  1. The entire week or three that preceded Kelly signing, I was cutting out newspaper articles related to the demise of the USFL and probability of Jim Kelly coming to WNY. At the time Kelly and Flutie were both QBs for the NJ Generals.

I had them all taped into a scrapbook. There was a real sense of something historic (related to Buffalo anyway) was about to happen.I should go look and see if I still have them!

I wish I still had that optimism. This franchise has worn me out. I am a fan for life, with a chip on my shoulder.

    B-)

  2. Once again, Hammers Lot is the Official location of the Two Bills Drive Annual Home Opener Tailgate (TBDAHOT), now in it's 17th year, before the game against the Jets in Week 2.

Bring your own drinks, we'll provide water/Gatorade, bring food to share.

Post any questions, comments here to be answered.

If no one has signed up to bring napkins, plates, plastic utensils, plastic cups, large garbage bags, and other non-perishable tailgate items, that would be a good choice for the out of townees who have no coolers for food or beer.

    Just a suggestion.

  3. We have had my high school friend (who has his own catering business) make BBQ chicken and salt potatoes for us in the past and it was a big hit. Who would be up for that?

I am going to be grazing anyway, so this would be perfect. I love watching other people cook for a change. :D

  4. 1. Whoa! Whoa ! Whoa ! Whoa!

    2. Lets go Buffalo !!

    3. The LODO's Gang.

    5. Classin' up the joint (And future bills WR)

    6. So drunk and blurry !

    7. Hit the can, man !

    8. Hold it down Red

In photo #1, that is me with my arm around Jay's shoulder. In front of me is my daughter (formerly aka Pebbles) and many from her husband's family.

  5. Well, I have my tickets now, thanks to a good friend.

I have not quite figured out my schedule for the tailgate, since it usually starts Saturday night, followed by a nap, followed by sunrise and moonshine at Hammer's.

I usually visit the Pinto and visit with Ken before "Pinto Ron" gets baptized with ketchup and mustard.

Then (depending on the weather) we have a post game chill out watching people sit in the Abbott Road parking lot while we have water or one last beer and maybe some food.

I am not one who suffers from paradigm paralysis, so all will be good.

  6. I will be at the Hammer's on Thursday (not sure the time).

I will probably stay over at Motel 6 and go home Friday.

I have not decided if i want to risk being on the road after midnight on what is usually a rookie night.

Current plans will change as people post their party pans here.

We could have a WNYTBDGPS meeting before noon and be in Buffalo early.

  7. Other than the obvious Music City forward pass, is there one penalty call, made correctly or not, that you most remember going against the Bills? What was the call and why is it salient to you?

I cannot give one example, but in the decade of the 1970's when the Bills played the Miami Dolphins, EVERY time a last minute, TD, INT, SACK, FG, etc. put the Bills in a situation to win, there was a yellow flag in the air that canceled it. :bag:

  8.

The art teacher was a bit shocked. First of all I'm an adult, and in school-world this doesn't happen. I explained to her that I've been a fan of other teams, and of bands, but that nothing on this planet is like being a Bills fan. I described our culture: all differences are cast aside, in favor of a single, overwhelming, unifying force. Thus, I told her that not only was this the the way Bills fans are...that it's taught from a very young age, and expected.

Yes, I drank the Kool-Aid in 1960 and there is no cure!

  9. It would be nice to get a roll call for this tailgate.

I will be there on Thursday - fairly early and will probably stay over that night to avoid the evening tailgate rookies who drive cars.

    So far it is

Pinto Ron is a "given" by default

Hammer - default because he has The Lot :D

  10. I can really empathize with the parents. We have a 4 year old and two 18 month old twins. it is really hard to take all three out somewhere by myself. Put one twin in the stroller for 5 seconds and the other one tries to bolt.

I don't know what the mom was doing, but I can see her simply losing track of the kid for 5-10 seconds and something like this happening. It also wouldn't surprise me if the kid has some issues, because most 4-year olds that I know have more sense than to try to jump into a gorilla cage.

Do you have four 18 month old children? :nana:

I have an almost four year old grandson who has quite grasped the cause/effect concept. Five seconds of inattention could put him in a bad place!

