I think I mentioned the $8 hour thing a couple times. Not because they are union but because they are unskilled labor. No trade. No education. Only bashing the union element because they are making way more than the market can bare. More that any company can afford to pay and remain profitable without taxpayer handouts.

I like to be optimistic. I think a decision to tell them they are on their own will be a positive in the long run. The same should have been said to the banks but that's another debate

At sometime, there has to be a precedent established. Failure can't be rewarded just because of short term consequences. The long term goal is more important. Having corporations, unions and governments fiscally responsible. Balanced books and so on. If we keep giving in because we are afraid, the core problem still isn't resolved and we are doomed to repeat history. Like I pointed out before this isnt the first time these schmucks have been bailed out. As for all the people being out of work? I suspect some car company will have to fill the void of available cars by the collapse of the big 3. Won't that constitute the hiring of more people? Maybe not straight away but soon enough. Bottom line there is going to be short term pain but at least we will be making the hard decisions to improve in the long run.

But again, your not giving the entire story. The Carter administration gave a huge chunk of cash to both Chysler and GM. Is that not a subsidie?? How many times can you be subidized at taxpayers expense? Add on top of that there was heavy import tax on Japanese and Euro cars at that time and the Japs still figured out a way to be efficient enough to compete. Is it too much too ask our domestic guys to do that?? Or is it just easier to get bailed out every 25 years or so. How many times to help a loser? Like every other business, if they can't get their collective act together and build a better product at a decent price get out of the industry. Just like any other outfit would have to. And I do agree with the management part. Everyone in those company's are in the same boat. Everyone, including management, should take cuts.

Toyota says its total costs are around $48. The Japanese automaker has far fewer retirees and its pension and health care benefits are not as rich as those paid to UAW workers." If the UAW wants the same overpaying for unskilled labor, let them have it. Go breasts up and get a job in the real world where you are paid what your worth. Unskilled starting at about $8.00 per hour.

Not just the unions. I'm sure there's some mismanagement as well. I would have thought that Detroit would have got it's $h1t together after turning out crap during the 60s and 70s and getting owned by Japan. Guess not. But now there is no justification for the union manifesto now in the world competitive marketplace. Work less, get paid more. It's great if you can get it but be prepared for something like the current meltdown if you do get what you want. No whining.

lol your such a troll. UAW just doesn't get it. Talk about leading a sheltered existence. Look forward to some of the UAW boys f'n the man working for $9.10 hour somewhere stacking shelves. Now there's an idea. Maybe they can get together after GM goes for a $h1t and try to get jobs at Walmart. That could be a good goal for them. Get a mighty union in there and try to bring down another US industry giant. That's what their good at!
