  1. Love the videos! Although, I'm not certain that wasn't Charles Manson under the alias of "Vincent Gallo" being interviewed in the beginning of the "A Team" video...

That would be a little disconcerting if he was a Bills fan...although, it would explain his level of misplaced aggession :o

  2. I'm actually sick of this story and have tried to avoid it, but I'll say my piece. He's a top 5 safety based on past production and potential (he's young), and he wants a long term contract -- not a franchise contract -- that reflects this. A contract of this type typically includes an initial signing bonus in the $20 million or so range, which is $13 million less than he's getting from the Bills this season. Like all NFL players, he's concerned about injuries, and well he should be. There are no players in the NFL who are more "injury prone" than others -- they're all injury prone given the nature of the sport. Yes, some have more nagging injuries than others, but most everyone has a bad injury at some point. For most players, a season-ending injury is an inevitability, and Byrd would be an abject fool not to be concerned about this. The people bitching about his complaints don't seem to be willing to contextualize the situation. Basically, he's way, way, way better at what he does than any of us on this board. Plus he's in a field that places a premium on high end talent. Consequently, I have very little tolerance for jokers from South Buffalo, Cheektowaga, Elmira, etc. saying that these guys make too much money and screw him. Remember: if the players don't get the money, the owners do. The TV contracts and ticket prices are set. And frankly, I don't care about the owners. Nor do I want to watch Jerry Jones et al. on TV doing whatever it is that they do.

The Bills wanted to give him a long term contract. Nobody knows what Byrd and his agent were asking for, or what the Bills were offering. So, without being privy to the negotiations, you can no more contextualize the situation than the "jokers from South Buffalo, Cheektowaga, Elmira, etc" that you refer to. You have simply chosen to assume the Bills organization did not make him a reasonable offer. What we do know is this: The franchise tag is available to teams and they have the right to use it. It is a part of doing business in the NFL that was agreed to by players and owners. The Bills franchised Byrd; however, they did not reach a long term agreement and Byrd had the option to sign or not sign the tender. All of that is business - that is the way it works in the NFL. Yet, once Byrd signed the tender his obligation was to be in camp with enough time to learn the new system, get in playing shape, and be ready to give 100% come gameday.

  3. Did he not have responsibility to notify the Bills of this condition prior to signing his tender?

Interesting response from Marrone, during his press conference, when asked if Byrd's injury was something that occurred before reporting or after: "I think that’s a good question. Obviously he passed our physical when he came in."

  4. I am rooting for him just like any Bills fan.....but I am laughing about the HOF and 2,000+ yard aspirations.

It took him 3 years to get his FIRST 2,000 yards and he's 26 already.

And no, it wasn't all Gailey's fault.

Spiller was very slow on the uptake wrt learning the offense.......at Clemson they used flash cards on the sideline to send in plays and CJ had a hard time having the play called by the QB in the huddle. That was an......interesting.....impediment. :flirt:

And it also took about 2 full seasons to learn that he couldn't bounce every run to the outside in the NFL.

That is what kept him on ice for most of his first two seasons.

The next obstacle is holding up to an 18-25 carry per game workload. I hope I am wrong, but I just don't see it happening.

And I am not against using him that way, he is a running back not a quarterback......use those carries up while they are under contract. :wallbash::thumbsup:

    1. OJ Simpson had 1900 yards rushing in his first 3 seasons and, yes, he did rush for 2000 yards and made the Hall of Fame (of course he also started murdering people - so, there's that.). Not making comparisons - just commenting on your stated reasons for laughing at the idea. Last year, he reached 1200 yards on 207 carries. "In the history of the NFL, no player has reached 1,200 yards on fewer rushing attempts." (ESPN)

    2. As far as bouncing runs outside - Spiller has done "most of his damage between the tackles" and is the "only qualified running back in the past five seasons to average more than 6.0 yards per rush between the tackles." (ESPN)

    3. Regarding his size and toughness - "Despite a listed weight of 200 pounds, Spiller was one of seven running backs to average 2.0 yards after contact on those runs last season. The other six running backs had an average weight of 223.5 pounds." (ESPN) Also, running backs of similar size that seemed to hold up just fine: Thurman Thomas, Barry Sanders, Marshall Faulk, Emmitt Smith....(again, not comparing - just commenting on your reasoning)

But you are probably right - laughable

  5. The issue is not that we "dumpster dive," but the fact that many of our breakout players come from such a source, and not our draft picks. In aggregate, our talent level would be far higher with better drafting combined with our solid knowledge of the waiver/UDFA wires.

Byrd, Gilmore, Williams,Glenn, Wood, Johnson, Spiller...in fact, weren't at least 17 of the projected 22 starters drafted by the Bills?

  6. Welcome to the new world, my friend. The article I linked is from the Washington friggin' Post. Among others, it quotes "Duke University neurobiologist Miguel Nicolelis." And if you missed the fact that Hackett already has a degree in neurobiology:

Who better to push the NFL talent frontier?

I'm sending you a signal to stop typing...

