How can you even say you are being objective if you are not deeply concerned that we drafted the wrong QB? He leads the NFL in interceptions. 4 turnovers in 1 half. 3 picks in 1 game. Poor ball placement. Extremely poor decision making. If he doesn't get a lot better and very soon, I just hope Beane and McDermott will admit they drafted the wrong QB and try again rather than riding him down until the Pegulas have no choice but to bring in a new HC and GM. At the very least, trade for a better QB or draft another one that can compete for the starting job. We have an elite defense and a starting QB that gives the ball away like gramma hands out candy on Halloween.

I agree with your point about at least questioning whether Allen is the one to put the franchise future on. The interceptions are a concern but what's MORE of a concern to me is seeing the field, seeing open receivers, capitalizing on mistakes by the defence.

    I ask myself the question

is Allen good but reckless, needing to mature

Or is he just not THAT good?

When Josh told the media that it was "surreal" to play against Brady, it made me worry a bit. I don't know if his nerves were in the wrong place and he played poorly as a result, or if the pressure was too much for him, but that comment stuck im my head. Throughout the first half, I kept saying "ok, settle down Josh", but it never happened.

On the throw to the flat early in the game, I thought the route was supposed to be flatter, but even still, there was no one within 10 yards of Beasley. A softer toss to the same spot the ball went to gets completed.

Josh is still young. Bills fans have put a ton of pressure in him, the moment was huge, and I think it affected him mentally. He has to be able to shake that and just go out and play, while playing within the scheme and being smart.

I do think its funny how whenever things aren't going well, especially when it revolves around the QB, certain posters, that you don't see posting when things are going well or good enough to win, suddenly come out of hiding to generously share their opinions...it's like they don't know how to act or react when things are going well, as if "bad" had become so normal for them that they suddenly feel comfortable coming out of hiding. As soon as bad things happen, POOF! Every time...

I thought the comments by Allen in different pressers:

'We need to come out of the half with more juice' and 'coach McDermott does a great job of teaching us situational football'

    Were concerning.

I've seen Josh Allen go up a gear yes.

And we've all seen the meltdown.

The full context is I've seen the going up a  gear against lesser teams.

Not a criticism at all, he just plays the opposition thats there - but let's now see the Dallas TV game, next patriots game, Phillie game. Let see those and how he bounces back from the hit.

Yep. I think he would. The issue is getting him to stay in the mind set of getting it out quick. There were plays designed like that on Sunday where despite the design Josh holds it, and holds it and holds it looking for the big play. I thought there was massive improvement in that regard weeks 1 and 2 his snap to throw time was down from 3.1 seconds last year to 2.7 seconds through two weeks. His average for the season has crept back up now to 2.9 seconds which tells me he has reverted a little to holding it too long. Now give Cincy and New England some credit, their corners have played decent games against us (and are much better than the Giants and Jets corners) but it is concerning. I want to see that number come back down to that 2.7 sort of range.

Yeah that's interesting. First drive of the first game he looked great to me.

I saw something 'happen' to him in the patriots game. His game is there and then can competely unravel it seems.

I will say his biggest strength to me is his short memory. I've seen him come back from mistakes and he needs to continue to do that.

Serious response - I acknowledge the negative, but focus on the positive.  It's too easy to pick out all the negative stuff and to ride that train; especially when there have been so many positives/signs of growth and progress.

I've been critical of Josh this year, but I've also enjoyed seeing the improvements he's made.

Also ... perspective.  We're talking about a kid in his early 20s.  We're talking about a young QB with a lot of mediocre receiving options.  We didn't have Singletary or Foster on Sunday.

I'll also remind you that the Bills played the defending Super Bowl Champions; the team that has the best QB and HC of all time.

Of the four (let that sink in .... four) games this season, the only one in which Josh was legitimately BAD was vs. the Pats.

    That's what makes me confident.

What are examples of positives/signs of growth and progress for you?

I don't think he's a bust but I do believe he will never be that superstar QB you need to win a Superbowl. Maybe with a "lights out" D he can do it but his inability to see the field limits the number of big plays he'll make when under pressure.

This is it. Starting to see these open receivers he's missing and often he's not even looking on one side of the field.

I have some concerns....and have seen some regression, but that is to be expected of a young quarterback (see Baker Mayfield's first few games this year) but honestly the Cincinnati game worries more than Sunday's game.  So far this year there has been one and only one quarterback who has led a scoring drive against that Patriots defense.  Yes, they have played some crap quarterbacks...but still.  And Big Ben pre-injury had something left...and if we go back to last year, Goff and that Rams offense did nothing.  So, no, Sunday's game does not worry me much.

Cincinnati game because their defence is bad

I am not saying anyone is. I don't think Daboll is. I think he is doing a good job. I think @Nihilarian wants to baby Josh. He wants to protect him from any chance of looking bad. I think that is an outdated way to develop a young QB and, in any event, it is not the way Josh excels. Josh is at his best when the ball is in his hand and he has rhythm. He is not best in a run heavy scheme that asks him to just make the odd big throw. That isn't who he is.

Nor am I losing patience. I think Josh has to play every snap for which he is available this year and by the end of the season the Bills have to have an idea what they have. They can't hide Josh. That isn't a viable plan in 2019 and neither is it the way to get the best from this Quarterback.

Allen might be better in an uptempo offence when there's less time to 'think'.

