  1.

There is one theory that the reason the Jets stopped going anywhere after 2 years, is that the FO mortgaged their salary cap to bring in FA talent, then couldn't draft well enough to backfill the talent. I am the most casual and occasional of college football watchers and have not been following the Jets drafts and other personnel moves to be able to prove.

One measure will be what the Jets do next year, and how much roster turnover they need to do it

    Please don't feed the trolls

I live in the NYC area and Isik was considered the issue. They let go of a lot of their talent especially on offensive line and never replaced them. Also they were using free agents at skill positions that didn't pan out and didn't draft to fill those positions. Unlike the Bills they are very weak at receiver and running back and letting go of Revis was a mistake. DB is also a glaring position of weakness for them, so while both teams need a QB, the Jests need everything else as well except D line.

If the Bills can somehow find a QB in this draft that the talking heads are not clued in on then maybe the Bills have a chance. I still say draft 3 QBs in this year's draft, bring a couple FAs or trade for a QB and then go after quards and DBs in FA and in draft.

  2. One of the hidden costs of this trade was losing Marrone/Hackett. How about that?

And that is a good thing. Watkins is not the problem, the offense and its philosophy was this year. Bills need to develop a QB, that is obvious and in the mean time find one they can sign or trade for. Carolina has a few, once the Cardinals get healthy you think they might let go of one? I would be very interested in knowing what other teams have as younger backups that could be ready to take the next step.

That being said, the Bills have what six or seven pics and has been stated in another thread use them to draft say 3 QBs and 3 linemen and an DB. Just saying, it doesn't sound like rocket science or that it could even be measured by rocket science so Whaley and Rex should be able to handle this task..

  3. What would a punishment be? Just a fine I'd assume? Is this really that big of a deal?

So should you with that lame avatar...

Still is this something done after they see the formation of the D? Interesting, taking the thinking away from the QB, no wonder young good QBs are hard to find, they are being told what to think, not trained on how to react to what they are seeing. I say, make them change QBs every quarter as punishment.

  4. I think it's a wise move....Coughlin's track record there speaks for itself. I think the lack of a quality RB, mostly due to the injuring of Jennings have really hurt that offense. Eli is so much better when he has a decent run game around him....and they were not getting that at all with Jennings banged up. Andre Williams stinks, IMO. You might be right about Whisenhunt, but its just delaying the inevitable IMO. The way that team tried to build it's team, ala signing and drafting OG's like crazy, just makes no sense, which is more of an indictment on their GM.

Also, there O-line has been a disaster this year. Been watching there games living downstate and when Eli has time he can still huck it.

  5. Orton is at his worst with a bad OLine. Build him an OLine and he's the best placeholder we've had in awhile.

This team with a 'good' qb would be a force.

Agreed, Joe Gibbs proved you can win a superbowl with a very average QB.... Schroeder and Rypien and a talented over the Hill guy in Williams with a great O-line. The Ravens won one with that numb nuts announcer I can't think of his name right now.

This O-line is growing, guard play needs to improvement. That being said Orton is tough to watch especially when missing or not throwing to guys wide open. His accuracy seems off too. He was playing better during the warmer weather. I don't hate him, just frustrated because like everyone else, this team has possibilities and the D deserves to make the playoffs.

P.S. Could the Bills just draft offensive linemen and QBs in the next draft, maybe a running back? Do they have enough depth elsewhere?

    Go Bills

  6. I think it is time. Bills aren't going to make the playoffs with Orton and the Defense deserves a shot. Orton has gotten a case of the Fitzs and can't through the ball long. Bills need to see if EJ has learned anything or do they need to draft a QB in 2nd round?

  7. I am shocked this hasn't been posted yet. I lost all faith in Orton on that 3rd down when he could have done a Fitz and dove ahead to keep the drive alive.

Instead he slid and chose to give the ball back to Peyton Manning.

No guts. When you're on the road in a conference game as major underdogs in December with playoff hopes still alive and you happen to have an 82 career passer rating, you cant afford to play like a wimp.

Jim Kelly must have cringed when he saw that play, I know I did. The next time someone tells me what a competitor Orton is I'm laughing in their face.

He's cashing his $5M trying to figure out how he can skip another training camp next year and wait for his phone to ring when someone's qb goes down.

Agreed which is why the Refs shouldn't have been worried about the Bills winning the game... they had Orton on their side.

  8. Chandler catches a TD and the Bronco jumps up and down claiming he's been interfered with and lo and behold a late flag is thrown. Granted Hogan scored after, but that flag seemed to only been thrown after the Bronco complained.