  7. The defense is bad because last year they were the worst ever. They have 80% of the same players. They have a new, unproven DC that could be a genius or an idiot. If I had to make a prediction, it wouldn't be a top 10 D this year. No matter how bad Wannstedt was, we shouldn't have been that bad last year.

And this prediction could be from a genius or an idiot. We'll just have to wait and see...that's why they play the games.

  8. Wow. Just Shocked... Kaufmann, AND Dickerson? What in the hell are we going to score with? TJ Graham? -IMPOSSIBLE. The guy simply cannot catch. And CREZ BUTLER??? Why the f___ would you cut that guy Doug? WTF did he do beside out-perform every CB currently on our roster?

These cuts remove easily half of the scoring potential from this team? -Something that will hurt like hell down the line.

I don't see Kaufmann clearing waivers at all. He's probably already been picked up by the Patsies! How can you NOT see the talent in that kid???

Talk to us doug... You've lost me on this one.

Really hoping this is sarcasm....just like to give the benefit of the doubt

  9. Since the preseason loss to Washington, it seems as if there is less meaningful discussion on this board...and much more of threads quickly turning into post after post of some variant of the theme, "This team sucks." I don't really care what happened last year or the years before that - and I certainly don't care about a meaningless preseason game. There is above average talent on the defensive line, as well as other areas of this team. I like the direction this team is going and I'm willing to wait until they have played a few regular season games under this coaching staff before I make any determinations of how good they may or may not be.

  10. I'm not advocating this idea, but Williams was horrible in Q1 against Redskins. Both big pass plays were his fault. He was totally out of position and also poor tackling

I would have to go back and look at the game again to be certain (which I won't - for any reason); however, I believe both of those long pass completions were Searcy's responsibility - not Williams.

  11. I seemed to me that, with a new coaching staff (with new offensive and defensive schemes), many young and new players, and a rookie quarterback, the first half of the season was going to be a bit of a struggle. I felt that the second half of the season is where we would start to see this team coming together and the see the foundation for a very competitive team in the future. I still feel that way. I prefer to wait until I have watched them play a few regular season games before I start making any real assessments. The truth of the matter is that nobody has any idea how things will play out...

  12. Taped it but I doubt if I'm going to watch it...Murphy and Kelso were saying they wanted to "kiss Mike Shanahan on the cheek" for running the ball and keeping the clock moving on this "ugly, ugly game"...

Enough for me that I don't have much interest in seeing it, lol

Don't watch it. Truly not a positive thing to take away from this game. Forget about it and move on...

  13. Haven't had a chance to watch, from.what I am hearing Bills are playing "Wannstadt" defense and getting smoked with no movement or blitzing?

A defense comprised primarily of starters giving up 300 yards of offense to Grossman and White in a half (and getting pretty much manhandled) is certainly reminiscent of a number of games last year. They certainly have not played with the same level of intensity or energy of the first two pre-season games - and have been awful both offensively and defensively...from top to bottom. Pretty dismal performance. Hopefully, just one of those days.

  14. I get this and have seen the veiled nature of this staff right from the first press conference. What I don't like is the lying. If they don't want to disclose the injury yet then just say that they are following the situation closely, are up to speed but don't want to disclose anything to the press yet because they want to be sure first or because they want to have a plan to deal with it in place or simply because it's none of their business. Just don't say that they have no idea about the injury.

Not well, but maybe they should grow some testicles and tell the truth like real "straight shooters" and deal with the blowback instead of lying. How's the lying working in assuaging the press?

I have absolutely no problem calling somebody a liar if he or she has earned it. What I do not understand is this willingness to not just question Marrone's integrity, but to call him an outright liar with no evidentiary basis - just soley on what you think or believe he knows. Maybe I am just old school; however, I think integrity is one of those qualities that truly defines the character of a person. I'm not going to question it unless I have good reason to.

  15. After reading some of the media accounts of, and responses to, Doug Marrone today - this is my two cents: They seem to find it incredulous that Marrone didn't have any further information regarding Mario Williams and that he had not taken the time to find out - and that the purpose of asking over and over was because Marrone's answers were "hard to believe." If Doug Marrone had, in any way up to this point, been deceptive or dishonest with the media, then they would have every right in the world to find what he says "hard to believe," and openly question his integrity. However, as far as anyone knows, he has been nothing but straight forward and honest. What they think he should know or should have found out is irrelevant. Until proven that it should be otherwise, he should be treated as what he appears to be - a man of integrity and honesty. I watched the video and it appeared to me that questioning his integrity is what annoyed him. I don't blame him. Anyone who has their integrity questioned for no good reason would probably be annoyed or offended as well.

  16. I started following the Bills around 1967 when I was eight years old. I went to my first game in 1968...a blowout loss to the Oakland Raiders in a 1-12 season. It didn't matter I was already hooked. I left the Buffalo area in 1977; however, I brought my passion for the Bills with me...and it has never wavered...through the worst of times, the best of times, and everything in between... My children are 31, 30, and 22. None have ever lived in the Buffalo area (although they have spent a considerable time there visiting family over the years), yet, all three are passionate Bills fans.
