  1. Actually,he is a career 57.8 passer. As Al Sharpton would say "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts."

And he played a lot better last year than the year before. Now he's got the whole off season as the #1 guy to work with all the other starters. I saw enough improvement last year to suspect that more is on the way. If he sucks this year, then yeah, he's toast. But at least give the guy a chance.

I wouldn't quote Al Sharpton when trying to make a point, he makes up facts. At any rate, in large part, the Fitz doubters have solid facts to back up their arguments. It's fitz "intangibles" that make him an acceptable stop-gap for next season.

Here's a rough synopsis of the logic around here:

    Jim Kelly was awesome.

Ryan Fitzpatrick IS NOT Jim Kelly.

    Therefore, Ryan Fitzpatrick sucks.

    Ryan Fitzpatrick sucks.

Andy Dalton/Ryan Mallett/Colin Kaepernick IS NOT Ryan Fitzpatrick.

    Therefore, Dalton/Mallett/Kaepernick does not suck.

Does not suck > Does suck.

Therefore, we need to draft Dalton/Mallett/Kaepernick, or we suck. And anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.

You hit it right on the head.

  2. It depends on whether or not the staff believes Dalton, Kaepernick, or Mallett is capable of being a real Franchise QB - the kind that will allow us to pass on QB's for the next seven to ten years and will make us competitive each and every year. There's such a mixed review on these guys - to me, Mallett looks like a better version of Flacco, Kaepernick looks like a poor man's Newton, but might very well end up being just as good, and Dalton might also be a surprise - sort of a Brees type... so, if they really like the upside of any of these then I think you do go for it.

Also, we should be looking at an OLB type who can be a 4-3 DE, too. Someone who is in the 265-285lb range who can be an OLB in our base, and shift to the DE when we go 4-3 look hybrid fashion. Who fits that mold? Brooks Reed? Jabaal Sheard? Houston? Can't overlook Bowers! If we pass him physically, imagine walking away from round 2 with 2 of the top 3 overall defensive talents just a month ago, in most mocks!

Then there is Rudolph, if he's available.

I think if you go QB with the second you still have a chance of landing a good LB in the third, and a decent TE in the fourth, so that would be my choice, unless there is a D-line or hybrid OLB type at 34 who is just too good to pass up, like a Sheard, Austin, or Ballard. Maybe Wilson is seen as borderline first round talent, and would be an immediate starter at either OLB or inside linebacker. I read somewhere that Brooks Reed has very similar measurables as Clay Matthews. Again, though, if they want a QB of the future, I think they have to get him here at 2. They can get RT in F.A., and a TE later in the draft, as well as LB's.

I don't think there is a "franchise" QB left. Ponder in my opinion was the only one in the draft who had that potential. Time will tell. Mallet could also turn out to be that guy.

  3. Ryan. I am not positive. All signs point to Newton and Dareus going 1 and 2. But that is not exactly inside information. Carolina knows who they are going to pick and has for sometime. There is no vasilating going on. The comment about having 4 players on the board is pretty funny and simply to see if someone will move up. If that is the case it is likely Miller or Green for the Bills.

I hesitate to pass this on, but there is some Fairly talk. But it is not as specific as the other information, so I don't want to throw the board into a panic. Might just be becauuse he is well regarded. I also don't like being so nebulous. Sorry all. Some years things are just more readily available and apparent.

Thanks NGU! We really appreciate you posting on this board and answering our questions!!!

    GO BILLS.

  4. NGU, thanks again for your insight into the draft process for the Bills. Just for fun (and you don't have to answer), but how do you see the first three picks of the draft turning out. Obvisouly this means you have to guess who Carolina and Denver take. I understand this is nearly impossible to do because you don't have insider knowledge of those teams, but I'd enjoy your thoughts nonthless becuase you know more about how front offices work than anyone else on this board. (myself included). Thanks again for taking the time do do this!

  5. NGU, any insight (of course this is dependent on who goes in the 1st round) as to the Bills thinking regarding taking a QB in the later rounds. Are they set on taking a QB, or do they have a limited list and would perfer to load up on D this year if none of the limited-list QB's are available?