Not that the Broncos needed calls because the Orton led Bills offense was so inept, but the Refs insured the game was the Broncos in the first half. The interfence call on the interception..., the interference call on the Ball knocked away near the end zone, the unsportsman like call when the receiver was in the upper ribs, shoulder as the ball hit his hands, the roughing the kicker non-call, the head butt against Chandler.

It was obvious the NFL wants the Broncos to lose to Seattle or Greenbayanother Superbowl to Seattle or Greenbay lead by Manning. The fix was in, get over it. The Bills still need a quarterback, but wow this defense is something else. Problem is the league is getting to be like the NBA.

The officiating was worse than when Shula was head of the referree committee. I haven't watch very many games this year and now I know why. You get a more balanced reffed game up at a Montreal hockey game... pathetic.

  9. I haven't checked in for a while and as I watch Notre Dame get pounded in the first half, I realize that any return of the Bills to glory will have to wait another 5 years. At least next year they will get the Number 1 pick and hopefully can draft a QB. Moroon is going to be a hard pill for Bills faithful to swallow evident by the quick perouse of the 67 pages about this of this mess. I am soooo sorry for the Bills team who I think are just a few linebackers and cover guys away from being a lot better. But WTF this isn't even my childhood Bills team with OJ who at least was entertaining.:censored: :censored:

  10. The things that sticks in my head was the fantom ruffing the passer call and there is now way a fine should have resulted and PS Brady's knee was down. That being said, there was no pass rush and Brady picked Bills apart in the second half. I went to the game, my first in a few years and was joyous after the first half and beffuddled by the end of the 3rd quarter.... No adjustments by the Bills coaching staff, no blitzes and no paybacks to Patriot players tacking cheap shots that the refs were not calling.

Reminded me of the Sabres after the Lucic incident. They played like a bunch of wimps except Gilmore who was outstanding. Despite getting run over a few times, he kept sticking his head in there unlike Williams and his phantom arm tackles.

  11. Revisiting the Spiller fumble,,, where the heck was the Corey Mac trap play that was used last year at the 1 where he flattened Wolfork for the score???? Guess we don't learn from previous success.

Wilfork was allowed to get up and come in from behind and rip it out without any protection from a Bills players. He was flattened, the play should have been blown dead for forward progress, still no Bill protected Spiller from the pile that was on top of him.

  12. i only dug for a little while but the best article i could find was 2-3 years old and while yes, the ohio state, texas, lsu and florida types of schools made INSANE money..... it was a 2007 article that i found that went furthest down the list through the top 25, and yes in fact, houston, a top 25 team that year LOST over 2 million dollars. I find it hard to believe that teams outside the top half of the SEC, big ten/12, and pac 10 are making the money you think. you go to your average conference usa game, or any other mid major school and you are not getting full stands, or $40 tickets, a lot less money for tv, less donations from boosters.....

and i cant say that its totally fair to simply say its a 20k payment for school, and as pdaddy did, compare it to the salary of a mcdonalds cook. yes, state schools are, but any private is bordering 50k these days.

as for the autograph thing - i hear you, thats one of the sillier rules. truly why cant mom and dad sell memorabilia that their son gives them or how would they even regulate that?

and yes, i think if you hold the teams, boosters, agents and ncaa accountable instead of "punishing" players who are often already gone - i think you see the payment for play fall away quickly. coach is going to report his violations if he is blackballed for lying. agents will think twice about touching college players if they get decertified when caught. if you get rid of the pay for play, how fast does an alternative league become viable for these kids that dont care about school and only dollars in pockets? it only takes a handful to jump ship and its a legitimate option. tell me the top ncaa players didnt walk away with more money than they would have made in the UFL.

here we go - a better article

    http://www.baynews9.com/article/sports/2010/august/140944/College-Football-2010:-Study-shows-that-most-athletic-programs-losing-money

68 football programs were profitable, while 52 lost money.

    basketball showing a similar breakdown.

with of course the top schools turning profits that are just insane, not everyones making the cash you think. when coupled with all the other revenue losing sports, only 14 athletic departments made money.

The last book that I am aware that was detailed on this issue was called College Sports Inc, Written by Murray Sperber

From my understanding you are mixing up your accounting terms. Revenue generating vs. profitable. Many schools make up shortfalls in athletic programs especially football by increasing student fees. They hide their losses by attributing many of those expenses to the University itself and generally have no clue on what a profit loss statement is. Yes they are revenue generating, but with a few exceptions they spend more than they bring in.

That being said if there were not TV and merchandise contracts with the Universities, I agree this line of argument to pay the players would be a moot point. But as long as someone is making money off marketing the image of these players, I believe they have a right to compensation for it.
