Im a gastroenterologist. Unfortunately what likely happened here is that the Apple Juice was put into a secondary container, that had been cleaned with a caustic substance and then not rinsed out or was completely left full of the cleaning solution. I have one such patient who drank "coffee" that was pure cleaning solution and has horrible scaring/stricturing of the esophagus. Very tragic and sad case for these kids. So it is possible that children drank it, not realizing. Now your poor patient, if it was pure cleaning solution, wouldn't they have spit it out on a split second's notice of a yucky taste?
