18 week season instead of 18 game season

Recommended Posts

I was listening to the radio and they were talking about the NFL labor situation. One of the hosts said if the players and owners couldn't come to an agreement on 18 games why not make a compromise and just give each team 2 bye weeks and add a whole new week to the season.

Owners get a longer season that they can charge more for (Without having to pay the players extra seeing as its the same amount of games) and the players don't have to play in more games. You have 8 weeks where teams can get byes. Weeks 4,5,6,7 and 8 has 6 teams getting a bye. But you still have 11 games for Sunday afternoon and 1 for Sunday Night 1 for Monday.

Then weeks 11,12,13,14, and 15 start the byes again. Each week 6 teams get off 13 games still left on the plate. You also still have the first 3 weeks the last 3 weeks plus 2 weeks in between as full scheduled weeks.

Its also a good way to get less injuries. Give players more time in season to get healthy and rest head injuries. Hopefully by the time the playoffs roll around the rosters are a bit more representative of how the rosters start the season.

It made a lot of sense to me. It wouldn't interrupt the flow of the season that much and the owners would get more time to the TV deal and unlike the 18 game season you wouldn't have to pay the players more (Because you would have to compensate them for additional games played not really much compensation for an extra bye).

I like the idea. I believe they did it once in the 93 season. While it might not make more money via ticket sales I would think it should make more money thorugh TV. Whenever the Bills are on a bye I don't just take the day off from watching football. I watch the next best game and I'm thinking most other people probably do too.

Some good points being made in this post. My two cents:

1. Trading two preseason games for two regular season games is unpopular with the players because the starters would be playing a lot more snaps. In preseason games, these veterans play sparingly, so it is not an apples to apples comparison.

2. Coaches probably don't like the idea because they must make quicker decisions about who to keep and dump, as well as what plays the team can execute well.

3. Making the regular season longer doesn't really put a significant number of bucks in the owners' pockets unless there are more games played. So they will not agree to the idea. I believe owners feel they can push this concept through under the guise of responding to fan pressure to eliminate some preseason games (at full price) when there is little entertainment value in these contests. It's not going to work.

4. Sadly, I am weak, and would love to watch two more games played by each team. However, I can not support the move in good conscience because it would mean more injuries and increased numbers of players on Injured Reserved. (Heavens, we wouldn't want to have some other team break the hallowed records the Bills have set for guys on I.R. in a season.)

5. The macro picture would include shortened careers by our favorite (the best) players. It would spread the talent thinner throughout the league (like it did when they switched from 14 to 16 regular season games) and mean more boring non-meaningful games.

Dude, it is broke. While I do not agree that the extra bye should be in place for $ reasons, one cannot argue about the toll 16 games takes on a body in a 17 week span. To efficiently keep players healthier, better trained, and showcase more teams on national television the NFL can do one of two things: More byes and adapt IR rules to not permanently knock out a guy for the season for an infected hangnail, OR less games, and on different days of the week. We know which one the owners would pick.

While bye weeks are slow for the fans, it does a great service to the players as the body recharges a bit with the time off. That said, I think players should have approximately one bye for every 5 weeks of football aka 3 byes in the current set up and 4 if they wanted 18-20 games. The beauty of this is that it extends the season, and you will have more quality games as less players go on IR. If they wanted an 18 game season with adequate # byes, we would have 6 months of football :)

I got the Fix, It's simple. Let the owners eat 2 Preseason games. Keep the 16 Regular season games and 4 Preseasons. Have it be a fan appreciation thing. The Owners pay for us fans. Fans get in for free. Simple. Makes the owners look less greedy and makes the fans happy and players happy.

That's all that has to be done. I don't get what the big deal is...

If avg ticket price is $50 and the avg seating capacity is 68,000 then that would make a $6.8 million difference(2 games).

Take that to the Jerry Jones level with an avg ticket price of about $100 and 100,000 in seating and you're talking about a $17,000,000 difference.

The owners will make more money if you keep 20 overall games but change it to 18 regular season and only 2 preseason games. The 2 preseason games that are being changed to regular season games will sell more tickets and will draw bigger TV viewership which is a win win for the owners. Considering the above and the fact that fans have been bitching for years about paying regular game prices for the preseason games that amount to nothing more than an extended training camp and you can see why this is a big priority for the owners.

I know folks hate bye weeks but it makes far more sense than playing 18 games. Create a TUE/WED game of the week and have 2 teams coming out of a bye play it. Maybe add a 3rd wild card team or add a wild card play-in round.

Ive been saying for years that they should add 2 more teams to the Play offs

I like the idea. Bye weeks drive the fantasy footballers crazy but who cares? Another week of football in the dead of winter is a nice diversion. Can't wait to watch Detroit vs. Carolina. They'll be lining up for tickets to that one!

Well, I think the players are way overworked as it is. 3 hours a week times 16 games, whats that? 48 hours of game a year. So I know of people, laborers who work 60- 70 hrs a week just to put food on the table for their familys(layin block, buildin homes, whatever.) However if you add in the Football players practice time and film study a week you might get 40 hours a week, right, a third of the year anyways.

So I think instead of asking for a longer 18 game season, they should decrease the length of it slightly. The average football players age of retirement is what, 35? So we definitely shouldnt want to over work them to awful much. So if they droped it to say 13 games a year with 2 byes a year that would give the guys plenty of time to rest up for the next match up. A 15 week season with only 2 pre season games and 2 byes===perfect.

A lot of people are wondering how owners would make more money with a 18 week season instead of a 17 week one. Well the owners could charge more for TV packages by having a season that spans longer. Giving 18 weeks of programming is much more attractive than 17 as it spans longer (More weeks of programming means more commercials for the networks).

Now I did not know that they did try this before in 1993 and it wasn't deemed successful but I think that it could work again. A lot more injuries are occurring and the owners want to generate more money but the players don't want more games.

Its something worth looking into because if the sticking point is 18 vs 16 games I don't think that both sides are very willing to budge.

Don't compare NFL players to everyday people its just not an reasonable comparison. The NFL players work for a company that holds the worlds most valuable television property and the players are the ones people who tune into see.

The world of the NFL isn't comparable to the real world.

There are too many games in too many sports as it is.. Cut out at least 12 NBA games, or you could cut out the first 40 as no one cares, what a horrible display that game has evolved to. Drop hockey to about 60 games so playoffs end when winter ends. 14 games for the NFL are enough, have the super bowl on MLK weekend or presidents weekend so we can all enjoy a three day weekend. Drop baseball to about 140 games and add about 10 double headers so teams actually have to work and think about who to start/rest. Let baseball season start in mid April and end in early September. Cut the salaries of these overpaid, under educated jocks to about 10% of what they get. Cut the revenue for the ultra rich owners accordingly and drop ticket prices by 25% and beer prices to no more $3. And let us drink all that we can to make up for their loss of revenue. Cut women's professional basketball altogether why waste time money on made up sports like this. Then with all that extra time, actually make your children go outside and play football, baseball, hockey and basketball so they are not so freaking obese and have half a chance to be able to walk through walmart when they are 35 and not ride in an obese cart.
