It’s tough to say. Some players are willing to bet on themselves but others are willing to take less money in case they get injured or have a bad season.

He may never have the chance to make $44M ever again. One ACL tear and he will be making $5M/year on one year deals for the rest of his career.

I’d take the money if it was me.

The thing is, it looks like the Bills are willing to let him play out his final year. Of course, they could be working behind the scenes to get it done. I hope they keep him past this year.

He has one year left on his deal, he is set to make $5M this season. I think Buffalo should add three years onto his existing deal and add $39M in new money. So he would be somewhere in the 4 year $44M (or $11M/year) territory.

He would make less than he would on the open market but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Stefon Diggs bet on himself, how did that work out?

    $44M is life changing money.

I like that proposal, but would he accept?

Outside of Josh Allen, James Cook leads the Bills in TDs by a wide margin.

    James Cook 18 TDs total

    Ray Davis 6 TDs total

    Mack Hollins 5 TDs total

    Keon Coleman 4 TDs total

    Khalil Shakir 4 TDs total

    Ty Johnson 4 TDs total

    Dalton Kincaid 2 TDs total

    Amari Cooper 2 TDs total

    Tyrell Shavers 1 TD total

    Quentin Morris 1 TD total

    Curtis Samuel 1 TDs

    Dawson Knox 1 TDs

    ——-

I would also like to add a few other points that I failed to touch on in my earlier posts:

1.) If Josh Allen gets injured and misses 2-4 games, Cook can carry the team and help us win a few of those games..

2.) The NFL is moving back to running the ball. The Eagles and Ravens are two very good examples of that.

3.) If Josh Allen is struggling we can still pound the ball effectively.

4.) James Cook put up 18 TDs is highly impressive. He’s entering LaDanian Tomlinson, Priest Holmes type territory.

5.) Cook is not just a speed back he ran physically all year. He had no issue with lowering his pads getting tough yards..

Disclaimer: I am usually diametrically opposed to signing running backs as well but Cook is too good to let walk, he’s young too and this is only his second contract.

What would you consider a good offer from the Bills ?

  4. 19 hours ago, ghostwriter said:

He’s worth it. He should be a priority. He’s worth every penny. If Allen is having a bad game Cook can carry the team.

If Allen is having a bad game, the Bills lose. Cook is not carrying the Bills, lol

Just curious why this game scares the hell out of you yet you are more confident they can beat the Ravens who thrashed the Bills in regular season play?

The Broncos have very little to lose. They are playing loose. The way they handled the Chief's backups was scary. The Ravens beat us badly early on. We want revenge in this game. Plus, Lamar has been known to choke in the playoffs.

We are blessed with the Bills and the run of the McBeane administration. And yet, with the arrival of the playoffs, a particular class of Bills fan has been stirred into action...but not due to excitement. They are the naysayers who find fault, often irrationally so, with the team. It's actually a defense mechanism that, in a way, prepares such naysayers to emotionally handle the eventual playoff loss they're certain of.

I feel for these folks...we all love our Bills. The fanbase even has a name: "Bills Mafia".  But the naysayers predate Bills Mafia and need their own special classification:

DEBBIE Downers. Many are familiar with this this term, but few know that is an acronym: Drought Encrusted Buffalo Bills Idiocy Enthusiasts

These are Bills fans....so be courteous to them. Just don't get too close and get infected with their negativity. #GoBills

You're right about the defense mechanism. This game scares the hell out of me!!! If we get through this game, I feel we can beat the Ravens.

The problem is nobody can truly predict how any draft will go as so many variables and tangents. I mean it safe to assume even if the Pats had pick 1 would they necessarily trade down for a team looking to nab Sanders or Cam Ward ahead of the Titans/Browns/Giants and get a boat load of picks back? Or do they keep the pick and take Travis Hunter? Heck Hunter could fall to them at #4 depending what teams ahead of them do as could be debatable who goes at #3 if the Giants stay and the top 2 QBs go 1st and 2nd. It wouldn't put it past me the Bills didn't try to win yet would think Mayo would had found ways to ensure a loss if he cared about draft position. Hard to say if he was fired because he won or because he had a horrible season?

