  1. ok, maybe, but there's probably another equally strong argument that the sport requires year-round conditioning and diet phases or whatever nutritionists call them, i.e preseason, regular season, off season, etc. types of guidelines. It can't be start two weeks before the OTAs until January, repeat. This seems to be the kind of thing that could be researched with some accuracy. Bring a team of experts that review the former diet, strength training, warm ups, etc. etc and make a recommendation or 20.
  2. that's exactly what I'm saying. RW probably says "I'm going to say a few words, then I'll introduce Buddy" The point is more about professionalism. Simple example - Before they announced the PC, the Bills know for absolute certainty that there will a range of questions that Buddy can't (or shouldn't) answer. Solution? a handheld mic; tested, ready and waiting to be handed to RW, Brandon, Scott, or whomever. Reality, they tried to get the podium mic (or something off-camera) to Ralph, and the audio was totally distorted for almost his entire response. Maybe there's a good explanation for the mic, but the reality is that it comes across as amateur hour. Same as the Fox thing... unprofessional. Not about the mic or the past few days, it's what's happened for years...
  3. yes, talk about obtuse. While they certainly have some successes, the Bills PR is a joke most of the time. I'm sure RW is difficult to convince about how to make a splash, but Berchtold should be canned as part of a FO cleaning. The Nix PC, and this? They can do better than him.
  4. In the Cards offense, Mike Miller (former Bills) is passing OC and Grimm is OL and running game OC. Nobody else, but position coaches. Same as OC? No, but since their offense gets the job done most weekends, something is working there.
  5. He was a good HC at Green Bay until his last year, 2005, when he was fired. Five consecutive winning seasons and three divisional titles. His expertise is offense (WC). When he was the OC of the Texans in 2007, they went from 28th to 14th, without Matt Schaub. I remember he was being considered for the Bills job a couple years ago, but we ended up with DJ. I'm just asking what others think...
  6. Panthers, Bucs, and Texans aren't going to can their HCs, most likely Buffalo isn't attractive (enough). Pretty simple really.
  7. you're totally right. My guess is that they did this to help Brandon save face. He could step aside, but gain another step on the ladder. It's pretty clear that his role in football operations is greatly diminished. He has go/no go authority, but using the the coaching decision as an example, it's now up to Nix and his staff to decide who and why. In the past, he would have been in all the meetings, getting his suit wrinkled. All the GM duties? Different teams have different structures. Some are football only, no business or marketing. Many function more as a President/Football/Office Supplies kinda guy. Or some hybrid of both. There's some good books written on the job experience, but that's from the environment that person came from. I'm trying to say it's hard to really pin down all of what a GM does, since it's all over the map.
  8. maybe an owner doesn't necessarily understand what a coach does, but I agree on the whole.
  9. ok, fair enough. To me, the big change will/should be is that a true FO football guy is the one bringing the short list to RW. We haven't had quality at GM for a long time...
  10. while I realize nobody knows the real answer for sure, I'm willing to bet some serious money that most or all NFL owners get final say over the coaching hire...
  11. Along with reports that Cowher is very interested. Nothing against Patrick Moran or his unnamed source, but if you put a lot of faith in them, that's your choice. Also, he used words to the effect that "prior head coaching experience is probably an advantage, but not a prerequisite"
  12. As far as the coaching decision, I can't think of a better way to present the options to Ralph. Do your homework, narrow it down to the 3 best candidates, bring it to Ralph with your recommendations, let him interview them, and do your best to convince him to support your choice. Are you trying to insinuate that, because they didn't really do diligence on the GM choice, means picking the coach will be more of the same? Maybe, but not as a result of the process he described.
  13. ya, I was gonna say that they never, ever announced that, probably by design...
  14. 1. agreed 2. he was reporting to Ralph before and still is 3. one would think it was a decision-by-committee, with Ralph having the final say in most matters IMO, Ralph is sorta admitting that the former wasn't working and a real football GM was required.
  15. interesting, I didn't know that, thanks
  16. nice try, but Ralph said it's been his experience in life that you always need a little luck. Hard to argue with that...
  17. just guessing, but I think Ralph was only clarifying that Brandon still reports to him, not to the new GM. And while you undoubtedly know this, Brandon was never the GM; he was the Chief Operating Officer with some input and decision making that a GM would typically be responsible for.
  18. nope, I just re-watched the whole presser and Guy's name was never mentioned as the finalist. Ralph fields the question about 10:05 into it. He just said there were two internal candidates and Nix came out on top since he had a little more managerial experience.
  19. There were multiple sources stating that Guy was the finalist, but did anyone inside the Bills organization actually say that? IMO, Modrak makes more sense, not as the real GM, but someone inside you could seriously consider.
  20. After reading this article, I checked the Cardinals website, because I wasn't exactly sure of Russ Grimm's title. Turns out, he's Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line/Running game OC. There's another guy, Mike Miller (Bill's quality control/tights ends in 2004 and tight ends coach in 2005), who's the Passing game OC. I'm not suggesting that the Bills take on a structure like that, but it's an interesting way to coach a pro offense. I like him; he's paid his dues, has a no-nonsense coaching style, and would come a lot less than a Shanny.
  21. 1. He's never really dropped into coverage in college, he's being taught some of that, but u can't just throw him to the wolves. 2. With all the LB injuries, Harris will get a decent amount of PT. 3. If Fitz wins, don't plan on it, but if he gets beat up, there's a pretty good chance they'll roll the dice on Brohm this year. 4. Nelson starts now and has been starting the last two games if memory serves. He makes rookie mistakes and they don't throw to him much, but he's getting snaps. 5. This is a tough one. They paid big bucks for TO and desperately need him involved big time. Same with Lee Evans. So you spend millions on finally getting a serious 1-2 punch on WRs and then not play them to evaluate young talent? I think preseason is the best you can hope for. And IMO, there's not a chance in hell that TO comes back and plays for the Bills next year, unless nobody else wants him. If that happens, he might just retire ala Allen Iverson.
  22. I love Jackson's play, but there were several times yesterday where he ran sideways and couldn't cut inside, and was stopped for no gain.
  23. News flash: no NFL coaches, except maybe Jeff Fisher, game plan for preseason. Wait till the regular season starts before judging the preparation.
