  1. Creative, yes. Funny, OK. Intellectual? In a college senior English Lit kind of way, maybe. Certainly overwrought and dramatic--especially with the "and I shall never respond to you again!" finish.

I like the "capable of little" part. Talk about pretention!

Anyway, in reference to the Wash Post article, here are two telling points that illustrate the press's position:

Really? The reading public who just witnessed this woman's devestation needed an inside witness to chronicle it for them? To describe the woman as devestated, crying even (hopefully)?

See? It's all about getting a sound bite--anything---attatched to the byline and to press as quickly as possible.

Don't misunderstand. I was not commenting on the quality of the entire post, nor was I taking his side or giving him credit for insulting you. I was simply giving recognition for a fairly decent insult. It wasn't the most creative, or the funniest, or the most intellectual; however it did have elements of each. Sort of like olympic scoring - good dismount, nice double back-flip, but didn't quite stick the landing: I give him a 7.8

  2.

you are an egotistical, pretentious wannabe know-it-all, capable of little, but yet somehow supported by a truly Jupiter Planet-sized over-inflated gene of self-righteous stubborness that could well be spotted in far-flung galaxies seen as a mere glimmer of light by only the likes of the hubble telescope.

Creative, intellectual, funny...Truly a nicely constructed insult. Well done

  3. I hope Spiller can be an every down back but barring chris johnson who spiller is built very much like, sanders, faulk and thomas were all more compact guys who played at around 200 or more pounds they didn't have the same build as spiller he is much slighter than those guys. Chris Johnson up to this point hasn't gotten injured but he has been in the league i think three years the other guy's had long, durable, productive careers!

I don't disagree. My point was that a running back doesn't have to have the ability to punish tacklers to be an every down back. The examples I gave were not to imply that CJ Spiller would be as successful as any of them (only time will tell) or that he compared to any of them in terms of build, running style, or other qualities - only that they were examples of every down backs who didn't have punishing running styles.

  4. Spiller is not an every down back. You cannot compare CJ Spiller to the likes of Ryan Matthews, Jamal Lewis, Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson, Adrian Peterson and Darren McFadden. Those are every down backs who can punish tacklers. Spiller cannot do that...he is more in the mold of Reggie Bush, who I think he'll resemble the most...which doesnt say much.

Lynch SHOULD BE the starter on this team. He would be a Top-10 RB in the NFL if he were given some carries once in a while...and dont talk about him dancing too much, did you see Spiller last week auditioning for Dancing With The Stars???

Jahvid Best will probably end up being on par with, or better than...CJ Spiller.

I disagree - somewhat. Ideally, I would like a back that has speed, elusiveness, size, and power; however, it is rare to find running backs that have all of those qualities. While I agree with your assessment that the running backs you named (for the most part) do have the ability to punish tacklers - I don't agree that lacking that ability necessarily means a player can't be an "every down" back. There are plenty of examples of running backs (i.e.; Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas, Marshall Faulk, etc., etc., on up to Chris Johnson) who were every down backs that would never be described as punishing runners - but, rather, relied on quickness, elusiveness, incredible vision, speed, and/or other skills. Whether, CJ Spiller can be that every down back remains to be seen, but, I haven't seen anything yet that would lead me to believe he couldn't be.

  5. I will listen to it later tonight. But if Sully really did say the Bills should CUT Lynch, then he is a clueless moron. There are teams trying to trade for Lynch right now. Why would you cut a guy instead of getting something in trade?

Just listened to it. Wish I hadn't. I had forgotten that his ability to intelligently articulate any position verbally is even worse than his ability to do so in writing. Painful. I didn't have a problem with his opinions (He did say he would cut Lynch), as that's what they were: opinions. It was the arrogant, condescending, almost adolescent(as demeaning as that is to adolescents everywhere) way in which he expressed them.

  6. i detest the pats. However, this year the jets have been getting so much attention that they have climbed really high on my dislike list.

having said that, i still prefer the pats to lose. LOVED THE RAVENS IN WEEK 1. they gave the jets a well deserved @ kick!

    how about you guys?

i vote for a jets win!

For this season, I am suspending my intense dislike for the Patriots and the Dolphins - and any other team for that matter - when they play the Jets. I would like nothing more than to see Rex Ryan's self-centered, self-absorbed, indulgent, pompous, delusional little world implode...

That would make me smile

  7. Clinton Portis "she's gonna want somebody" :

    NFL Scolds Portis:

i think the locker room should be CLOSED to ALL reporters...men and women.

there should be media access in a seperate area.

