How in hell does this draft bring "leadership" to the Bills? Which rookie will be the leader? I understand your ever present pom pom waving. After all, it is a Bills Board. That said, is there any possible thing that McDermott could do that you wouldn't swear is great?  Do you think even a little before you post about "leadership" from rather unheralded draftees?

    Geez.

Did you listen to Carter's introductory press conference?  3-year captain at Duke.

Bill, you have an axe to grind over McDermott so it's hard take much of what you say seriously.

I think it would be fair to say this draft+offseason gets us further from a super bowl

Could not disagree more.  Gone are aging/expensive players on the downsides of their careers.  The lone exception was Gabe Davis — who was clearly not a difference-maker for this team.  Spots are opening for young talent to emerge.  Young guys who got off to great starts and are poised to get even better (Bernard/Kincaid/Cook) are now leading the way.

This draft brings a lot of energy and, yes, leadership, to an established franchise that needed something new after just getting to the doorstep for the past four years.

How anyone can say that takes them farther away from a Super Bowl is beyond me.

Also, I don't want anybody telling me McDermott doesn't run the draft.

This is such an immature comment.  I don’t know where to start, junior, but I’ll try.

The GM is responsible for acquiring players.  The GM knows who the HC and coordinators are, and what type of players are best suited for their systems and the team culture.  The GM then builds the roster using that knowledge, combined with the skill of the scouting staff.

It would be dumb to simply “pick good players” (see:  Doug Whaley) without considering how they fit into the offensive and defensive systems.

    Understand now?

Explaining in a little more detail where my mind was when I said that...

We carried 9 OL on the 53 last year:

    • Dawkins, Dion
    • Brown, Spencer
    • Torrence, O'Cyrus
    • McGovern, Connor
    • Morse, Mitch
    • Bates, Ryan
    • Edwards, David
    • Anderson, Alec
    • Van Demark, Ryan

This year 7/9 OL are returning:

    Locks (5)

    • Dawkins, Dion
    • Brown, Spencer
    • Torrence, O'Cyrus
    • McGovern, Connor
    • Edwards, David

This is our presumed starting 5 OL. The only thing that could change is McGovern moving back to LG and Edwards moving back to a reserve role.

High Probability to Make Roster (2)

    • Van Demark, Ryan
    • Anderson, Alec

These guys are REALLY close to being locks in my opinion.

The Bills signed Alec Anderson as an UDFA, and he spent all of 2022 on the practice squad and the entire 2023 season on the 53. Van Demark was a Colts UDFA in 2022 but like Anderson spent 2022 on our practice squad and all of 2023 on our 53.

The Bills have invested a lot of time/resources into developing both players and I think they clearly have a leg up on the competition.

    New Veterans (3)

    • Collins, La'el
    • Clapp, Will
    • Doyle, Tommy*

Collins has some guarantees, but I don't think he's a guarantee to make the roster, although that likely gives him a leg up. I don't think Clapp has a chance to make the roster unless there is an injury at the C position. Tommy Doyle fits here because he's coming off injury, but made the roster in 2021 and 2022, likely would've made it in 2023 before a season ending injury - he's fighting an uphill battle.

    Drafted Rookies (3)

    • Van Pran-Granger, Sedrick
    • Grable, Tylan
    • Clayton, Travis

The way Beane spoke about Clayton after the draft, it seems like they've banking on him being the 17th guy on the Practice Squad. My gut tells me that Van Pran-Granger is nearly a lock for the reserve C role (I think this is possible with McGovern and Edwards being able to play G) and pundits seem to think he could end up starting for us this year. Grable is competing for a reserve T role with the likes of Collins, Doyle and Van Demark, if not he's likely another hopeful Practice Squad stash for Beane.

After walking through it I feel pretty comfortable saying we can predict who 8/9 lineman will be on the 53.

    • Dawkins, Dion
    • Brown, Spencer
    • Torrence, O'Cyrus
    • McGovern, Connor
    • Edwards, David
    • Anderson, Alec
    • Van Demark, Ryan
    • Van Pran-Granger, Sedrick

That leaves Collins, Clapp, Doyle, Grable, Clayton, Edwards, Britton and Bills competing for 1 spot.

Jordan Schultz suggested that Keaton Bills *SHOULD* make this team. I just think that it's going to be an uphill battle for any of the UDFA to break camp on the 53.

Nice breakdown.  Note that the Bills can put Clayton on the PS and he won’t count against the limit because of the international player development program.

I am rooting for Keaton Bills to make this team.  It’s just serendipitous to think of a guy wearing “Bills” on the back of a Bills jersey.

This. I remember when I used to fall for their crap too. Now it’s just the same old crap every year. While I do like some of the picks in this draft, I can’t help but feel like we are definitely rebuilding. Just sucks we’re dealing with this in the middle of having the best player that will ever wear a bills uniform. Such a waste

While I definitely fall more on your side about this draft.... every team that has an elite QB for 10-15 years has to have at leadt one reset in that time. Because other position players don't age as well as Quarterbacks. New England had reload years with Brady. They still won their division and made the playoffs because the AFC East was a disaster zone. New Orleans had three 7-9 years in a row in the middle of Brees. Green Bay missed the playoffs twice mid-Rodgers. It is inevitable.