The fact he was fired 60 minutes after the game may suggest Kraft was upset about losing the first overall pick. It's also possible that his firing was predetermined before this game, especially with Vrabel being a hot commodity.

I want to address how this will impact the Bills and Allen moving forward, especially Monday night and in the next few games. No one on these boards knows with certainty whether Allen was concussed or if he was knocked unconscious. We can speculate and we all have our opinions on the likelihood of each, but he passed the tests (such as they are) and went back into the game.

But here’s the thing: It looked bad. Like really bad. And it got a fair bit of bad press. And we all saw how a very similar situation with Tua played out on the field and in the media. I will confidently say that the league does not want a repeat of that PR nightmare. So if Allen bounces his head off the turf again - especially with so many watching on MNF - don’t expect him to be allowed back in the game. It’ll be Trubiaky Time (shudder).

The refs will hopefully get the memo and protect the heck out of him (and old man Rodgers too), but the Jets will be going after him. It’s up to the coaches, his teammates and, most of all, Allen himself to keep him safe and sound. I, for one, will not be complaining about the Bills running the ball too much or Allen throwing it away to preserve his health.

This one game does not supersede risking our franchise quarterback's long term health. What the incident with Josh hitting his head on the turf this past Sunday tells me is that the concussion protocol is a joke.

Another thing that I've noticed lately is that the refs are allowing some hits on Josh that would be a penalty if they happened to Mahomes and other quarterbacks. Are they protecting quarterbacks or not? Is josh being held to a lower standard because he can run?

Judging from his performance in 2022 and 2023, Curtis Samuel is not a bad player at all and is indeed a moderately productive one if used properly.

In this system, though, it feels like most throws to Curtis Samuel are behind the LOS and they seem to end up with him tackled around or slightly behind the LOS. It's baffling. He has long been a fairly productive player, with 171 touches (126 catches for 10 ypr; 45 runs for 5.1 ypc) and 10 TDs in the 25 games he played for Washington in the previous two years. That's basically 7 touches for 60 yards and .4 TDs per game, and with garbage QBs throwing to him. He had a 69 percent catch rate too. For the Bills, he has 12 touches on 16 targets/carries for freaking 54 yards over five games and hasn't sniffed the EZ. He is averaging 3.4 yards per play he's involved in, and he's a WIDE RECEIVER. That shouldn't happen; it's terrible. He's not a true difference maker, but he's certainly not this bad.

At this point, I have to think he's simply being misused.

I hate to say this, but I see McDermott all over this "new" offense. Why is it so conservative? What would Andy Reid be doing with this quarterback?

    to our gunslinger?

Zero interceptions so far this season!  Yes, Brett Favre leads the NFL in interceptions over his career...he also has an SB win and 3x MVPs. Favre wouldn't be Favre playing like Trent Edwards or Tyrod Taylor!

Josh Allen 9 completions, and 30 attempts for 131 passing yards. 29 targets against the Texans. Even Dalton Kincade had 6 targets with 2 receptions.

Against the Ravens 16 of 29 for 180 yards passing a QBR of 28.4.

Give us back our gunslinger! Go back and watch what Brian Dabol's game plans looked like throwing the ball. Do you want to run to set up the pass? Well, then throw the darn ball more often. Playaction works.

Are we going to start talking about Cam Newton? I sure hope not.

To go into the season with these WR's is criminal when you have a QB like Allen. No matter how the rest of the year plays out, Beane needs to have a great offseason with FA and the draft in finding some elite level talent for Allen to work with next year.

    Good luck with that

This brings up another question. Does Beane have the authority to fire the guy who hired him? Pegula is clueless when it comes to running sports franchises, so I doubt if he could answer this question. He seems to have a man crush on McDermott, so he's good with wasting a talent like Josh Allen with this offensive challenged head coach. After 13 seconds , maybe he deserved to get fired. After Cincinnati, he had to go. Look at the team now.

