I get the allure.  The only chance Dems have of winning back any segment of men is by running these types of candidates who are very rough around the edges and appeal to the same populist viewpoint that has turned conservatism into MAGA. 
 

That is the real reason Bernie, Pod Save America, Krystal Ball etc support him.   They need him to be able to win in order to usher in leadership that appeals to men.  If Platner is run out of the Maine race or Mills defeats him, it symbolically reaffirms the idea that the Democrat Party is that of MSNBC boomers, single women and black folks. 
 

That coalition is dependent upon winning independents and latinos at a 60% clip, which hasn’t been trending that way lately.  
 

It’s not really about Platner.  It’s about what he represents for the future of the party.   Especially with growing inroads from Islamist leaders pushing socialism within the party.  It’s a lot easy to soft launch socialism when it comes from a “working class” white dude.

He's kind of a Fetterman with a more checkered past. A phony blue collar guy who runs hard left, trying to get back to the days when union laborers were both Democrats and hardass manly men.

Proves my point that a lot of the reason for the military being all squeamish about gay men is that a lot of the military rituals have homoerotic undertones. A real out gay guy ruins all the fun.
