  1. I never said that he likes to be around athletes..

I actually think he enjoys the running the entire show. You saw it during draft day, you say it in the last coaching search, you see it in his weekly shows on WGR, you saw that at the end of season presser. All that goes away once he goes back to the business side of the house. Who wants to hear from any of those titles once he no longer has any role in that side of the franchise? He loses his name recognition in the media. It is these components that he loses and I do think that would be a hard pill to swallow...

With all the titles that you just mentioned, not one of them has anything to do with the coaching search.

I don't know him at all, but that has to be one hell of an ego boost to be ceded full control of the team, run it and then lose some control. You can't deny that he hasn't lost any power and isn't going to slowly lose more. Does he have more to lose than Whaley - yes seeing GM reported to him as well as the entire organization.

I am not ragging on Russ (maybe I was a little with the Dr of Marketing comment), but there are things he has done well and things that he hasn't. He is not a football guy, was elevated to that role by Ralph, it sure seemed like he enjoyed it. Now he is being moved from that role and now has less responsibilities (as a result in a big change in the business = new ownership) and loses influence accordingly.

You have to get one helluva ego boost to be given that much responsibility and even if you know that you aren't going to have full reigns when it is sold, when the time comes...it is going to be a blow to your ego...

I agree.... I would be shocked if that WASN'T true. Are we supposed to believe that Russ didn't enjoy essentially being the owner of an NFL team? What football fan wouldn't dream of that chance?

Now that he's had that it's pretty clear that he's going to a position of much less power, so that would be tough for anyone. However, I think that Russ knew that was going to happen once new owners took over anyway, and he is a true pro who will continue to work to make the franchise successful.

Given that the Pegulas pretty much went around Russ to reach out to Polian I think it's obvious that Russ is not going to be running the show with the football men reporting to him anymore

  2. I think he wanted to stay here and have a LOT more power, and thought the chances were very good that he would get it.

When it blew up on him I'll bet he was shocked and probably pretty felt like he made a huge mistake. But at that point all he could do was take the $$ and hope he could talk someone else into hiring him (thus the stories of him bashing the org. to Polian)

  3. I think Marrone was shocked that he quit.

    What do I mean?

I think he overplayed his hand. He thought he was in a position of serious power: 9-7, win in NE* (even against their JV squad), tension in front office...

The opt out was his chance to oust Whaley and get full control. I think the reports of the Pegulas willing to give him more $$ boil down to that. It wasn't money... It was POWER. St. Doug wanted Whaley out the door and he wanted full say over personnel. I think he truly believed he could get it.

After all, are you going to risk losing a coach you say you like, who Russ LOVES, and who just led you to a winning season for the first time in a DECADE? Plus, he coached the team during a snowstorm!

Marrone thought that Pegula almost HAD to give him what he wanted. The opt out was his ace. But once he played it and Pegula said "no" he was screwed.

He could not continue on here with Whaley knowing that he tried to get him canned and failed. He painted himself into a corner and ended up costing himself a good gig.

That's why he was so mad on the way out, IMO. He knows he screwed up.

  4.

What if he brings Ryan Mallet? I don't know what to think about him.

I think you're probably right. Without making some kind of political point, it seems to me that when all the coaching candidates kicking around are white guys, there's probably a really good black HC candidate people are missing out on.

Jets already did it so they could hire St. Doug whenever they want

  5. Even Greggo gave a teary eyed statement at the podium when he was fired. Then again,I don't recall Mularkey doing so when he quit. Regardless, Marrone leaves a strange legacy behind:

@ByTimGraham: When Gailey got fired, he insisted on delivering a good-bye statement and cried. Marrone bolted in the night with a $4 million check.

Notice that everyone has great things to say about Chan as a man.

Also notice that everything about St. Doug is negative

  6. I understand what the Sabres are doing but these points are debatable...

    Fair enough...

The reason I think it IS bright is that the young players they have who can't even legally order a beer are way better than advertised already (in fact they are screwing up the tank!)

But you are right... guys regress, things don't pan out sometimes. But it looks pretty good right now once they invest in some free agents to go with the kids.

  7. It's just Marrone-like to dub the win one of the "greatest in franchise history."

For starters, the team has won 14 post-season games, so the iconic Green Bay win drops to #15 at best right off the bat.

Then we can look at regular season games to clinch the division, a playoff berth, on prime time national TV, against other legendary QBs/coaches, to end streaks, etc.

I think we'd get down into the high 20's/low 30's before we even start to have a real debate.

