  1. Actually they went 4-7 his first year, then 8-5 the next year. Then 5-7 in year three, and another 8-5 to round it out.

And I don't think only 6 scholarship players left the first year, but I'm not sure. I know the number is around 22 for the first 2 years combined.

Your right about the records, but I'm pretty certain that 6 scholarship players left in the first year. The main point is that the Syracuse program was MUCH better when Marrone left. He also instituted a good strength and conditioning program. Gee, think we could use that around here!

As an example, I think Shiano(sp) in Tampa a hard ass doing it the wrong way. My gut is he is fired after next season. OTOH, many examples of "disciplinarians/no no nonsense/hard ass/ whatever adjective you prefer" coaches like Parcells, Belicheck, Tomlin, being highly successful.

Some do it the right way, some do it the wrong way. You can add Cower to your list above as an example of the right way. Marrone was liked by his players in NO and Syracuse, and has experience in the NFL. No reason to think he won't do it the right way. Remember when some where grumbling about Coughlin being "too tough," then he went out and won two Super Bowls. Sign me up for that.

  2. Hell yeah, this is win win for every one; league makes more money bc of more games and all htat goes with it and more cities and fans are excited about there chances of making it to the playoffs.

Just think we would have made the playoffs all of Jaurons years :D .

Yeah, but we'd still be stuck with Jauron and meidacoracy!

    +1

They should go back to 3 divisions and one WC per conference. None of the teams that lost this weekend looked like they belonged anywhere near the playoffs.

Redskins looked good minus Shananhan's idiotic move to play RGIII. And the Colts looked good, they just ran into a Ravens defense from 2000.

However in previous seasons, sub 500 teams have snuck into the playoffs.

At least I know the Seahawks did 2 years ago. And I think there are more.

    But I agree.

An expansion of the playoff field is absurd.

i would vote no to expansion. The regular season is so good right now. Every game matters. And I love the playoff format.

yet a 10-6 team could miss the playoffs simply because there's not enough playoff spots, does that seem fair to you?

Even if its an 8-8 team, playoffs bring something good to a smaller market that perhaps helps them survive going up against bigger markets. Extra playoff games could be the difference between a profitable season to help secure the teams future.

I don't know about you fellas, but an 8-8 Bills team making the playoffs this season would sure put a smile on my face...

good point about the 10-6 teams though. But I still like it the way it is. now watch, we go 10-6 next year and miss the playoffs, I'll become a hypocrite and change my mind .:thumbsup:

  3. Nassib displayed intelligence and accurracy this season completing 63 percent of his passes for 3,619 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Nassib had a record-setting game in a narrow loss to Northwestern in Syracuse's opener. He threw four touchdowns in the second half to give the Orange a lead. Nassib set Syracuse records in passing attempts and yards as he completed 45-of-66 passes for 479 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Nassib also picked up some clutch yards on the ground.

Syracuse doesn't have a strong supporting cast, and Nassib has played better than his numbers indicate.

I think you should watch more football.

This. If Nassib had a better cast around him, the numbers would have been even greater. Lemon is a good WR, but not great. His yardage, pocket presence, and TD to INT ratio are great.

hmmm I'll have to find which thread I mentioned this but I agree that he has a certain Trentish quality. The issue for me is - is it the good or bad Trent? That said he grew on me a lot over this year. At the start of the year I thought he was garbage but by the louisville game (highlights that I posted) I was converted into thinking maybe a 3rd round pick. After the Louisville game it was late first early 2nd. He throws darts around and familiarity with Marrone's offense raises my intrigue even more. Still don't want him at 8 but I wouldn't mind a trade down/trade up scenario to nab him.

edit: found it! Link or it didn't happen... post #25

Would love to trade down for him. Then grab DE and OLB in the second round w/ our 2 second round picks. And hopefully get 2 4ths as well. What would we likely get for trading down, guess it depends on who is still on the board. But it will be hard to trade down if Jarvus Jones is sitting there at #8.

