As I've said before, I think Brandon Beane is easily a Top 5-10 General Manager in the NFL.
But for someone who's nickname is "big baller," his drafts have become extremely conservative and predictable.
That's why so many fans are frustrated. The franchise literally lost a half-dozen guys who were All-Pro talents in previous seasons. But instead of shooting for the stars and trying to land a big-time IMPACT player, Beane was comfortable just filling out the roster with solid and safe players.
At this point, it feels like Beane's drafts are mostly on auto-pilot. He knows what kind of players fit Sean McDermott's defensive system. He knows what kind of character traits fit this locker room. He doesn't like taking guys with injury risks, and prioritizes versatility/special teams ability. He is willing to move around the board 4-5 spots, but tries to avoid parting with any picks 4th Round or earlier.
- Rounds 1-2 he addresses the Bills two biggest needs. Every single time.
- Rounds 3-5 he fills out depth on the roster at positions still needing bodies.
- By the last few rounds, we are usually out of fillable roster spots and he's ready to go home.
.....isn't this what teams are SUPPOSED to do?

The disrespect to Shorter in this thread is something else. He was Richardson's go to target at Florida. Shakir-like in his ability to convert big 3rd downs. Big frame guy with 4.5 speed, not unlike Coleman. Shorter was the #1 receiver coming out of high school. His big question mark is can he stay healthy. Played through or missed time with injuries every season in college. Wouldn't count on him just being a throw away prospect.
Coleman wasn't my preference at receiver but all reports say he was Josh's choice at receiver so nothing else really needs to be said about the pick. I'm sure most people have seen the graphic of his 40 time paired with all of his other drill times, in which he was at the top of the charts in most of them. Not everyone is a sprinter. I'd rather have the guy that's quick out of his break at the top of a route than a guy who's quick out of the blocks.
It's also something to note, all the small fast guys in Buffalo haven't worked out. McKenzie was the most notable and he was a gadget guy.
Coleman, Davis and Pran-Granger all have a physicality to their game and I think that was the underlying theme of this draft on offense. Get tougher. Get more physical. Your star QB can't be the only guy willing to hurdle or stiff arm a guy for a first down.
Shortest big problem coming into college was that he didn’t really know how to play football, and almost no natural instinct for the position. An elite athlete that needed a lot of time and was still fairly rudimentary when he came out

Ironically he was ready to play at UB until he almost single handedly won the Pennsylvania State Title game and got the late offer from PSU. Love Hardy… great kid, super competitor. Was overshadowed by others (Joey Porter Jr, Kalen King was a pre-season all American, etc) but outplayed them all.
Agree here other than JPJ, who I think should have gone in the teens last draft

He was excellent in coverage at PSU btw

I guess my thing is that Josh’s most successful season (2020) was with Cole Beasley playing at his best. We had the chance to duplicate that with McConkey and we didn’t do it.
yea that's not who Ladd profiles as.

there is never going to be an NFL draft that checks all the boxes for every fan. We all want to Win a super bowl. The variables needed to get there are the Rub.
I've been reading Logic for years and the fact he is very MEH about this draft does concern me. Pine Barrens Mafia one of the most negative voices. I would love to see some crow eating after the coming season which would mean they were wrong. There is zero shame in that. That crow will taste DELICIOUS mateys 🙂
I guess I'm also a person who just wants my team to consistently contend. Maybe it's because I started rooting for the Bills in the early 80s, and thus spent my formative 20s in the midst of the drought and having the Rob Johnson/Dough Flutie Bills be the best teams since the SB years.
At this point, I think coaching and GMs job is just to keep your roster contending for a championship, and anything after that is basically a crapshoot that's gonna come down to super specific matchups, luck, and the occasional transcendent talent coming through.
This draft, the cap manuevers, and increased top 5 round picks, will keep the bills contending for another 5+ years, and that's all, I, as a fan, can ask for

We've seen his FSU highlites, so just conentrate here on the MSU highlites, where he's playing against some really good competition with a very average QB.
Keon, insspite of geing a 4.5 - 4.6 guy, show the ability to win deep (explosive) and the ability to make guys miss and create space (YAC).
Like people get too caught up in just the 40. This kid gets to speed FAST, he's got incredible body control, and can win you 40 yards on any given play against multiple coverage.
In football, the reason you want explosive, is you effect the coverage and forces scheme to put extra resources so you can't take your top off. Keon Coleman, with ihs size, elite hands, body control, acceleration, foot quickness is going to create deep seperation, and thus eventually DCs WILL eventually shade coverage deep on him

I wish some putative journalist would ask Beane about that point blank, but I'm sure he'd just say the board worked out a certain way, and they had to adapt.
is explosive a single metric judgement now?

