  1. What "right" is unfettered and absolute in America? Other than rights that are not longer immediaitely relevant I can't think of one.
  2. Its a compromises we make to a decent society. If you don't want to rent units to Latinos and Blacks, of whom meet financial and criminal free critera, then don't get into the property ownership with the intention to rent business. You make a choice to abide by laws when you get into it. IF people decided the laws were that much afront to personal freedoms, the could repeal those laws- but they remain on the books because at the end of the day we're decent people and make an attempt at equalizing opportunity and making reasonable attempt to protect our under represented demographic groups.
  3. Oh man, you hire and promote based on Merit. I know some fatties at this hospital who work circles around me daily, are here before I am and after I leave, and make patient care and satisfaction their mission- the are tubby, but lavushly accomplished in their fields. Always Merit, never on outward appearances (within reason)
  4. You can still discriminate, its just socio-economic discrimination and free association. I can deny anybody who doesn't meet rent coverage ratios, or write up my rental process to target specifics groups. I don't see fari housing a thought policing. Thought policing would be the incremental slippery slope of defining things "hate speech"... those types of pushes, and you know they are coming, are what scares me. Free Speech rights protect unpopular speech- once you are able to define Hate Speech, when does it end? To me, that is thought policing. To ensure any qualified applicant can rent a property and enter into a legal contract, not as much.
  5. I photo shop all minorities out before I post anything. You can never be too careful.
  6. I just know in Colorado you have to be very careful on why you exclude a tenant from your rentals. That is why we have a very clear, very explicit selection process that we adhere to like white on rice... we have alot of Latino applpicants, so we are careful to know the laws because it can get ugly real quick. I'm actually glad Sterling storty came to light. I now know what Hispanics and Black do in our units... lol... crazy old bastard!
  7. Bingo- if the stadium is empty and merchandise collects dust, if the concessions are not being sold- all of the sudden change happens.
  8. A landlord cannot refuse to rent to a tenant, or engage in any other type of discrimination, on the basis of group characteristics specified by law that are not closely related to the landlord’s business needs.35 Race and religion are examples of group characteristics specified by law. Arbitrary discrimination on the basis of any personal characteristic such as those listed under this heading also is prohibited.36 Indeed, the California Legislature has declared that the opportunity to seek, obtain and hold housing without unlawful discrimination is a civil right.37 Under California law, it is unlawful for a landlord, managing agent, real estate broker, or salesperson to discriminate against a person or harass a person because of the person’s race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth or medical conditions related to them, as well as gender and perception of gender), sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, ancestry, familial status, source of income , or disability.39 California law also prohibits discrimination based on any of the following: A person's medical condition or mental or physical disability; or Personal characteristics, such as a person's physical appearance or sexual orientation that are not related to the responsibilities of a tenant;<a href="http://www.dca.ca.go...ml#footnote40">40 or A perception of a person's race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, ancestry, familial status, source of income, disability or medical condition, or a perception that a person is associated with another person who may have any of these characteristics http://www.dca.ca.go...imination.shtml I do however agree freedom of association is an important notion- he is free to associate with whom he pleases, however distateful we deem his choices to be.
  9. I kind of agree. I don't like the content of his conversation, but come on, there are people talk like this everyday. I don't have a family get together without my mother in law talking junk about Mexicans and Blacks, and how she want to love somewhere that is "Whiter"- in fact she has researched retirement spots that have the least minorities... classy I can't get away from my family, but people can make a statement about his comments- don't buy the merchandise, boycott the games, and if he is a businessman on the side, stop using his products and services. But the press outrage... please.... just another overblown story about some bigotted old boob.... yawn.
  10. the more I think about it, it does become and either/ or. As wages stagnate, the amout for both saving and spending shrinks. I do, however, worry more about saving versus spending in that sceanrio- Amercian have proved to be horrible at letting money sit and grow.
  11. I'd think that having industries that need employees to do stuff would be better for the poor than more assistance. We don't have enough industries that need out people to do stuff anymore, thats the issue. I'd cite Globalization, Technology and the growing % of the economy that is Finance as a good reason why so many more people are falling behind, while a slim few are exceling a hyper-pace. I don't think it was a sinister plot, it just happened as economies mature. It sure is tough to have a consumer spending economy, while at the same time an economy that leaves those spenders further and further behind.
  12. there both bad- people don't spend, the economy sucks. People spend, they're saving levels suck. Pick your poison. Which is worse, in aggregate in the end is a task for a economic researcher.