I know what you are saying and can identify with it (four children, eight grandchildren).

I used to have one child stand with a hand on the stroller in my direct sight, while I loaded the other in. I usually knew the order in which order to do this to avoid (but not prevent) a problem. It only takes a second for a child to "bolt".

  11. Hmmmm. The team hasn't made the playoffs in a decade and a half, has been a perennial doormat for the Patriots, and there is nothing definitive to indicate that we're closer now than we have been since the Music City Miracle. The Russ Brandon hope-selling machine is getting stoked up once again, ready to set new hooks into the collective mouths of Buffalo's vast array of receptive lemmings.

And the price of tickets just went up. Again.

Sorry to pee on your blossoming flower, buddy, but perhaps the title of this thread should read:

"The Positively Preposterous Proponents of Positivity."

Let's get to the playoffs once. Then, by all means, I'm on the bandwagon with everyone else.

Band wagon? What Band Wagon? You are a fan or you are not.

  12.

It is funny that I am viewed by many as a negative poster. B-)

I only snipped this for brevity. I hope to see you at the opener, and tip back a few. I like your posts because you are an equal opportunity pull no punches mofo.

    That said. Screw you!

My point? It's ok to change ones mind. Otherwise, why talk to each other? We could just play tapes of things we said 10 years ago!!! :)

    GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

<snipped your post for brevity only>

    You mean like this?

    "May 21, 1960:

WBEN radio announces that the Buffalo Bills Football Network, anchored by play by play man Van Miller, with color commentary from Ralph Hubbell, is 20 stations strong!"

  13. The next few days will be why I sometimes hate being a Bills fan-

The negative BS about to start spewing on this site and on WGR will be monumentally ugly-

    Let the negativity begin!!!!

There is always next year! :death:

Just kidding! I look forward to this season, having no expectations, except that Buffalo will play at least sixteen games.

I cannot wait until the home opener and tailgate.

I will cheer the Bills every week.

Hey, they are my team! Why waste time spewing bad vibes MONTHS before the season starts? (no did not drink the kool-aid)

I have been waiting for another championship title since the AFL days.

It's interesting (and disappointing) what this thread has devolved into, and I apologize to all for my small part in it -- I've certainly got better things to do than get into pissing contests with anonymous fans. For the record, I don't think the thread should have ever been created; I certainly don't have any problem with fans who want to analyze the goings on at OBD and give critical analysis. I also think it's clear that certain people simply don't know what it means to treat others with respect, even if you don't agree with their perspective.

Have a great weekend. Go Bills.

    this!

  14. The still shots for the show have Janis smoking and holding bottle of some type. I am as concerned with her tragically low self-esteem, promiscuity etc.. I just don't know what is going to come up. If anyone has already watched it, let me know. I would love to watch with my daughter, but there are too many red flags to jump in blindly.

This is a "must see" film for any Janis or sixties San Francisco culture and music fan. It paints a picture of an eclectic point in time. Five stars from me.

Jerry Garcia might have smoked a doob, I was not paying attention.

I did not see anything in the documentary to stop me from watching this with a "mature" 10 year old (I have 4 children and 8 grandchildren LOL). It depends on your 10 year old, and how you communicate with her. It is on the edge.

Look at what is in theaters and prime time television today that children watch!!

The movie showed Joplin's emotional insecurities, unsupported family background, extreme need to be accepted for herself, and how the booze and drugs ultimately destroyed her,

There were a few very brief / incidental "nude" images, that were not the center of the program, but they were shadowed at the strategic spots. It was anti-drug if anything and pointed out that Janis seemed happier when she briefly cleaned up. Some good insight from her peers into what drove her to be "Janis".

If anything a 10 year old might be bored. I watched some of it with my 20 year old granddaughter; she was tired and went to bed!

Superman v. Batman was more hard core than this movie.

  15. I found 2006 walk total and I added in 2016.

Thanks for the information. That helps me understand mrags post better. (as I said - no agenda)

I know that is a bitching job, only because when I was a senior at Perry High school (1970), I had class mates who had relatives and friends who were hostages during the Attica riots. It was terrible.

  17. In twelve hours, I should be about half way through the 5K MS Walk.