  9. Continue to develop him but he will be judged in tough games. To judge him in the patriots game is fair.

There are posters on here that are both

    1. patient with him to play all season

    2. are also are skeptical as to whether he is a high tier QB when they see games like Sunday.

Theres a continuous judgement going on in people's minds, which admittedly is from play to play sometimes.

    For me, I need to see a 3TD game. I've seen a 3INT game.

Point being we need to see good games to back up the flashes that we DO see. Need to see ONE good statistical day to show he can be consistent in a game.

I'm viewing Allen through the lens of can he take us to the Superbowl.

I’m late to this party and there is way too much to read here from an IPhone. There is much more good than bad with Josh but I have to agree that he is doing the same stupid mistakes in each game this year and it’s really starting to becoming disturbing.

In the first half I saw something that I wasn’t prepared for and that is Josh looked different from any other time in any other game this year. I don’t know how to say it but for the lack of a better term he looked like he was either scared or intimidated or just overwhelmed, like the game was too big for him. I don’t get it because I’ve seen him so many times being brazen and in that first half yesterday he looked timid. When have you ever see him go down like a sack of potatoes like he did in that first series or 2? I’m anxious to see how he is going to respond when he gets back in the field. I have no idea what to expect but his and this team’s success is going to depend on how he responds. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he comes back from this injury better and smarter than before, like he did from last year’s injury.

This is what I saw aswell. I saw it against the Packers last year.

    Panic.

He seems to stop playing the game and plays the moment. When I think about it it may be when he plays really good quarterbacks?

Somewhat concerned, but he’s a big guy and seems pretty sturdy. He’s made a lot of big plays like that and they’re exciting. It’s a fine line, and the NFL doesn’t do a lot to protect QBs that aren’t among the anointed ones.Look at the shots Newton has been subjected to. I get it, but I also love his competitive fire and don’t want that going out of his game. I want him to hate losing, especially to NE. It’s a whole other level of hate for that team. He wasn’t running the whole time with his head down either.

Keep the fire. Just play in a way that doesnt shorten your career and leaves the bills with a void at QB.

With all the hate on Allen, where is the discussion on the coaching.  Certainly Allen is responsible for his play, but what about the coaching?  Everyone here, to include team management, knew he was a long term project with a high ceiling.  He want even supposed to play year one.  So where is the discussion on Dorsey, Dabol, and McDermott?  They share in the responsibility to coach the hero ball mentality out of him, or at least when to use it.  When they are in FG range, is someone telling Allen through the headset, Do No Take a Sack here!  Sure, he should have the situational awareness, but coaches should helping him as well.  This weekend was the first I heard of Dabol getting in his ear.  Next time, grab his face mask or something.  I still have a lot of faith in Allen, because if he and the coaches can get this figured out, he can become the franchise QB we have been waiting for.  As hard as it is in today’s NFL, we must have patience.  As someone who also followed the Chargers, Brees had a slow start as well, he didn’t really start blossoming until year 3.

Its harder to see what's going on with the coaching isn't it.

With Allen we can see what's happening or make our judgments easier. With the coaching there has to be an element of faith they are doing the right thing.

Dabolls been animated at him on the sideline in this game and the Bengals game after the INTS. Regarding the interceptions and sacks, McDermott said in today's presser (paraphrasing) that 'We have to continue to make it CLEAR what is acceptable and not'.

However, Allen did say in last week's interview that 'mcdermott does a great job of teaching us situational football'. ?

Sliding wasn’t going to get the first down. There’s a time to slide and that wasn’t it. A cheap hit doesn’t mean you don’t fight for a key first down.

I hear you but his health as the franchise QB is more important than diving head first for a first down. His coach would say the same thing.

Its symptomatic of his moment to moment thinking which can be brilliant but can also be haphazard.

Easy to say after the event but weren't you concerned he would get injured at some point? He was getting hit alot and put himself in harm's way too much. I understand the game is about 'toughness' but if you keep running head first as a QB your going to get your head smashed sooner or later.

QBs generally get better with time but the biggest question is how much better. There are a lot of factors that go into it. This is like saying Nathan Peterman can still go on to be great because Payton Manning threw a lot of interceptions his rookie year. There’s no correlation to be made here.

Yes - how much better is the question.

You will always see flashes of the IT FACTOR if it is there. Starting to doubt it with Allen but time will further tell.

  15. 2 minutes ago, LSHMEAB said:

Yeah. A little. I was never really on board to begin with, but seeing the same mistakes in year 2 is concerning. He's also going to continue to get banged up if he continues to run the way he does and that is his calling card.

If he can't become more efficient, it's just not going to happen.

Love the kid. Love his moxie. He's really grown on me as a human being. But I just don't know at this point.

Totally. Why was he running head first like a running back? I know he has running talent, I get it. Slide!! I found that more frustrating than the interceptions

Slide. You need to be there for the next play.

I fully believe the Patriots targeted Allen. I know that's a big assertion. The reason I say it is because 4-5 plays later a different player took a behind the back cheap shot at Barkley on that trick play where he didn't even have the ball. Does anyone really think the ultra disciplined Patriots would take 2 15 yard penalties on a potential game winning drive without a coaching directive? I don't. I think they said gang tackle and if you have a shot to take him out, do it. They did. I think we should just start taking our liberties with Edelman, White,  and Brady from here on out. 15 yards be damned.

Why didn't any player stand up to the player that layed the hit to Allen.
