I despise Rush but he's just an entertainer and a huge football fan. As long as he didn't name the stadium "George W Bush" Stadium, I'd be absolutely thrilled. I bet he runs a winning organization.
While rush has a lot of money he doesn't have enough to buy a controlling steak in an nfl team and isn't likely to have any control over how the team is run. He is likely to be an 10-15% minority stockholder. If he were involved with the Bills in an ownership situation I would be upset but I would still follow and like the team.
-
I agree. It is about the money with him
If it was about the money he wouldn't have a payroll that is consitantly in the middle of the pack. If it was about the money with Ralph he would have just moved the team to LA or Toronto or the countless other places he could have moved the team to. Ralph loves Buffalo and has consitantly passed up chances to move the team. Sure he makes some penny wise dollar stupid moves but to say the man doesn't care to see a winning product is just not true.

OK usually I would say Ralph would go with a no name B-list coordinator BUT the fans are really starting to hate what Ralph is doing with this team (They had to bring in TO just to survive another DJ season). Going into next season there won't be another TO like free agency grab available for the Bills and the draft can't generate that much interest if DJ or a no-name is the head coach.
So in order to keep those season ticket renewals up Ralph might go after a guy like Gruden or Schotenheimer. Both guys have been proven to be able to resurrect franchises and are big names that would insure the fans remain interested in the team. Now I know Ralph doesn't want to spend big on a head coach but drastic times call for drastic measures and hiring a proven head coach could in the long run make him money.
Russ is business savvy and knows how to market his teams and next season (Lets say we go 6-10 this year) a coach with a ring like Gruden could be the way he markets it. Gruden might cost a lot (4-5 million) but he would be cheaper than a Cower or Holmgren (6-8 million a year) and the season ticket renewals he would provide would more than compensate for his cost.
So its a much better possibility now that Ralph hires a Grunden like coach than ever.

Actually, an exploration into the evolution of the 'net & the modern web could be quite fascinating for some, though tedious for most who just want things to work when they 'turn their Internet on'.
(Certainly, it would be enlightening for the folks who still believe that Al Gore invented the Internet.
)
I'm sure there are few born after 1980 who know about DARPAnet, the 1964 Rand Corporation study that lead to the CCITT Recommendation X.25 and the evolution of packet-switching and TCP/IP, the scientists at Bolt Beranek & Newman that - in an effort to develop a 'self-healing' network that could survive a natural or military catastrophe - invented the network switches that led to today's modern routers, etc., not to mention the achievements of luminaries like Vint Cerf, Robert Metcalf, etc., etc.
Heck, now I'm thinking of writing it myself.
Self healing network that could survive a natural or man made disaster that sounds like skynet!

I use to host a few sites on Geocities back in 1999/2000 it was a good and simple interface that even me a kid at the time could use effectively. Sad day in web history but I guess every era has to come to an end.

their 4th game was a 30-10 loss against the dolphins on the road in which they had a total of 146 yards.
and THEY WON THE SUPERBOWL.
Ha. Seriously though - can you imagine the concept of this team winning the super bowl? try to wrap your brain around that for a few minutes. In 2001 Patsfans.com probably had the same mood as this place does today, but without the 400,000 bandwagon jumpers that would arrive a few months later.
(and no, i'm not expecting anything).
Spygate proved why that team had such a jump in production. Second half adjustments my ass they just got back the film. Once spygate came out it all made sense the huge improvements in play between half's a 6th round QB having a breakout year. That team was built on a lie and Goodell had the evidence destroyed for no reason but as a favor to Kraft.
Common Pats* fan defenses
Oh but every team does it. Really every team does it why was there a rule in place? Why has no other team or former coach ever admitted to doing it (Every time I ask a Pats* fan to tell me a coach that has admitted to doing the same thing they can never give an exact answer)?
Well it didn't really help them. BS if it didn't help them than why did they do it for an over 7 year period? You don't waste time and preparation resources doing something over and over again if you aren't getting anything out of it. You are telling me that all these second half surges were not really tapes being dissected but Belicheck is that good of a coach? Come on I know he is good but he stunk with the Browns who didn't have these types of runs.
Spygate has tarnished a dynasty and will forever put doubt into the legitimacy of those Super Bowls. Pats* fans will cling to the lies and talking points but the 2001 run which seemed like a Disney movie is now fully explained as nothing more than a farce and a lie.