It was an overall solid draft but I’m very very disappointed after all the talk of being “explosive” and then drafting no one who fits that mold
Literally Keon Coleman

I don't think Bishop starting is a given. In 2 WR sets I’m not sure Coleman is on the field either.
Well nothing is a given, but I'd give 60-40 probability that Bishop is a WK1 starter and I'd also predict that Keon actually leads the Bills in WR snaps

Who are the two starters?
Coleman and the kid from Utah
EDIT
Cole Bishop

After all is said and done at this time, the offense is far worse on paper than last year. The WR group is bottom 10 at best.
I doubt Brady signed up for this BS.
All we can do is hope that Beane makes a move for a veteran.
Right now as constructed this team is not beating the Jets D and probably can't keep up with the Dolphins offense.
So sad...
Last year the Bills WR didn't have a single guy who could run faster than a 4.5 other than Shakir, who didn't even break out till last 1/3 of the season. They had exactly ONE Wr who could win on the perimeter, and he was a dude that didn't have either the body control nor speed to beat shaded coverage beat - the only way Davis was effective as a deep threat was when he was isolated. Defenses did not have to worry about anyone else deep, because pretty much any corner could cover Diggs, beyond 15 yards.
This season, teams will have to accoutn for the pure speed of Samuel, Keon Coleman's deep ball ability as a bigger, elite body control, quick WR - he's basically a more athletic version of Gabe Davis, and then deal with what's likely a really good WR in Shakir who seemingly can be effective in all route concepts - a poor man's version of Cooper Kupp. Add to that 2 damn good TEs and a really good back out of the backfield.
It may not look like it, but this offense absolutely upgraded in WR this offseason because of the added speed and versaility

Trading up for one of the big three WRs -- which Beane said he didn't try to do -- would've done it.
Failing that, as I said, collecting quantity instead of quality might've accomplished that. Giving greater priority to surrounding Allen with multiple skillsets at wide receiver.
When I look at the Bills' WR corps as it stands right now, it's hard not to feel like it's one of the least inspiring groups in the league. That's funny, because I'm guessing this is going to be the Bills best pass attack since his early breakout games
1 minute ago, Pine Barrens Mafia said:And the shame is this, IMO:
1) They knew it would be but
2) They don't want to admit it publicly AND
3) They wasted an opportunity to make this team much stronger by taking more drastic action this year
WHAT OPPORTUNITY ARE YOU REFERRING TO?!!
If Keon Coleman ran a 4.55 in the combine, how y'all feel about him? Be truthful

Josh Allen won't sign an extension because Beane got him exactly what he desired?

The Bills got 2 instant starters, 2 heavy rotation guys, and potentially 2 depth + ST starters in this draft, and people are whining

I believe that. I don't think Mcdermott wants a "josh Allen". He is dead set on run the ball, play good D and maybe control the clock. It makes me wonder how much longer Allen is going to put up with it.
This is liteally the opposite of both McDermott's stated offensive preference, and reality of the McDermott era

Looks like our punt returner, backup slot, and outside CB3/4 out the gate.
From the 4-5 min highlight video I watched, seems he can tackle, blitz, boxes out and uses the sideline well, and is electric returning INTs and punts.think he's just too small to play on the perimeter where he'd get sealed on the sideline by bigger WRs.
You want this kid covering in space where he can't get boxed out, and can use his speed and quickness. He'll be Cam Lewis' primary competition to make the roster I think
-
I've followed this kid as a lightly recruited 3* kid out of Pittsburgh who Franklin wanted but no one else really did (PSU was his only P5 offer), to turning himself into one of the best slot corners in the Big 10. Kid can fly, very good in coverage, and is gonna be a great teammate. Pure fighter.
