Proposed Rule Change

There will probably come a time where kickoffs are eliminated and the team taking possession of the ball just starts at the 25 or 30 yard line. It almost makes more sense than this constant tinkering of the kickoff rules. Changing where the ball is kicked from, how much of a running start the defenders can take, four man wedges, two man edges, no wedges, etc...

there is another adjustment to the kickoff rules:

Kick coverage players now will be limited to lining up 5 yards or fewer from the spot of the kickoff.

this will slow down the coverage guys from getting a 10+ yard head of steam built up.

I don't like this at all, they keep watering down the game every year. I dont see the 5 yards helping cut down on collisions. Like everyone isn't going to be at full speed now because of the extra 5 yards?

Watering down the game? They used to kick off from the 35 and moved it back 10-15 yrs ago to create more offense. Nobody else remembers this?

if they took field goals out of the game entirely and added a 5th down for the red zone i'd be back on board. once you attain a first down within the red zone you could have 5 downs to get a td. td or bust. and give punters the boot while we're at it. if you want to punt the ball you should have to use a normal player to punt like ochocinco/flutie/roethlisberger etc. who have shown they can punt.

keep in mind, NFL, this is entertainment. kickoff returns are entertaining as are punts from non-punters. as would be more 4th down attempts instead of lame field goals. leave kicking to soccer

I remember kickoffs from the 40.

At least that's what I think I remember.

KRC?

Damn, you're old! Of course, I could only vaguely remember this if I were ready for a rockin' chair too.

I don't like it either. It's not like Lou 'the Toe' Groza or Gerry Kramer are kicking off. Kickers today are fabulously accurate and way stonger than in the entire history of the game. Thus, kickoffs have been going back, back, back for years now. The only KO's likely to be returned now are flubs or squibs. This will likely stop teams from drafting McKelvin's & Roscoe's for their specialty and reduce the likelyhood of big comebacks in games where returns have traditionally helped turn the tide, IMO.

<edit> I do like the TD replay amendment, though

exactly. every team with superstar kickoff returners should have voted against this. i think i'll be spending more of my discretionary income on mlb, nhl etc. football is going down the drain year by year

Roger Goodell is working hard to ruin the NFL with his incessant tinkering with the rules. He takes the helm of the greatest, most perfect sport ever, and in short order he has fudged around with just about everything.

Sweet! Now nobody knows what a catch is, we play regular season games in multiple foreign countries, the personal conduct policy is applied using a dart board, defensive players have no clue how to hit legally and should probably just stop trying, and we have an overtime rule that has never been used, and when it happens, will be a total crapshoot figure-it-out-as-we-go debacle.

Thanks Rog!

Oh yeah, let's move to an 82 game schedule. Other leagues do that, and just think of all the $$$$$$$$$!