In April Manjini alllows the Jets to trade way up in the draft to select Sanchez. So what does he get in return? A second round pick, and 3rd string qb, and couple of special teams players. Who moves that far down for so little. This however, was not enough. Now he trades away a pro bowl wr for a slot receiver and two conditional picks that will be no higher than 3rds. I know Edwards has sturggled, but at that price it is certainly worth the risk. I only wished that the bills had some former jets on the roster, who know what we could get.
What makes the Edwards trade really sad is that he could have gotten a late first plus other stuff from the Giants or Titans both of whom drafted receivers in the draft's first round. So why hold on to him only to trade him mid season for nothing really. Mangina is a horrible coach with the Browns (he won some points with me for blowing the spygate story) and is making horrible decisions with that franchise.
The trade down for Sanchez was a bad trade but not a horrible one 5 to 17 and you got a second round pick and a few players you liked from your former team OK bad move but its one you can live with. A second is nice and you liked those players but you should have gotten more. But this Edwards trade is just so bad on so many levels that it really makes you think if the Browns are doing favors for the Jets.

I think our best shot is if Brandon gets 'promoted' to team President, and is therefore in charge of hiring a GM, but otherwise does not have a definite impact on football operations. He seems to be the only guy off-field who even has a prayer of being a decent mind.
I don't know if Russ would want to bring in a guy that would potentially try and usurp his position (Assuming he gets that position). If Chris Polian where to be brought in you bet you ass he is going to want a lot of control if not full control of football operations. Chris Polian comes here he comes on his terms with full power and the ability to hire any coach he wants. If you are Chris Polian is there anyway you come to Buffalo unless you are the top guy when you could wait to take over for your dad in a better situation?
-
I would love for Chris Polian to come here. He has had a pretty high up position with the Colts for a decent amount of time and obviously has been taught by his dad so he is qualified beyond his name. I don't know if he would want to come here though. Honestly he might just want to stick around with his dad and take over for him in 3-5 years with the Colts.
However if Ralph could mend ties enough with Bill Polian and talk to Chris about being the GM (Hell give him president of football operations if thats what it takes). Chris has strong ties to Buffalo and there are only 32 jobs for GM's in the world so if he could take a job while he can he just might take it.
Its a move Ralph wouldn't make but if he swallowed his pride and made the move I think the team would be on the right track for the first time in a while. Either way this season fire DJ put in April and than go from there see what Trent and the rest of the boys have to offer and next season put in a new coaching staff and a GM that actually knows football.
So to conclude my rant I think its not likely but not out of the question for Chris to come here. He seems to be the successor to his dad BUT why wait when he could strike while the iron is hot and take a job with a team he has close ties to. A lot could happen in 3-5 years when Bill retires (Assuming that he retires anyone know how old he is?) ownership could fall out of love with him and hire someone else so don't wait for the perfect job take the job that's out there right now.

