In defense of Maybin

Maybin might be good at that, but the problem here is that he's on a team where no one seems to be able to rush the passer. Loops and stunts require a lot of timing and coordination. Right now it doesn't seem like any of the Bills' linemen are capable of doing that, so Aaron's speed is negated. So the question is....how long do you keep a guy around who is a specialist, when they have so many other needs? I think that in the right defense, he could give offenses fits. But at least with this team he can't do that.

Yep you may be right - I'd at least like to see some stunts tried - just as we see a very small amount of blitzing from a defensive team supposedly talented at DB and less talented at pass rushing

Did you read the post? my mini-defense of maybin is I never see him used with other lineman looping on stunts where he can run...

Sorry, I've read some other posts that suggested that if they would only line Maybin up further outside or standing up, then he'd be fine. I confused your post with just another one of those from the first line.

or do you think lining Maybin up 1 yard outside the OT is doing that?? I mean a loop where he loops under and finds a hole and runs up under the Center/guard where a gap may have been created

OK, so you want Maybin to run a stunt. You realize that you can't run a stunt every time, right? Now, Maybin isn't going to overpower anyone, so the DE/DT would have to occupy blockers and carry at least the G to the outside as well as pinching the LT. Let's ignore that one of our problems is that we have smaller, quicker d-lineman (Tampa-2) trying rather unsuccessfully to 2-gap in the first place for a minute. Maybin's quick first step would be negated completely as he'd have to loop back around to the inside. There, if things go well, he'd be able to come through cleanly and get his first sack. On the down side, he gets tossed on his back by the RB. The next time, he'd probably have to overpower the C or G and end up on the ground.

Scouts said Maybin was a 3-4 year project (which in itself makes it a horrible first round pick for which my remote control paid the ultimate price). So, why should we expect more than what we've seen? He's one year and six games into his career and people want to cut him. He's struggling, but why is this a surprise? He still has another two to three years to be "NFL ready." Just saying...

What exactly has he shown up to this point? Not even a glimmer of potential.

Not sure this is much of a defense as it isn't accurate. I've seen Maybin lined up (OK, yes, hand on the ground, which actually helps him with his quick first step, that's why sprinters get in a stance, btw) more than a yard outside the LT. He's quick off the ball, but then it's basically over. This is the NFL, not Coastal Carolina. NFL lineman know how to move their feet and how to work angles. As soon as they get a hand on him, he's done. He'll start wiggling around like a fish on a hook, turn his back to the play, or just get tossed on the ground. The guy is so "athletic" he's not even being asked to play special teams anymore.

There is still a chance; but, Maybin fans need to brace themselves because the overwhelming evidence is that this kid is a bust and his NFL career is all but over.

You pretty much nailed it...hard to make plays flailing around or on the ground...The Kid looks so out of his league at times it's amazing he was even considered at #11 overall...Watching Orakpo, Matthews, and Cushing literally makes me nauseous...I just can't believe people who actually get paid to Scout and evaluate Talent picked that Kid over over those 3...It boggles the mind... B-)

seems that our national scout at the time (now our rookie GM) and our director of college scouting couldn't break away from their retirement homes to properly scout and evaluate players that year(or any year for that matter)

gives you a warm fuzzy regarding Buddy's plan to build exclusively through the draft

If this were five or six years ago, the team could take the time to see if he would develop. But the idea of the "project" player is all but dead.

Y'know, I'm not sure about the project player being dead. I think we've got a couple appropriate project players.

Levi Brown would be one. Naaman Roosevelt would be another. Players who look like they may have potential

They cost us very little because they were UFA or late-round draft choices, they have small contracts, and

they're filling a useful role on the scout team while we see if they're able to "bloom".

An early draft choice though - no team can afford to use that on a project player. Not now, not for a long time.
