I'd rather see a trade of our 2019 1st to move up, than to give up #22.

Me too, for cap reasons we will have to do most of our improving with the draft.  Next year, Buffalo should have the cap room to make a few splashy signings.

  2. This is the best 4-3 Linebacker draft we have seen in many year, If Buffalo can trade up and get their QB without losing the 22nd pick, then we can see them draft Vander Esch, who at 6'4" 250 is an ideal ILB for this defense.  Then come back later and draft Leonard, Baker, Jefferson, Scales or Griffin in the 3rd.  Then another in the late rounds, like Matthew Thomas or Avery...but still sign Bradham or Jones to play strong side.

If we went into the season with Milano, Vander Esch and Jones/Bradham starting and Leonard and Avery backing up, I'd feel pretty good.

The Buffalo Bills currently have $31,336,937 million in 2018 cap space. Good for 16th in the NFL. Not terrible, but not great.

Which of these moves could you see Beane end up doing? What are the chances that he does them all?

    1. Releasing QB Tyrod Taylor prior to the March signing bonus deadline would add $15.44 million to the 2018 cap (no-brainer)
    2. Releasing OG Richie Incognito would add $6.425 million to the 2018 cap.
    3. Releasing DE Jerry Hughes would add $4.6 million to the 2018 cap.
    4. Releasing RB Lesean McCoy would add $3.7 million to the 2018 cap.
    5. Releasing LB Lorenzo Alexander would add $2.85 million to the 2018 cap.
    6. Releasing OT Jordan Mills would add $1.95 million to the 2018 cap.
    7. Releasing DE Ryan Davis would add $1.225 million to the 2018 cap.
    8. Releasing OG Vlad Ducasse would add $1.02 million to the 2018 cap.

Obviously Wood is a complicated situation, but I can't help but think there's a way to eliminate his contract from the cap. If the Bills were somehow able to pull that off, that would add an additional $8.625 million to the 2018 salary cap.

If Beane somehow dumped all of these players (including managing to remove Wood's salary from the cap), that would add $45.835 million to the salary cap, more than doubling it for a grand total of $77.17 million - which would be 5th in the NFL (behind only 49ers, Browns, Colts and barely the Jets).

In addition, they could also make the following moves after June 1st:

    1. Trading OT Cordy Glenn after June 1st would add $11.25 million to the 2018 cap
    2. Releasing TE Charles Clay would add $4.5 million to the 2018 cap
    3. Releasing FB Patrick Dimarco would add $1.55 million to the 2018 cap
    4. Releasing WR Andre Holmes would add $1.2 million to the 2018 cap

That would add another $18.5 million to fill roster holes.

The questions you have to ask are:

    • Is Tyrod Taylor worth $15.44 million? I say no.
    • Is Richie Incognito worth $6.425 million? That's a tougher one - I would say no because I think they can get better value than that at the guard position, but I could go either way.
    • Is Jerry Hughes worth $4.6 million? I say yes.
    • Is Shady worth $3.7 million? I say yes, but I don't feel too strongly about it. IMO we just saw Shady's last fully healthy season.
    • Is Lorax worth $2.85 million? I'm on the fence with this one as I think his presence at defensive end could replace Shaq Lawson, in which case we could get a mid-round pick for Shaq.
    • Is Jordan Mills worth $1.95 million? I might be in the minority on this one but I say yes. He exceeded expectations in 2018.
    • Is Ryan Davis worth $1.225 million? I say definitely yes - adds very good DLine depth for relatively cheap.
    • Is Vlad Ducasse worth $1.02 million? Probably depends on the new run scheme.

    Thoughts?

Prior to Eric Wood’s retirement, I was sure Incognito was a goner.  He’s a solid/great player, but 6 million is a good chunk of change especially on a player towards the end of his career.  But, do we want to see Buffalo without Wood, Cog and maybe Glenn?

I say if we are getting a new QB, it would be unfair for him to come to Buffalo without its top 3 linemen protecting him, especially his blind side.

