Definitely worth 36 million with a 12 million signing bonus.

I think it was AD who called this one a while back.

From the Mercury News (link requires sign in)

Early in training camp, the 49ers' offensive-line depth is being severely tested.

Coach Mike Nolan said Tuesday that left guard Justin Smiley has a bruised left calf, leaving him questionable for the 49ers' exhibition opener Saturday night against the Raiders at Monster Park.

Smiley, who was injured in Saturday's scrimmage, is the fourth offensive-line starter to be sidelined. Also out are center Jeremy Newberry (knee), right guard David Baas (hamstring) and left tackle Jonas Jennings (hand).

``It's on my mind because you want the group to jell that's hopefully going to be the starting group,'' Nolan said. ``But this does make way for the backups. We can see what they can do.''

Right tackle Kwame Harris could be the unit's only regular in the game that also is expected to mark the debut of quarterback Alex Smith, the NFL's No. 1 draft pick.

Scott Peters, signed initially to the 49ers' practice squad after being released by the New York Giants in their final cut a year ago, is filling in for Smiley. Center Eric Heitmann is subbing for Newberry, and rookie Patrick Estes, a converted tight end, is slated to make his first start at left tackle in place of Jennings. Estes will be playing with a cast over his broken left hand.

I especially like the fact that the converted tight end will be playing in place of Jonas and he has a BUSTED LEFT HAND. Classic.

In JJ's first or second season here, BADOL came up with the classic nickname "Jennings A La Cart".

Sounds like it still applies.

(Surprise, surprise....)

:(

Jonas's penchant for missing a quarter here, a half there, and a game every once in awhile will only intensify now that he's gotten his big signing bonus.

This is not surprising at all. We will see how this plays out over the course of the season and good luck to JJ avoiding injuiries. However if JJ produces this year in the same manner he did for the Bills, never starting all 16 games at any point in his career, those who attacked TD for not resigning JJ early or certainly for paying what the market dictated for him will owe TD an apology.

The need for apology will be muted if the Bills fail to solve their LT problems with the resources we have, but it looks increasingly doubful that the presnce of JJ being overpaid to either miss a start or go out early due to injury in 4 of 16 games last year was not the answer either if we further constrained our cap by keeping him.

No!

If Jonas fails to make it to mulitple Pro Bowls, then they will owe TD an apology. Only guys who are great at what they do deserve that kind of money because they are the best at their positions and earn certain accolades/awards.

The apology would be for faulting TD for not signing him. TD said he made a fair offer to JJ and that JJ turned him dow. Several posters wailed about this and made a variety of post which in essence said we should pay to keep JJ.

Who knows outside of these two what the offer was and whether it wa in fact reasonable, but the market rules and the market said JJ in the free market was worth a Pro Bowl expenditure.

My sense is that based on his past career and on him already being injured during his brief stint with SF JJ is not worth Pro Bowl money. If future events turn out likethe recent past (no gurantee that it will) the real men (or women) who faulted TD for not signing JJ to a Pro Bowl size offer he got in real life would certainly do the correct thing and admit that TD was right and they were wrong.

They could hide in the refuge of claiming that TD could have resigned JJ for a far less than Pro Bowl size amount he got in real life, but they would simply be showing how small they are by hiding behind this thin argument.
