This is exactly as I surmised with the Rams underestimating the market.

"The Rams took a calculated risk, choosing to franchise tag safety Lamarcus Joyner rather than receiver Sammy Watkins.

The plan was to continue to pursue Watkins with the hope that demand for his services on the free-agent market would not put him out of reach.

    The market has spoken."

Brandon Cooks is a very good player!  They had to shell out more for him (in terms of years; the per-year numbers are the same) because they failed to re-sign Watkins. They also *traded* for him, and had to give up a first to get him. That trade was done partly out of desperation (as the LA Times reported, they misjudged the exploding market for WRs this offseason) because they are built to win now and are going to have to face off against a vastly improved 49ers team this season plus a Seattle team that will pretty much always get to 9 wins given who their qb is. Anyway, two players can both be really good, you know. 62.5 percent of Watkins salary is guaranteed, and 60.4 percent of Cooks' is guaranteed. Watkins will go on the open market again at age 27 in three years, and if he produces, he will make a lot more money in five years time than Cooks makes in his five years.

    From the same LA story:

"It would have cost the Rams nearly $16 million to put the franchise tag on Watkins..."

The Rams already knew the ball park salary what a top WR was going to get paid in FA. The Rams could have slapped the franchise tag on Watkins, and paid him roughly the same he is getting paid now.

    They chose not to.

"The plan was to continue to pursue Watkins with the hope that demand for his services on the free-agent market would not put him out of reach."

It's beginning to sound like the Rams did not think Sammy was worth $16M/yr, and were hoping other teams felt the same way.

I think the Rams underestimated the money Watkins was going to get in UFA.  He set the market with his three year deal.  The Rams felt obligated to replace him with the 2018 draft clas so weak at WR, so they traded for Cooks instead knwoing they had to secure their investment at market rates with a 5 year deal that they ultimately would have given to an unproven rookie (4 years plus the option).

So what? It does not matter if Watkins' deal, or some other WR's deal, set the market. The Rams had no interest paying Watkins that amount of money. They obviously felt he was not worth it.

Apparently, they feel Cooks is worth it.

This is all the result of the money the ncaa makes on the backs of these student athletes.

Why not make the ncaa a not for profit, or better yet change their by-laws to have them divest themselves of all but a small bit of profits with the rest to go back to education and schools that need it or even charities that help students or student athletes?

The NCAA is already a non-profit organization.

As an aside, I don't understand how Sirrius and XM were allowed to merge.  There is only one Sat radio provider.  Very strange.  Hopefully some competition comes along--will keep prices down.

Don't hold your breath for any new competition, or that competition will keep prices down.

Essentially, there is not enough people interested in sat radio, and those that are, are only willing to pay up to certain amount for it.

IIRC, that's why the companies were allowed to merge. The amount of subscription revenue being generated was not viable to support both companies.

Understand, until the merger, XM never generated a profit. Not a single penny.

Sirius generated a profit for one or two quarters prior to the merger, but that revenue was propped up by the sudden spike in sales of their radios.

So our Bills are moving forward the FO has made all of the right moves this off season & during last season to put the Bills in the position for a very positive future not only at the QB position as it looks now but in the LB er & quite possibly some other positions on the team like the D line & O line .

But hereing & reading about all the great things Tyrod is doing in Cleveland if he has a super year & with the talent that they have put around him to succeed out there how many of you will be the ones that say "SEE I TOLD YOU HE WAS A GOOD QB" or "I JUST KNEW THAT IF HE HAD THE RIGHT WEAPONS HE WOULD BE GOOD" !

And how many of you will be "THAT DAM BEAN HE SHOULD HAVE KEPT TT"

I know a lot of us me included thought Tyrod was a great team mate but fell short as we all have heard 1000 times since his departure & a lot of us wish him well there as long as when he plays the Bills he stays the same as he was while he was here & doesn't make us all look foolish for which he has a ton of motivation to do just that !!

All of his new team mates are praising what he has done to this point & we all know what a huge arm he has for the deep ball but we all know what we thought are & will be his weaknesses again this year at least we hope .