  8. They won a game that everyone said they couldn't. They shut down a top 3 NFL QB. But you're right. It was nothing. But did they have talk about firing Marrone on that post-game show?

I did not say it was "nothing."

But calling it one of the greatest wins in franchise history is comical. The Chiefs embarrassed Brady on national TV. Teams beat good teams every year. Great players look terrible from time to time.

It doesn't matter. They wrote it off like the last 4 games were a guarantee to go 1-3 and we wouldn't compete and how GB, DEN, and NE were all Superbowl caliber teams, and we embarrassed GB. Wrong time to ask about his job security IMO.

It did seem like bad timing to talk about firing Marrone. That I agree with.

  9. Yeah, the sabres are following the highly successful Edmonton Oilers path to rebuilding a dynasty, such for a few years, get the #1 pick, Free Agents will fight to sign here cause they have a good 18-20 year old to lead them, then watch the Cups pour in.

Right now they are just as close to becoming a good team as they are being decades away from finding success. They need a bunch of kids to develop into superstars, along with winning a lottery AND convincing FAs to sign here. A pretty locker room and a multiple arena with a sports bar usually aren't major selling points to signing FAs

Good point, but the difference between the Oilers and Sabres is that the Sabres young players are already screwing up the tank by winning too much when they aren't expected to. And they are all kids still.

Meanwhile, the Oilers seemingly have the #1 pick every year and they still suck more than the Sabres, who are TRYING to suck.

The Sabres haven't been at this forever, nor are they going to be in this mode forever. They are stocked ALREADY with great young players who have no business playing as well as they are.

  10. You have to admit what kind of NFL flagship talks about firing the coach right after one of the greatest wins in Bills history? (GB) Can't that wait till Monday?

One of the greatest wins in Bills history?

    lol

Come on! That's what they WANTED us to think. It was a really nice win for them. But teams beat good teams every week. Tampa beat the Steelers IN Pittsburgh. Where is Lovie's ring?

This is a franchise that won AFL Championships, prime time games, playoff games, and went to Super Bowls.

The Green Bay game was nice and all but a regular season win against a good team does not even rank in the top 20.

  11. I totally agree. To me we have an owner that is not going to be bullied, the GM I wanted, and an opening for a new offensive minded coach and staff and still have Schwartz and our defense. So far it's been great. We lost, maybe, an old favorite who was going to just come in and advise. No great shake.

Exactly. Now it seems like those fears were true. Makes me believe even more that he held grudges. It makes a lot of stuff make a lot more sense. He wasn't a bad coach, he was a stubborn arrogant prick.

Usually the most obvious answer is the best one. Not always, but usually.

If you accept that premise, everything that happened makes total sense. Whaley and Marrone were not arguing over what to order for lunch at St. John Fisher

  12.

Newsflash: W/L records are factual. With all due respect to your opinion, weren't these fabulous Sabres spanked in front of their children on New Years Eve? Is their record not disgracefully dismal? Are the only positive reports on some historically unlikely prospects scoring 20 goals in PeeWee?

    Yes?

Then get off your baseless crusade or take this crap to a Sabres board. It's not like they had a winning record but missed the playoffs, so your hypothesis is just that -your belief, with no NHL evidence to support it.

You do understand that tanking for that #1 pick is the plan, right?

If you do, then you also realize that criticizing them based on wins when they are trying to lose is absurd.

The goal this season is to be the worst team in hockey. Sadly they are 3rd worst right now.

So I think I'll stay here.

  13. It's possible that one of the reasons Pegula didn't give into Marrone's demands was knowing that Marrone went behind Whaley's back and right to the boss. ;)

The structure, again, of any football team unless otherwise indicated by a powerful HC, is GMs hire and fire head coaches. That is one of the two main jobs of a GM. Whaley was definitely Marrone's boss.

I am pretty confident that Marrone reported directly to ownership. Part of his demands originally.

  14. Marrone did not like Whaley. He wanted control over the roster like Bellichick and Pete Carroll have. That was their problem. So Marrone showed his displeasure by asking Brandon to tell Whaley and Marrone went behind his back.

Just shows what an arrogant and oblivious jerk Marrone is, IMO

The guy has a 15-17 pro record and was .500 in college at a 2nd tier program.

Yet he carries himself like he is Lombardi and has real accomplishments. He is a legend in his own mind.

Next time one of your people leaves, you might want to call the VP in a different division before your own boss. B-)

Whaley wasn't his boss. Marrone reported directly to ownership. For most of the time he was here ownership=Russ (his biggest fan)

Thus he could trash Whaley and act like a total scumbag with little fear of retribution.