You're right, he seemed to be out cold for a couple seconds. He never should have finished that game, and shame on McDermott for letting him go back in. McDermott was negligent, and should be disciplined by the league. He messed with out franchise by putting Josh back in.

We ALL knew what this season was likely going to be.

We gutted a bunch of defensive players.  We traded stallworths Diggs and Davis.  We didn't trade up for a WR or trade for a #1.

You cannot think that we will have a stacked roster year in, year out.  There HAS to be some rebuilding..  and this is it.  There is something called "the cap".

We are retooling.  Hoarding draft pics etc.

I am not surprised the talent level has dropped off.  Does it suck, sure.  But we are regrouping to enter into Allen's second window imo.

    Everyone needs to calm down.

Yeah, the first 3 games gave us false hope. What really gets me is that KC is never in this type of situation. Why not? They draft far better than the Bills do. They won last year because of the defensive side draft picks. We draft Elam. KC is where they are because of great drafting. I just wish we could compete with that.

A lot of criticism of Allen's performance on this board last night and today, some of it warranted, but I think most of it unjustified.

Do I think he played a great game?..of course not. There were a couple of throws that probably should have been picked off, and I think the underthrow to Kincaid down the seam is the one I hated most.

But according to ESPN stats last night, he was pressured on 45% of his dropbacks yesterday..completely the opposite of the 1st 3 games..many of them free blitzes. Put another way, he is forced to to get rid of the ball earlier than he may want ON NEARLY EVERY OTHER THROW. Couple that with receivers that were just not getting open and its a recipe for 9 for 31.

Even when the protection was adequate, you could see Allen go through all his progressions finding no one open, and sensing imminent pocket collapse, roll to his right hoping SOMEONE would break open, but it never happened.

So where do I put the blame? Starts with the coaching. Many of the same blitzes the Ravens used last week, and still weren't prepared.  Bad recognition at the line calling the protections?

I'm not sure what the expectation was for Allen under those conditions. Force the throw to blanketed receivers and risk more interceptions? Play hero ball and take off running more frequently? Texas did have a spy on him most of the game. Even when Allen recognized the pressure and went to his hot read, Coleman wasn't on the same page and the throw nearly bounced off his facemask.

I think a lot of this can be corrected, but I can tell you until they do, I've got a feeling what the Jets game plan is going to be next week.

Totally agree with this post. Why were they not prepared, since the Ravens were so successful with these blitz packages? I dread what the Jets D will do to this coaching staff.

Worth its own discussion since that could have changed the game.

It’s arguable this wasn’t the best throw in the world, but it’s 100% catchable. To me, there’s plenty of arc and time for Hollins to adjust under it, and instead he makes this bizarre stop and start that loses him ground.

One could argue that Josh should have understood that he was throwing to a practice squad receiver and should have just made it easy to catch , even if he might be tackled before reaching the end zone. Honestly though, Josh has never been the best deep ball passer.

There is NEVER a circumstance where you run an offense, in a tied game, with 30-some seconds left, out of your own endzone!

You make them burn their timeouts.

Let’s say we get 5 yards on 3 runs… that 59 yard kick is now a 67 yard kick.

    Why?

Without timeouts available, the Texans can’t run that last second play to get another 3-4 yards. So you have the 5 yards from the runs, AND the 3-4 yards they got on the last play.

He isn’t making it from 67.

And don’t even get me started on not challenging the Kincaid catch and instead taking TWO timeouts into the half.

Stroud gifted us a punt, when they should have been kicking a go-ahead field goal… and we return the favor by throwing 3 times out of our endzone!?!?

This needs to be mentioned and not buried in the "ESPN Player Survey" topic.

The Athletic, in its newsletter "The Pulse" polled its readers with the question:

Which QB would you rather have quarterbacking your team, Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson?

