Move up for a Wr or use the added cap space and package a deal for a wr looking for his first contract.  Ayuik, Higgins, Jefferson.  I do not think Beane does this randomly without something in mind. He is quite calculated.

We'd have to give up 5 years worth of 1st and 2nd round picks to get JJ

I really don't know what Beane is going to do, other than he is going to address the receiver position in a meaningful way.

I would rather not trade lots of draft capital to get one of the consensus top 3 elite guys, but I wouldn't be upset nor surprised if Beane were to do it.

Preferably, I would rather get a guy like Ladd McConkey or Javon Baker to be your high target, great route running receiver who can separate along with someone who can get deep such as Franklin, Thomas, Worthy or Mitchell.   There is enough draft capital to not have to give up the farm to get two of those guys.

The time to trade first rounders is when you're ready to contend. The time to collect high picks is when you need to rebuild off an aging roster. The bills got significantly younger this off season, without using any draft capital. They have an open window, and if they can use their first to get a legit star WR, and then use their 2nd to add a rookie WR I think that would be the ideal scenario.

I would literally give up this yeatrs 1st, next years 1st and the viking 2nd to go get DK Metcalf for example

I'm surprised by how binary this conversation is.  Most folks are either applauding the move or criticizing it.  Pro or Con.

    I'm ambivalent.

I don't like the cap ramifications.  And I want Josh to have better weapons this year than last, not worse.  With both Gabe and Diggs departing - whatever their shortcomings - we've lost a lot of receptions & yards.  I'm sure Beane has a plan to replace the lost production with Samuels being part of that plan but we can't see the whole plan yet which makes me wonder how solid it is.

On the other hand, Diggs had attitude problems, wasn't much of a deep threat anymore, didn't thrive under Brady, and, given his age, the clock was ticking on his Buffalo career anyway.

Neither happy nor sad, I'm just curious.  What's Beane going to do with limited resources to get Josh the targets he deserves?

I'm a bit more cautious about this short term because for the Bills to get better they need to replace Diggs with someone who can win downfield - no guarantee. I'm very happy long term because of how much cap this frees up. Allen is gonna be in his prime until he's like 35 at least. They have a very long window, and the way it worked with Diggs and Von they have a ton of flexibility to create a great roster around Josh

I don't mind Diggs going - it struck me he had rapidly become a problem in the locker room rather than someone who could be relied upon. But only a 2nd round pick in 2025 for him. A very poor return which does suggest a level of desperation.

you honestly thought someone was gonna toss a 1st round pick for a 31 year old WR who was showing legit signs of decline?

I think people get confused with the dead cap number. It isn't in addition to, it is instead of. Sure the dead cap number is important, but the more important number is the delta. Generally when you hear that "teams have an out" it is that the delta moves from a cap negative to a cap positive.

Because Diggs was restructured it lowered his base salary and increased his bonus money. His bonus money stays with the Bills (dead cap) and the receiving team is only on the hook for his salary. BUT!!!! His salary only counts towards the cap if he is on the roster. So if Houston doesn't want Diggs they can move on and clear his cap number fully at any time.

    The numbers work out as:

    - 2024 Diggs on the Bills: ~$28M
    - 2024 Diggs off the Bills: ~$31M
    - 2024 delta Bills Salary Cap: -$3M

    - 2025 delta Bills Salary Cap: +$25-30M-ish

    - 2024 Diggs on Houston Texans: ~$19M
    - 2025 Houston cuts Diggs : +$18.5M  (no dead money)

Financially this worked out great for Buffalo. They can trade for Higgins and extend them if they chose to

Agree. And even though Diggs sucked at the end of the year he did take attention off Shakir, Kincaid, Knox, etc.

They still need to add a starter to the WR room. But in Joe Brady's offense, I'm not sure you need a top 8 WR to succeed.

I dunno about the suggestion you don’t need an elite talent. It gets down to brass tacks right?

If Bills land say Brian Thomas Jr to replace Diggs in the depth chart and use his as a deep threat.

Across the 17 games we’ll play, how many of those corners is he going to be able to beat on deep routes? It takes pretty special talent to do that in the NFL. Scheme can help to some extent, but at some point you gotta win 1v1s in order to force the DC to scheme for you, and that’s when you start adding value to the offense

Its not the trade that is a surprise, I fully expected him to be traded next offseason.  The surprise was to do it now instead of after June 1st to reduce the cap hits given we didn't get back a draft pick in this draft.

How would waiting for June 1 reduce the cap hits? Hes not getting cut

Maddy Glab and I are relieved that we no longer have him around forcing us to “like him.” It felt kinda dirty after a while.

All great NFL WRs are completely bonkers and head cases.  Love Diggs he was tremendous for this franchise

Let's see what happens in the draft or even with further trades. I'm not currently concerned. He was less vital with Joe Brady. Shakir is emerging (but no he'll never be a dominant #1), Kincaid is going to be really good, and there is extra draft ammunition to move way up if we want.

Bills absolutely need someone to win deep routes.  But they didn’t have that with Diggs.

They have 3 guys who can win routes underneath and intermediate now

It was already looking like a proper rebuild, but I think the fans were in denial. Now there’s no hiding it. Unless Beane has something up his sleeve - like flipping this pick for some other vet WR1, Josh Allen will be throwing to a bunch of rooks and jags this year.

You don’t think Beane has plans to get better?

It’s not a bad trade given his age and contract - it was a bad contract given his age and antics.

Come on now the bills won like 25 games with Diggs and won playoff games each of the last few seasons, and were one of the best teams in the league each season of the extension.  That contract absolutely paid off for Buffalo

How does Greg know all the financial details when they havent come out yet?

    Because it’s formulaic.

Texans own salary and bonuses not yet paid. The bills own any bonuses prorated through the life of the contact

Higgins, Ayiuk and D. Adams would be the available trade targets. Appears this off season Beane is looking to start phase 2 of the Josh era and getting younger which would cross off Adams (and his large contract). I don't see Cinci trading Higgins to the Bills or any other AFC contender but could be a FA target next year. Ayiuk was rumored to be offered to Jax for #17 and Z Jones... He will need an extension but that can massaged to fit this year. Ayiuk would be the target if Beane is looking for an immediate trade.

Offer Cinncy a 1st and the new 2nd they probably take that trade. But the question is if Higgins wants to extend with Buffalo

Good point. That squares with the Athletic's take after last season, which was that with no deep threat (Gabe Davis was a cartoon figure), teams rolled up on the short and intermediate routes, leaving the Bills with no option but to wait for the deep shot once or twice a game, which (late in the season/playoffs) Allen overthrew twice and Diggs dropped once.

The bills had the most grindiest offense in the NFL other than KC and yet Allen still put up borderline MVP number. Now imagine if defenses have to defend the entire field.

The only way this goes badly for the Bills is:

    A) the bills don’t add a deep threat

    B) Bills add a deep threat and said player is either injured or ineffective

I like the move. Diggs all but disappeared in the last 8 games and he has not been a factor in the playoffs. The Bills unload his salary cap hit and can empahsize a youth movement.  I get the Idea that Brady just was not a Diggs fan.

IMO the Bills made a very good move here.

The thing that bothered me about Diggs was how he’d take himself off the field on 3rd downs

We'll have to see how all the numbers shake out in the long run. Texans could absolutely take on his bonus and most of his cap if they so choose. Most of the time teams dont, but it does happen. It's more a voluntary, sweeten the deal thing.

What bonus? The bills already paid his signing bonus, and they paid his 23 roster bonus. He doesn’t have any further bonus money left that’s not been prorated