Personally I expect the Bills to make the playoffs this year. But I don't think it is a Superbowl window year. Though as I said last night 2022 was supposed to be that for the Chiefs and their rookies all balled out and they won the Superbowl anyway.

I do believe the terms “reset” or “reload” are more appropriate than “rebuild.”  The Bills don’t have to rebuild anything; they still have a very talented roster and the most important piece in place.  I posted earlier this offseason, as players were being released and traded, that it made no sense to try and “run it back” again with the same guys who couldn’t get to the promised land.  The injection of fresh young talent and a few veteran FAs was needed.  We gave it our best shot with those guys and now it’s time to reset the standard with the next group.

The Bills should still be the AFCE favorites because they have the best QB (sorry Aaron) and best coach.  I don’t study the draft enough to have a strong opinion on anyone they selected; I’m good with trusting the guys paid to make those decisions because the Bills are obviously in good hands.

I’m very excited to see all of the competition and new energy all of these young guys will bring to training camp.  I’m not at all expecting this to be a “disappointing” or “wasted” season.

    Go Bills!

I was told this was the pick this am and they are 2 for 2 w picks thus far so I believe it. But the other story was Leggett was their guy last night and they were shocked when CAR took him.

I hoped it was BS bc everyone knows someone who knows something. I didn't want to believe he got greedy and lost his guy to make a 6th a 5th.  I spent all day hoping it was false, bc how do u LET someone jump you and THEN they take your guy?! When this was the pick I was worried it was true bc Coleman was who this person said wld be the pick.

Then, later when they said pk 2 was prob Cole Bishop I admit I had no idea who that was. When he was the 2nd pick... it made me sad that it means that story must be true. That said I was a big Leggett guy so maybe that's why it rubs me the wrong way. I'm a big in Beane I trust guy... but this means he got burned. How much it matters remains to be seen, but none the less...

This is the biggest sack of shite post I’ve ever seen.  Get lost, dude.

Suicidal radio.  They think the draft ended last night and we traded Tyreek Hill to KC.

You can make the argument to never trade with KC….it’s just loser talk especially over picks 28 and 32 my goodness.

COMPLETE loser talk.  If we don't trade they're finding another partner, and they gave Beane what he wanted.

  8. My overly simplistic analysis of Beane’s moves is that he moved down 5 spots to pick up 124.  Seems like a pretty good deal if he wasn’t sold on picking in the 1st round.  If the Bills keep their picks we’re getting two in the 2nd, a 3rd, a 4th, and then four in the 5th.

    (edited to correct remaining picks)

He traded for Diggs and got multiple all-pro seasons out of him! Gabe Davis had excellent production for a fourth (just look at fourth round receivers from the last decade and compare).

Dave beat me to it, but the truth is that Beane has never drafted a receiver higher than the 4th round so how can anyone say he can't evaluate them!

    That Shakir kid looks ok...

The team is constructed poorly.   We need grinders; tough guys that can score but also check and are capable of dropping the gloves.  We are by a mile the softest team in the league.

This isn’t the 80s.  You can have grit without needing to be a “fighting” team.

They are a long way from building a contender

No, they're not.  They should have been in the playoffs this season; the roster is loaded with young talent and the farm system is excellent.  They need structure, discipline, and the experienced leadership of someone who knows how to get them where they want to go.

If you know Brindamour isn't leaving Carolina you are hard pressed to find a better hire for this team at this time...

I’ve had this weird feeling that they were going into the top 10 for a while. I thought that when Diggs was here. If I thought it then, I can’t change now that the need is greater. I can’t shake Beane press conference when he talked about how “he would love a Ja’marr Chase but hopes to never finish bad enough to draft one.” To me, I think that he looks at it as, “swing big on a star WR” and avoid paying that giant bill for 5 years. You can allocate that savings, moving forward to pass rush or whatever. The rising cost of elite receivers makes this the right time to swing big.

Interesting.  I think the ONLY time it makes sense to make that kind of a move for a WR is if you already have a franchise QB...which of course the Bills do.  You get the stud receiver "on the cheap" for at least three years...then rinse, wash, repeat.

I think I'd be down with it.

Yeah,  ultimately I just question if a team will buy into him for any sustained period of time now because in the locker room you are what your record says you are.........and his record says "not a capable championship coach".    Fair or unfair,  young men in pro sports see things in black and white like that.   Pegula and Adams just gotta' know that coming in to avoid wasting more seasons.

I dunno…you can make an argument the Sabres could/should have won two Cups with Lindy, and his overall playoff record is over .500.  Is he an “exciting” hire around the league?  Probably not.  But I really do think he’s the perfect guy for this job at this time, and I absolutely believe players will buy in to his message.