  6. Thank you as always never give up! It is interesting that the Bills like Green. I too believe he might be best player in draft. But there is a log jam at WR now- Evans, Johnson, Parrish, Easley, Jones, Nelson, Roosevelt. This is an area of strength for Buffalo. As is, cuts will be tough and there is a possibility we keep 6 WR's. No doubt Green would be our #1 WR. But who goes? Do we try and trade Evans? And if draft Green and keep Evans we are loaded at WR

No worries. Trade Evans, and we are still loaded. This will force teams to back off the run, and may give Spiller the space he seemingly needs to best utilize his moves. If we take Green and he lives up to the hype, we are looking at a young WR corp that can enable us to use Spiller and another average RB after Jackson retires and still put up 30 pts per game. (not to mention the damage the WR's themselves can do to the defenses).

  7. Thanks again for the insight. I really hope we don't take Newton. I don't see much difference between any of the QB's in this draft. There are no sure things with any of the QB's as they all have signifigant question marks. As Parcells said on ESPN last night, "John Elway is not on the board." Also, if we draft a QB he will most likely be sitting for a year, or struggle as most rookie QB's do--thus we would have drafted another player with a top pick that will not be an instant impact player. I'd rather take an immediate impact player. If both defensive players on the Bills board are gone, take Green. We would have an outstanding receiver corp that would open up running lanes for CJ and Jackson. Fitz could throw for 300 yards a game, and we can get trade Evans if Easly plays well in camp/preseason. We can then take defense from 2-7. As Parcells (and many others on this board have pointed out) this draft is extremly deep with defensive talent, no need to reach for one in the 1st round or take a QB in my opinion.

  8. I gotta tell you...I'm ignoring any reference to Trent Edwards, JP Losman, or Rob Johnson on this Board...I'm doing my own part to pull Bills Fans out of the black hole that is these constant comparisons to our failed QB's...It's a never-ending cycle of futility...

If you can't understand why a Team would be interested in Gabbert based on what I wrote, and you have to compare him to a broken down Trent Edwards, then there is really nothing to discuss here... B-)

I think the point most people are making is that while Gabbert is a good QB, he is not worth a #3 pick, particularly given that other great QB's like Ponder and Dalton are most likely going to be available in the 2nd. You have to go with either a D-lineman or OLB (need) or best player available (A.J. Green). While we need a QB, the difference, if any, between Gabbert and Ponder/Dalton isn't great enough to justify taking Gabbert at #3.

  9. Bradford and Suh were "safe" picks. Gabbert is nothing of the kind. There's tons of stuff online about his not handling either real or perceived defensive pressure well and his propensity of throwing dinky little checkdown passes his whole career. Basically he's Trent Edwards 2.0 with a giant media hype machine up his butt.

The only top 5 truly "safe" picks in this draft are Peterson or Green. I know that you don't want to hear that, but it's the truth.

You are, sadly, 100% correct. With that said, I'd take A.J Green, try to trade back into the first round and grab a D lineman and take Ponder or Dalton in the Second. Then go D from there on out.

  10. Would love to see the Bills take Quinn at #3. A year away from football should not scare you as long as he has been working out. Vick was out for several years, and TB WR Mike Williams also basically missed a year and had a great rookie year.

Take Quinn in 1st Round, then grab Romeous from Pitt in a later round. Those two will be studs for years to come. The QB class is deep, i'd take any of the following: Locker, Ponder, Dalton; all of whom should be available after Rd. 1.

  11. The reason so many fans keep reliving the past Bills drafts is because they have no confidence in future Bills drafts. Its true this will only be Nix's second draft but with no impact players or game changing players drafted last year there is no confidence things will change. Just show me the impact players from last years draft. Thought so, there weren't any. Bills fans have every right to be very concerned.

This guy has a point. You need an impact player, esp. w/ the first and second round picks. Bills fans should be worried. The Steelers ALWAYS get impact players in the 1st and 2nd round (Pouncy, Ben, Woodley, Timmons, etc.) No reason to re-hash the draft picks we should have made, but the point is whether we can FINALLY get it right in the first 2 rounds. The pressure is rightfully on the Bills to quit wasting picks and creating a decade of futility. I don't care what position we pick, we need someone who can contribute on day one and make this team win more games.

