell you right now, Logically, how this is going to go. McDermott has a plan. He hired his OC And DC with the systems he feels will be successful for Buffalo. He now goes to each Coordinator and finds out the characteristics they want in the players to make THEIR SYSTEMS successful.
He then goes to the GM and says "lets get them the guys they need to make these systems successful" and that is what our new GM and scouting department does.
You know like good, successful, franchises do. I know its a shock to Bills fans to have this actually happen, but its finally going to....THANK GOD!
So you want to draft a player to specifically fit a system? Then the coach gets fired in 3years, player doesnt fit new coaches system, and then you start all over again. No you draft football players. Not guys that fit a specific system.
-
You mean as in Marv was a delegator who let his coordinators run both the offense and defense themselves and let his GM get him players just like McD wants total control and runs his defense and wants to be in the offense and demands he picks his players himself?
Exactly!! Marv let his coaches coach, and let Polian, Butler scout and bring in the Players. Marv wasn't power hungry and demanding full control. This is what happens when you dont have a president of football operations.

I'll hear the OP out. You guys couldn't look a month into the future let alone a year. Who pissed in your corn flakes?
To me it's fun to think about and I'm confident that we have a HC that is actually thinking about this too which is refreshing.
Here are some impact players that we can target in the first three rounds with our (presently) 4 picks. Thank you, KC btw.
QB - great class
Darnold
Rosen
Allen
Falk
Fitzgerald
WR - ok depth, not great
Christian Kirk TA&M
Calvin Ridley Alabama
Courtland Sutton SMU
Antonio Calaway Fla
Parris Campbell Ohio State
TE - not very deep next year
Troy Fumagalli Wisconsin
Cam Serigne Wake Forest
DeAndre Goolsby Florida
Mike Gesicki Penn State
CJ Conrad Kentucky
RB - good depth again next year
Saquon Barkley Penn State
Bo Scarborough Alabama
Nick Chubb Georgia
Derrius Guice LSU
Akrum Wadley Iowa
I know I've been slowly sipping kool aid lately but I really like how we are set up for next year and I think we can get out of cap hell relatively quickly if we want.
I'm just hoping we have a decent mind at GM and soon please.
Barkley would be a great pick. Bama runningbacks scare me Saban beats the hell out of them. good info.

How Many
You have no idea what clay may do this year he could be the best. McCoy could run for 2000 yds
So, no I do not think that they are doing any planning for 2018 as of now. They have not even started training camp yet. So don't give me they are dumping any play yet till we at least have started play the f-en season. How many 30 yr old RB are worth his salary? Dump a player a year early not a year too late. Clay isn't worth his cap, and Sammy is the toss up.
-
I mean whats the point of drafting Peterman. The Bills should worry about QB next year, or the year after that.
-
So looking ahead, and planning your roster a few years ahead. (which almost every successful organization does) is laughable. But hiring a first time HC, and giving him total power isnt?
-
Great pick up. his size, added to Holmes, Logan thomas, and Clay. Big time Red zone targets.
-
Not saying this will happend, but there is a very real chance that McCoy, Watkins, and Clay are all gone by 2018. McCoys age and cap number may get him cut. Clay hasn't been very productive but I blame the QB. Still team may find his cap number isnt worth it. Letting go Sammy would just be one of the dumbest moves in this history of the Bills organization. At this point not one of those players has a replacement on this roster. This team is in huge trouble.
-
Character wise he'd fit in perfect in Buffalo. Hard working great kid. Hope the Bills bring him in.
-
This is true based on local radio (Raleigh/Charlotte) reports and local interviews with Boston. He was a favorite of McD's to criticize. Also meant that McD knew that Boston fit the culture he wanted and could take a punch. Boston didn't seem to mind. He loved coach McD. Said he pushed him to be better.
My observation was that Boston was really hurt last year by having young corners at the beginning of the year and getting caught peeking a lot to provide help. As the season wore on -- he lost more and more field time. If the Bills claim him--I would see it as a Robert Blanton type signing with a player with more range and pop than Blanton. If he starts, it's a real sign the Bills lack talent at the position, but I think there is confidence that Hyde and Poyer will start. If the Bills claim Boston and he sees the field for about 20-30 snaps a game as a nickel/dime LB/box safety and on teams -- it's a good sign. He is a physical cover guy, relatively tall 6' 1" and stout. He can be relied upon to press a TE.
Boston attended UNC - Chapel Hill. He is from Ft. Myers...but he and Watkins went to rival High Schools. He was a stud in Chapel Hill -saw the field and contributed as a true freshman.
I wouldn't be against this...Hyde and Poyer are both more roamers than box safties--the Bills need this role to be filled.
great post, rival high schools yea kinda. Sammys squad rolled all over them. Wasn't much of a competition.
-
Wasn't going to be the starter after starting last year. usually tough to keep a guy after that. Other than that not sure.
-
um.. so, does anybody know anything worthwhile about Tre Boston?
um.. so, does anybody know anything worthwhile about Tre Boston?
Great character guy, hard working. Solid tackler struggles a little in coverage as hes not extremely athletic. Doesnt have over the top speed. Could help with depth, and play on Special teams. May be able to let the D do more with Hyde. Worth signing. Grew up playing with Sammy.
-
Depends on how much and what kind of contract structure he wants.
league min is probably all hes looking for. Being cut now not sure he can ask for much more
-
Hes good friends with Sammy. Watched him play in HS. can definitely help this team.
-
Control of the 53 man roster means that Quinn has final say on cuts and who is active on game day. Dimitroff brings in the players, drafts them, and signs FA while working with the HC. But has control of the roster up until the 53 man cut down.

If he can still play, and is fully healthy I wonder if the Bills have tried to bring him back on the cheap? Especially if hes not the starter and is only playing 20-30 snaps a game.