  13. there's the rub. people need to save, but the economy which is 75% cosumer spending relies on them to spend every dollar they earn, or darn near close to it. I will give the slight edge to people being stupid- no better display of outward wastefulness and spending that Christmas- but then again, the red light goes off Holiday sales suck... its a catch-22.
  14. Oh, the old new strategy direction switch... nothing like workign you all off on some effort, on to see it completed wasted when the new Head comes in an decided to go another direction. We're on our 3rd EMR in 12 years- holly wasted effort on two of them... lol
  15. We accomplish appropriate time with the Doctor, meaning no rushing (except for sme providers who are just here to collect a check) by subsidizing the Dept of Internal Medicine revenues from specialties, and the lucrative surgical department. General Internal Medicine has been a mney loser for decades here, meaning provider fail to cover their salary and benefits for the fiscal year- we have a annual primary care support agreement in place, to make sure our Internist can see patients, do research and teach of needed.... I think that is why you will see more providers shut down stand alone practices for internal med, and come to large centers where they can earn a good salary, and not have to see a pateint every 10 minutes for 20 in a 4 hour clinic session. My last annual exam was 45 minutes- I needed 20, but they were thorough and my MD had a student in tow. Where I see the most time wasted in primary care is poor triage of the original call from the patient- complex cases put into a 20 minutes spot, routine stuff put into a 40 minute spot- alot of our issues is having non-medical staff laying out the schedule of and otherwise efficeint provider. I also think the advent of EMR has done more to occupy MD time than the ACA and its reimbursements... they spend alot of time typing, less time caring... kind of ironic consirding how EMR where desimged to be more efficeint. Jesus, why do you continue to post in this thread, you're making everybody dumber by having to read this tripe- those components of an insurance plan you cited have been in place for decades, the ACA didn't all of the sudden create those utilization tactics of managed care... it simple doubled down on an innefficeint, wasteful convolued mess. Any reform plan including 3rd party insurance as its mainstay will be expensive, messy and cost more... but the ACA didn't create the problem in the first place.
  16. many of them are baseless to begin with. Its like all Tea Parties are racists. If sur emakes great articles in sensationalized media, but did in and find most of us are very much alike, and very little divides as we are led to believe. I have a friend who has a Master Degree in Comparitive literature. She reads books in their orginal language and studies the way the intepreted and translated. So yes, much is lost in that translation.
  17. The university is there, there are alot of wealthy, high educated people already there who send there kids = compaines have a nice poor of smart kids to chose from. Boulder is also tech heavy, and frankly, the location being against mountains attacks alot of people who want to be there. It would be interesteting to compare the highly attractive People's Republic of Boulder versus the Very Conseravtive "Turn out the Street Light there aint no money left" Colorado Springs which is also beautful- Boulder is highly sought, the Springs not as much. They are in the same State, so it would intersting to dig in and see why the places are so different, and if ideology has anyting to do with it. Colorado is a nice blend of Blue Cities and Red Rurals... we doing allright here....
  18. I think that is a pretty poor description. There are alot of very wealthy Liberals, ones with the big boats you describe- and there is envy in both ideologies. Where I believe the difference begins is how to fix problems. Liberals are comfortable with Central Planning, faith in Government to be able to craft comrehensive reforms to address healtcare, immigration reform etc- Liberals are also comfortable with the Government taking more money from citizens, as long as those reforms are created and implemented. Conseravtives, believe much the opposite meanig deffering to the individual and incremental approach to issues. I think you can cite Boulder CO and Detroit as places that shows the good and bad of Liberalism. You can cite Texas and Missisiippi that shows the good and bad of Conservatism. To me, this is why is importatn for Federal Government to Defer to States on anyting they are not speficially tasked to addressing- let States and localities figure out what is best.
  19. Its seems if were going to debate content, reading it might be appropriate... lol... I heard it was 700 pages... I should be done with it by 2017 at the latest....
  20. its awful. I fit that description, and I hate being underutilized. Most people would die for my job, I can't wait to leave. Nothing worse that feeling you did nothing with your day.
  21. How many people here have actually read this book?
  22. Lol, we rarely agree, but nailed this one.... What a stupid piece of imagery... Dream job, lol...
  23. Castle- we've watched a few times, like to show, just not a regular.
  24. Holy, on a role you are. I don't think one thing in that song is ironic.... But the song is about irony, is that literary irony? Or just a sad coincidence of tragic misuse if literary device meets pop music? Or just a complete misunderstanding of coincidence and happenstance?
  25. that would be an excellent example of sheer coincidence.