Agreed. Hard to believe it still is the way it is.

Aside from that - is it just me, or does anyone else get the impression that the combined IQs of Ines Sainz and Clinton Portis barely reach room temperature?

  8. A lot of posters on this board get a "woody" bashing Kelsay all the time.

Kelsay is no pro bowler. But, he's no slouch either. Maybe it's because he doesn't have a lot of sacks. Can you name more than a handful of LDEs that do?

OK, he's not the perfect DE. But, the fact is he's still a starter for the Bills. He's started for 7 seasons at LDE and missed only 2 games... How many starting DEs can say that? He's on his 4th GM and his 4th head coach, and he's still standing and starting. Are 4 Gms and 4 HCs totally stupid and the bashers smart? Now, Kelsay, in his 8th season is asked to convert to OLB in a 3-4 defense after playing his entire at DE career in a 4-3, and welcomes the challenge.

This just in folks, Kelsay is not what's wrong with the Bills. The Bills defense is not what is wrong with the Bills. The special teams are not what is wrong with the Bills. The Bills offense is the single biggest problem the Bills have... in particular, the QB and OTs, in that order.

So... if you want to bash a Bills player, why would you pick on Kelsay? There are at least 20 players other than Kelsay that you could shred.

4 GMs and 4 Coaches have liked Kelsay's body of work and his peers elected him captain again. That's fact. Do you think they're all stupid?

Personally, I like Kelsay...My wife makes me bash him

    Just for the woody

  9. http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2010/9/14/1686949/bills-run-defense-didnt-break#storyjump

"Buffalo's rushing defense held Brown to 65 yards and Williams to 62. The combined 127 yards is twelve over what each back gained individually against the Bills in a single game a season ago. Yes, they gave up over 100 yards on the ground, but as a team, the Dolphins were held to 3.7 yards per rush."

That's a good improvement. Last year, the Dolphins and Jets ran all over the defense.

"When the Dolphins got the ball with less than two minutes left, the Bills' run defense forced them to go three and out, giving the offense one more chance. That alone should show you the difference between last year's unit and this year's. At least it was a chance."

I know it's only one game game, but so far so good with the new strength & conditioning program. If this was last year, the defense would have let one of the Dolphins RB's break loose for a long rushing TD on one of those final drives.

You're right. Amid all the doom and gloom there are some positives with this team. I posted this in another thread but it directly relates to your popint. The overall defense and the definsive line and linebackers in particular played better than I had seen in awhile. The D-line and linebackers finished 2009 ranked 30th against the run and allowed 4.7 yards per carry. The Dolphins are a pretty good rushing team, finishing 2009 ranked 4th in rushing and averaged 4.4 ypc (and also averaged over 200 yds per game aginst the Bills). In this game, the Fins ran the ball 36 times for 132 yds for a 3.7 average - which, alone is a great improvement. Looking at it a little more closely, the Fins had only 3 runs greater than 8 yards (17, 11, and 10). Take away those three runs and they gained 94 yards on their other 33 carries for a 2.8 yards per carry average. I’d say a damn good job and a hell of an improvement from last year. They didn’t generate a great deal of pressure, but when the game was on the line in the second half they picked it up – as Henne went 8-18 for 54 yards and was sacked twice and hurried a number of other times. In addition, while the linebackers had some coverage issues (as to be expected) they didn't exactly get eaten alive (we'll see how they do against Rodgers and Brady - but the assessment is for this game). Overall, the defense gave up a more than respectable 296 total yards. Considering they were on the field for almost 37 minutes and faced 73 plays – and gave up only 4.1 yds per play (and only 5 out of 73 plays greater than 10 yards – 21, 17, 16, 13, and 11) – I’d say pretty damn impressive. They didn't force any turnovers but it wasn't like they had a difficult time getting off the field either. I'd like to see them get their 3rd down conversion rate under 30% and they gave up 70 and 53 yard drives early in the game - but Miami had the ball eleven times and their other nine drives went for 21, 15, 2, 12, 3, 20, 54, 31, and 9. What I especially liked was that there were no 9 - 10 minute 70 yard drives late in the game that we have grown accustomed to over the last few years. This defense actually looked stronger as the game went on against a very physical running team. Again, impressive.

  10. Grades by position for the season opening loss to Miami:

    Quarterbacks

Trent made some good throws during the no-huddle scoring drive. Outside of that, his play was a joke. All the things we disliked about Captain Checkdown returned, with the final seconds of the game serving as a perfect example of everything that is wrong with Edwards. Bench him now, the team will never be good with this guy at the helm.