  4. Preseason Bills vs Giants or Jets

that was my initial thought, but I don't want more Jets or Giants fans there than Bills fans. Although, if enough people came from Buffalo and ROC it could be a pretty cool atmosphere. Would def sell out the place. Cuse would love it.

As a Bills fan and Cuse grad, I will def attend any Bills games played in the Carrier dome, hopefully pre-season and not regular season. The Ralph is still the place for Reg season games. (I'm ok w/ one Toronto game, but one in Toronto and one in Syracuse is tooooooo much).

  5. ummm, word of caution: this isn't a college team. these aren't college players. it's one thing to take a my way/highway approach in college. another to do so in the NFL when guaranteed contracts and practice limitations (days, hours and contact) are in place.

and before someone suggests that it's a new coach's perogative to rid team of chaff, well then that was my concern going into a coaching change in the first place: how many Bills fans sign up for more rebuilding?

    just a few thoughts.

    jw

If there are players who are slacking as KW suggested, or if KW is a malcontent looking to be traded, the issue needs to be addressed. Simply coming in and saying, "oh, this is the NFL, I can't deal with certain players poor attitudes" will lead to more years like the last 13. It's time for someone to stop coddling these players. This isn't a "rebuilding," its simply getting rid of a few players who would rather play somewhere else, or "freelance" or "take plays off". And there are also practice limitations in college, so that argument is a red herring. Give it your all here or get out.

but what if that player is Mario as a poster here suggested?

    jw

That's pure surmise. Marrone will not get rid of Mario Williams. Mario was playing through an injury, and knows what it takes to play in the NFL. If KY of all people is going to call out another player for sub-par performance while playing through an injury he is a hypocrite.

Never really understood the sentiment of tempered enthusiasm....what the heck is the point of being a fan (aka fanatic) if you can't let your thoughts run wild on the possibilities of success of an unknown head coaching commodity.

    +1

i think we're a little off topic here. at least one poster here suggested Marrone was very good at getting rid of the slackers at Syracuse. i don't know how that translates at the NFL level.

and any coach that's incapable of getting rid of slackers, be it in college, NFL or high school for that matter, isn't long for the job in the first place.

    jw

Correct. The point is drawing a contrast between coaches like Dick and Chan who were content with slackers, poor performers, and apparently according to KW "slackers" and a actual coach like Marrone who will address these issues. It's a reason for optimism. He won't put up with the BS that pervaded the last two coaching regimes.

I have no idea how Marrone will do. I will say this however.

Having spent 9 years as a player, coach, and coordinator in the NFL, I don't have any concerns about Marrone overdoing the "college dictator thing."

He could very well fail but I'm thinking if he does, it'll have zero to do with delusions of authority or some alienating autocratic management style.

I agree. And if you read the quotes from Syracuse players, he was tough, but fair, approachable and likable. He expected 100% out of you. He was not a dictator, simply demanded that you play to the fullest of your ability. He and Drew Brees crafted the offense that Payton ended up calling the plays from.

  6. That'd be a demotion for a guy that's been a position coach for some time

No doubt. But he is currently unemployed, and reportedly wants to come back to Buffalo. Perhaps QB coach. I don't know. Perhaps I'm stuck 20 years ago as a kid watching him direct the comeback vs. Houston. Just always seemed like a smart guy. Would prob be good with a young QB.

  7. How about all those "Bills fans" yesterday who were complaining that the Browns were making the Bills look bad?

Bottom line, both teams had an interest in Kelly and Marrone. Sources out of Cleveland were actually saying that the Browns were trying to decide which one they liked better.

The Bills got Marrone. It looks like Philly will get Kelly.

Any way anyone wants to cut it up, Cleveland is the loser here.

    Cleveland is ALWAYS the looser.

This. If Kelly - a guy with a 4-year resume - really thinks he should have total control including personnel, he's an arrogant idiot.

    Gregg Williams v. 2.0

Seems like an arrogant idiot to me. I actually think the Browns should have kept their HC. Being a Browns fan is worse than being a Bills fan in terms of suffering IMO.