  12. This guy was a (high) first rounder before the suspension. He could be a good pickup for the Bills in the later rounds (2 perhaps). He was a beast a UNC. Thoughts? We get two solid D lineman, one with pick #3, one with Austin in the Second? Or a pass rushing LB in the first, and Austin in the Second.

  13. Let someone else take the gamble on Gabbert....

Im telling you guys Marcel Darius or Robert Quinn is the pick

I think you are correct. I think Dalton from TCU is the Bills QB pick in a later round, He fits the Chan Gailey mold.

We need lots of D help, and there other other QB's later in the draft. I can't see Gailey/Nix reaching to grab a QB here when there will be many solid D players available. We need an instant impact player with our first round pick.

  14. We should hope and pray we have a shot at Luck next year (not saying tank it, just saying maybe he falls in teh draft, maybe we can swing a trade up, maybe we tank it all on our own, who knows)

I think he falls in the Draft. He was this years hot item and missed his shot at number one (Like Locker last year). People will be all over him next year looking for any flaws, and having a new head coach will cause him some problems. If he falls, we should grab him. I also like the idea of getting Kolb if he can be had for a 3rd rounder or later. He is a good QB.

  15. I'm a Pens fan (flame away...didn't start watching hockey till I moved from Buffalo to Pittsburgh) but it's great to see that the Sabers will be staying in Buffalo for a long time. The City deserves it. Now lets keep the Bills here long term and win a Super Bowl!! Steeler fans always say they are the greatest, but Buffalo Bills fans are the best. No championships in forever, and the stadium still sells out regularly, sites like this exist, and people live and die for the team. Go Bills!

  16. No they won't. Sanchez is going to feel the heat against the Steelers and Packers (if they even beat the Steelers) and throw some INT's. The Steelers should win the AFC Championship, and the superbowl will be a great game between two great defenses. And I've had enough of this "we are the underdog, no one believes in us/we are the best team in the world" schizoid garbage from Rex Ryan. You made it to the AFC Championship game last year and added good players, who dosen't think you're a good team? The JETS are quickly moving ahead of the Pats as my least fav NFL team.

  17. I'd like Matthews.......not sure he will be around that long...ya never know I guess.

I like your draft. Don't see some of your players such as MAtthews and Romeous lasting that long, but if they do and we get them they will provide an instant spark for our D. Another option instead of Romeous if he's gone is Sherad from Pitt.

  18. Yup, we dismissed Peterson talking in the Von Miller potential thread. Jeff Fuller (#8) dominated him in the Cotton Bowl. We need someone who can stop the run and put pressure on the QB. Pray that Carolina and Denver do not pick Fairley, otherwise, Marcell Dareus should be the choice at #3.

Am I mistaken, or is Dareus like Maybin in that he only had 1-2 good college seasons. I could be wrong, but that's the impression I get. Picking him could be a giant mistake.

Most of the posts on this board seem to indicate that people think the Bills are one or two players away from being competitive which is just not true. The Bills are broken and they need talent to get fixed. This #3 pick isn't for next year or even for 2012, this pick is about building a competitive team for the future. I tell you, if Peterson's the guy, I'll watch in 3 years with a big smile on my face as he shuts down the pass. If they go DL, I'll watch with a big smile too. Bottom line is we need talent, something we've been sorely lacking for the past 10 years. It doesn't matter the position, they just need to hit on a few of these picks.

Well said. Take the top talent. Although, if Fariley is gone, I'd even consider Von Miller at #3, even though that's too high for him based on the mocks i've seen (late 1st round).

  19. Gotcha. I got confused. But, totally just my brain not functioning.

Given that Luck was perhaps the only "sure thing" QB, and there may only be one "sure thing" DE/DT that's selected at 1or 2, I think this would be a great year to trade down a few slots and still get a top notch player and a few extra picks. So, I'd be all for it.

Of course, I must qualify my opinion by stating that I have almost no understanding of who exactly is considered the best players in this draft, other than what I read here.

I like your thinking. If Fairley is gone, and Jones would give us #9 and his second and third (or fourth) I'd be all for it.

  20. Fairley. Newton has missed two easy TD passes, Fairley has been all over the field all game. Not even close. Newton has also had the benefit all season of a very dominant O-line, he won't have that here. No one should take Netwon in the first round, and he should give his Heisman to Luck. That said, I'll be surprised if Fairley is available when we pick.