I'm a UB student and i just signed up for this seminar on 25 ways to save money buts its not for another week. What are some good ways to save money in respect to tailgating and just life in general? Thoughts?
Keep your spare change (What ever you have after breaking a dollar at the end of the day) in a jar or some place like that. Than once that jar gets full find a bank that does free change conversion (Don't use a coinstar machine they take 10 percent I think TD bank has a free one). My dad teaches me little stuff like that and it adds up 30 bucks every other month or so.
Here is two big ones (I too am a fellow college kid but my dad teaches me to be smart with my money) Carry only one large Bill around like a 50 this way it makes you avoid little purchases (If its important you will break it if its worth the hassle you just won't buy something you don;t realize but you avoid a lot of impulse buys with that) second write down everything you buy and an approximation of how much it costs. It makes you see what you are spending your money on and where you can cut back.
My dad knows how to save money and he does it better than anyone I know and he does it without being cheap (He tips well, spends money on his family and doesn't stress over every little dollar) but he is smart and avoids needlessly wasting money. He saved for 8 years to buy a house he only went to the bar once a month, never bought new cloths for himself (My mom also didn't get many new cloths), never went on a vacation, rarely took my mom out to eat (She was on board with the savings plan) and sacrificed almost everything he could just to buy his family a house and I thank him for that.
Either way your money is your work and effort good luck trying to save as much as possible.

Holmgren=lousy GM. Ask some people from Seattle.
Lousy no but very mediocre. The guy made some really good moves (Matt Hasselbeck Steve Hutchenson and Shawn Alexander were all drafted or brought in by him) but the guy did have a few wiffs in the draft and free agency. But yeah not the worlds greatest GM by any stand point.

If I owned the Bills
This season- Fire Jauron asap but April in charge interim (Realistically you have to wait until the next loss but I would have fired him after the Fins game). Let Trent finish out the season you are stuck with him. Let the next coach see what he is and give Trent some time to improve what can we loose Fitz isn't the answer. As far as the O-Line let that kid from the Packers start we need to see if these young guys can improve.
Next season- This is where it gets dicey because the way I go and draft is all Dependant on how the team does under April. Now to me if the O-line improves obviously you don't take a kid at LT or RT in either the first or second round. But if Bell and whoever at RT continues to struggle than you seriously need to think about taking a first round LT or a second round RT.
Also Trent if he can show a turnaround after these last 2 God awful performances than QB might not be a concern. So to me I can't say what positions I would or wouldn't grab in the draft because even in this hypothetical situation its just too vague.
BUT the coach I would get is Gruden or Schotenheimer but if Schotenheimer stays retired and Gruden takes another job than I go after Russ Grimm. Grimm is the opposite of DJ an offensive guy who has passion and instills that in his team.
That's my 2 cents.

Unfortunately, like most critics, you have this all wrong. Limbaugh has explained his opinion on this and it goes something along these lines:
The Steelers don't compete against the Cowboys. They compete against the Penguins, bowling, and going to the movies. The goal of any NFL team is to provide entertainment through the pursuit of winning a championship. When the Jaguars go bankrupt - the other teams do not benefit. The NFL is a single entity vying for your entertainment dollar.
I know why the NFL has a cap and revenue sharing but its still a system with socialistic concepts (Welfare in the form of revenue sharing and regulation of spending through a salary cap) which as we all know Mr.Limbaugh hates so much.
So in a vacuum the NFL is much like a European nation. But you made a good point you have to take the context that the game is in. Its competing with the MLB, NHL, NBA, Professional Wrestling and all other forms of entertainment. So the NFL does these things in order to be collectively stronger and put out a better overall product. I was just making a joke.
Football's real strength has come form not having as big a gap between the big market and small market owners in that Wellington Mara the owner of the NY Giants was very favorable to having revenue sharing and a cap even if it meant him loosing money in the short term and forking over a competitive advantage. Mara was willing to take the hit short term so that his league would be stronger and more viable and in result his teams value would go up.
I honestly think that without owners like Mara that brought the small market guys like Ralph and the big market guys like Jerry Jones (Yes I know he bought the Cowboys in 89 but I couldn't think of a big market guy from before then) the NFL wouldn't be what it is today. I also think the Giants Superbowl win was a result of some Karma from Mara (I think he passed a few years before that season) and a result of the Pats* being cheating D-Bags.