Can't blame them for stepping up to the plate and taking a cut. I have several friends that are Cleveland fans... probably one of the few fanbases that can truly relate to our own. Couple this with the Raven's win, and I'm sure they're a bit nauseous today.

I HATE the Ravens and I'm not even the bit predisposed to the Browns. I can only imagine how much Browns fans HATE the Ravens.

I don't think the Browns would have made a "Splash" if they had hired Morronne.

I don't think the Browns are in any bad shape. There are still some excellent Head Coaches available.

True. They could still land Lovie Smith. But if I'm Smith, I'm going to the Bills to be a DC for a few years and wait for a better HC gig to open up. Perhaps Washington or Dallas. Anything but Cleveland which is worse run than the Bills IMO.

  8. I'm still stuck in 2010. Keep tracking everything from there thinking that Marrone left in 2006.

Would be cool to have him back in town, but Rob Moore, the WR coach at Cuse, is very good at what he does and should get the job.

Oh, good call. Rob Moore would be a great WR coach hire!! Cuse has had consistently good WR play (2 1000 yr WR's this year I believe). Perhaps quality control for Reich.

  9. Really hope the Bills can get both Levitre and Byrd signed both are important. If I had to choose between the two I would take Levitre.

I'd take Byrd. It's so close though. I just think its more difficult to find a safety who is as good as Byrd. Easier (but not easy) to replace Levitre. Really, the O-line or secondary takes a rather sizable step back with either gone.

  10. Trade down to the later part of the 1st round. If Marrone is married to Nassib, grab him...or whatever QB they like in this draft

I would love this scenario if Jarvus Jones is gone when we pick. If not, grab Jones, trade back into first and nab Nassib.

Nassib at best is a 4th to 5th round pick if your gonna trade down you do it for Barkley

    WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I thought that at first, then went and looked at about four games of Nassib's from 2012 and came away impressed (Rutgers was the one game that he looked bad). It's not that he's great at one thing, but he seems like he's good at a lot of things playing QB. I'm not saying he looked like Drew Brees, but he gave me the impression of a Brees type QB. To me, he looks like he could be a potential franchise QB if he put in the time and dedication to become one. I'm thinking his stock could very easily rise into the first round after looking at the videos I just saw. Would he go #1, no way. But I could see him rise enough to eventually get consideration from the Cards at #7, Bills at #8, Jets at #9 and Tampa Bay at #13 (HC doesn't seem to like his QB).

Once teams without QBs see that this kid does a lot of things very well and they are in the market for a starting QB, then all bets are off. Once he gets in the back range of the first round one of the teams up front will probably pull the trigger and draft him much higher than expected.

Agreed. I've seen him projected from late 1st to 2nd, while QB's like Murray and Landry Jones are in the 3rd and 4th. If this holds up through the combine, I would take Nassib and then whatever QB falls. Can't hurt to draft 2. One will hopefully work out. If not, draft 2 every year until it does.

  11. I would imagine Levitre becomes even more of a priority if that's possible considering Marrone is a former OL coach

There is no way they pay Fitz that 3 mil bonus do unless he agrees to wave it I think he is gone

I think we keep Levitre and Byrd. Would love to see us grab Nassib in the 2nd or late 1st (trade down, or back into first); and Alec Lemon in RD 6. We also need a bruser back. CJ, Freddie, Bruser. Perhaps better utilization of McIntrye?!?

  12. Doug Marrone will work out nice. The roster fits the Saints mold pretty good. But we need some receivers that can catch.

On defense, SU liked to blitz from all over. The linebackers need to be fast and hit. Can Kelvin Sheppard slice through the line and make tackles for losses? SU was fourth in the country in tackles for loss. Is Jairus Byrd a big hitter at safety? I think he goes with a hitter rather than a cover guy.

Byrd can hit, he just gets more credit for his ball skills. But he's both. He also causes turnovers. I think we go for a guy like Jarvus Jones from GA if available for speed, hard hitting LB's.