Unfortunately The Athletic is a paid subscription so I can't link it... and moreover there is not yet an article accompanying the poll, just the email newsletter "The Pulse." Finally no figures are given as to the number of respondents, only the percentages.

The results... Allen 63.8% Jackson 36.2%

From the email newsletter "The Pulse":

    "Just, wow

This was, frankly, unexpected. Pulse readers overwhelmingly would take Josh Allen over Lamar Jackson, a stunning blowout that leaves me with more questions than before. I almost wish we had included a box to explain reasoning.

    Two points to make:

Jackson and Allen are truly the ideal comparison partners. Both entered the league in 2018, are dynamic dual-threat QBs and have generally played on winning teams. Both have made it as far as the AFC title game, but the progress stops there.

Allen leads in total yards (26,314 vs. 21,145) and, per our point yesterday, has been a little more durable. He’s played in 94 games to Jackson’s 86. And yet, Jackson has two MVPs. Allen has zero.

I just don’t see how Allen is such a bigger favorite, but I digress. Las Vegas agrees with you all, too: Allen (+850) has the second-highest MVP odds this year per BetMGM, while Jackson (+2000) is down at No. 10. Woof."

    Chris Branch

On a related note, The Athletic's Mike Sando did his annual Quarterback Tiers. Again this is behind a paywall.

"The 2024 QB Tiers results are here, complete with commentary from the 50 NFL coaches and executives who were granted anonymity to share candid evaluations. The panel consisted of seven general managers, eight head coaches, 12 coordinators, 12 executives, eight assistant coaches and three involved in coaching/analytics. Each voter placed 30 veteran quarterbacks into five tiers, from best (Tier 1) to worst (Tier 5). Quarterbacks were then ranked by average vote and placed into tiers based on vote distribution, beginning with Mahomes, whose 1.00 average vote reflected his status as the only unanimous Tier 1 selection. No QBs landed in Tier 5, although some received Tier 5 votes. The survey excludes rookies because voters have not seen them play in the NFL."

Tier 1 (Quarterback can carry his team each week. The team wins because of him. He expertly handles pure-passing situations. He has no real holes in his game).

    Patrick Mahomes

    Joe Burrow

    Josh Allen

Tier 2 (Quarterback can carry his team sometimes but not as consistently. He can handle pure-passing situations in doses and/or possesses other dimensions that are special enough to elevate him above Tier 3. He has a hole or two in his game).

    Lamar Jackson

    Matthew Stafford

    Justin Herbert

    Aaron Rodgers

    CJ Stroud

    Dak Prescott

    Jared Goff

    Jalen Hurts

    Brock Purdy

    Kirk Cousins

So what does the private equity firm get out of this deal?

-GPs(general partners) typically receive 20% of the profit after the hurdle rate is reached. Carried interest is taxed at a lower rate than regular income.

-they measure their performance by how much cash they put into a deal and how much cash they get out. They prefer to use debt rather than cash, and like to put as little cash in as possible

-they are organized as private partnerships, so they don't pay corporate tax on capital gains from selling businesses.

-Dividend recaps a type of leveraged recapitalization that involves the issuing of new debt by a private company, that is later used to pay a special dividend to shareholders

Moreover, private equity firms can take out additional loans through their leveraged companies to pay dividends to themselves and their investors, and the companies are on the hook for those loans too. The share of profits private equity managers earn, carried interest, gets special tax treatment, and is taxed at a lower rate than regular income.

The controversy surrounding private equity is that whatever happens to the company acquired, private equity makes money anyway. Firms generally have a 2-20 fee structure, which means they get a 2 percent management fee from their investors and then a 20 percent performance fee on the money they make from their deals.Basically, if an investment goes well, they get 20 percent of that. But regardless of what happens, they get 2 percent of the money they’re managing altogether, which is a lot. According to data from consultancy firm McKinsey, the global private equity industry’s asset value has grown to nearly $6 trillion.