    Grade: F

    Running Backs

Jackson and Lynch did nothing, and Spiller did less than nothing in his disappointing debut. The fact that few running plays were called didn't help, but even still no one in this group could break one and make a play all game. There is some talent in this group, but they didn't show it today.

    Grade: D

    Offensive Line

Terrible. One of the worst lines in the NFL. The tackle play was so horrific it's astounding that a team could even attempt to enter an NFL season with this kind of talent. I guess that's what happens when you go years on end without spending a high draft pick on a tackle, and let the one diamond in the rough you found go to another team.

    Grade: F

    Wide Receivers

No big plays, very little production. Hard to gauge since Trent refused to throw the ball most of the time. When Roscoe ran uncovered straight into the end zone, he at least caught the ball, so that's good I suppose.

    Grade: D

    Tight Ends

Did any tight ends even play in this game?

    Grade: F

    Cornerbacks

Surprisingly good play all the way around. Florence played like a man with something to prove, and even McKelvin (who I usually pick on) played very well. Kept Marshall in check throughout. Clearly the best unit on the field today for the Bills.

    Grade: A

    Safeties

No big plays really, and had to clean up the running game mess left by the linebackers on more than one occassion. Was hoping Byrd would get his name mentioned a single time. Not much to love or hate either way.

    Grade: C

    Linebackers

I knew they would be bad, but they are even worse than I could have imagined. Putting lineman like Kelsay and Ellis in space is painfully awkward to watch. No talent whatsoever. Big shocker that Poz was hurt.

    Grade: F

    Defensive Line

No one was a disruptive force, but no one was a clear and obvious liability. No sacks, no forced fumbles, no big plays, just a bunch of weak tackles downfield.

    Grade: D

    Special Teams

Moorman didn't punt particularly well, Roscoe had one decent return, no huge errors.

    Grade: C

    Coaching

Disastrous debut for Chan. Offense looked just as bad as ever, just using some different formations. Called twice as many passing plays as running plays, even though its obvious the RBs are much better than the QB.

    Grade: F

    Overall

The Bills certainly have the look and feel of one of the worst teams in the NFL. I'm sure the organization will stubbornly stick with Edwards and continue losing in embarassing fashion. Not much good going on with this team. They proved the experts right by showing just how bad they really are.

    Grade: F

Ben - Don’t have time to address your entire assessment but I did want to give my opinion on the defense as a whole - and defensive line and linebackers in particular. The D-line and linebackers finished 2009 ranked 30th against the run and allowed 4.7 yards per carry. The Dolphins are a pretty good rushing team, finishing 2009 ranked 4th in rushing and averaged 4.4 ypc. In this game, the Fins ran the ball 36 times for 132 yds for a 3.7 average. This defense actually looked stronger as the game went on against a very physical running team. Again, impressive.

So I give the defensive line and linebackers a B+ and the overall defense an A

And just a couple notes on the Special teams. Moorman averaged 41 yards per punt (with half his punts on a short field which brought his avg down) and only two of his punts was returnable. Miami averaged 13.5 yards on kickoff returns and 4.5 yards on punt returns. We only had an 11 yards on one kickoff return and averaged 10 yards on 3 punt returns (didn’t break one but a respectable average). Can’t hold missing a 60+ yard field goal against Lindell. Overall, no big plays but solid play.

So, I give the Special Teams a B+

  11. he said they were the top three interior linemen in that draft. Huge difference.

I might be wrong, but it seemed to me that Buddy was certainly implying that they were not happy with what Green did (i.e.; "We watched the same game you did.") and were trying to get Urbik up to speed in the hopes he would be the right tackle. Just my impression

  12. That's the guy you want as the face of your franchise? My god, what a disgrace. "We're excited!" "I'm not sure that we got C.J. going well enough."

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I've watched Trent Edwards very closely during his time in Buffalo. You can see it in his eyes, you can read it in his body language. You can see it before the games on the sidelines just WATCHING him. Trent Edwards doesn't give a damn about winning or losing. He is a flat-lined, this-is-my-job kind of person who cares about himself first, last, and always. There is absolutely no putting the team first with this guy. Just look at how he'll turtle up at the end of games and won't even TRY to throw the ball down field knowing that is the only chance (slim, granted) of victory. He just wants to preserve himself, his stats, and his image.

How many more chances do we have to give this guy before he is finally out of his "one more chance"?