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000939539/article/jarvis-landry-tyrod-taylor-has-looked-amazing

I have all the faith in the FO & the decisions they have made recently,  i for one think that AJ given the chance will be great & prove all the nay sayers wrong especially if some of the WR group steps up .

But TT can be a scary QB at times i just hope they haven't given him the players that he can develop a real good chemistry with & make us once again go DAMMIT !!

Seriously? "But hereing & reading about all the great things Tyrod is doing in Cleveland ..." has you worried?

Go look at all the QB's the Browns have had the past few years. It's a who's who of bad QB's.

Taylor is probably the only semi competent QB they had since 2010. Of course he's going to look good.

Hopefully Dabo is the coach post-Saban. He's a UA grad so maybe they can lure him away.

He does have the Dubose stink attached to him. Not sure how well that will go over with some of the older fan base and alumni.

On the flip side, he did stop Clemson from being Clemson, and won a NC title.

I actually prefer Kirby. He is more like Saban than Dabo. Dabo is too rahrah for me.

Seriously doubt Kirby will leave UGA voluntarily. He is a UGA grad.

However, if Kirby was able to build UGA into a consistent power, and then leave for the Bama job ...

I can only imagine the howling and moaning I will hear from the UGA base.

Just wondering if other 2BDers have made similar steps and can share any tips for preserving online anonymity and privacy.

Boy, are you going to be disappointed in the results.

This is an amazing run guys. Don't think we'll realize just how special until years down the road. Now if I could only get a job working for Bama life would be perfect.

Some of us don't have to wait to realize. I know now just how special this is.

Saban will go down as one of the best, if not the best, college football coach. Ever.

Saban is in a class all his own when compared to other coaches. And that's kind of a problem.

Saban warps peoples perception what a "great" head coach is.

Les Miles at LSU went 114-34 (62-28 conference), 2 NC appearances with 1 win (probably would have won the second one if it wasn't for the aberration in Tuscaloosa), and was fired.

That's insane when you consider there was no scandal or NCAA investigation attached to that firing.

How many programs out there would have given their left nut for that kind of record?

Hell, I would have been thrilled with that kind of record post Shula.

But Miles was fired, partly because he struggled to get past that "freak" in Tuscaloosa.

Enjoy the ride now, while it's still going. Because I pity the poor bastard who comes after Saban, just like I pitied the bastard that came after Bear Bryant.

Depends on the game. but I've never had any problems. The Iron Bowl may be tough. There is a Facebook group where people sell tickets and you can go to Craigslist.

I usually go to a game or two a year.

Where do you stay? I heard the hotel availability and pricing is nuts in Tuscaloosa and up I-20 towards Birmingham during home games.

I think Plan B if he can't find a fan base in Rochester is to go to Buffalo. There are a lot of Buffalo area kids at UA and I believe there is a group that watches the games.

Canada isn't too much further so that's a possibility.

I was in Nova Scotia last week and ran into a few folks wearing Alabama gear. My Roll Tides were returned with blank stares, lol.

You probably said it wrong. You were in Canada.

Up there, it's not "Roll Tide", it's "Roll Tide, eh."

My son and I are at the football camp this week. Saban yelled at his coaches lol If you've never met him he is an extremely motivated, one main goal, very detailed person.

    What position does he play?

Is he working his azz off?

    Thread title says it.

I think this is more of a testament to their belief that the AFC East will be mediocre with the Bills and Jets breaking in rookie QBs and Tannehill coming back from a serious knee injury.

Long story short: They don't have the Bills grabbing one of the Wild Cards (Titans and Chiefs) but say they could contend in 2019 when all the dead cap money comes off the books. Defense should be improved and a lot of questions on an offense which will be carried by Shady (as we all know).

Just thought this was interesting when juxtaposed with all the other experts predicting 2-14 records and #1 overall picks.

And like those other experts, are we going to hold Street & Smith accountable if the Bills don't finish at least 2nd in the ACFE?

Mea culpa for what? Prior to last year, how many times was the media right about the Bills being bad?

Yet, just like now, there were Bills fans getting their panties in knot because some person in the media predicted the Bills were going to do poorly.

How many of those fans came back with their mea culpas?

    ZERO.
