  1. I think Hockey is such a different feel because the arena is so significantly smaller than a football stadium. I'm not sure there really is a poor seat in the Aud.
  2. I'm not a fan of the section. I simply dont enjoy the point of view. It's difficult to gain perception of separation and yardage. Personally, I think 35-50 yard line Jim Kelly Club are the best seats in the house. http://i45.tinypic.com/bef348.jpg
  3. From what i've read, it is largely due to his financial manager.
  4. I didn't mention TC practices because I don't have much knowledge of them.
  5. That's just not true. Coaches do not do as much tape evaluation as you seem to think. The entire game tape is cut and graded by Monday afternoon at the latest. Any film review of the next opponent is done by Tuesday night. When Coaches grade the game film, they are looking for missed blocking assignments, QB reads and missed targets, zone discrepancies and the overall effectiveness of the play. They are not evaluating talent. Any game film of the opposing team is done to attack inconsistencies in the opposing team. Once again, not evaluating talent. For the most part, there is not as much film preparation on the Coaches part as fans of this forum seem to think. Most coaches will tell you that their game plan remains similar throughout the season will tweaks for each opponent. You don't change players. You have the same talent, the same plays and variations of plays. You line up, you run your plays, the team that most effectively accomplishes that task wins the game. Wrong. They're hesitant to hire coaches and give them GM responsibilities is because it takes two distinct skill sets. Marv Levy was a good coach and a good motivator. He was a horrible GM. Mike Sherman was a good coach. Awful GM. Jeff Fisher was a good coach. Bad GM. It's that simple. Nearly every time a Coach was also a GM, they have failed miserably at the GM aspect. A reporter asked Chan Gailey how much impact he has on draft picks. Gailey responded that he only has input as far as telling Nix what the needs of the team are. Thats it. He's not a scout and he doesn't pretend to be. Interesting story. Thanks for sharing.
  6. ... for an internship with a team and work your way up. Some teams do hire Pro Scouting interns as a cheap way to find people to cut film. It takes a lot of time to cut and organize thousands of hours worth of film related to hundreds of players. You could then work your way up. The most likely path would be intern to pro scouting assistant to local college scout to regional scout. Hope that helps

  7. Hi Bruce. I was lucky enough to have a father that was a BLESTO scout. Therefore, I had an "in" and it was exceptionally easier road for me. My father was a talent recruiter for a small college in Detroit when he met Jack Butler, the former Steeler DB who went on to become one of the founding members of BLESTO and director of the scouting combine. My suggestion for you would be to apply...

  10. Thanks San Jose. Appreciated.

  11. Evaluating talent on a football field is A LOT different than evaluating on tape. That is the reason the Scouting Combine was formed. Because coaches wanted a way to see the players in person and on the field. This isn't rocket science. Coaches COACH. Scouts SCOUT. I know everyone wants to ignore this, but there is a reason why owners are very hesitant to let even the best coaches have a GM role as well. I'm not a very arrogant person, so I am a bit surprised that people say that I am coming off that way. My only guess is that text is harder to convey emotion than speaking to someone in person. Good post. Thank you for the information. You're right. Flinging feces leaves crap stains on your hand even if you are the victor.
  12. I'm not pissed, but it is insulting. I'm not a liar. That's tough to say, because I worked mainly with the Bears, Eagles, and Lions. And it was the mid 70's to late 80's. At that time and within those organizations, it was very similar. A media assistant cut down the film into down, distance, and situation. It was a fairly simple process, and his job started immediately after the game to have it finished by Monday afternoon for coaching review and Tuesday morning for player review. However I can't speak to what is happening now and I'm sure there has been great technical advances since my day.
  13. A film assistant chops up the game into down, distance, and situation. It's then split into groups (offensive line, WR...etc) and the players and position coach review assignments together. There is very little talent evaluation during a season. YOu have 1 or 2 days tops film review during an NFL week, Once again, there's a reason why coaches aren't GM's. I appreciate that San Jose, but I'm too old to be ridiculed and made a game of. The "I'm a GM, I'm a commissioner" game is just childish.
  14. I did receive a paycheck. I was paid as a Scout assistant, not a scout. You thought I spent 13 years of my life reviewing film for free? No, coaches are not good film evaluators. That's why there are seperate titles for scouts and coaches. That's why coaches aren't GM's. That's why owners are reluctant to give GM powers to even the best of coaches. I never said a scout is not a good evaluator.
  15. You're right; I didn't have the title. I just did all the work. I knew it was a mistake to register here. I tried to get my father to join as well but he said this exact thing would happen. To quote his favorite line, "Im only responsible for what I say, not for what you understand." Next time an NFL team makes a decision that you don't understand, remember that there is a difference between what fans think and what is actually true. As Marv Levy said, "You start listening to the fans, and you'll eventually end up sitting with them." Goodbye.
  16. Now how about Bell? He was the technically the scout. But we argue about who did the majority of the work :eyeroll: I have pictures of me, my dad, and jack butler at combines since the late 70's. Do the others?
  17. Yeah you're right, I was only a professional scout for the majority of my life. Those sports writers sure have watched more football than the hundreds of thousands of hours that I did for a living. Good one! PS, coaches are generally not good film evaluators. There's a reason why Coaches aren't also the scout and the GM for a team and why many owners are reluctant to give GM powers to even the best coaches. Until this post you thought that someone who worked in the NFL for 13 years was young and ignorant... Ok. In the NFL, among GM's and coaches, the All-Pro "honor" means jack squat. Find me a coach or GM who gives one toot about what a bunch of sports writers think and I'll write you a check for $100. Being a troll is having a different opinion than someone else? Interesting. Troll meant something much different in my day.
  18. As I was saying, ignorant fans... I have no sour grapes. At the time of the fiasco I was firmly on Peters side. However, after a few years, the Bills really did get a fair deal. Peters is playing a little above average in Philly and the Bills got a good center and didn't have to pay $60 million to a tackle that doesn't play as well as a $60 million tackle should. As far as a few people go, how many GM's have you worked with? How many years have you been a scout? Didn't think so.
  19. According to who? A fan? I'm sorry, but i'm just being honest. The majority of fans are ignorant when it comes to how Pro Football Personnel view and evaluate players. That's why Marv Levy said ""If you listen to the fans, eventually you wind up sitting next to them." And writers are just that. Fans. I assure you, from the bottom of my heart, that they don't take a 2nd look at this after placing the paper behind the toilet after their morning crap. The list is created by writers. Not talent evaluators. If they were truly excellent talent evaluators, they would be working in the NFL not for the Chicago Tribune. Jason Peters had a sub par season last year by far and Demetrius Bell, believe it or not, outplayed him. In holding penalties. In false starts. In QB pressures. And In sacks. In nearly every aspect an offensive tackle could outplay another tackle. If want to pretend that's not the case, then so be it. Just don't expect me not to call you out on it. Sorry.