And don't give me this "the offensive line stinks" bullcrap. There are plenty of quarterbacks who play behind bad offensive lines and don't look HUMILIATINGLY awful. Heck, Jay Cutler has maybe a worse o-line in Chicago, but at least he throws the ball down the field.

You realize that Trent Edwards has never had a single 300-yard passing performance, right? It's a joke. Give me a guy who will at least TRY, over this same tired-ass scared checkdown turtle humiliating baby bull ****. It's a man's game. Give me someone who isn't afraid to fail, and maybe, just maybe we'll get this franchise out of the gutter.

Just a guess here, but I'm thinking assessing the desire, will, fears, and intrinsic motivations of another individual is a tad more complicated than this - and probably shouldn't be done in a heightened emotional state.

  13. The only positive from yesterday is that Washington got a victory over Dallas with a new quality HC and A quality experienced QB disproving all this .."well we need to develop" and "we're a couple seasons away". All we needed was something we didn't get...something we put up billboards to convey. But what the hell do we know, we're just the piss poor fans of this BS franchise.

Actually, Washington's victory had little to do with the play of McNabb, or quality coaching for that matter (not to say that Shanahan isn't a quality coach or that I wouldn't want him coaching our team), - and more to do with an opportunistic defense (won't say good cause they gave up almost 400 yards) and mistakes/poor play of Dallas at critical times. Actually, Washington didn't look much better than the Bills - but a "W" tends to temper the criticism.

  14. Some Sabres forums that I post on will post a "Good, Bad, Ugly" thread after each hockey game. It's pretty self-explanatory. Every interested poster posts what they think was good, bad, and worst about the game.

Would it be cool to do one of those every week here at TBD? I know that there are a lot of threads that get started after the game that talk about particular subject matter within the game, but I thought it might be cool to have a thread every week where we divvy up and air our grievances. If not, and you'd rather merge or delete this, that's cool, too. Just a thought!

    Here's mine:

    The Good

    - Defense. Kept the team in the game. Moats with a good play. Maybin made a few tackles.

    - Spiller in open field.

    - 'Scoe. My god. Welcome back, punt return game.

    - David Nelson. He is a player. He should be on the field more than Stevie Johnson right now.

    - Lindell. Could probably hit you a 58 or 59 yarder, and maybe we'll even get to see it this year instead of punting from the 32.

    The Bad

    - Lack of a run game. Put Spiller on the outside, but let Fred Jackson get the tough yards. FRED JACKSON CAN GET TOUGH YARDS.

    - Tight Ends. Did we even play tight ends?

    - Very little pass rush except when the Dolphins gave it to them.

    - I don't even remember hearing Marcus Stroud's name today.

    The Ugly

    - Poz. "They call me Mr. Glass". He's okay when he's healthy, and just okay. He's never healthy.

    - Could Gailey calling the plays from down low be a thing? They've got to run the ball better. And whatever it means. If it means playing Fitz, or Trent, or a Brohm, or a guy off the street, when the defense is daring you to throw down field, you've got to find a way to throw down field.

    - Trent. Good guy, good athlete (not good QB). It's time to go. The Dolphins were, at a time, begging this guy to throw downfield and he just wouldn't until he was absolutely forced too. Two blatant interceptions dropped by the Dolphins.

    - Cornell Green. Horrible, on a day when the offensive line pass protected at least a little bit.

Actually a pretty good assessment. The defense did play well inspite of being on the field for 37-38 minutes of the game (and numerous short breaks due to the number of offensive three and outs) and the lack of a pass rush. Given an entirely new scheme as well - I thought they did well. Unfortunately, the lack of a pass rush is a serious problem, particularly when they face quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. Special teams played well also.

The offense is a different story - or more accurately - the same old story. It will look exactly the same until this coaching staff devises, and the players execute, some strategies to counter eight and nine men in the box. There were times I counted 10 defensive players within two yards of the line of scrimmage (not counting short yardage situations) - and no answer for it (just like last year...and the year before...and the year before...) frustrating.

  15. Great game and remember it well :) I was unable to go to that game, but have it on tape (I also have almost 100 other games on tape from 1987 through 1999 - then stopped taping them. Can't imagine why  )

And just for the younger fans. The first game I remember going to was the Bills and the Jets in 1969: Our hopes riding high on an exciting young running back we got with the first draft pick after winning only one game the year before (You think things are bad now?). Anyway, we lost and OJ only had about 40 -50 yards rushing - but he did catch some passes, returned some kicks, and scored a touchdown. Made us think he was going to be something special, and he was - until he started killing people.

Been through bad times before and it got better. Things will change for the better with this team too.
