This is what's wrong with the NFL.  Paying the highest salary because they're "next" but they're not the best at their position.

The cap goes up every year.  This will always happen and its fine.  The players have a way to always be highest paid.  Sign 1 year deals and play well.  Besides Reavis they don't do that because they want the security  a long term deal provides.  Due to that, people will pass them by.

  2. Picking up cheap players who at one point in their career played at a high level is a proven way to win.  Prior the the Patriots first Super Bowl with Brady they added 19 free agents.  These included Bryan Cox, Roman Phifer, and Antoine Smith.  All three guys of those guys had good seasons for New England.  If Norman can't play then he will get cut or be one year and done in Buffalo.  I don't see any downside to this.  It should also make the draft compensation crowd happy, lol.

    Three things with this signing:

    1. This signing does not count against the compensatory formula if we position ourselves to get any next year.

    2. Despite his underwhelming years in Washington, Norman is familiar with the system and playing in said system is what led to his big payday. There will be no learning curve stepping in here and hopefully he can be as effective as he was before in Carolina. We have seen this before with Beane and McDermott, they take castoffs from other teams and they end up working out well here.

    3.  For everyone complaining about the signing, it was obvious whoever we played across from Tre was generally a weakness last year. Levi was getting roasted on a weekly basis, seemingly always on 3rd down, and Kevin Johnson wasn't that much better. If Norman can re-gain some of his Panthers' form the Secondary just got an upgrade.

In all I don't think this rules out us re-signing a guy like Johnson if the price is right in FA. I also don't think this rules out us drafting a CB in the first two days if a guy they like falls to us at a position they feel is a good value. We'll see how our FA shakes out, but I'm starting to get the feeling they will address the defensive side of the ball in FA and use their draft capital to maneuver around to get the guys they really want.

I think there is no way that we qualify for a compensation pick next year considering we have over 80 million in cap space.  If Norman plays well then leaves, we might get a pick 2 years from now.

  3. All of these hypothetical questions are difficult to answer without knowing who is available.  I would be willing to trade up from 22 for the right guy.  I would be willing to trade down to 35 if I thought the player I got there was as good as the guy I would have taken at 22.  I would use 22 then trade back into the first round for talented player who fits a need.  It all depends right.  You can set these trades up in advance.  They just have to be conditional.  If (certain player is there or my guy is not there) we have a deal.

If Beane trades up for a WR, in this class, I'll lose a lot of faith in his judgement.

A lot of the so called quality WRs will not make it.  If they believe strongly that one will be great why not trade up to acquire a great player at a position of need.  If they can stay put and get a WR of equal value to the ones take earlier then great.  Many believe that the top 3 are much better than the 2nd tier.

Brown was a Pro Bowler 9 times, 4 times All Pro, 3 times Walter Payton Man of the Year, college Hall of Famer, and incredibly generous person deeply involved in community service who spent 9 years as a Buffalo Bill. A worthy and perfect candidate for the Wall imo.

Completely agree.  Very few Bills have a resume that can match Brown's.

You don't draft a RT prospect in round 2 and convert him to guard after 1 year

RT is a hard position to play and most peak at 28-30, unless you draft Lane Johnson In the first round

Ford will be Ok, we haven't had a good RT here in a long time because we don't let them develop

Line play across the league is at an all time low, you need development unless you wanna rely on waiver wire and FA

I'd be willing to bet that Ford does play guard next year.

He’d fit the hybrid Shaq Thompson role in McD’s defense and I can see it happening.  At some point however, they’re going to have to have the organizational discipline in place to build a modern offense and add touchdown makers.  It’s gonna be tough for McBeane to stretch outside of their comfort zones and pass up on defensive talent they know how to scout and utilize in their scheme - but they’ve GOT to do it.

I’d be ok with the pick so long as they trade back up for pass catchers.  They also need offensive line help, a running back and a tight end so....

They are really good at evaluating and drafting defensive players.  Maybe it is best to lean on free agency to fill offensive needs.

    Tom Brady.

    Our own Kurt Coleman.

James Conner. Aaron Jones. Marion Mack. Juszczyk. Mike Daniels. Dak. Jonnu Smith, Enumwa,  Glowinski, Elandon Roberts, Pernell McPhee.

Not to mention you can trade 'em.

Now list the ones that were bad.  It will be a long list.

I forgot about Mike Williams, but he was another great example.  Unlike Maybin, however, he was at least rated a top prospect while Maybin was rated much lower.  I think the problem with Williams was that he was a RT in college that the Bills attempted to turn into a LT in the pros.  He simply didn't have the skill set to be an NFL LT.  He probably would have had a longer, better career if he'd been kept at RT or moved to OG early on his career.

Mike William's did play RT for the Bills.