I like the idea of a Gruden or a Schotenheimer (Cower is going to be in Washington or Dallas and Holmgren is going to end up in the other place) While Shanahan is overrated and has to high a price tag for Ralph.
So that leaves Gruden and an outside shot of Schotenheimer (Assuming he wants to come out of retirement) as far as hiring a coach with experience both those guys are in the second tier of proven coaches but aren't retreads (Gruden was doing OK in Tamps plus has a ring and Schotenheimer brought San Diego back from the dead to Super Bowl contender)
To me its Gruden or Schotenheimer if you are going with a proven coach both of them have what it takes to resurrect franchises (Gruden in Oakland and Shotenheimer in San Diego and else where). Most likely Ralph is going to hire a third rate retread like Jauron or a no name coordinator (Not even a highly sought after guy like Russ Grimm).
I think if you go coordinator you have to go Russ Grimm or some other guy that other teams actually want (Like a Rex Ryan type last year). The time to hire the Mike Mularky's and Gregg Williams of the world is over. Get us a good coach Ralph and don't be afraid to open up the wallet.

In regard to the ongoing "Jim Kelly investment group buying the the team" rumors - I've always had this vision that Jim's old pal, Bill Polian, could somehow be involved, should that scenerio ever come to pass.
Wouldn't it be perfect if several of the old superbowl Bills had some ownership rights with Polian steering the ship, and in some wonderful Hollywood ending, they all got their belated superbowl rings together?!
That would be the perfect situation for the Bills yet I doubt that is going to come to fruition. I think Polian's son has a pretty important job in the Colts so maybe we should try to get him to come to Buffalo once Ralph passes. Either way Polian leaving was a big reason for the current state of the franchise.
If he had stayed I don't know if we would have a Championship but we would have had some pretty competitive teams that would have made some serious runs at titles. Does anyone know if Kelly and that group are still trying to buy the Bills?
-
Limbaugh won't be anything more than a minority partner in the Rams. The guy has a lot of money but I doubt he has the kind of cash to buy more than a 10 percent stake in the team. For him its just going to be about bragging rights to all of his friends. As another poster pointed out I would rather have Ralph than Limbaugh any day.
Also think its funny how Limbaugh a believer in the free market is trying to buy a team in a league that follows socialistic values like revenue sharing, salary cap, and restricting player mobility (Franchise Tag) unless in the next CBA he is going to try and put in some sort of free market reforms.

A great QB is terrible behind a bad OL.
A great OL makes a bad QB above average.
OL first. QB second.
It all depends on how well the line plays down the stretch. Honestly if Bell improves and the interior O-line gels and plays like they have in games past than this team's draft might be different. Also Edwards play could change this teams view of the draft lets say he plays better than once again our draft situation changes.
I honestly think if we are picking somewhere around 11 again a defensive player is the way we will go with offensive line in the second round (RT). OLB or DE/DT is the way we could go if the O-line shows to be improving with time (Did anyone honestly think after 2 good showings that there weren't going to be any growing pains?) and Edwards proves to be something serviceable (I still think they could go QB but if we are 7-9 and picking at 11 there might not be a top QB on the board).
So lets let the 2009 season play out before we start thinking what and who to draft.