  4. I've been thinking about this a bunch over the last 12 hours or so, more than I should.

the benefits to staying put are...Buffalo could add a bunch of depth and potential starters, the two firsts should be at worst serviceable players in the NFL, maybe depth, maybe starters, maybe impact starters.  we just have to wait 20 picks before we can take our picks.  So Buffalo spends 29 million per year on a QB, leaving them with maybe 10-15 million (after cutting Tyrod, LORAX et cetera) remaining to sign other free agents and their draft class (five top 100 players in the draft).

or they trade 2018's two firsts, 2019's first and potentially another 2nd day pick to move up to get a player, that player will be cheaper than $29 million over the course of the next 5 years and it would allow Buffalo to fill the rest of the needs through free agency, so while the Browns are signing Kirk Cousins, Buffalo could potentially move up to their 2nd first pick,(4th overall) the browns like picks and with their moneyball ways, they might see the value in getting 3 first round picks for one.  But the Browns don't have a need at QB anymore.  So that allows just the Giants to pick ahead of Buffalo.  My concern would be, now that they don't need a QB they'll trade the 1st overall.

But, I think I am now pro trading up.

Gaines leaving doesn't necessarily scare me, but if they draft a CB with one of their first four picks I'll be kinda bummed just because we drafted one last year and I feel we have other spots that need more work.

Haha I remember after signing Mario being soo excited they might get Robert Meachum also. Whoops! haha

the cap room buffalo would save would allow them to fill two holes vs re-signing Gaines...Gaines may actually get 9 million or more a year....Buffalo could sign, 2 linebackers and a utility lineman for that amount.

I'd rather draft one at 53 and possibly bring back Bradham and Brown (or Christian Jones and/or Demario Davis) and still have room to add others.

  6. I don't believe that Gaines will be re-signed and I have a reason, I firmly believe this staff/front office has a game plan when it comes to value versus position...corner is pick value (rather use a high pick) over spending money value...and it makes sense, even when Carolina had a true shutdown corner, they let him walk and drafted two in the next draft vs spending a good portion of the cap to retain him.  That money could then be used to help improve the pass rush and linebackers.

Think about it in terms of the last 12 months, sure Gilmore had a great play in the AFC championship game, but he is making so much more than White.  If you were to ask most who played better in 2017, I think most would agree White outplayed Gilmore.  Gilmore's contract will cost Patriots in a couple of years in the same way Dareus costs Buffalo.

then take in consideration that the first round rookie salaries are pretty much set, it doesn't matter if you are a guard or a corner, but in 5 years it will.  So I expect that Buffalo will look to improve the lines/Linebackers in free agency and draft skill positions.  Then find good role players prior to camp.

    exactly!

  8. I've become increasingly pro Alex Smith, I don't want to trade up to get a prospect, nor do I want to see another year of this offense.  If Buffalo can get him for a 2nd and an additional 2019 pick (4th or 5th) I would be happy with that.

I'll assume Kyle Williams will retire, but he's welcomed back.  Release Tyrod

    priority signings

    re-sign EJ Gaines

    sign  DT Star Lotulelei

Draft a DT (Payne or Vea) and a LB (Edmunds or Smith) then draft a back up RB in the 2nd (Sony Michel) then rounds 3-7 add depth at Guard, Linebacker and Corners

after the draft sign a vet WR that hasn't found a home.

    that would be my plan

  9. rarely...only because I never have money on me, I have given gift cards...or what remains on gift cards (I keep receipts)  I've given pop tarts and other pre-packaged too, especially if they have children.  I couldn't care less what they use it for (the gift cards, if they don't have children) if they want to get a beer or something harder, who am I to judge.  All I know is I can't imagine how difficult life must be for them.

I should note, I don't give help to anyone that is aggressive, so if you are homeless and a Bills fan on this message board, please note, and I say this with peace and love, I will not give out money if you are aggressive about it.  If you come up to me in the street asking for money, I will not have my wallet with me, however if you have a nice passive sign and I have something to give, you'll have a better chance.

  10. The majority of the players in the NFL are from southern states.  It would be easier to convince them to play in Buffalo, if Buffalo had a dome, not to mention the possibility of getting a super bowl and the potential revenue for the city/area.

I’m pro-dome, I enjoy watching other teams play in the snow, but today’s game was hard to watch.
