No matter who falls on it game would have been over with not enough time left to get off another play. Punching it forward should have been a penalty which gave pats another play. Simms seems pretty confused himself Best I understand it, Polamalu's "punching of the ball" was a penalty, but the refs can't factor that in on review -- even though it was blatant.
