  1. I get what he's saying to some degree, but if you have a winning team players will come.

The 90's Bills had no trouble luring players in. Back then the Patriots were so terrible that nobody wanted anything to do with them.

Boston was still Boston. Buffalo was still Buffalo. Most players want to make money and win, and everything else is a distant third.

If you have millions of dollars you can find fun things to occupy your time anywhere.

  2. And Smith was Sully's whipping boy, as well. IIRC, Bruce almost came to blows with Jerry in the locker room one time (that would have been fun to see, actually)...

Just because people in NYC or Dallas are douches (or need someone to yell "fire in the theater" to cut through the white noise of these over-stimulated media markets) doesn't mean that writing style is suited for Buffalo. The Felser's and Kelley's and other talented columnists that have come through Buffalo never had to resort to the 'lowest common denominator" approach...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a good thing, but sadly it's how a lot of the sports media operates.

There is a thread on two different Bills message boards about Sullivan's appearance on WGR this morning. That means he his doing the job he was paid to do.

There is a show on right after the WGR morning show that is dangerous to listen to while driving because it will quickly put the listener to sleep. And it's like it's not even on the air if you read fan message boards.

Sully gets the attention and gets a reaction. It's all schtick in my opinion.

  3. Well, I can see a rabid fan not liking Jerry. He's abrasive, overly critical at times, and can come off as a bit arrogant.

That said, it's not his job to make people feel good about the team. And when it comes to negative media, the Buffalo media are lapdogs compared to media in major markets like Dallas, NY, etc.

The things that are written and said about Tony Romo (who has had much more success than any recent Bills QB) would make Jerry Sullivan look like a blind homer.

I'm sure the NYC media would be forgiving of Mario Williams becoming the highest paid player in league history and so far being nothing but a constant drama queen.

  4. if they draft a QB at #8 and he turns into a Matt Ryan type guy, nobody is going to care that they (might) have been able to get him later.

Some of you act like the Bills totally control their destiny if they move down. They are not the only team in the NFL who wants a QB, and another team might love the same QB and take him high in the draft.

Who thought Locker and Ponder would go as high as they did? QBs often get drafted higher

  5. Why do I get the feeling that we'll hear "Well, you know.... we wish we could pick three guys with every pick, but we just get one" when the team ends up not taking one of those 2-3 "big timers" due to it not being "time" according to their board and they end up missing out on all of them?

People act like the Bills can just trade down and get their guy, as if there aren't a handful of other teams who might want "their guy" as well. If becomes a bidding war, and you become beholden to whatever team has the pick you are trying to trade for so that you can get your QB.

If I'm someone like the Bengals, Broncos, Texans, Steelers, etc. maybe I take slightly less to let Arizona trade with me so they can take Barkley instead of taking a little more from Buffalo. Just an example, but nothing says a team has to agree to trade with you.

That's the risk. Just take the guy at #8 and be done with it.

  6. Nix is a talent scout who is in way over his head as a GM , which is why he made it to his 70's without being offered the job anywhere else. It wasn't because he was really some genius who the entire league just missed out on until the Bills came along.

He belongs cruising the back roads in a rusty old pickup truck checking out prospects at Podunk University. No offense to Nix the man (he seems like a good guy), but he's a clown. A throwback. A caricature. He's not a serious football executive with a forward thinking plan. When I see or hear Nix I think of some combination the 1970's and the movie Waterboy.

Proof? He's been an abject failure. The roster might be one of the worst in the league. Where is all this great "talent?" Holes are everywhere. The win/loss record has been abysmal.

He has failed to address the QB position because he "had his guy" in Ryan Fitzpatrick. He failed at hiring the right coach. He drafted for a 3-4 then they switched to a 4-3. His prize free agent didn't want to play in a 3-4, now he will be playing in a 3-4.

For all the defensive "gems" he has found the defense has been a total joke.

I hope the rumors of him retiring after the draft are true. Nix is the opposite of analytics. Nix is a gut feel, voodoo, and lucky rabbit foot kind of guy.

Other than all that he's done an incredible job!

  7. ownership did not "essentially change hands." Ralph put Russ in charge of running the team for him. In other words, Russ works for Ralph as he did before, Ralph is just ALLOWING him to have full control like he did with Donahoe.

Did Tom Donahoe own the team?

  8. My biggest problem with Fitzpatrick was that his presence here kept this delusional front office from doing ANYTHING about the QB position.

Thus, I am glad he's gone so they finally have to get serious. Russell Wilson should be on this team right now, but he's not because they "had their guy."

Fitzpatrick can make some plays here and there and take you on a 4-5 game run. That's about it.

  9. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm stronger than Troupe. I don't know what I can leg press because I don't do them, but I'm sure he could do more than me.

I'm just saying that a 300+lb guy who works out ought to be able to leg press 750lbs. A pro athlete's numbers would be much higher, especially a lineman.

Still, I wish the best for the kid. I just don't see what he's doing in this video as impressive.

  10. Everyone seems to be saying that Fitzpatrick is not the QB of the future, or a franchise QB. Given that, he would have to swallow a lot of pride to take a huge pay cut and stay here as a backup.

It's kind of like being the head chef at a restaurant, then taking a massive paycut to stay on there as a line cook and have someone else come in and be the head chef.

If you're going to be a line cook anyway, just go somewhere else where there isn't the elephant in the room.

I wouldn't do it if I were him, so if he does, kudos to him.

  11. Essentially they want to ask Fitzpatrick to take a massive pay cut to be the backup here.

Would you do it if you were Fitzpatrick? the team is telling you that they are moving on, so you're going to cancel your big contract on your own volition to ride the pine for a team that just labelled you the "franchise" a year or so ago.

If I were Fitzpatrick I would call their bluff. If they cut him he can go sign with a team like Arizona where he is a new commodity and might have more of a shot.

They might as well release the man and let him continue his career somewhere else.

  12. I see no reason for Fitzpatrick to restructure.

He is done here, it's just a matter of when he gets replaced. He might not even win the competition. He might not even get a fair shot to win it. The team keeps talking about getting their franchise QB (meaning they don't have one).

Fitzpatrick sees himself as a starter in this league (whether fans agree or not). From his perspective, the Bills can pay him the $$ he feels he has earned, or they can release him and he can try to sign on with a team that gives him a realistic chance to start, like Arizona (where he has a home).

If I were Fitz I would stand pat. Why would he take a paycut to end up on the bench anyway?

From the Bills perspective, they are going to need to take a hit on the cap when they part ways. Might as well get it out of the way now in a season that looks like it's going to be a tough one. Take the medicine now and go into next year with a lot of room.