Hey Tim how appealing is the Bills head coaching job around the league (Assuming Hypothetically Ralph is willing to put up money). Are top coordinators and top former coaches going to be interested in this job? I think that going into next year the talent level of this team (Pretty decent D and some parts to work with on O) is appealing enough but do highly sought after guys want to come here even if the money is right.
I am not saying this is the Raiders job but is the reason that we have seen B and C list guys like DJ, Mularky, and Greggo is partly a result of top guys just not liking the job and Ralph not spending. OR is it just Ralph if he were to put up the bucks would he be able to get a Gruden like guy. Is this job one former coaches and coordinators want but once they find out what Ralph is willing to spend they back away or is it a combo of Ralph not giving full control and other factors.
I personally think that Ralph not spending is the biggest issue. If this team ever wants to be turned around they have to get a big name or at least get a highly sought after coordinator (Like Rex Ryan was). So Tim do you think that if Ralph was willing to spend top guys would come or are there other factors in play?
-
Buffalo has a hell of a lot of talen that is being wasted. Offensively, they have GREAT playmakers, but need an upgrade on the OL. Defensively, the whole Tampa 2 scheme needs to go. the special teams are sound. What kills our team is a cheap owner and no GM.
Assuming Ralph wants to sell tickets and he fires DJ and is looking to go out and hire someone would there be Coordinators and former coaches flocking to this job? I don't know what the league thinks of our talent. I think that going into next year we have some talent on this team (The D might only be 1 player away and the O has some pieces) plus we have all of our draft choices.
OR is the reason Ralph never hires anyone of worth or notability is because not a lot of people are interested in this job anymore besides retreads and B list Coordinators (Mularky, Williams, and now DJ). Ralph spends money on his team payroll wise but I don't know how much control he is willing to give to a coach. Not that Ralph is Al Davis or anything but it seems like he is only willing to give up so much control to a coach.
I have always felt that Ralph has been penny wise and dollar stupid when it comes to getting coaches and GM's. He saves some money by getting B and C list guys but the overall product suffers and long term Ralph looses money as a result. If you bring DJ back I don't think there is a draft pick (Even a QB) or a free agent signing (They already have a hard time getting FA's) that could regenerate interest in the team so axing the coach might be the way to go.
My biggest fear is that we will replace DJ with a Mike Mularky or Gregg Williams type and it just won't matter.
-
Yep. I was trying to think of the best cheap candidate, and Grimm came to mind. At least he wouldn't tolerate his team playing like a bunch of heartless sissies. Plus, he was a great O-lineman in his day and has been a very successful assistant on two teams that have gone to Super Bowls (Pittsburgh, Arizona). Perfect low-cost guy to whip the Bills into shape.
I usually hire him in madden
. But yeah Grimm is respected around the league and won't command too much money. A lot of Steelers fans credit him with helping Cower to the Super Bowl (Some Steelers fans thought Cower was holding them back) and helping out Tomlin with his first few seasons.
I think he would be the way to go if we were going to go with a Coordinator instead of a proven coach/retread. Grimm is the opposite of Jauron he makes his team care and takes risks. Simply put he plays to win the game. Yet he is still smart. The Steelers offense plays aggressive but smart and more importantly to their strengths things the Bills haven't done in a while.
-
Jauron = Nixon
Nixon as a politician was not meant to be, he should have been a law professor, or stayed in NY and continued to practice law.
Nixon was a president who was afraid of the establishment you have to give him that
-
What do they think we will do, try to start a petition or something.
Someone at OBD is very insecure. Or compensating for something
-
OK as presently constituted how appealing is our team to new head coaching candidate? The defense isn't a bad unit and the offense has a few pieces (Good interior O-line, Evans, Lynch, Jackson). Do you think a guy like Gruden or even a highly thought of coordinator thinks this roster could be turned around fairly quickly.
Yes we need a QB (Assuming Trent continues on this path of horrible) and yes there are issues with the O-line (Although by the end of this year the line might not be as bad) and TO is likely out so WR is likely to be a big need BUT the D is a player or two from being playoff caliber and the offense as I said has some pieces.
Now Ralph isn't likely to spend big but is this a job people around the league want?
-
I'm sure the reason no one does it is for fear they'd be committed to an asylum.
It also pisses me off that when former players call him out on his abusive injury practices and no one in the media says
about it. Its not a conspiracy theory if he was caught red handed doing it.
Will you cheer for the Browns?

No never I always root for the Bills. DJ will get fired sooner or later. I want to see a win and keep the season on the respirator for as long as possible. The only time I have justified a person rooting against a team was my friend was a Knicks fan and he rooted against them so that Issiah Thomas would get fired.
