2003 Posted September 10, 2009 Share Posted September 10, 2009 Are the Bills poised to make a change at left tackle? The answer could depend on the health of Demetrius Bell. Langston Walker was anointed the starter during the offseason, but Bell’s rapid development has led to rumors of a split among the coaches over which player should play left tackle in the Sept. 14 opener at New England. The plan was to have both players share snaps with the starters last week at Pittsburgh before a back injury sidelined Bell. Coach Dick Jauron said a change at left tackle is unlikely but wouldn’t rule it out. The Bills chose Bell in the seventh round last year, thinking he was an intriguing developmental prospect. But he surprised the coaches by making big strides this summer. He’s a better athlete than Walker, but because Bell never has played a down in a regular-season game a change at this hour is risky. Here is what he had to say: He is a project but an extremely talented one. Bell was recruited as a basketball player and didn't play organized football until 2005. He won't go until at least Round 5. But he's 6-5, 303, and his athletic ability jumps off the videotape. Draft him, give him two years to develop, put him at left tackle and your quarterback's blind side will be safe for 10 years. All in all, the Bills offensive line is now young; almost young enough to have Michael Jackson aroused (is this too early?), with the average age of a starter at 25 years. Russ Brandon is not an idiot either. He did not cut Langston Walker to save money. Why on earth would a guy battling for his job release players for monetary reasons when his club has loads of cap room? This year may be a roller coaster ride for our offensive line, and Trent should invest in some heavier pads. But this is a talented, hard nosed line, that could be absolutely solid for years to come. Hopefully Edwards will be around for the second half... Yes, Trent Edwards, to me, is the x-factor of this season. If he stumbles out of the gate and gets hurt, then we are left wondering who we are going to have at quarterback from 2010 and beyond. The Bills now have a pretty solid foundation with a lot of young guys to build off of, but if Edwards doesn't improve or even prove he is competent in this league, this will once again set the Bills back for years.
