can someone explain the supplemental draft?

Recommended Posts

In a nutshell, the supplemental draft is for players that didn't go in the regular draft for some reason.

Each team has the option to pick up any player in the supplemental draft but whatever round the player is picked in, they lose that draftpick in the 2006 draft.

EX. If buffalo picked that USC DT in the 3rd round, that would use buffalo's 3rd round pick in next years draft.

Miami took him in the 5th round today.

He will suck, too.

However, if the Bills took him in the 4th today, it would have been a steal.

most of the time players enter because they would have been considered academically ineligible, or ineligible for some other off the field problem...so lots of times (but not always) these are player with character issues...

So what - that describes a good chunk of the current NFL and most of the NBA. :D

well, the NBA draft basically is a supplemental draft...but when 95% of the players have off the court problems, its just easier to call it a "draft"

The order for the supplemental draft is the same as for the April draft. When a team's turn comes up, they will either draft or pass. Wright was taken in the 5th round because for four complete rounds everyone passed. Wright was still there at the second spot in the fifth round. At that point Miami figured he was worth it. Miami will not have their own fifth round pick next April because they used it in the SD.

Thats a good point because Wright was supposedly going to be academicly ineligible for next year at USC.

I remember last year there was talk that Mike Williams was going to go in the supplemental draft. he more than likely held out cos he could demand a bigger contract going first round in the college draft.

No, he would still not have been eligible to play in the NFL. You still need to be 3 yrs out from your High Schools graduation class to play in the NFL, and he was only two. That was what Clarrett tried to change, unsuccessfully

yah its essentially an auction more than a draft...basically a team is submitting the highest pick they'd spend on a player, and the highest choice wins...

Bernie Kosar was #1 in the supplemental draft (thanks to the Bills) - I'm not sure he was ever in court. He was eligible because he graduated late - after his class
